Brooklyn was heading back towards St. Mags when she had first seen the creature. It wasn’t…cute but it wasn’t…scary either. It just looked…
Fat and kind of ugly. Like a deformed, furry frog.
For a few minutes, Brooklyn simply stared at the creature, and finally, her curiosity far began to outweigh any worry or discomfort that the thing might have caused, and so she got a stick, which seemed like it would be something safe, and when she had the stick in her hand, she crouched in front of the…whatever it was and poked it.
And then poked it again.
When it turned large, black eyes on her and opened its mouth…well, perhaps that was when she began to feel a little afraid. The rows and rows of teeth were rather intimidating, after all…
That and the fact she began to feel rather heavy. And rather tired…just like when her former benefactress had been showing her how it was to drain energy and…
Oh.
s**t.

Cara had been planning to head over to St. Mag's and surprise Brooklyn with a visit. It wasn't quite curfew, classes should be over, and there should be some time for her to check in on her friend and make sure that Brooklyn was still doing okay.
Hopefully better than okay, but...well...it was St. Mag's.
Apparently, she and Brooklyn were heading back the same way--and so she smiled, and started to wave.
"Hey, Brooklyn!" She called, and then started jogging--which was good, because.
Oh.
Oh no.
That was definitely a youma, looming towards her and Cara took a second to weigh her options--but only a second, because mid-stride, she was changing into Casablanca. It didn't matter if Brooklyn was in the Negaverse. She would protect her either way.
"Get away from her," the Page snapped, and she launched herself at the creature, slamming a heeled shoe into its side.

Brooklyn had turned at the sound of her name, frowning slightly to try and push back the wave of tiredness that was trying to engulf her as the youma drained her energy.
…It was Cara…but, if Cara ended up getting hurt….all because Brooklyn was a fool who poked random creatures…
“N-no, wait…”
Her voice faltered slightly, and she really wanted to warn Cara to stay away but…but then suddenly…suddenly Cara was someone else, and Brooklyn frowned and reached a hand up to rub her eyes. “...What?”
This…she…Cara was…
Well, Cara was coming after the creature that was taking Brooklyn’s energy, and when she slammed her heel into it, it let out an ear splitting shriek and turned to dust, spluttering.
Brooklyn simply stared and blinked, confused and tired, but feeling better by the moment as some of her energy was returned. “...Um. What was that. Who. I mean. Who are you? What are you? You were Cara for…I mean. I saw Cara and then…”
And then this person was here. “I don’t understand…”

Casablanca's heart was still racing, even when the creature turned to dust under her fancy heels. It was just...terrifying, to be reminded of how much a threat even the smallest, weakest youma was to an ordinary person. Why it was so important that she had magic at her beck and call.
"It's okay," she said, and she put her hands up in what she hoped was a reassuring gesture, since the only thing in them was her pretty little white flag. "I--I am Cara, just...fancier? Magical?"
Ah, s**t, how did she explain this.
"So, um. Some people in this city? And maybe other places, I don't know? Have fancy magical powers, and we can use those magical powers to do good things or bad things. So, most of the time I'm Cara, but sometimes I get to call on special sparkly magical powers, and I become Casablanca, Page of Cosmos? Which is kinda who I am right now. Like, uh. Superheroes, basically?"
Ugh. What a stupid explanation. But it was the best she could manage on the fly.

“But you’re like…not in the Negaverse right? I…I know about them at least. And I know that they’re bad news…you aren’t with them…you can’t be.”
Cara was so nice, and Brooklyn couldn’t believe that she could be involved with people that do such bad things. “...What’s a Page? What do you mean? Is that…is that like a Senshi? I’ve heard that word thrown about too…can’t you just…explain it all to me? Cara? Please?”
Elliot and Atticus had known something she was sure of it, but they had been reluctant to explain things, and so had Dagon but…but Cara would tell her. She trusted Cara…she was her friend…her mentor. “I need to know, I mean, clearly I keep getting dragged into this so…can’t you just tell me so I know what’s going on? Please?”

