Brooklyn had knocked on Elliot’s door, hesitating slightly after been invited over. She had wanted to talk to the two boys, obviously…but this seemed like such a drastic step, actually going to Elliot’s house...though at the same time, she was excited. They were her friends. And the friendship was one of the best treasures she had ever had…and hopefully…

Hopefully if she could find a way to become magical...she could repay that friendship with protection, keeping both boys safe, as well as Elliot’s family safe…

She wouldn't be alone in it, she could hang out with Cara more, and they could keep one another safe and…it just seemed like the best option. Obviously the Negaverse had seen something in her or…or something, so why shouldn’t the other side see something in her. She could be the hero she had always wished to have…she could change things…or…change things more than she had ever thought she could, especially at fourteen.

Brooklyn’s heart was pounding uncomfortably, and she wasn’t sure if it was due to the stress of going to a new house, of possibly meeting Elliot’s parents…or if it was due to the fact that she was going to tell her two best friends that she wanted to find a way to become magical…even after they seemed to not want her to get involved at all.

But.

She had more information now, and she wanted to figure out how this could happen.

Elliot leapt up from the couch as soon as he heard her knock. He left Atticus there with the snacks they’d made–crackers and cheese and crab cake dip that Asher had been enthusiastic to teach them how to make after he’d discovered it a little while ago. Elliot wasn’t going to complain; he liked it, even if it was the third time they’d had it this month. There were vegetables and dip, too, but he’d already gotten into the dip.

He didn’t think Brooklyn would mind, there was plenty, still.

The house smelled like a bakery; Oliver insisted that something sweet and fresh baked was the best way to welcome someone into your home.

“Brooklyn,” he greeted, stepping aside to invite her in. “Come on, hello. We have snacks. And movies. My dads are in the kitchen, here’s Atticus. Can I get you something to drink? We’ve got soda, and other things. And if you’re feeling cramped or crowded, I already told my parents that we were going to take a walk later, so we can sneak out whenever we need to.”

Atticus was happy to see Brooklyn again. Elliot seemed to like her a lot too, so when he jumped up from the couch, Atticus made sure to stay put and not crowd her at the door. He did lift up his hand to wave to her, though.

He couldn’t help but feel a little anxious, though. Especially knowing that the Negaverse had been following Brooklyn around, wanting her to join them. He was afraid that they might still be following her. Even if she thought she was the one meeting them, there was no guarantee they wouldn’t have snuck around behind her to see if she went to talk to anyone else.

If they followed her to Elliot’s house, and therefore Atticus’ house, well… Atticus was really happy with his new life over the past few months. Even if it had been scary at first, knowing that there were such good people willing to help him was comforting. He just hoped Brooklyn would stay safe and that no one would have to get their lives uprooted again.

The house smelled like what Brooklyn had always imagined the houses in commercials would smell like. Warm and inviting like a real home.

She broke into a smile when she saw Elliot, and waved to Atticus, feeling pleased to see him too. “So, I have stuff to tell you, more…crazy stuff, honestly. Kind of bad, if you look at it one way, but I’m pretty sure that I saw a monster, and I think it was taking my energy…but the cool part that isn’t bad is that my friend…well, kind of my friend. Mentor? I don’t know. She was also a foster kid but. Now she’s an adult so she’s just…living life to the best of her ability, anyway, she’s one of the magical people, and now I really want to be one too, but…she said really the only way was for me to get into danger and…honestly neither of us liked the sound of that, so…I’m hoping that there are other ways. I want to protect you guys. And everyone and…”

She looked somewhat sheepish and shrugged. “And I kind of had this whole big daydream of being this hero to other foster kids and…you don’t know just how badly I want that…” Brooklyn moved to flop onto the couch next to Atticus, giving him a quick hug and then drew away, looking between her two best friends. “...So, do you think you’d be able to help me find a way to become magical to help protect you and…like. Everyone?”

Her gusto had somewhat faded by the end of her excited ranting, and she managed to stop herself from doing a set of jazz hands, but only just managed to. “...This house smells like a home too, Elliot, I‘ve said a lot of dumb things already but…I wanted you to know that.”

