There had been such interesting things going on lately, and Tristan had been enjoying her time out on patrol. It was a good break from her studying and the essays that were always due. Why did college think it was okay to just make everything an essay? Was that really necessary? There were only so many ways you could rewrite your thoughts before they all started to sound…really stupid.

But, getting out was always helpful, and getting her own energy made her feel as though she were doing something worthwhile to pay back the Negaverse for putting her through school…it was her job but…it wasn’t a bad one…and besides. When she graduated, she would be able to assist in so many other ways too.

The glint of something shiny on the ground gave the corrupt a moment of pause and she reached down, picking up the small cube.

“Oh! A die! Are we going to play a game then?” She laughed, though the sound soon died as…well.

It looked like yes.

…She was going to play a game indeed.

Space 2:
Something pale and ghostly slams into your back; you don’t see it, but it feels like it’s trying to push you forward–or to the side, or off the path. Thankfully, the magical glass walls stop you from going too far, but this is jarring–and might hurt.

Her first roll was a two…and given how long this game board seemed to be, Tristan was a little annoyed by the fact that she rolled such a low number, but slowly she crossed the spaces, pausing when she reached the second one. She was about to roll the die again, to see where she would end up this time when something hard slammed into her from behind, causing the corrupt to let out a cry of pain that was heard by absolutely nobody.

The die fell from her hand though and she supposed it counted as a roll.

Hopefully the next space wouldn't be quite so painful.

Space 8:
Something slithers across your foot, so fast that you might have thought you imagined it. Except, a few seconds later, it happens again. And then, again. Snakes keep moving across your space. If you move, they see you–and they might bite. Some of them hiss, some are capable of spraying a poisonous liquid that can cause itchiness or burning.

When the first…something moved over her foot, Tristan simply pretended as though it were only her imagination…however when the second, third and fourth slithered over her feet, she swallowed and looked down, letting out a squeak of fear. There were snakes. Sure she wasn’t being pushed by a giant invisible whatever but…there were snakes...and they sounded angry.

Swiftly, she fumbled for her die and tossed it, hopping from one foot to another before she could leave the space and hopefully find safety.

Or at the very least, a place to rest for a moment.

Space 9:
The smell of saltwater fills the air, and you can hear the water lapping against the shore. You hear boards creaking, and bells in the distance. And then, a song. Haunting. Ghostly, and calling you. For a second, you fall in love. And then, water fills your lungs. You’re choking, you can’t breathe. The song is loud and seems to caress you, even as a wet chill gathers in your square. Scaly hands reach for you, you gently caressing, and try to lure you into an endless sleep.

Tristan was so pleased to be out of the snake pit that she really didn’t see anything wrong with this next square, it smelled nice and it sounded nice and…oh, there was a beautiful song too…

But then she couldn't breathe.

She was drowning and while the corrupt tried to keep her mouth closed, tried to cough to push the water out, the drowning feeling continued as the song grew louder.

When she felt the strange, clammy scaled hand touch her though, she threw the die with all of the strength she had, utterly terrified.

Death by drowning was not how she wanted to exit this world thank you very much.

Space 15:
Bats. Maybe you missed them attacking earlier, but they’re back again, and angrier than ever. Instead of just screeching or scratching, they’re swooping down and biting now–and the effects are instantaneous. The little teeth are sharp and painful, but once bitten you might feel agitated and prone to violence, and you might feel perpetually cold and hungry with no relief in sight. The effects might last when you leave the square–or they might linger for a few hours or days after you get out of here.

This was not the relaxing game that she had envisaged, and Tristan struggled to the next square with some difficulty, but she had no time to actually get her breath back or rest as she was suddenly attacked by bats. First snakes. Now Bats. With some ghosts and drowning in between. Or...whatever.

As the angry creatures swooped for her, Tristan ducked, keeping one hand over her head as she fumbled to roll the die once more, hoping to get away without…

Well. One of them sank its little teeth into her arm and she yelled loudly in pain, and then swiftly left the square, needing to get away.

Space 17:
Something howls in the distance. It’s loud and echoes with such ferocity it seems to shake you. On the other side of you–another howl. Closer. This one is loud enough to hurt your ears. The ground trembles with the force of something charging at you. A growl, a snarl. Yellow eyes staring you down. There’s not just one monster out there–there’s several, and they’re all coming for you.

For a moment, Tristan was simply glad that she had gotten away from the bats who had decided she would be a good feast for the day, but…when she heart the howl, all of the hairs stood up on the back of her neck, and she swallowed hard before glancing behind her, her knees going weak at the sight of the yellow, almost glowing eyes.

Oh. Okay. This stupid ‘fun’ game was undoubtedly going to end with her dead, and she was just sorry that she hadn’t done more with her life but…

As another howl broke through what should have been a peaceful silence, Tristan managed to fumble the small die in her hand and fled to the next square.

Space 19:
You’re so close! Almost at the end! But the space you’re standing on shifts and shakes and seems to crumble beneath you. You have to hold on; there’s nowhere to fall but down into the deep abyss. If you manage to hang on for long enough, you find some invisible purchase and can pull yourself back up, but it’s quite the ordeal. Make sure you don’t get cut on falling spaces! The ground restores itself once you roll again.

One away. Tristan was just one away from the end, and thus far this square didn’t have anything wet, anything loud, or anything biting or chasing her, and she took a moment to draw in a breath and let out a sigh…or…she would have if the ground hadn’t started to just…vanish from under her.

“Oh my god, you’ve got to be kidding me!” She tossed the die away from her, reaching and scrambling, trying to just not fall into the absolute nothingness…and finally…

She managed.

Space 20:
The end; once you have arrived here you are free to leave. You will see be basked in the glow of a beautiful, opalescent aura that will take you back home. If you arrived with a guest, you can leave without them or choose to stay until they make it to the end as well. When you arrive back in Destiny City, you may choose to keep the six sided die–if nothing else, it’s pretty! Though, it doesn’t seem to have any magical qualities, that might be for the best.

When Tristan saw the glow in front of her, there was an overwhelming sense of relief, and when she saw the actual city around her once again, she sank weakly to the ground, drawing in a deep, shaking breath.

Her eyes fell on the die and for a moment, she could do nothing more than glare weakly at it...it was the cause of all of this...chaos. And not even the good kind of chaos. This...

That was nothing like a break in her studying...but.

It was over now, and she could go home.
