A strange fog rolls in once you land here. You lose sight of nearly everything, including the game board. If you want to roll, you’re going to have to get close to the ground to even see where you’re supposed to go next. Hopefully nothing sneaks up behind you.

There was a certain irony, Ran decided, that this was a giant gameboard and he was the senshi of games. The die had seemed innocent enough. It was why he'd picked it up! It was why he'd rolled it! It seemed like it'd be fine! It was not fine!

The fog that now surrounded him in the already-dark area told him it was very not fine. Not even 'dog in burning house' levels of not fine. Ran turned in place, most of all looking behind him. Was there a path backwards?

No.

Of course not.

The hair on the back of his neck prickled as he looked down at the die in his hand. Ran had to resist the urge to hurl it as far away from himself as he could. He had the feeling that would only make his situation worse. It had gotten him into this situation, and he was starting to get the idea that it was his way to get out of the situation, also.

He tossed it experimentally to the ground. Nothing happened. He knew vaguely where it had landed, but crouched down to look at it after a minute of nothing else happening. He took note of the number and looked up, ahead on the game board.

Something puffed air against the back of his neck.

Ran bolted.

You hear a shrill, humming noise; it sounds almost like something is firing past you–and sometimes, you even feel a sharp burst of air, like something has just missed you. Maybe, even, it does get a slice out of you. Sharp, bladelike threads seem to string up around you; you’d best be careful not to get cut on any of them between now and your next dice roll.

Ran didn't trust that the shrill noise wasn't whatever had just breathed on him. He didn't know anything about anything involving projectile weapons, not having any way to know any better until he heard the distinct whizzing sound past his ear and felt the near-miss along his cheek. He skidded to a stop, a glint in the fog telling him that something was off up ahead. His steps were more cautious, then. He saw the threads, then. Like spider silk, but he realised immediately after touching one that it hadn't come out of any spider he knew of.

He stuck his finger in his mouth to stem the bead of blood forming and looked around. Now what? What if whatever had breathed on him was coming after him? He couldn't just stand there and look at the razor wire that had strung up around him. Was something actively trying to catch him, or had he just set off a trap? Was it related to the thing from before?

He wasn't keen to find out. Ran reached out with a hand again, but using the fabric of his skirt as a shield against the razorwire.

It sliced through the fabric like it amounted to nothing, and Ran hurriedly dropped his hand before the strings could find purchase on his skin again.

Now what?

Now what?

Ran wasn't sure if he was imagining the air moving against his neck, but he wasn't keen to stay around. It seemed like he'd had to roll the die, and so he gave it another shot and prayed it would land him somewhere a bit better than this. He wasn't sure how he'd get out of the razorwire, but surely there was some way? Maybe if he backed up and went around---

Something is twitching and flapping above you, and while you might be minding your own business, something is a little too invested in what you’re doing. You can’t see them, but you suddenly hear shrill, high pierced noises that are disorienting and confusing. They can bring about dizziness and pain and can cause vertigo if you’re stuck in them for too long.

Backing up very, very carefully seemed to help. He checked the number he'd rolled again then craned his neck to see if he could get around the razor wire. Now that he'd backed up a couple steps, almost to the border of the space, he could see a narrow path through--

He was very eager to keep moving, putting that particular hazard far behind him.

Ran took a deep breath and let it out slowly, relieved when he didn't see any more dangerous glints ahead of him. This was the worst patrol ever. It didn't quite top the fight in the park, when he'd felt something cold and evil rise in his chest. Viatrix had helped a lot with dealing with that, and he'd appreciated the reassurance afterward that it had been the Negaverse, not him himself per se, but...

That hadn't been a patrol. This had been a patrol, and it was the worst patrol ever.

He'd moved the number of spaces the die had indicated, and--at first--didn't think anything was happening. Ran was totally willing to pause and enjoy the relative normalcy. Movement overhead caught his attention, though, and in the next second his head swam under the onslaught of shrill noises that bit into his ears at the same time. He clapped his hands over his ears, but that didn't help much beyond taking the edge off. It was starting to make his stomach turn, and Ran realised he didn't know which way he'd come.

Sensing a pattern, Ran rolled the die again, took a look at the number, grabbed it back up, and ran.

'Hopefully, in the right direction--

Something slithers across your foot, so fast that you might have thought you imagined it. Except, a few seconds later, it happens again. And then, again. Snakes keep moving across your space. If you move, they see you–and they might bite. Some of them hiss, some are capable of spraying a poisonous liquid that can cause itchiness or burning.

He didn't go far before having to stop and catch his breath. Ran took a moment to ponder how quickly he was getting winded, but that was wrenched off of its tracks by the feeling of something moving over his foot. Slithering over his foot.

Now, Ran wasn't afraid of snakes. He liked them, actually!

But feeling it again, and again, and again? That was too much. He danced backward, yelling and kicking his feet out. He could hear the hisses, and he could see that some of them were looking at him.

In fact, they looked at him more the more he moved and waved his arms and yelled.

One reared back and Ran found himself nearly eye-level with a cobra whose hood was the size of his head. It opened its mouth, and the only thing keeping venom out of Ran's eyes was the sudden instinct to cover his face by burying it in the crook of his elbow. He felt the venom splash against his arm, and the skin it touched began to burn and itch something terrible.

