She hadn't wasted any time bringing Encke up to Pendour the very second that he'd been available. Doing conversations in order had never been a priority for her, and so she'd been whispering her oath before she'd even gotten to hello, and now they were standing in the familiar crossroads at the center of her wonder.

The air smelled of salt when Pendour took a breath of it, trying to make sure that she was calm before she tried talking to anyone else, and she rubbed her fingers across Encke's knuckles.

"Do you want to go sit by the water?" she asked, her voice soft. "Or, um, to the gardens, maybe?"

A pink sticky note materialized in front of her face, with a butterfly signet stamped into it in glittery ink. Without blinking, Pendour caught it and sent it off to her subspace pocket, her full focus on her friend.

Encke did always appreciate her jumping right into things.

He breathed the fresh salty air. He breathed it in for a few seconds. He let it out, because even though his breath control was quite solid as an actor, getting beyond four in his count was difficult when his anxiety threatened to consume him in its entirety.

He took it in.

He let it out.

"Water feels so uniquely Pendour compared to Encke. We have these little streams and rivers," which he was fairly sure were in some ways artificially created by some Enckeans thousands of years ago, but there was no verifying that other than references he heard in his memories, "but it's not quite the same thing. Let's go to the water."

Not that the gardens weren't beautiful, and not that he'd reject them either, but--

Though, "Have you had anything new grow lately? There's some things on Encke I gotta show you."

"I'll get more plants in the spring," she said, with a brief, wistful glance over towards the gardens. "That's when the selection's best. What I have already is growing, though. The trees are getting bigger. Everything is filling in."

She didn't let go of his hand as she walked down the mosaic path, down towards the waterfalls and the cove. Since she'd gotten it all fixed up, she'd found herself spending a lot more time over in this part of her wonder, too. It brought her peace, feeling mist on her skin and watching the bubbles and the eddies that formed where the cascades hit.

Sometimes, if it was really a lot, she'd go sit on the bottom and feel the ripples move across her skin. That was nice.

For the moment, she just sat cross-legged by the shore, gently tugging on him so that he could sit with her if he wanted.

"Would it help to talk about it, more, or do you just want to sit here for a little while?"

"That does sound lovely," he offered, as he followed her gaze and then followed her, keeping their hands joined. "Maybe we could stop by before I leave for the day? I'd like to see how everything's filling out."

Their gardens were so mutually important to both of them. Felt right to check on them, at least.

When she sat, he took a moment to admire the cove and the beautiful shores. He could remember when it wasn't like this, when she spoke of bones and all he saw was a trickle of water as she cleared and attempted to make this place as nice as it was now. Made him think of himself in a lot of ways; he had never seen it that way, seeing it as his escape when he was first reemerging from his traumas, but he could see these days why people might have thought Encke's original state might have been desolate.

He shook himself out of it and sat down next to her.

"Could we sit for a few minutes, first?"

Encke shot her a smile.

"It's nice here."

"Of course I'll show you in a little while," said Pendour, because even if she'd been bringing more visitors to the cove now that the main feature of her wonder was fixed up, it wasn't like she needed much convincing to go visit her plants.

For the moment, though, he wanted to stay, and she understood that, too.

She nodded, and then time passed where she didn't offer anything other than her presence. She slipped into silence. She nudged a little closer to him, laying her head over his shoulder. Her eyes stayed open. She didn't think this would be like with Abzu, where falling asleep right away would help with things, but she did go still. Even her fidgeting was contained to one hand, where she played with some of her beads.

She was about to ask Encke if he wanted a song when a soft sqeak caught her attention.

She looked over, and there was an bluish-grey otter crawling from the water. Not only that, but it had a fish tail.

A soft gasp escaped Pendour's lips.

Encke tried to immerse himself in the quiet.

Tried, of course, was the operative word. As anxious as he was generally fidgety, he still found himself looking around, observing, tuning into other noises, bouncing his foot, and tapping his fingers-- but he seemed at least less immediately nervous as he may come across over text.

His attention had been something on the sky of the dome when he heard her gasp, and he let out a, "Hm?" before he turned his head fully to see what she was looking at.

