Jadarite's tablet notified her of an incoming call, registered to Headache. If she accepted the call, she would see a slightly grainy, tinted recording of the flaming boy who called himself her boss. The lower half of his face was buried in his hands and he sighed so thoroughly that his shoulders rose and fell.

"What a ******** mess," the tinny recording echoed. "Don't know where to begin with all of that. Don't know who'll stay or leave. Imagine I won't be seeing the brothers again." His voice dropped to a whisper at the end of his sentence.

"Need to salvage what's left. Get Albite on interpersonal damage control. Lilith too. Think I can get Alkmene to look out for any leaks on their identities, since this team's developed a leak problem. Need Tama watched. Celadonite could do that. Could keep Mizuki with Prehnite 'til this simmers down. And Jadarite —" He sighed. "Don't know how I can ask her to lead the team now."

Something flashed offscreen. Faustite paused, turned toward it. "What are you doing? Are you trying to get me to smile? ******** asinine."

The purple-hued image of Faustite rolled his eyes. He waved his hand as if dismissing something, then started to pace, and the camera tracked him with a slight delay.

"Whatever. Call Jadarite."

A buzzing erupted near the microphone, and a flash whited out the screen for a brief moment.

"Jadarite. Can you talk?"

Jadarite looked at the tablet, lips pressed thin, as Faustite's name flashed across it and the tone sounded. She waited one second. Two. Three.

She let a long, hissy breath out through her nose and rolled her eyes once at the sky before she accepted the call, so that when the camera caught her features, there was only the everyday level of annoyance in her features. One eyebrow was already raised, but that was a natural state for her.

He was her boss. Recent events, beyond just what had happened at her home, were making her rethink the amount of respect he had for her, but sighing in his face like she was a middle schooler who had been kicked out of a clique wasn't the kind of image she wanted to project to him.

She would still work for him. She would still work for the system until somebody saw her merit.

Which, meant the comment about asking her to lead had her blinking, but she was sure she'd misheard it.

She simply adjusted the tablet and said, "I'm available."

Wanted to apologize for… All of that. Wasn't fielded well." He would've admitted that he didn't know how to lead, but he likewise wasn't sure if it was frowned upon to admit that he didn't know what he was doing to a subordinate. "Became more of an irreconcilable mess than I expected.

"Presents an opportunity for you, however."
He paused, then added, "If you want it.

"Team wanted for a Mirror ally before Waru and Aelius showed. Need someone to manage team affairs while I focus on that."

"To be fair, what went poorly was not your fault."

He'd handled Murikabushi properly by asking for help when he felt in over his head. It had been others who had shown up and made things worse, and then that tension had followed her into her apartment. She'd cooled her heels about what had happened there, about the wine. The drama with the brothers was none of her concern so she hadn't thought about it after they'd walked through her doors.

It was his other comment that had her freeze for a moment, and then her lips twitched.

So, she hadn't misheard.

After everything, after Alkmene, he was trying to get her to do more of his work without giving her any of the respect that was meant to come with that kind of responsibility.

If anything, the request confirmed some suspicions that had been lingering in her mind in recent weeks.

"Don't you have Eternals for that?" she asked, and she wasn't able to keep all of the middle school passive aggression out of her voice.

Faustite's face showed naked surprise and consternation before he quickly about-faced for another stretch of pacing.

"I do, but you're still a Captain. Think you'll make a fine leader, but I have to build a portfolio of evidence. Can't just tell Hessonite, 'promote that one', and expect her to agree to it.

You've done a lot, but my reputation's been collateral damage since some members defected. Don't expect I have the same level of trust that I did."
Because if those ones left, then what was to say that any agents he vouched for wouldn't do the same after gaining access to more Negaverse intelligence and power? He understood the rationale as coolly careful if troublesome for having to be more careful for advocating for his team members.

"Besides. Team might prefer being led by someone human. Less fire. Less starseed addiction."

The screen blurred for a moment as Jadarite shifted her position.

"You have no influence?" she asked, her voice even. It wasn't the Generals who decided who rose through the ranks when it came to the final decision, but their recommendation had power.

"I'm not desperate for rank, but if you want me in a leadership position, being a Captain puts me at a disadvantage, human or no. You saw how Albite ignored what I said that night. You saw how he apologized to you instead of me when he made the wrong call. I know he's a wildcard regardless, but my point stands."

There were other complications, too. What would new recruits think when they came in and saw a Captain trying to order around Eternals? It would undermine the entire structure of the Negaverse.

"I won't lie and say that you don't have my curiosity," she said. It was the kind of assignment that could lead to her promotion, she was sure. "I would like to help where I can, but I also understand that such help might be limited when I can only give orders to the lowest of our ranks."

Faustite sighed as he felt his impetus to hold this conversation quickly waning. Perhaps he should've expected backlash of any kind because of the night they'd had so recently. Or, just as likely, his horrible way with words could've been what drove rifts between him and others.

He knew Jadarite was cool. Knew she could lead, could command respect, could end conflicts without someone being reduced to a fresh coat of red paint. She was cute and stylish, knew how to make money, knew how to keep a clean and well-organized house. She was many things that Eion was not, nor would he ever be, and often wished he could've been. But even she must've found him irritating. It exhausted him.