Brooklyn spoke so quickly that Elliot didn’t even think to maybe urge her to keep quiet. His parents were in the other room so he wasn’t worried about them overhearing, but his heart was still pounding at the idea of them thinking he was keeping secrets from them, or thinking Brooklyn was caught up in all of this, too.

Well, she was! In a way. Just, not the same way they were.

He moved to sit next to Atticus as she spoke, and he stared at her for a few seconds before he turned to the table “Well, um. We have crab dip, so if you want to try that, it’s really good. My parents are going to want to meet you, I wanted to introduce you, but we can do that in a minute. My dad made some cookies, they should be ready in a little bit. And he’s made enough that you’ll be able to take some home, too.”

It wasn’t the most important part of the conversation, he knew that, but even with him being a quick thinker, he still needed to give himself a few seconds for his brain to catch up.

When it did, he just leaned forward a bit, shoulder brushing Atticus’ as he tried to stay close enough to Brooklyn that they could talk quietly.

“Are you safe, Brooklyn? I’m really worried about people dragging you into all of this, how did you meet?” Was her mentor part of the Negaverse, too?

“I don’t know if there’s a way to like, pursue being magical. I feel like it’s something you can’t just decide you want, otherwise everyone would have some sort of magic. I mean, the best I can think is taking some karate classes, or self defense, or whatever–that way you can protect yourself if a monster, or some evil magical person finds you. And you can use it whether you’re magical or not, you know? Did your mentor say there’s some way to just get magical power?”

He was curious; Michael and Devyn hadn’t said anything, but Soleiyu was always making magical little things, so he didn’t know what was possible.

…Or if the Negaverse could find a way to take advantage of that and give them something new to worry about.

Kind of bad stuff that Brooklyn had to talk about had Atticus’ smile fading a bit, his brows furrowing with concern, even as she hugged him and he hugged her back. Seeing a monster was bad enough, but he had no idea what she meant by magical people.

Well, he did. But there were so many kinds, and he knew the Negaverse had been trying to recruit Brooklyn before.

As Elliot sat down next to him, he reached for his hands to squeeze. He could already feel the dread filling him, because what if Brooklyn was getting caught up in something that was more than they could handle.

“Please don’t put yourself in danger,” he said, his voice breathless. He could clearly see she was excited, but he was so worried for her.

“You don’t need to protect us, Brooklyn. If you protecting us means you might be hurt… we don’t want that.” He felt a little guilty for speaking for Elliot, but he was confident that his boyfriend felt the same way he did.

“Besides, Elliot is the best player on his baseball team, and he runs all the time, so he’s really strong,” Atticus insisted, glancing up at Elliot with a small, hopefully reassuring smile. He knew Brooklyn didn’t mean anything by it, but it was a little silly to think that Elliot needed Brooklyn, or even Atticus, to protect him. Despite Atticus wanting to.

“My dad told me once that there’s more to protecting people than just fighting. That sometimes you can do more good just being there with someone when they need support,” he shared, and even though he was still worried for Brooklyn, there was obvious pride and fondness in his voice.

“So… even without magic, there’s a lot that people can do. We like you for being you, Brooklyn. You don’t need to change that. But Elliot’s ideas are really good.” They always were, in Atticus’ opinion.

“How did I meet Cara? Um. Well she was working at a store in the mall and I was stealing some earrings and she caught me…and then bought them for me as well as a stuffed panda…she had gone to St. Mags too and, I guess she could just. See herself in me or something…she said that when she’s magical she’s…uh. Shoot.”

Some old movie name. Honestly, it hadn’t stuck so well in Brooklyn’s mind but she gave a sheepish smile. “Something…black and white movie...page of Cosmos? Or something? Look, it was a lot of information in a really short time so I’ll make sure to get the real name the next time I see her, but…I think it’s the name of a movie, I think.”