Oh.

Oh.

"An otter?" He already sounded reverent, leaning in to take a look at what was crawling out of the water. "Have you seen one before?"

Was her wonder now getting life like his homeworld? Like Keiko's world? Like Kerberos'? Like Anser's, like Aokigahara's, like--

That was delightful.

"An otter," Pendour repeated, once she found her breath, because she was just as entranced as her friend. Perhaps she was even more taken, because this was personal. She wasn't even an animal person, but her eyes felt misty all the same. She leaned forwards, too, her head slightly tilted towards the sighted side.

Her Wonder had come so far.

Behind the first otter, a much smaller one appeared from the water. It shook its head so that droplets flew from its whiskers, and it followed the bigger one, a little wobbly on its two mammal feet.

"I've seen some other things," she told him, her voice even softer than usual because she didn't know how these things worked, but she knew she didn't want to startles them. "Oysters, and butterflies, and different kinds of fish. I'm starting to get some really beautiful ones." If they looked, they could see a flash of silver scales every once in a while under the water's surface. "But no, I haven't seen these."

The first otter seemed curious, while the baby hung back. It came up to Encke and bumped him with its nose.

There were two of them.

One of them was a baby.

Encke was not necessarily prone to squealing, but he didn't quite stop the small noise of delight that left his lips anyway. He could tell by Pendour's reaction that these were new to her too, and by the way she started to whisper, he needed to keep his voice to a reasonable level.

She confirmed that much for him while she spoke of her other creatures, and he found himself seeking out signs of any of the others. A sparkle in the waters brought an even wider smile onto his face, but his attention was soon taken by the otter bumping him with their nose.

He was delighted.

He wasn't sure if otters were supposed to be pet, and he wasn't sure of this type of otter especially, but he carefully reached a hand out to see if it would like to be touched.

"That's how it happened for me too. Started with insects and smaller creatures, and now we have mice, cats, eels," he laughed quietly. "Feels like I'm watching an ecosystem rebuild."

The otter did, indeed, like to be touched. With another squeak, it shoved its nose into Encke's hand. Even that didn't seem to be quite enough for it. It put two paws on one of his knees, and then hurled itself into his lap, fish tail and all.

Pendour giggled again, and she couldn't stop herself from laughing more as the baby tried to do the same to her, only to not quite be able to reach her knee and fall down on the floor instead. She scooped it up with one hand to place it in the folds of her dress, not minding at all that it was slightly damp.

She could see these little things absolutely charming anyone who came by to the cove, and they were still doing that job just perfectly a thousand years later.

"I always like watching this place come back to life," she murmured once she'd stopped laughing enough to properly breathe again. "When I transcended, I felt like I'd finished something, but I'm glad I wasn't truly done. I love these new friends, and all the life we've been seeing everywhere."

She looked over at Encke, considered.

"Have you gotten any interesting creatures, lately?"

That would probably get his mind off worrying about his sister, for a little while.

Encke had been delighted enough by the otter encouraging the pets. When it promptly hurled itself out of the water and into his lap, he might have been momentarily euphoric, and he absolutely lavished the creature with as much attention as it wanted.

Reminded him of Viatrix when she was trying to emulate cat behaviours a bit more ... or when she wasn't and was just being generally clingy. Luz, too, would just walk over and set her head in their lap.

Encke found himself appreciating the similarities, but the uniqueness, too. The tail was uniquely Pendour, he thought.

"Me too. Feels nice to know there's still more to do in improving these places. Feels like we're really bringing them back to what they should be." What they once were, after whatever had happened to all their planets. Sure, Encke had long since dedicated part of his senshi time to helping others restore their planets where he could, but something still felt especially nice about seeing his own comet blossom.

Anything interesting lately...

"Have I told you about the small cats? Best way I can think of to describe them," he pet the otter carefully, quite happy to let it keep snuggling there. "Fur reminds me kind of like fiber optic trees. They like people and each other; I've caught a few purposefully gathering and traveling together."

He tapped his chin in thought as he pet the otter.

"And have I mentioned the birds I've started seeing? There's one that hangs out around the city in particular. Feather patterning reminds me of my own skin. Well. Their skin, anyway."