"Your point says that Albite doesn't listen to anyone." Which was true. Could've been Jet telling the boy what to do, and he'd break rank to do whatever it was that Albite thought was a good idea at the time. Faustite was surprised that he'd managed to control himself when the pair met him in the Rift. He'd gotten on Jet's nerves a fair few times, but that was simply the boy's nature — unruly. It said little of Jadarite's ability to lead.

"Understand that. Could ask Kamacite to oversee the basics while I'm gone. Wanted you to have the opportunity first, but I won't hold you to it." If she wasn't interested, then she wasn't interested. He'd been careful about refraining from ordering her to take up the surrogate position; commands were best reserved for the battlefield where disobedience returned dire consequences. This was meant as a favor to himself and a means for Jadarite to show her excellence to the Negaverse's sovereigns.

He turned again in his pacing. "Going to be gone for a while. Week or two, pending anything unforeseen. Not expecting you to run missions or counsel members, but I need you to manage the basics — quota collection, reports, keeping the office in order. If anyone asks you for their weekly check-in and they've not been assigned to you, tell them they've been postponed to my return."

She wasn't sure that the clarifications made her feel better or worse about things. She didn't want some dummied down form of leadership. She didn't want quota spreadsheets and the rest of the paperwork with no power behind it.

That was what she was saying.

However, she certainly didn't want this Kamacite, who she didn't even know, to be the one taking an opportunity, however questionable, away from her fingertips. She nodded quickly when she heard the name, before Faustite could even go into the rest of his explanations.

"That's fine, then. I'll do my best, sir."

She slipped into formality to keep from voicing more concerns and having her General change his mind. Although, the confirmation that he was going away had her raising an eyebrow at the screen.

"When are you leaving?" she asked. "There was something I wanted to ask you about. I've found a potential recruit, a banking director who seemed interested."

It was a shame it would probably be out of line to tell Faustite that he was attractive, because that would be what it took to stop him from pacing so much that he would wear holes in his floor.

Faustite blinked at the sudden acceptance, but made no further comment on it. H'ed have to ask Waru to translate his conversations for him at a later date; he was certain he was misunderstanding something vital.

"Leaving once I sort some affairs. Expect it to be in a month." Truthfully, he wasn't certain how long it would take for the debacle with Murikabushi to reach a resolution, but he understood his own bandwidth for it to be about a month. Whether or not their talks reached a satisfying conclusion by then, he didn't know. He could only hope that they would.

"Tell me about the recruit. Consider this conversation the formal request." It would save them some paperwork, too.

"Assume this one would be one of your subordinates."

Of course her acceptance was concise. He'd addressed both her concerns and her requests, and it would have been inefficient to draw things out farther. She was still itching for another promotion, but for that it would be better to stay in Faustite's good graces rather than ranting at him for things that were technically outside of his control.

Her other request was of much more interest to her, now.

She was fine with this being a formal request, too. It saved her paperwork

"His name is Adam Bal," she told him. "A few years older than me. I would take him on as a subordinate, yes." Some of the others might be able to handle him, but she wanted him and she wasn't about to be coy about it. "He'd be a good fit for Infiltration, anyway. He's a director at a bank, as I said. I can send his credentials to you if you need them to make a decision, but anyone who can help the Negaverse access quality financial services would be helpful."

She'd put a link to those credentials and his contact information in her tablet, and she sent it over as he spoke.

"I came across him in my personal life, and he struck me as intelligent and driven. I mentioned our organization. Vaguely, nothing that would give us away if he was a plainclothes enemy, but he seemed curious, at which point I decided to bring it to you."

Helpful that he didn't have to walk Jadarite through the required information before he could add anyone to their ranks. He knew he'd have to do precisely that for Albite, and besides him, he'd only been tapped once by Lilith for bringing her brother in. Fafnir's experience in obtaining a subordinate had been that of an accident, and a heart too kind to put the witness down. But Jadarite? She'd already sent Headache the details.

As soon as he heard good fit for Infiltration, Faustite accepted that this boy's benefits to the Negaverse were beyond his realm of expertise. Jadarite had been working in Infiltration long enough; between that and her efficiency, Faustite needn't look into this one himself.

"No need," he returned. "Trust you know what you're doing." And if this boy proved himself a problem, that was more a reflection on her than him. Still, he didn't expect that Jada's picks would prove troublesome.

"See about contacting him. Will bring him in before I leave. Headache will notify you when it's time to train your new recruit. Be in touch after I come back to see his progress — want to discuss your part of the mission, too.

"If there's nothing else, I'm signing off."

The confirmation of his trust was a plus, although Jadarite hoped that there was more to it, that he was truly writing those reports to the Sovereigns for her and not just stringing her along to eternal subordination. Not that it seemed like him, but she was getting impatient.

She'd just manage everything well for him, then, and see to it that Adam was as good of a recruit in person as he was on paper. If all that went well, surely nobody would disapprove of her writing her own promotion letter.

That would come in time, though. She saw no need to extend this conversation.

"Nothing more," she said.

Her tablet screen flickered and went black.
