Quote: The Noises (9) : There’s a noise somewhere around you and you don’t know where it’s coming from, or what it is. Maybe it’s the sound of something otherwise normal–glasses clinking, someone walking, a clock chiming–except, it doesn’t belong there. It’s a common noise, it just has no source. Or, maybe it’s something scarier–a whisper, a scratch, and wail. The noises come and go without any apparent source. It’s constant. For minutes, or hours, or days. And then, it stops, with no explanation, and that’s almost as scary as when it started. Sundays were one of the few days she walked away from her work of all sorts to try and take some time to herself to breathe. Whittling seemed like an appropriate way to pass the time, an activity she could do in the relative silence of a cafe, with a small bowl underneath her hands to capture any scraps she produced. Shikora wasn't exactly sure what she was making at the moment, but it didn't matter. It was something. And it wasn't a reflection of the chaos of the city, or the mournful stories she confronted every day, or the words of the people who came into her office, nor was it a starseed, nor was it a monster, nor was it a senshi with hair that seemed impossibly long-- Maybe it would be a dog. A brief noise interrupted her trance and it hit her as wrong. Shikora's eyes lifted. Where was that noise coming from? She sighed and excused it, going back to work.

Haruhi loved this season. The leaves changing colors, the pumpkin-flavored everything, and all of the goofy Halloween movies ne could binge without being a weirdo for watching them out of season. Ne shivered as ne walked into the cafe, pulling nis sweater closer to nis body as if that would help as the change in temperature registered, and sighed happily as the warmth suffused nem. Ne ordered a pumpkin spice latte and went to sit down— But then ne heard an odd sound. Ne looked around and noticed only one other person had noticed it—well, either that meant they were both crazy, or it was something only certain kinds of people could hear. Ne doubted it had anything to do with their apparent shared hobby of whittling. Getting nis order, ne sidled over to the table with the whittler, and nodded to them. "You hear it too?" ne asked in a low voice. "Can't quite make out what it is... But it's definitely not your knife on the wood."

Shikora was at least attempting to ignore that incongruent noise. Was it working? That in itself was questionable. She kept glancing up on occasion, her brows furrowing as she found herself focusing on something other than the mystery sculpture that had not shared its identity yet. (Awful rude of it, really, perhaps it would provide a distraction.) One of the times she glanced up, she noticed someone approaching. Cute. "I do. Glad I'm not the only one." She set down her piece of unidentified wood and her knife, adding with an uncertain giggle, "And now I've set it down, so it's definitely not the knife against the wood. A much more pleasant sound, anyway." What this was? She didn't know, exactly, but it didn't make sense and felt like the static of a malfunctioning PA system from her grammar school days... "Doesn't sound like it's pitched too high for anyone else to hear..."

Haruhi nodded again, shifting and deciding to sit down across from nis new acquaintance. "I wonder what the source is," ne said, brow furrowed. "At least it doesn't sound like anything or anyone is in trouble. As spooky as it is." Ne snorted. "Maybe it's some teenager trying to play a Halloween prank. But, uh. You carve?" ne asked, gesturing to the knife and the bowl and the carving. As if the answer to nis question wasn't blatantly obvious by the tools. "Me too. Big stuff and little stuff like that. Did you take classes nearby?"

Shikora nodded as ne sat down, acknowledging and not telling nem to leave. They had a similar experience that it didn't seem like anyone else in this whole cafe did. Certainly odd. Certainly worth exploring. "Probably more of those weird holiday things," she murmured, in part under her breath, not certain if ne knew that was really a thing and not wanting to spook nem. "You're probably right though," was added, a bit louder, "kids love to do pranks like that this time of year. Wholly unnecessary really." Where was it coming from, though? She briefly patted under her seat. Didn't feel like anything had been attached-- "Oh, I do!" Did someone else carve? Maybe that was enough to get her mind off the noise for now. "Been doing so for years. It used to be an idle activity of mine to try and make interesting shapes with rocks and other rocks, and this felt like a natural extension of that once my parents let me have a carving knife." Her chuckle was fond. Wistful. "But I moved here a few years back, so I haven't taken classes near here. Have you?" Shikora tilted her head. "Is there a good carving community here?"

Haruhi nodded at the question, smiling slightly. "Yeah, I only got into it a few years ago, when I was old enough to buy my own tools," ne said with a bit of a chuckle. Ne went to expand upon the question of community. "There's a few classes run by really nice people, and a whole shop we all pitched in for stuff together on. It's unofficial, so if the person who owns the lot, like... becomes a huge jackass for no reason, that'll be bad, but I don't think that will happen. We basically pay a monthly ten dollar fee to help keep the lights on and we can use it almost any time. Still gotta close and make sure only a few people have a key in case of crime, y'know." Ne waved his hand a bit, pretty sure ne didn't need to explain that in full, at least.

If ne was only old enough now to buy nis own tools, she had to wonder how old ne was. Adorable, no matter what that answer was. She giggled at becomes a huge jackass, her eyes dancing as she replied, "That would be a problem, but it sounds like you have a pretty friendly arrangement. I love the idea of having a whole group that comes together just to carve and teach other people to whittle, honestly." Shikora had missed a lot of things when she moved across the country in pursuit of helping the people in this area she now acknowledged as potentially traumatized, and potentially war-torn. A proper community was one of them, but it wasn't something she needed. She leaned in a bit closer. Shikora would offer to make sure the little studio stayed safe, but she didn't know the alignment of the person she spoke to, so instead, she offered, "If you ever need another member..." Close enough.

Haruhi just smiled. "Wouldn't be talking about it if I wasn't going to invite you," ne said, pulling out some paper from nis bag and scribbling the address on it. "There's pretty much always someone hanging around from about nine in the morning to eight at night. We're all over the clock when it comes to hours and days. If they ask you, just tell 'em Haruhi sent ya."
