The journey through Tale into Jauhar was going to be a long one. A part of him already deeply missed the barren craigs of home, but there was a certain beauty to the rolling grasslands. He’d never seen colors like it before and the prey they’d been able to catch made acquiring gold all the easier. That being said Hargitt had a plethora of traps spaced all around the wilds and today was his time to collect.

The burly hunter quietly made his way around. Some traps were simple rope hoops, meant on snaring smaller beats and others were pit traps he’d made using natural holes in the area. If the prey was mangled he usually left it for scavengers, but anything of worth was field gutted and honestly he hoped at least the furs would be usable.

Someone had set up a hunting operation in the grasslands beyond her papa's forest. Not that that didn't happen, ever, but usually when someone came through they would hunt a bit, set up a camp, and then be gone within the next few days. That wasn't the case here though, nope! There were traps - all over the place, and Eujanie would have been impressed if she wasn't so annoyed. These days, she went off into the wilds on her own more often than she used to, and all it would take was getting stuck in one trap - falling into a pit or something - and then she just knew her mom would stamp her foot and say she couldn't anymore.

... Eujanie was getting older, sure, but she liked living here with her parents, and if her mama said something, her papa would make sure it happened, adult or not. So.

Traps.

You know, she could always try to break 'em. Maybe then the hunters would think the place wasn't worth the hassel and would leave. But they'd probably figure out it was a person breaking them, and really if they hadn't found her parents' homestead yet, Eujanie didn't wanna give them much reason to go poking around.

Which brought her to the here and now - hands on her hips as she peered down at a pit trap, at the bottom of which there was a scrofa - squealing up a storm. She had a knife in one hand, but honestly she didn't fancy going down into the hole, where it might get desperate and try to hit her with its tusks, but all that noise was bound to get attention - like maybe a witu or something?

Uggggh.

Hargitt suspected he may run into a local at some point, but it never stopped him from working. As far as he was concerned the lands he walked belonged to no one and as long as he didn’t disturb them too much then it wasn’t any worse than what they would have done. He always carried his weaponry on him; both for his protection from wild game and said locals. Some had grown used to their windling neighbors, some hadn’t, and he wasn’t about to mess with the latter.

With a satchel full of aldabuk meat slapping against his back, the huntsman moved on to some of his pit traps. He could hear the squealing from yards away, but what he saw wasn’t what he wanted. A leafling, a young one, looking down into the hole. Hargitt crouched, pressing his body down into the tall grass so he could observe without being seen. He had a habit of making local kids frightened of him which caused a stink with their parents and he really didn’t have the energy for that so he was keen to just see what she did next.

If it was Uzumati, maybe he'd have been aware enough to realize someone was watching him. But Eujanie was young, and definitely not self aware, so she continued to peer down into the hole, tapping the flat edge of her knife against her leg. "Look, I'm sorry, but it's a lot more trouble to try and get you out of there alive." She called down to the scrota, wrinkling her nose. "You're just too big."

A petty part of her wanted to just go down and steal the kill to be a brat, but honestly - she knew she needed to stop the thing's squealing, and killing it and leaving felt like a waste.

So she either left it to scream, and risk attracting attention, or- she risked getting gored. "Maybe I could tie my knife to a stick and stab you. Spear like. No chance you'd just tilt your head up so I can get your throat, huh?"

For Chi’s sake. Was the girl an animal supporter? It would have been hard enough to justify pushing her into the hole to secure his kill, but if she cried about it then Hargitt would feel responsible. Logically he should just walk away; there were other traps, other kills and far less conversation than what was about to happen.

And yet…he really did like fire roasted scrota.

“You’re just as likely to fall in as you are to hit it.” Hargitt started to walk towards the pit and slowly took his longbow off his back. The burly windling knocked an arrow, but didn’t raise it until he was close enough not to immediately threaten her. Once he had the squealing beast in sight he lined up his shot and took it in a matter of seconds. Almost as quickly the animal quieted.

The girl was so invested in her prey that she jumped and spun around, knife raised, when someone spoke. Of all the things she expected to see though - a surprisingly fit older, foreign looking guy wasn't it. And why would she ever expect a foreigner?! She eyed him, lips pursed, eyes flicking to the bow as he pulled it off his shoulder, but he made no sign he was about to shoot her, and instead just came closer.

And killed the scrota. She peered down into the hole, then relaxed a bit, sighing as she drew a hand over her brow as if to wipe away sweat. "Well, I was thinking of climbing in to stab 'em anyway. Arrows work though." She looked at him again, frowning. "Are you the guy putting traps everywhere? My mom forages stuff around here - and I love her, but she'd step in one'a those ropes in like a second if no one was with her. You trying to catch ladies in holes, is that your... 'game'?" There was a joke there, a double entendre maybe, and it made her grin, belying how serious she was (or wasn't) about her accusations.

While he wasn’t about to tell her to put her knife away he did find it amusing. Had be been the same when he was her age? Having that quick instinct would save her later in life, but then so would the ability to know when she was being watched. Without paying the young teen much thought, Hargitt slipped his bow back onto his back and started uncovering bits of rope around the edge of the hole.

Instead of having to jump down, possibly trapping himself in the process, Hargitt had tossed a net into the bottom. Now that his prey was no longer moving he was able to uncover a long length of rope, one he’d had affixed to two sides, join them, and start pulling the scrota up. “Then your mom’s not a very good forager.” If she had a keen eye for plants then she should have had a keen eye for holes. Hargitt grunted, gave one last final tug and lugged the chunky beast up to the surface.

Hearing that bit of play though caused Hargitt to level a hard, unamused star at the teen. “I don’t like women.”

