Regularly Scheduled Programming (3) : With Halloween just around the corner, television stations are constantly playing various spooky themed movies and episodes of your favorite shows. When you sit down to watch something in particular, the screen goes static. You try to change the channel but every one of them is static. If you continue to watch (or attempt to fix the television), an eerie voice comes across the speakers begging for help and that they're coming. No matter what you do or say, they only repeat the same phrases. When you turn off the television and turn it back on again, everything has turned to its regularly scheduled programming..

Cold weather didn’t bother her much. The temperatures had to drop pretty drastically for Kyrie to really flinch or shiver. Plants here, though, weren’t quite so accepting of frosts and chilly winds. Understandable—they just weren’t built for it. While she could keep her collection of plants comfy and happy in her van, there were a variety in various outdoor locations she’d have to wait till spring to work with again.

Kyrie donned a somewhat thick sweater to offset the shorter skirt and bared legs, mindful of how just going around in… short shirt and tank top when it got cold out wasn’t perceived as ideal by some more vocal members of society around here… Usually older, she found. Which was just weird, but old people being nit-picky maybe was just a universal trait.

Days like this, when the sun was out but clouds peppered the sky and brisk winds chased leaves around the streets, Kyrie figured visiting gardening stores and florists would be a good use of her time. Figure out what was in season for this time of year, or what methods people used to prolong their growing and flowering seasons.

Entering into one store, she shut the door behind her with a bit of difficulty, the wind pressing hard against her efforts. But inside was warm and perfumed with the scents of so many flowers and fresh soil that it was worth the little contest. Behind the counter with one of the assistant florists, a TV played a black and white silent film for the spooky holiday.

Waving to the young woman, Kyrie began to poke around, taking out a sketchbook from her satchel to sketch some of the blooms she hadn’t seen before, leaving plenty of notes to ask for names once she could. There were already a few people up at the counter, no need to bother the folks working here now…

Some time earlier Amaranth had arrived, dutifully driven to the shop by Domcallion to deliver some flower cuts. The old black hearse, long since retired from its prior ceremonial use, was much more convenient for these large deliveries than her own little VW Bug!

She was shuffling in with the last of the boxes now, setting them before the attendant at the counter who took the boxes and went to print out the invoice receipt. For Amaranth, it felt so rewarding that in just two years she had the greenhouse up and running so well that now she could sell off the overstock of flowers. There had been some hiccups here and there, but nothing that set her back too badly, and she was glad to begin paying off the investment Dom had made when building the greenhouse and hiring an in-house florist. Moreover, she was getting to pretty much live her flower-fairy dreams. Sure, she was curating arrangements for dead people, but the dead and the grieving rarely complained. At least she wasn't having to bend to the demands of bridezillas. She'd leave that to the folks here.

At first as she waited she looked up at the TV, but it didn't hold her attention for long. Now, being a somewhat very vertically-challenged person herself, Amaranth was not one to over-look one of her fellow pixies. So she walked over to the person she saw with the sketchbook.

"Hello~"

Kyrie glanced up when she heard the sound of footsteps approaching, unsure if she was going to be in someone's way to get past her, or if she was blocking some of the flowers they wanted to look at. The young woman greeted her, though, and Kyrie recognized her as one of the people she'd seen up at the counter. "Hiya. Ah--I'm not in your way, am I?" Straightening, she closed up her sketchbook, unsure if she'd need to relocate.

She'd been the person bringing in some boxes, hadn't she? Not someone who knew the ins and outs of running a florist boutique, she wasn't sure how typical that was. Curiosity blunt as it was, Kyrie asked, "Were you... bringing stuff in before? Do you work here?" If so, she'd be able to ask some of her questions... assuming she had any time, and wasn't dealing with customers, or other duties.

Up at the counter, the TV continued to play its spooky black and white cinematic. A phone rang, a clerk answered and began to take information for an order. A garble from the TV, it began to fuzzle and fade, as if it were losing the signal. Going into static instead. The clerk frowned, trying to hit some of the buttons on the remote to fiddle with the channel. More static began to settle in even as the channels flickered past.

"Oh! No - you're not in my way at all!" Amaranth assured with a smile, "I didn't mean to interrupt what you were doing."

She should have thought about that though. Ugh, of course. She knew how working with someone over your shoulder could be, and the privacy some artists treasured while working. Although her mediums were different, sometimes an unfinished work could be embarrassing if not finessed in to an 'show-off-appropriate' level of work in progress.

"Oh, I don't work here - I'm an in-house florist for Amnesis Funeral Home, but we also grow our own flowers. Most florists don't, and rely on outside sources for their stock, so I sell them some of my surplus," She explained as if this wasn't the first time she'd done so.

Honestly, she didn't get tired of it. Amaranth was proud of her work. Add to that her mori-girl cottage core style, and Amaranth was perhaps the happiest she had ever been with her life. She smiled, folding her arms behind her and rocking back on her heels for a moment, and gave a soft, warm hum of amusement.

"I'm pretty lucky - I get to live my fairy-princess dreams!"

Okay, so there was maybe one or two things she still had to work out before her life would be, as far as she was concerned, perfect but she already planned to have all that worked out before Chr-

Amaranth hadn't noticed what was going on from the TV until she thought she heard something through the static that made her turn around and look at the flickering images. She tried to shrug it off, assuming it was just something from one of the many spooky shows that the glitching TV was flipping through. Still, she could feel the goosebumps from it. Spoooky. Although one would think she'd be a bit harder to spook, living with a funeral home with a freezer full of dead people practically in her front yard.

It occurred to Kyrie that the other woman might have just been curious about what she was drawing, which made a corner of her lips twitch upwards. That part of her hobbies, though, she'd rather share after her burning questions for another. Her eyes all but lit up hearing she grew the flowers she'd delivered.

They'd been fresh. So, she knew how to grow things in these sorts of weather conditions for this area on Earth. Which was exactly what Kyrie wanted. The funeral home part made her lift a brow, but she didn't say anything--she wasn't familiar with death customs on Earth, but she knew many Solarian customs treated them as celebrations of the person's life. The inclusion of flora in their customs differed, but many had utilized cremation and returning the ashes to help important flora and fungi grow... While she didn't expect Earth to do similar, having bright, beautiful flowers around during a difficult, sorrowful time just made sense to her.

That the young woman got to work with plants all the time did sound like a wonderful dream, and she grinned. "That's awesome! I'm glad that's worked out for you, more people should be living their dreams. Especially ones that involve bringing more flowers into the world. Do you mind if I ask how you grow them? I'm trying to figure out if there's anything I can do for my plants, and some plans I was working on... but the cold's kinda shelved those plans," she explained, glancing ruefully towards one of the windows and the nippy air beyond.

"This stupid thing, it was working just fine earlier," the clerk began to grumble, drawing Kyrie's gaze to the buzzing TV. More flickering channels, all static. The clerk hit the top of the TV, but it didn't do anything but jostle the set.

About to turn back to the conversation, Kyrie paused. "....-elp ...... me. ..... -ming, wat- ..... Please se-- .... help me. ....They're coming, watch ou-- .... Please send aid, hel--"

A voice broke through the static. Gargled words at first, they became clearer and clearer with each repeat of the same phrases over and over. Her brow furrowed as she stared at the static. What sort of transmission was that..?