Oh. Oh, no, poor Brooklyn--apparently already tangled in this terrible, messy world, but clearly not magical herself. Cara took a deep breath, and nodded.
"I can explain everything to you, yeah. If you already know about Senshi, and the Negaverse--you know enough to be in danger and not enough to protect yourself. So." The only way to make sure she was safe was to tell her the whole truth.
"There are different kinds of magical people. I don't...really entirely know the difference, sorry? But there's Senshi, and Knights, and we're the good guys. And the Negaverse, they've got officers and Senshi fo their own,a dn they're the bad guys. It's really super cheesy, but if someone is wearing mostly black, or dark colors, they're probably a bad guy, and if they're wearing mostly white, or lgiht colors, they're probably a good guy, because I guess the magic that runs the universe likes things nice and color coded."
She wrapped her hands around her little cloth, and twisted it in her hands. "Following so far?"

No, not really at all, but Brooklyn nodded and shrugged. “I mean. I guess so. Kind of. Is it really so simple? LIke…how do you know that they’re the bad guys? Like…the girl I met, she seemed so nice...even if she lied about getting me a dress, but…I just…I don’t know. She was strange but, still nice.”
Brooklyn drew in a slow breath, trying to let her mind catch up to everything that had happened in the last few minutes.
“...My other friends told me that the Negaverse set fire to one of their houses, and tried to kill the other so…so I know that obviously they must not be…not be the most savory group but…how…how long have you been doing this, Cara? How did you start?”

"Um," Casablanca said, and she exhaled. "I know they're the bad guys because I've seen them do terrible things, and...like, let's be honest? Being able to reach into somebody's chest and pull out their soul is like...not great?"
Sure, it was definitely more complex than that, but Casablanca felt like she had a pretty good handle on the morality here.
"I've been doing this since last December. I just sort of...became magical one day, there was this vicious reindeer or something? And it attacked me and somebody else, and we both...poof. This appeared in front of me," she held up her little flag, "and I grabbed it, and...I was Casablanca and I could kick its butt, like I did the thing that was attacking you."

That…honestly, that sounded like the most unbelievable part of all of this, and Brooklyn frowned, wrinkling her nose slightly. “How…do I even replicate those conditions…? Is there any other way to get in on this?” She paused, wondering if she really did want to get in on this, and then she decided that…well. That she did. She wanted to protect Elliot and Atticus if she could…protect them from the people that had hurt the both of them…and…
If she had to fight a reindeer to do it…well.
There had to be an internet video on just how to do that. Maybe.

"I...don't think it's that specific," Casablanca frowned, and she looked down at her little cloth. "I think maybe you just need to be in danger, or something? Because there's a lot more Kngihts outt here than could possibly have started under those....super specific...circumstances. And Senshi are totally different I think."
Not that she actually knew, ugh.
"But please!! Don't start putting yourself in danger, I don't want you to get hurt because of this, it could all go wrong really easily and I might not actually know what the hell I'm talking about."

Brooklyn gave a slight smile and nodded. “I don’t want to get into danger, don’t worry but…I think I’d like to be able to protect people. It sounds…really nice, actually. Someone should be able to protect those that…that need it.”
Her mind was on those in the foster system more than just…people in the Negaverse…honestly, most of the foster families in the world must…well. Must be corrupt and awful…and maybe if she had magic...she could do something to punish those who needed it…it…
She supposed that would make her a vigilante and not a hero but…
Brooklyn would be a hero to some. “Were…were you coming to see me? Thank you for saving me…”

Casablanca nodded, and she let out a breath, powering down into Cara.
"Exactly. It's...really cool, being able to protect people. And there are lots of people who need protecting." From regular and magical dangers.
"I was coming to see you, yeah. Wanted to check in and see how things are going so far. And I'm glad I did." She huffed. "Come on, why don't we walk the rest of the way back to St. Mag's? That way I can make sure you don't get in any more trouble."

Brooklyn nodded. “That sounds good to me, yeah. I’m…I’m happy you wanted to visit me.” And she was happy that she got to know this secret life of Cara’s too…it…
Honestly, it made her feel special…and…
And the cynical part of her mind told her that it gave some leverage to keep Cara in her life regardless…this was a secret that Brooklyn had to keep, after all.
…And she would but…it wasn’t often that she had such a surety.