Oh spirits, if Valerian was here he would have an aneurysm at someone insulting their mom, even passively. But Eujanie had to bite the inside her cheek to keep from barking out a laugh, and instead busied herself by putting her knife back in its sheath at her hip, watching with bright, curious eyes as he began to gather up the scrota with... a net!? She would've totally assumed that the scrota would stomp or cut through the rope at the bottom, but as he heaved its body up, she saw that wasn't the case at all.

"That's okay. Some people like women more than enough to make up for it." Eujanie responded with a shrug, padding around to the other side of the pit to watch him closer. "Are you gonna be around here long? 'Cause if you have too many scrota screaming around here, you might bring predators, and it'll be MY dad who has to take care of it. That's why you sneak up on scrota, and dont' just..." She gestured with her arms to the hole.

“Got one, didn’t I?” Hargitt shrugged his shoulders. Didn’t really matter to him how he caught the prey and this way he only wasted a little bit of time. Surely there were more heroic ways to make a kill, maybe ways her dad knew, but Hargitt didn’t care. A kill was a kill and tanners didn’t ask questions about where the hide came from.

“Just passing through anyway. Might be here for a day or two more, but we’ll be gone soon enough.” Once Hargitt had the scrota exposed he pulled a serrated knife from his boot. Lining it up just so, he cut into the underbelly with slow, precise actions and waited for its warm entrails to spill onto the ground. “Is that gonna make your dad mad? Having strangers around?” He needed to know if they were going to wake up to a knife in the gut.

A day or two? Eujanie opened her mouth to say something, but the guy interrupted by promptly slicing into the scrota - spilling blood out on the ground. She wrinkled her nose, leaning away from it as he worked. "It might if you leave guts everywhere." She pointed out. Usually, her dad collected up guts and things to use for other things - to make chum for fish, or to spread out away from the home, to keep predators far off. "Say, what's the chance I could get a leg or something? You know. And I could clean the guts up for ya?"

“Can’t move a body if it’s rotting. It’ll taint the meat.” It wasn’t as if he was planning on leaving the guts here either. He would string a trail of them far enough away that any predator lured by the smell would follow and not be a bother to the teen. Or maybe he wouldn’t have to.

Halting for a moment, Hargitt looked up and quirked a brow. Whoever she was the girl was used to a rougher lifestyle and the benefits to just giving in far outweighed the alternative. If he didn’t she might spread tales about him, which might lead to bad things for his group. So, he nodded and motioned to the carcass. “Take whichever you like, but make sure those guts get spread far; otherwise something will snatch up your mother instead.”

Really? Given his pretty grumpy attitude so far, Eujanie expected a 'budge off kid!' or something. Instead though, he looked at her intently for a moment, long enough that she propped her hands on her hips and raised her eyerbows expectantly... then he finally agreed.

"Seriously? You ever had stock made from scrota hoof? It's insanely good, you should give it a shot --" She babbled, excitedly.

Immediately her face lit up, and she moved forward, rolling up the sleeves of her top to above her elbows. As they talked, the man had already done most of the gutting, so she only had to wait until he'd completely removed the gut pile - at which point she moved in and, without hesitating, grabbed at it. Her actions spoke of familiarity - she wasn't good at field dressing, not like her dad, but she'd helped out enough that it was familiar to her. She knew where to grab so as not to pop the bladder or bowls.

She left the stranger to his work, and instead carried the gut pile off away from the pit, peering around. Ideally, the crystal grasses would be left unsullied, so her mom could look for pods here in a few days - so she picked her way towards the treeline instead, and began to spread the guts out the way her dad had showed her.

“Can’t say I have.” A bit of a smirk pulled at the edge of Hargitt’s mouth as he worked. Whatever he’d expected a conversation about field dressing and hoof stop wasn’t it. In an odd way it wasn’t an unpleasant experience. Of course he’d still rather be on his own, but there was worse company.

When she dove for the gut pile, Hargitt sat back in a crouch and simply observed. What would her parents think when she came back drenched in blood with a scrota’s leg? They’re likely used to it by now. Or maybe she didn’t have parents? Hargitt watched her a little closer after that, but with no immediate signs of starvation or poor care (beyond field dirt) he didn’t think that possible.

As she moved off Hargitt went back to his work. He lifted sinew, snapped tendons and gathered as much good meat as he could for packing. The huntsman was glad he’d packed a few extra packs that day, otherwise he wouldn’t have been able to bring both it and the hide back. When he had what he needed he fulfilled his end of the bargain and carefully cut a big, thick hind leg from the corpse and even went so far as to wrap it in a bit of linen to keep it from dripping.

Oh, Padma would probably have a heart attack. Uzumati, though, maybe he'd be proud that Eujanie had been so useful? ... No, more likely he'd be more concerned about her dealing with a stranger in exchange for a leg. 'Hm.' He would say to her, and it would probably mean something like 'You're lucky you didn't get a knife in your back, daughter, now come here so I can hug you.'

Or... something like that. Amused at her ponderings, Eujanie returned to the hunter, smearing blood onto her skirt, right along pre-existing grass stains and streaks of mud from her earlier adventures.

"Woah-- you already broke it down? You're fast!" She said, loudly, eyes locking on the wrapped chunk that was clearly leg, given as the hoof was sticking out of the linen wrappings.

Almost as soon as the girl’s loud voice hit his ears Hargitt was shushing her. His blue eyes were as hard as ice itself and for a moment he paused just to make sure they hadn’t been heard. “Keep your voice down and pray that this beast’s family isn’t around.” Otherwise it might be her guts in the grass next. He had no desire to see just what a larger beast’s tusks could do and could only hope the others had long since scattered.

“Before I give this to you I want you to tell me what you would have done if I weren’t here. Is that all you have? A knife?” Where was her bow? Or sword or whatever Taleans used? “Can you use magic at all?”