Ran swung his other arm out, catching the snake in the middle and shoving it away from him. While it had to take a second to rebound, Ran rolled the die and ran for it.

At first, the square is quiet. Nothing seems amiss. It’s unnerving in how safe it seems. But then, it only takes a few seconds before you understand why. It’s just taken a moment for them to get to you. The patter of tiny feet is rapidly approaching. There’s no light to see them, but there’s a reflection in their beady eyes. Rats. Thousands of them. Chittering, frothing in the mouth. These are strangely grotesque, mutated abominations. They’re running at you like they haven’t got a fear in the world–only, hungry. And rage. If they get to you, they’ll eat you alive. The ground is trembling with their weight. You’d better roll quickly if you don’t wind up a meal.

The quiet was welcome, and it gave Ran a chance to try and wipe the pain and itching off of his arm. It didn't work, quite, but the feel of the fabric of his skirt against the irritated, inflamed skin was enough of a relief for Ran to pause and catch his breath a moment. After a couple moments, though, the strangeness of the oasis of calm had nagged at Ran sufficiently for him to pause, glance around, and realise that there was something glinting out in the darkness.

There was a sound, too, with them. A small pitter pitter pitter that was swelling to a patter patter patter.

And louder.

He squinted, pausing in trying to itch his arm to instead try to figure out what the hell was approaching him at speed. But the noise had shifted, and whatever passed for a breeze was carrying the sound of chittering and squeaking to him.

Why was the ground shaking?

With a sense of foreboding, Ran took a step back and looked back down at the die in his hand. Something told him he needed to get moving. That something was the way he realised the ground shaking was increasing in strength alongside the increase in volume of the pattering and squeaking. Not to mention the way he realised what was glinting was eyes--

Ran turned the air black with what he hissed under his breath, then rolled the die and bolted again.

You’re so close! Almost at the end! But the space you’re standing on shifts and shakes and seems to crumble beneath you. You have to hold on; there’s nowhere to fall but down into the deep abyss. If you manage to hang on for long enough, you find some invisible purchase and can pull yourself back up, but it’s quite the ordeal. Make sure you don’t get cut on falling spaces! The ground restores itself once you roll again.

He had to be almost there! He had to! He was getting! Kind of tired! Of running down! A gameboard!

He had to be almost there!

He had to!

Almost as if it heard his mental prayers, Ran saw what looked like the end of the path come into view. He willed himself faster, faster, faster.

Then the ground began to shift and jump under his feet. Ran skidded to a stop to avoid losing his footing, but it did nothing for him as the ground itself just fell away. He scrabbled for a handhold to keep from falling into the ever-reaching dark beneath him, but it was nearly for naught and only a handhold made of packed earth kept him from tumbling down. His fingers already beginning to ache, Ran spent a moment gasping for breath with his face pressed against the freezing side of the hole trying to swallow him alive.

The edges of the die bit into the palm of the hand that had been holding it before he'd almost been dumped to his death. As the initial shock and certainty of death wore off, Ran found himself more and more aware of that. He looked up, trying to squint into the dark to see if it was worth trying to put the die somewhere else. But he was heartbreakingly far from the lip of the abyss.

A moment was spent thinking about this, but he couldn't afford to think for much longer than that. Very, very carefully, very slowly, he shifted the hand covering the die, adjusting to cradle it between his fingers rather than between the dirt and his palm. His feet pressed and scraped against the side of the hole, managing to find just enough purchase that Ran was able to move one hand up, toward the next precarious finger hold. He had never been a mountain climber, and he wasn't usually one much for feats of strength. To that end, his shoulders and arms were already starting to burn alongside his fingers. The arm that had gotten splashed with venom now seemed to burn inside and out, and Ran's breath hissed and whistled between his teeth as he tried to ignore the pain.

It was ignore the pain or fall in the hole.

First one hand, then the other, than the first, then the other. For one heartstopping moment, a piece he grabbed onto did not prove as solid as it had seemed, and it crumbled into jagged fragments as soon as Ran put any actual weight on it. He felt some of the fragments bite through his glove, but thanks to the glove they did little more than press against his skin. The points of the die were another matter, however, and Ran felt the bruising acute pressure on the interiors of his fingers as he tightened his grip to keep from dropping the die during hand movement.

One hand, then the other, then the first, then the other.

Until he dragged himself, shaky and sweating, far enough to have only his legs dangle into the abyss. He let the die fall to the ground in front of him, watching dispassionately as it tumbled.

The end; once you have arrived here you are free to leave. You will see be basked in the glow of a beautiful, opalescent aura that will take you back home. If you arrived with a guest, you can leave without them or choose to stay until they make it to the end as well. When you arrive back in Destiny City, you may choose to keep the six sided die–if nothing else, it’s pretty! Though, it doesn’t seem to have any magical qualities, that might be for the best.

To be honest, Ran didn't even see the result. All he knew is that, abruptly, the ground beneath him was solid again and he was shoved onto his side as his legs were all at once on the same level as the rest of him. The soft glow that washed over him was soothing, reassuring, and didn't come with the ominous quiet before the rat storm. It was enough to help him find the energy to drag himself to his knees.

Almost by reflex, Ran reached for the die, holding it in his bruised hands as he stumbled into the glow. As it washed over him, he was indescribably relieved to recognize the street ahead of him.

It was time for bed.

He'd text Viatrix later to ask about the die--
