Zyphire stretched his arms wide above his head. The Shifter was fully enjoying the feeling of the warm sun against his skin, the gentle breeze from the nearby ocean only making him feel even more refreshed now that they had arrived at their Matori destination. Somehow, miraculously, he had managed to convince Sylvirah that it would be alright to leave Zena for a season to instead explore the oceanside. Their children were with his family and could join them later, but first Zyphire had wanted to steal some alone time with Sylvirah. Now that the village was more settled, the first few years taking so much of their time as they built both buildings and relationships with the other nearby settlements, Zyphire felt more confident about leaving for a vacation. So they had taken a pair of kinfa from his cousin’s sanctuary to fly over towards Matori, their chiavi taking a break at the sanctuary since the beach would probably be more uncomfortable for the winter birds. They had flown over mountains, past his favorite waterfalls in Sauti and across more cliffs before arriving along the beach where they would be staying.

“Is it too bright out here?” He called out teasingly to his partner who was hopefully still behind him, the Shifter glancing towards the smaller hut that he had rented along the cove. The building was simple enough with the golden-brown wooden planks gleaming in the sunlight holding it above the ocean, a porch wrapping around the five room structure with large windows and swaying curtains of sheer silk that allowed even more sunlight inside. His cousins had the other hut right down the shore where they could stay whenever they brought the children over and the children could stay in the second room next to the one for Sylvirah and himself. Zyphire was excited to sleep on cotton sheets for once instead of piles of furs and had even made certain that there was a pile of pillows to build forts with his children later when they joined them at the beach. Other than that there was a little kitchen area with a low table that had cushions for seating and a circular living space that had benches built into the walls so that you could rest against the windows and see the ocean below. Zyphire had helped a noble out once in Oba and had gotten access to the little resort that they used with guests and relatives whenever they visited Matori. It’s always good to pull favors when you can. He smirked at the thought before looking back towards Sylvirah to check on her before going to open the front door to toss their belongings into the main room.

Sylvirah would never admit to dragging her feet. If asked she never put off going past Zena and was instead far too busy getting the Ild’vann stable to think of leaving. Between the children she’d birthed, the tribe as a whole and winter seasons there just hadn’t been much room for travel. She’d seen Zyphire off plenty of times with a lump in her throat; always wondering where he went, what sort of things he saw but never really wanting to go herself. She was more than content with the wilds of the North and had been happy to keep things there.

That is, until her own children started asking questions about the outside world and that inevitably led to discussions of her leaving. Now she was flying over ridges she’d never seen in her life. Gliding over great expanses of land without so much as a drop of snow and stones so sharp they could have gutted her if the kinfa dropped too early. Thankfully the mount took direction well and after a time…well, nerves aside, she was having fun.

The act of shedding layers was an experience all it’s own. In the past the only time she’d stripped down this far had been right before spending time with Zyphire, but now she had to or she’d overheat. Thankfully most of her underlinens were loose and light, perfect to act as surrogate tops until they reached Matori and when they did she really didn’t care about how road worn she looked. The sun was warmer then she’d ever felt in her life and from up atop the kinfa all she’d seen were waves. It was like fields of snow, but with endless sea that barely ghosted the edge of an ominous beach. She’d dismounted with some nausea, though she hadn’t thought much of it and pulled a bit of roots from her pack to chew on to help.

“Do you burn out here?” Zyphire was always either far too pale or as dark as the night sky. He was going to fry and poor Yngvara didn’t stand a chance. Reaching for her satchels, the iceling started dragging her things into the hut and even started to strip down further so she could put on the cute little outfit she’d bought along the way. The last stop they made assured her it was very fashionable for Matori women so she’d picked up the skimpy little top and wrapped skirt….only to make a noticeable discovery along the way. “Don’t follow me! I have a surprise~” The outfit itself was supposed to be the surprise, but after Sylvirah had run a brush through her hair, properly tied it off and barely gotten her breasts to work with her (she could have sworn it fit) it was obvious that the little bit of a bump was the key when she went out to look for him. “What do you think?”

Zyphire was keeping his promise to not follow Sylvirah by instead glancing out over the ocean, the rolling waves making him feel relaxed despite his excitement to spend a season at the beach. The Shifter had already stripped after their last stop, his furs exchanged for Matori style clothing. An embroidered sash at his waist held his swords, sandals with some silver threading laced up his legs until they met the short cotton leggings which were covered slightly be a deep blue tunic. Of course he had that tunic opened so that most of his chest was revealed, his crystals sparkling in the sunlight as his skin shifted slightly with the moving sun. "I brought ointment to avoid that." Thankfully he was fully of shifter heritage so that his changing skin tone helped with the burning, but it still was smart to keep the lotion on hand. He had brought plenty for Sylvirah and the others whenever they joined since he had the feeling their Zenan skin would not fare as well.