She was mostly sure about that, but still, Brooklyn frowned slightly. “...I mean, I’d love to take classes like that or something, and maybe one day I will when I can afford it…but it’s not really an option right now, the best I’ve got is gym class…” She didn’t have fathers who gave her good advice and made crab dip and cookies. She had herself, and now that winter was settling in, maybe she’d be able to earn a little money shoveling snow like she had raking leaves but…that wasn’t guaranteed. And she would have to go back to her horrible foster home for the winter break and…

“I’m not good with being there for people, Atticus…I’m not sure that I really know how. But I’m good at fighting. I’ve had to be. You have to be good at defending yourself if you want to survive alone…and if I’m just being here for you guys if something happens? If the Negaverse decides to be a jerk again? What good is that? ‘Being there’ won’t help you. If I can be magical, then I can.”

A Page? A Page wasn’t strong at all! Elliot was only a Squire and he knew he paled phenomenally when compared to Michael. Well–a Page was stronger than someone without any magic, but still…that wasn’t strong enough to protect Brooklyn from the Negaverse.

“Brooklyn,” Elliot chastised gently. Food was a necessity. Earrings, not so much. “You know Atticus can make earrings, if there’s something you want, you should ask if he can make them.” He didn’t want to make her feel bad! It was just dangerous! He didn’t want her to get in trouble.

“And we appreciate you wanting to protect us,” he insisted, “But I don’t–Brooklyn, they were in my house,” he said softly. “They brought a monster, and I think it would have killed us if we didn’t get out when we did. I know you want to help. I like that you’re brave and care so much about us and helping people. But I don’t know if being magical is a good thing. They’ve got swords, and monsters. And they don’t care what you have, or if you’re armed or not, it’s not going to stop them. If you’re magical, you’re just going to have a target on your back. And, if you can’t do a self-defense class, we can talk to our dads about it. Or we can ask Atticus’ parents to teach us, they’re both really strong. And–”

He pursed his lips and looked a little apologetic. “I know you’re in a really bad place. And I’ve been lucky, my parents have always been there for me. But they’ve been in bad places. And Atticus’ parents have, too. And I know they’d have better advice than I do, but I don’t want you to get hurt or get in trouble. Let’s make a plan, together. If you want to help protect us, the first thing you have to do is protect yourself, because it would hurt me, a lot, if anything happened to you. And I think–I think you’ve been looking out for yourself for so long that it’s hard to trust other people, or to ask for help. But you trust us,” he pointed out, because she was telling them about all this magical stuff!

“And even if you’re not good at being there for people, you’re trying, right? You want to be here for us, and for people who need help. And, that’s what we need. For you to be here. If you get hurt and wind up in the hospital, or worse? I don’t want to lose you, Brooklyn. So promise me that you’ll be careful. And that you’ll work out a plan with me and Atticus so we can all look after each other and figure out how to handle this magical stuff, okay? You’re not alone. I know you have been before, but you aren’t now. We care about you. We want you to be okay. And we want to protect you too.”

Atticus could feel the color draining from his face, but was glad he was already relatively pale, so it wasn’t so obvious. His stomach felt like it was in knots, his heart raced. If she was stealing things, she could end up arrested and then sent to juvenile detention. Maybe Brooklyn could survive a place like that, but Atticus knew he would never. Maybe that was why the thought of doing something bad made him so unsettled.

He nodded in agreement with Elliot, looking at Brooklyn with worry. They could protect her, too. It didn’t have to be a one-way thing.

“It’s not fair for you to want to protect us, but not want us to protect you,” he said quietly, leaning a bit heavily against Elliot because he didn’t want to think about the years he’d been forced to survive on his own.

Except he couldn’t fight. He wasn’t able to defend himself either. If he did, his life would have only been made worse. Or shorter. And he didn’t steal, which meant using other methods to obtain food. It was a miserable existence, but he survived. Long enough to make it to that point. So Brooklyn just needed to keep holding on.

She couldn’t beat the Negaverse on her own. She would only get herself killed.

“I know that now, but when I met Cara I didn’t know Atticus existed, it was before school even started so..you can’t really fault me for not getting earrings from my friend who I wasn’t friends with…I’m good, Elliot but I’m not a time traveler.”

