Take On The Beast

Solo or RP Format
Counts as 5 RP growth Points
Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7

You've heard rumors of a local beast that has been causing trouble, always striking and darting away without a trace. Many have tried to capture it, but with no success. Now that fall is settling in, the community is distressed at the trouble being caused and has asked for your help in finding the beast and either relocating or finding away to get rid of it from the community.

[ A creature is terrorizing the community, but what is it and is it really such a problem? Use the fauna thread to pick out a local beast and tell us how your character found and if they remove or relocate it...or maybe even tame it as their own (not all fauna can be tamed). ]

Tale wasn't like anything he'd imagined. He knew, of course, that the rest of the world was quite unlike Zena; that the cold wasn't as oppressive, that there were different climates, creatures, and even TREES. But actually passing from the mountains into Sauti had been startling enough - Tale was even WORSE. Better?

He didn't know. He imagined Yngvara, his guide, thought he was a ridiculous child, so he'd done his best to constrain his awe, but he doubted he was as good an actor as he tried to be because she'd casually suggested they spend a day in this settlement, taking it in.

Each day he spent with the harpy made him regret picking her as his guide, even if she'd pulled through on her end of the bargain thus far.

There were certain aspects about the chill that made Wren wonder how much cold a spirit should actually feel. As one of the undead, he didn't feel a particular fondness for thicker jackets, cloaks and the like, yet his skin did feel it's bite once the sun went down. It was one of the questions that always plagued him the most, though he was loathe to talk about it with the living. They looked him at strangely as if he were speaking another language so most of the time Wren preferred to stay by himself.

Ever since he'd decided to stick around this place there were rumors of a strange beast plaguing the land. Maybe it was a shade creeper or some sort of demon. Maybe he should ask them about it! Rubbing his hands together for warmth, Wren skulked around the edges of the settlement, keen on finding his answers when he spotted something wild.

Someone else who looked like him.

The teenager crouched and skulked his way as close as he could get before taking refuge behind an old barrel. When he was nearly upon the other he slowly raised up, his fanged smile as wide as his eyes. "'Ello."

My word, but this place was a marvel. The homes seemed primitive at first glance, but on closer inspection the buildings were series of intricately wound vines, woven into the frame of the buildings as support. They were so unlike the constructs of stone and wood he was used to, and already Amon's mind spun wondrously over what inspirations he could draw.

His family focused most on trade and land acquisition but had long dabbled in other things, it wouldnt be too strange for the heir to come home from his travels with a hobby-

He was so deep in his thoughts that when a voice greeted him, he answered distractedly. "Solicitations- Bergchi's grace!!"

The visage he turned upon was some haunted spectacle of wide eyes and gleaming teeth that led him to clutch at his necklace as he nearly jumped out of his skin, staring with horror at the deranged iceling next to him.

His eyes narrowed, sweeping over the macabre creature before him, nose wrinkling despite his best attempts to stay polite. "... Hm. Well ah... I didnt expect to find another of our kind so far from home. Forgive my... surprise."

Wren's face split into a brighter grin and the macabre teenager let out a 'mirthful' cackle. He clapped his hands, jostling the tattered fabric that covered them, before placing his claws back atop the barrel and slowly pulling himself up into view. His long, stringy hair nearly covered his face before Wren pushed it over to one side in what might have been an 'alluring' gesture by someone else; from him it was undoubtedly unsettling.

"No wawries 'ere; I'm as surprised 'o see you as you are 'o see me." Another spirit walker! And this one was...well, glowing. From his finery to the way he walked he might have blended in with any of the soul touched if it weren't for his skin. It was the same blue, if not a little brighter, as Wren's which meant he was one of the damned and his eyes had that same ghoulish glow.

How exciting!

"You've never bin 'ere befawe," Wren pulled himself up onto the barrel and sat down. "I would 'ave remembered if you 'ad."

Amon's eyes widened a margin as the... thing... began to talk in earnest, reveal more of its horrifying maw. He looked absolutely filthy, and-- was that a noose around his neck? Amon struggled to stay in place, half convinced the man would launch onto him and rip his throat out with his teeth if he so much as moved the wrong way. Yet - he slowly tilted his head, staring as he prattled on, half struggling to follow his chatter.

"... Indeed." Amon responded, lip slightly curling. Was he really here, conversing with this... creature?

He cast his eyes about, hoping he might spot Yngvara, even if she was unlikely to aid him in his current plight. "I am traveling through. I shan't be long in this... quaint village." Quaint, if interesting. The people here were all common, and from what he understood there weren't lords here, at least not in the sense there were back home. How... odd.

"Oh no no no! You should stay!" He grasped the edges of the barrel and leaned forward. Were it not for whatever vegetable was pickling inside it might have tipped over with his weight, or lack there of, really. The hollows of Wren's cheeks were visibly, though not distressingly so; just enough to add to his 'aesthetic'.

"There's a monster 'ere. It'll 'ake you wi'h i' an' gobble you whole if you aren'' careful." What would that be like? To take a spirit back to the underworld? If it hadn't taken Wren yet then maybe it was waiting around to nab this one instead! "Unless you're 'he one i''s 'ere faw..." He widened his eyes as he spoke, his voice dropping an octave with 'awe'.