Pendour's smile was soft, but that didn't take away from its brightness. Of course it was easy to have a moment happiness when there was a baby otter curled up in her lap, but what really made her glow was watching the way that Encke's face shifted into something gentle when he spoke of his comet, and the asteroid there.

Cats sounded lovely, and birds. "It's all coming such a long way," she said, still smiling. "I remember back when we had to struggle just to get a little garden plot going."

Now that effort was multiplying beyond what she could imagine, and she'd heard rumors of something similar happening on other planets. In Pendour's mind, she could almost see life walking through the galaxy, stretching her fingers out to coax and create beautiful things, much the way she walked through a cold valley at the first sign of spring.

Right now she was more focused on Encke than the wider world, though. It was him that she was smiling at. "You've been a good nurturer for it, though," she told him. "For a lot of other things, too. For Nectaris."

A moment passed while she let that hang in the air. She stroked her otter.

"Is it okay if I tell you a story?" she asked. "It's about her."

"Same."

His voice was laced with affection for the planets and wonders, affection for the creatures and plants and water and electricity that flowed within them, affection for the work they had done together and separate -- their places had all come such a long way, and if he wasn't actively petting this happy sea otter in his lap, there would be a part of his brain that would have had trouble believing it.

Encke couldn't imagine what he'd tell that traumatized seventeen-year-old fresh out of Barren Pines now, to be honest.

She was more focused on him, but for a moment, he was focused on the past and the present reality. A moment, because the next she was smiling at him and complimenting his work, and he couldn't help the mild rosy shade to his usually paler (and still quite freckled, even with the lessened sunlight of the fall) cheeks.

And bringing up a story of Nectaris.

His brows lifted in curiosity. She likely knew plenty that he didn't; they were texting and writing to each other right under his nose, and of course they knew each other. Livie lived in his house, and Sadie was a frequent visitor.

But what did she know that he didn't in relation to his nurturing? (When had he become a nurturer?) "I'm an actor, Pen," his smile was the kind of brilliant smile that he flashed at the paparazzi. "I love a good story."

With permission to speak of something beyond her creatures and her cove, Pendour stilled for a few seconds and went completely silent, gathering her thoughts. Her chin was tilted upwards, her gaze locked on something far away, beyond the empty sea.

"I met Sylvite, you know," she said. He probably didn't know. She hadn't brought it up, before. "A while ago, before she started questioning the Negaverse. She was with another agent. I won't forget that encounter."

Her shoulders did not tense. Her voice did not harden. Pendour had forgiven. She'd moved on, mostly, but the memories stayed.

"They had someone's starseed out. I think I had to bargain for it, talk to them a little, but I got it back, and then-" she swallowed, just once, "They were threatening the body. To maim it, I mean, implying things about how once they did, I'd be cruel to put the starseed back. I'd be cruel to let them live broken."

She didn't think she had to spell out to Encke the way that they'd been trying to trigger her, or the way that it had worked. He'd seen the way she'd reacted, back on Astraya, to his robot's innocent comment about breaking.

That night, she'd saved someone, but when she'd gotten home, she'd cried and cried anyway. "I just remember her smiling," said Pendour. She looked over to Encke, then down at her own hands.

"I was there when she ambushed Cybele, too. Ambushed all of us, really. I almost died that night, and she was the leader." She went quiet again, and shifted to show the scar that cut across the back of her arm and then just across her back. It was a deep mark, and bumpy. Jet had done it, but he hadn't been the one calling the shots in that instance.

She turned to Encke, her smile soft. "You got her away from all that," she said. "It was her choice, but you helped nurture it." She leaned over to press her forehead into his shoulder again, even if it meant she couldn't give the otter in her lap quite the same level of attention.

"In doing that, you helped protect me from what other things might have happened, if she'd remained. You protected a lot of people from a Negaverse General, from somebody very broken."

She went silent for another moment. The waters trickled down into the cove, and Pendour watched the ripples.

"Now she just wants to save people, it sounds like. She got Ganymede, and now she wants to go back for more." She wasn't sure how Encke would take it, but she said, anyway, "It sounds like you've inspired her."