Zyphire kicked a bit of sand from the porch, his gaze narrowed as he kept trying to behave until Sylvirah returned. "Hmm?" The Shifter attempted to move casually even though he was definitely excited to see how Matori clothing worked on Sylvirah, the layers of fur always hiding his wife from him, and he could not be any happier with the visual. "You look lovely! Also, are you....wait a second." His expression shifted as he noticed the little bump growing there. "Either you've had a little bit too much of my cooking lately or....oh my. Should I guess at something or will my life be forfeit if I'm wrong?"

Sylvirah had just enough of her curls pinned back with a piece of bone to keep them away from her face and off her neck. It wasn’t often that she got to have her own crystals on public display, but the whole of this outfit left very little to the imagination. For once she felt a little shy, if only because it was way too exposed for her to even think about wearing this while his family was around. This was for Zyphire’s eyes and his eyes alone.

She was still muscular, her limbs toned and scars visible in the sunlight, which made her little addition more obvious. Even as small as it was now she knew it wouldn’t be that way for long. “I don’t think we have to guess at this point,” Sylvirah gave a little snort and reached for his hand. She brought it closer, laying it above what she’d already come to know as their newest little addition. “You brought me all the way down here to trap me. Walking around with your chest exposed like that…It’s criminal.”

Zyphire smirked at the little snort, his fingers resting lightly against Sylvirah's stomach to feel the bump. "That's fair." He replied with a chuckle. The Shifter allowed his fingers to linger against Sylvirah's skin, the warmth familiar and strange at the same time considering that they weren't relying on furs and fires for that now. An amused expression crossed his features as he looked up from the bump and towards Sylvirah, his smirk only growing at her accusation. "Is it? Maybe we should just lock each other up until the rest arrive and we can wear more coverage then."

"If anything it's criminal to make me think of how much I would rather stay in a bedroom while on vacation. Then again I don't always have to appreciate you in a bedroom, especially when there's so much of this isolated cove with no one nearby." Zyphire teased as his fingers slowly worked their way up Sylvirah's stomach and traced around every visible crystal that he rarely got to see in such good lighting. "Now we definitely have to enjoy the time down here together before our lives get busier again."

“And end up with twins like Iriyana? Not a chance.” She rolled her eyes with a barely veiled smirk. As happy as she was that her brother could finally have a family of his own she had absolutely no desire to carry multiples. Sylvirah knew as much about child rearing and conception as the old wives tales she’d grown up on so she was happy enough just exploring the area instead of her lover.

At least, for a while.

“Why don’t you show me the cove first and then we can decide if you can hold on?” Sylvirah ‘hmm’ed. She placed her hand over his once more, following along under his appreciative guide of her form before lifting it up to hold. “This changes nothing. I don’t plan on spending this entire trip doing the same things we could back North.” As fun as that might have been she really did want to see the area, more so now that she knew she might not be able to in a few months time. “I want to get in as much sailing and fishing as I can before I’m too big to walk straight.”

"I'm surprised we've avoided that, honestly." Replied Zyphire with a chuckle. As much as he enjoyed teasing Ergon about things the man was genuinely surprised that it was Sylvirah's brother who had twins and not them. His own family was full of twins with his cousins having twin children while being twins themselves. He would playfully blame the iceling half for that then and think that his shifter blood prevented such things from happening in his own direct family.

Zyphire let out a disappointed groan, mostly teasing, and laced his fingers with Sylvirah's so that he could swing her hand by his side. "Fine, fine. However, I would like to point out that there are certain things we cannot do back north for fear of freezing to death. This place definitely opens up all the opportunities. We have a whole season to fish and sail with everything else in between." A grin crossed his lips as he gently tugged Sylvirah after him, going down the few steps from the porch and back to the damp sand since their vacation home was actually on a platform right against the ocean. The actual cove surrounded them and Zyphire decided to tug Sylvirah closer to the water, the sand cool and damp here instead of hot where the sunlight was hitting it.

"First we have to get you initiated. We stand here so that you can greet the ocean and then we can explore the beach." He instructed with a grin as the water started towards them, the waves preparing to push the ocean waters up to their calves.