Uh. Amon leaned back further as the man leaned in closer, his hand raising to settle over his necklace, as if afraid the gremlin would snatch it at the first opportunity. His fears seemed almost confirmed, however, as his... companion began to insist he 'stay'.

"If there's a monster, all the more reason not to tarry." Amon said, quickly, giving himself a shake. "This is a joke to you, isn't it? You are - trying to play a joke. Is this how you small town folk entertain yourselves?"

The sad reality of it was that if Amon hadn't made repeated motions toward his necklace Wren may have dismissed it all together. He'd assumed it was part of his visage at first, a careful accessory to the illusion of 'life', but now he was curious. "Wha's tha'? A pendan'?" Maybe it was what the monster actually wanted? He didn't really know if it preferred spiritual energy or an item; the locals hadn't said as much. Anytime they saw him they got away fast so he never had the chance.

Wren sat back a little and pinched his features. "Well...no. I wouldn' joke abou' 'his." He lifted one long, clawed finger to point at Amon. "Some'hin's 'ere an' it likes things like us. I wouldn' be walkin around on your own. I'm jus' tryin' to warn you bu' -" Wren shrugged his shoulders.

Amon's eyes snapped to the other boy when he pointed out his necklace, making a face at him that, funnily enough, almost matched the concerned look Wren had taken up. The nobleman recoiled at the point of a claw, eyes flicking down to it then back up to his face. "Things like us." he repeated, flatly, unimpressed.

"Well. Have you even seen this creature?" He shot back, perhaps a bit nastily. "What does this thing look like? So I can have my bodyguard keep an eye out for it." Yngvara would probably die of laughter if she heard him refer to her as such - she was a glorified 'guide', if nothing else.

Was he not happy to be a spirit? It didn't look much like he cared for it too much, and maybe that's why he kept touching his necklace. If it was an artifact from a past life then Wren thought he should just get rid of it, but saying as much would be rude. Death hit everyone differently so he needed to be understanding.

Poor, wretched thing.

"No, I haven't." Wren was a little taken aback by the tonal shift. "I've jus' 'eard abou' it from the villagers. They say i's some kind ov'a ghoul tha's bin skulkin around. Mus' be pre'y bad if they're tha' scared."

Ohhh, if Amon knew this creature pitied HIM he would have laughed, openly, in his face. As it was, the nobleman stood a bit taller, giving the ghastly boy infront of him a long, intensive once over. The part of him that remembered his old maid Oona (who said to always be kind to those less fortunate) cringed at his behavior, but the part that wanted Geir's approval felt disgusted to be spoken to so casually by this rough looking boy.

"Have you stopped to think, my sharp-toothed friend... that the villagers may be talking about you?"

"I'm your friend?" Wren's smile picked back up and he felt his posture lighten. This really was something! He didn't get to meet others of his own kind often, much less those that were being hunted by monsters, and now he had a friend. Didn't have many of those either; none, actually. Wren was ready to give the other spirit a helping hand when his question caught him off guard.

Bit by bit Wren's expression drifted from a naive excitement into concerned confusion. "I don' see why they would. I've been good." His voice faded into a murmur, his posture sinking as he thought about it. Were they really worried about him? "I'm no' a beas' an' I ain' a ghoul...Jus' ol' me."

(6/7)

What an... unfortunate choice of words. The boy beamed at him, flashing even more of those sharp, terrifying teeth, and Amon felt more and more sure of his deduction. Still, he didn't want to purposefully rip into the other man, after all he'd been... shockingly civil thus far, but that could end if he pushed him too far into annoyance.

He wasn't as ... secure as he was, back home, to hurl insults and cruel words and expect someone to keep him in one piece.

"... Hmph." Was his only answer to the hopeful question, and Amon crossed his arms, stepping back again. "You've been... good. And what does being good mea--" Before he could fully ask his question, a noise from the edge of the village made him freeze, gold eyes going wide with a shock of fear.

Was it- was it the ghoul?

He'd been good, yea, 'bout as good as anyone was. Did that mean that he had to be hunted down? Maybe this was a really spiritual village and they wanted to push out anything that didn't match with their auras-?

The noise caught Wren's attention as well, but instead of freezing he whipped around toward it. Spindly arms pushed off the sides of the barrel, thrusting Wren onto the ground and he reached down to snatch up an odd little creature. "'ere's your ghouly!" Wren was positively beaming when he turned around. Held at arms length, kicking and screeching, was an livid poscuta. The creature's fur was a sickly sort of grey that looked almost the same as a bloated rat and even though it was a perfectly healthy weight Wren could see how others might think it was nasty. Especially given the kinfa skull that was stuck on it's fat head. Every time it screeched and tossed around the skull bounced, eliciting a goofy laugh out of him.

"'ang on chuffy, I go' ya." Setting the poscuta down atop the barrel, Wren grasped the edges of the skull, wriggled it a bit and pulled it off. Once the creature was free it wasted no time in hissing at the both of them before darting off.