She was right, he didn't know.

Encke and Sylvite had talked a few times before she purified, but her knowing anyone outside of a couple of people had never really become relevant. And once she purified, well, it had become an adventure of her reexploring everyone she once easily knew. He hadn't thought of asking Pendour if Nectaris had been familiar to her as Sylvite. Figured Pendour might have brought it up herself if she was; sounded like it hadn't really been relevant to anything until that moment because Nectaris was different now, and Pendour had moved on from it.

He still lifted an arm to squeeze her a bit closer to his side, anyway.

No, she didn't need to spell it out. He knew. Encke knew that the broken implication stung her for multiple reasons, and knew that it would sting even harder to imply it wasn't worth living that way. To think of Nectaris that way, considering the way they had met, was a bit jarring.

But he did know the realities of being that deep in the Negaverse, too. It was why it was a place that was so hard to come back from. It was why a lot of people who were that deep didn't even want to.

Sylvite had wanted to.

"I inspired her?"

Encke let out a quiet laugh at that, glancing out to the water himself. It was odd to think of himself as an inspiration for anyone, even now. He knew he stood in a rare position. He had been part of this war to some degree for thirteen years. He knew he had helped people, knights, and senshi, and agents and corrupted senshi, more times than he could really keep track of. Hadn't thought it necessary to. It wasn't like he was trying to keep track of a debt he needed to equate.

"Guess I'm the source of my own stress then," Encke laughed again because he didn't quite mean it like that. "I'm... glad I helped protect people from a Negaverse General. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. You know I always have your back." Because he did. "And I'm glad she wants to save people. I am. I love that about her. I love that she's working to give people the chance she had, even that deep in."

He worried over his bottom lip.

Petting the otter with his other hand helped, and her head against his shoulder helped. Pulled his attention from the pang in his heart that spoke of multitudes of even just the past year. "I just ... I worry. Wish I could protect her better. The people she's bringing herself near, people like Faustite," he shuddered, "that guy's made attempts on my life, sure -- but I've also rescued several starseeds from him. I've rescued Basi's starseed from him. And I know he won't hesitate to take Nectaris's or drag her back to the Negaverse for a new force corruption if that's what's asked of him."

He didn't want the loss of self to happen to anyone.

It was part of why he was so passionate about transcendence.

If they may die, at least they would die as themselves. At least they could be reborn as themselves, whatever form that new life might take, instead of not at all. And he didn't want her to die at all either, that was his sister, but if her starseed was protected, that would be one less avenue--

"Guess she will end up further away from him because she's no longer dating Albite. Faustite didn't approve of that one." He let out a huff of air that wasn't quite a sigh. "Also doesn't exactly approve of her being a so-called traitor..." Or of him really.

Encke could have as much time as he needed to listen, to process. The otter in Pendour's lap started wriggling and pushing its nose into the folds of her dress, so she sat up so she could try to adjust it before it ripped anything, but she didn't go far from him. She leaned her shoulder against his, instead.

"I think we all cause ourselves stress sometimes," she said with a smile that tilted a little towards the edges.

There were a lot of choices that Pendour had made that had her questioning things, later own. There was always the chance that the choices she was making in the war, even as peaceful as she was trying to be, could have the opposite effect. She could save someone's life and they could go on to hurt a lot of people.

Those thoughts kept her up sometimes, as much as her normal regrets did.

"And it's like I said earlier. When we bond with other people, there's always a risk in that. I know that the times that Jet has come after me, for example, it's been hard, but when he came after you?" She shook her head. "That was when I panicked. I hated seeing you get hurt. I think I know what you mean, about her. I don't know much about Faustite, other than what I've heard secondhand, but I don't think I'd want my brother going after him, either."

Her brother, the senshi. That one, Encke would know. Even if she hadn't brought it up, which she had, she didn't think Viatrix would be able to hold back the fact that she'd awakened someone new.

"How do you bear it with me?" she asked, and it was a serious question, a problem solving one, not something rhetorical. "When I'm always getting into trouble? I remember showing up at your house with this still healing," she waved at her face, "And you didn't bat an eye."