…If she had been, oh things would have been quite different. Still, she listened to what they both had to say and seemed to deflate as she did so. “Normally when people say that they want the best for me, it’s really just a code for ‘we’re getting paid to say this and we really don’t give a damn’, but I know that you two mean it…and I’m not used to people honestly wanting to protect me, but I’m trying. That’s why I’m telling you all of this.”

They still didn’t think she was crazy, which was a good thing, but the lack of confidence in her becoming some wonderful magical being and keeping them safe was…

Well. It wasn’t unexpected but…it hadn’t been what she had wanted to hear.

Finally, she looked back towards Elliot, and then glanced to Atticus. “I’d love self defense classes, and if you can help get me into something, I’d appreciate it…but if I do meet some kind of good fairy out on the road and she offers to give me magical powers…I’m not going to say no.” Unless it was actually someone from the Negaverse in disguise, that would be a different story but…

Brooklyn thought that she knew almost enough to keep herself safe from that trap.

“That’s fair. If it’s a good fairy, and not a bad one in disguise. Just be careful. Power isn’t everything, and–well, you know? You’re technically not supposed to be making deals with fairies anyway, let me get–my dad knows all the fairy lore, he’s got wards up in the garden just in case. He’s not crazy either. But better safe than sorry. But I don’t want you to get stuck in some weird magic for power contract and then have to pay an unfair price.”

His arm was wrapped around Atticus’ waist and he squeezed him, and then stretched his hand out to take Brooklyn’s so he could squeeze it. His eyes didn’t leave hers, and he hoped she understood that he was taking her seriously, and that he really did care. There wasn’t any code, there wasn’t any underhanded meaning behind it. Just Elliot, worried about his friend.

He knew that desperation could make people do intense things, and he didn’t want her to have to.

“Stick with us for long enough and those other people won’t matter. I’m sorry they hurt you, and weren’t fair to you. That’s not fair. But you’re our friend and we’ll do whatever we can. So self defense classes, we’ll get right on that. That way, even if you don’t run into a benevolent wish-granter, you’ll still be able to get stronger. And we can try to do some discrete research to see if there’s some way to protect normal people against the Negaverse without getting on their hit-list. How does that sound?”

When Elliot reached out to take hold of Brooklyn’s hand, Atticus reached out to place his over both of their’s to squeeze as well. He was worried. He was scared. Scared for her. Scared for the people he cared about. The Negaverse wasn’t something to take lightly.

While something magical happened for him and Elliot, he knew it wasn’t fair to expect the Moon to start handing out magical Wonders to everyone, otherwise Atticus would have begged for it to make Oliver and Asher magical knights as well. If only so they could see how beautiful everything was up on the Moon. But Devyn had explained that it wasn’t the same as it was in the past. There wasn’t a school for Knights like there’d been before. And Senshi were brought into their powers in a different way. Maybe Soleiyu would have a better idea about all of this.

He also felt a little guilty going to Michael and asking that he pay for things for their friends, even though he knew he would. He didn’t want his dad thinking that they were going to start taking advantage of their generosity…

Atticus would just have to figure out how much of his allowance he’d saved up. Hopefully that would be enough to get Brooklyn into a class. It couldn’t be too much, right?

“We just want you to be safe,” he insisted, giving her hand another squeeze. “But everything Elliot is saying is true. You’re our friend and it’s not fair that you’ve gone through everything you have. We’ll do whatever it takes to help okay?”

Brooklyn couldn’t stop the small, amused smile that twitched onto her face as Elliot mentioned that his dad believed in fairies and…that was kind of cute. “Yeah okay, I want to be safe too, don’t get me wrong…and I appreciate you guys a lot. Thank you. I’m really glad that we got to meet and become friends…and even if I’m still scared out of my mind to meet your dads…both of your dads, I…I’m excited to, I guess. I’m not going to unstick myself to you guys, Elliot you pretty much sealed that when you bought me the pizza…and Atticus when I met him…but…”

She sighed and shrugged. “We can do this together, if it would make you both happier and feel better…”

It didn’t mean she would stop trying to find a way to become magical…but she would make sure that she wasn’t going out of her way to make trouble to see if magic found her…totally different things. Kind of.
“...What kind of cookies are they making, Elliot? It really does smell good.”