“Mmm.” She conceded his point with a raise of her brows and a nod. If they wanted to get up to any mischief outside they had better do it before the children came, or if there were enough coves they could sneak away for a bit…

Each step out onto the sand was an oddity to her. “It feels like snow, but…firmer?” She pressed her heel into the sand, then lifted it to look at the indention. Of course she’d stuck her bare toes in muck and snow before to look at the prints, but never for this long. She would have lost her limbs that way. This though…even in the cooler areas where the water caused globs of sand to suck up around her feet it was still far warmer than she’d known.

She held onto his hand for support and relied on his eyes for guidance as she took in everything except where her own legs were going. When the first wave hit her calves Sylvirah let out a surprised squeal, unintentionally jumping back into Zyphire with a laugh. “It’s…fuzzy! Foamy?” She didn’t know the word, and struggled with it, but let it pass. “There are so many waves! Is it always like this?”

She’d been on ships and boats before, but the frigid lakes were nothing like this.

Zyphire nodded with a warm smile. It was almost like watching one of his children walking for the first time all over again. "It's very similar except that in the sunlight the sand gets extremely hot whereas snow is bitter cold. The ocean keeps it wet around this area so that it doesn't burn your feet." And then the wave hit and Sylvirah was up against him which prompted Zyphire to wrap his free arm around her waist for support. Sylvirah's laughter even after all of these years together still brought a laugh to Zyphire's own lips. He enjoyed hearing it so much! It was so beautiful and worth it the very first time he had heard it, a miracle considering he originally never thought she would even smile let alone laugh.

"Maybe a bit...foazzy?" He replied with a grin. "The ocean never stops moving so the tides will pull it back and forth from the beach. It gets better at night with the higher waves...those will be pretty under the moonlight." Zyphire held onto Sylvirah as another wave splashed up against them, soaking their upper legs this time. It felt refreshing compared to the heat that they had encountered upon arriving in the area. "Still, we should be careful not to go out too far especially once the children are here." His expression shifted as he studied the sparkling waters. "As fun as this is, the ocean can very easily carry someone away."

"But that aside it's not too bad to splash around a bit." Zyphire let go of Sylvirah so that he could bend down and scoop up the water in his hands. "If you're fast enough too the tide will drag in shells and other things from the deeper ocean." As another wave splashed forward Zyphire quickly moved down so that he could snag a shell with blue and white speckles, the edge smoothed down over time but surprisingly mostly intact minus a little curve from the top. The Shifter grinned as he held it up towards Sylvirah, not even minding that the wave had completely soaked his tunic since he had been crouched.

The spray that the waves left behind popped against her legs before fizzing out. Just the concept of seeing a wave do this on its own without strong winds or someone making them had Sylvirah’s wide, golden eyes looking at every aspect. “We’ll have to come out and see it then.” She rarely missed a chance to see Zyphire under the moonlight anyway, but now that she knew this she had to experience it. Even after all these years the chances he underwent were something of a marvel to her, and as much as she’d waited to see Yngvara do the same she never did. The girl’s skin was always dark, even her eyes, but at the very least little Ziya’s eye changed. “Do you think the new little one will change like you? Under the moon?”

She held onto him a little tighter on instinct when the larger wave came on them, but it was just a reflex. As soon as it was there she was bending to dip her arm into the water, pulling away from Zyphire entirely to chase after the wave when he let go of his hold. The iceling was just content to watch the sand filter through her fingers, but when he presented her with a shell Sylvirah’s smile brightened. “Det er utrolig! It’s gorgeous, Zyphire.” When she reached for the shell another water came upon them and slammed into Sylvirah’s side. Since she’d already been crouched it covered her completely, bringing the woman down to her butt in the sand with a mess of curls and kelp consuming her face.

Zyphire blinked at the question. "Perhaps. I know it's not as common to see in mixed blood, but there have been hybrids who can change." He nodded after a thoughtful moment. "We just haven't seen it yet in my family since Kian and Talisia don't change." Their children didn't change either but he had the feeling it was because the shifter blood had been so diluted by that generation. If they had perhaps mated with a shifter then things could be different, but Zyphire had never seen anyone less than half-shifter who changed like him. Plus little Ziya's eye did shift even if it was the most subtle of changes unlike Zyphire's whole skin coloring.

