Tristan had warned her. Casablanca knew that the little die was potentially dangerous. But the thing was, she didn't realize that was what she has found until her fingers curled around it, and she had already picked it up and started turning it over in her hands. There they were: pretty gilded numbers that made her heart lodge in her throat. Was this what had sent Tristan on her weird, wild adventure?

"s**t," she said, softly, and then, there was a powerful magical wind, and she yelped, sent flying.

There was a moment of darkness, and when she blinked awake, she was looking at a game board. It stretched out before her into the dark, and she looked down at the die in her hand.

"So we're Jumanji-ing this, huh?"

And, yes, she felt like she knew what she was getting into--but she tested anyway, walked to the edges, found glass barriers around all of them.

One way forward, she supposed.

She rolled the die.

4.

"Alright, let's go."

She jogged forward, and found that now that she'd rolled, she could go--up to the fourth square, where she stopped.

There was a smell in the air--something awful that it took her a moment tor recognize as the smell of carrots, dug out of the fridge months late. Food left abandoned. Rot.

She turned.

Something was coming for her, crawling out of the dark.

Casablanca yelped, and threw the dice again.

Another four on the die, another four spaces, and this time, Casablanca didn't walk carefully--she ran.

And when she got to the last space, she paused to catch her breath, bending over and panting heavily. Whatever was back there in the dark was gone, and the smell of rot no longer tingled at her nose, which was a relief.

But the fear lingered.

And then she heard the hissing.

And something moved over her foot.

Casablanca froze.

She wasn't, on the whole, scared of snakes. Quite the opposite--she was rather fond of them, actually. Most snakes were just trying to live their slitherly little lives, and were much more scared of the giant intruding on them than the giant was of them.

These were not ordinary snakes.

Casablanca swallowed. she wasn't sure what the best thing to do was, but she couldn't exactly stay here forever, so she curled her fingers around the die and tossed it.

There was a cascading hiss around her, and as soon as the die hit the ground, she started running, not bothering to even see what it rolled.

She felt fangs sink into her ankle as she paused to scoop up the die, and it burned, but she just kept running. Her heart raced, and she let her feet carry her forward and did her best not to think at all.

By the time she staggered to the next square, Casablanca's ankle was no longer burning, which was good. THe problem was, as soon ash she took a breath, her lungs were--and not from exertion.

From smoke.

There was a strange carnival sound in the distance, and she spun, looking for the source, but there wasn't one--just the smell of smoke and fire and people running, and once again, animal panic seized her brain. A quick toss of the dice.

Another four.

And off she went, scooping it up behind her as she ran.

    As you step into your square, something cracks. At first, you can’t tell what it is, but as your full weight moves onto the square, the ground shifts beneath you. It’s cold, and it’s ice, and a hole falls underneath you, plunging you into frigid waters. There’s enough floating ice that you should still be able to roll the dice to get out of here, but you have to go quickly–you’re soaked, in chilly water, and something just swam by your feet.


There was a crack as soon as Casablanca came to her next stop, and she made a distressed whining noise.

"Oh no no no," she said, and she started stumbling forward, but she slammed into that infernal glass wall, and her fingers fumbled the die as she tried to roll.

She threw it, just as the floor gave out from under her and sent her plunging into icy waters.

She flailed, swam up, as fast as she could, and when she broke the surface, a tiny, pathetic sob passed her lips.

She was cold and wet and miserable. But on the ice she clungto, there was the die.

Four.

Four, four, four, four all the way. Did it mean something? She wasn't sure, and she wasn't sure she cared.

Casablanca scrabbled up onto the ice, and scrambled onto the path again.

At least it was open now.

When she finally made it to the end, Casablanca collapsed to her knees. She wrapped her arms around herself, shivering; her hair was out of its updo and soaked and falling around her, and she felt chileld to the bone.

There was a soft, warm light.

And she was back on the street, and dry, and her hair was still disheveled but that was okay because she wasn't cold and wet anymore.

Accusingly, the die lay in the palm of her hand.

"Ugh, I'm keeping you," she told it, flatly. No sense in leaving it where someone else might get sucked in, obviously.

Besides, she'd won. She deserved a little trophy for her victory.