"Just as you are." Teased Zyphire before finding himself laughing at the sight of Sylvirah. Of course the Shifter was worried and had jumped to her aid, but there was just something so comical about his companion's appearance by the ocean that just delighted him too much. "I think you're supposed to grab the shell and not the kelp. I'm not too fond of eating it myself." He teased as he bent down to help her back up before a wave came crashing into him as well, tumbling the pair back down onto the wet sand. Zyphire shook his wet mane of hair, pieces of kelp also sticking to his body now, and let out a chuckle. "We should uh...get up before the next one has another chance to mess us up." He joked lightly as he moved once more to help Sylvirah out, his hand clutching around another shell as he tried to navigate away from the rising tide.

She tried her best to at least brush some of her hair, and it’s ‘additions’, off her face before Zyphire tumbled into her. “Omph!” There was no way to avoid getting a mouthful of saltwater, and by the time she was sitting up a second time Sylvirah was practically gagging. “Hellig dritt, that’s awful. It’s burning into my skull.” Her lips curled back as she tried to cough up the taste, but with little success. This time, instead of waiting for a wave to catch her off guard, Sylvirah reached for Zyphire’s hand and pulled herself up.

They were an absolute mess. Between what she knew she must have looked like and what he looked like Sylvirah knew it was bad. Sand clung to Zyphire’s tunic, every last stitch was soaked and clinging to him….Maybe she would have preferred it this way if her nose wasn’t dripping salt water. Pausing to look back over the ocean, Sylvirah gave her nose a sniff and exhaled before following him up. “I’m glad we came when we did. If I’d waited until next season I might not have been able to.” Her mind went to the little one she carried and the challenges they would bring. While not unwelcome in the least, there was much they would need to do to prepare. “And I hadn’t come then you might not have made it back before they arrived.”

"Yeah, it's not the best." Zyphire spit saltwater out of his own mouth, the Shifter running a hand along his cheek to try to sling away any of the remaining droplets. "I'm glad as well." He managed as they finally got away from the trap, the seashell getting tucked into his sash. "Though I'm also happy to hear why we will be staying in place for the next year or so." He added with a small smile. Would they be blessed with a daughter or son this time? Either way Zyphire was happy to grow their family and just hoped the village could take more of their children running about.

His expression shifted with guilt at the comment. He hated leaving with the seasons, but work and his own discomfort with the bitter winters often chased him away from home. "If a note had made it then I would have traveled through the snows to you." Zyphire assured Sylvirah, his expression sincere as he reached up to take her hand again. Zyphire squeezed her fingers before glancing around. "There's a natural spring nearby. We can wash off all of the sand there if you'd like."

Sylvirah’s expression softened. “I know.” She looked down at their intertwined fingers and gave them a squeeze. “I’ve always known, and I wouldn’t change anything. I’m happy with the way things are. We have each other when we can afford it, and I know you’re safe when you’re gone.” They both knew that the chances of Sylvirah traveling more often now that she’d done it was slim. It was a nice change of pace, something she might pick up a few more times over her lifetime, but her place was in the North. His was across Tendaji and she respected him for it. As for where their children would go only fate could decide.

She leaned over to lay her sopping, kelp encrusted head on his shoulder as they walked. “Besides, if we were around each other too much I might kill you.” Her tone was deadly serious, but the look she gave him when she brought her eyes up was entirely playful. “Just don’t tell me about any secret lovers you keep and we’ll be fine.”

"Mmm." Zyphire closed his eyes against the subtle twist of his heart that Sylvirah's expression and words gave him. It made it honestly hard to not linger in the north whenever he had to leave for the season. Not that he left every year since there were months that he endured to stay with his family but since the children were getting older the Shifter had started roaming more again in the last few years. Now though he wondered if his pacing would change once more as he didn't want to leave Sylvirah alone with a little one. Maybe the vacation was a blessing since they both understood that Sylvirah would rarely leave the north like this, if ever again, and now maybe their stay could last a bit longer until the baby arrived. So he was determined to make as many beach memories as he could with his family, the rare sight something he would forever treasure in his heart. Not that Zyphire despised the north, rather he loved it just as much despite the bitter winds but he treasured traveling and wanted to share the experience with his loved ones.

Not minding their messy state, Zyphire simply rested his head back against Sylvirah's for a moment before focusing again on leading the way past their vacation home and towards the cliffside where the crystal waters flowed down into a spring. "Fair enough." Zyphire managed with a laugh. "Though I don't think I could take a secret lover even if I wanted. There's nothing as thrilling as having my life on the line like when I'm with you. Who could compare?" He joked before gesturing forward as the waters came into view. "No one should be around so this is a free place until the rest arrive. Then we may have to consider wearing towels at least." For today though? Anything was free game and Zyphire was happy enough to ignore the little shed built next to the large pool of water.
