With how strange things had been lately, Retzian was half amused and half resigned to the fact that she seemed to be in a giant game board of some kind after picking up what had looked to be something valuable…maybe something that would have belonged to one of her students but…

No. It was something that was cursed or…or something. Honestly? With how things had been going this week…she wasn’t really surprised. From spider bites to strange laughter. And lets not forget the being chased by shadow dogs or whatever the Hell that had been…honestly?

She was ready for Halloween to be over, since that was the only thing that made any kind of sense…even as it made no sense at all.

With a sigh she tossed the die into the air and waited to see where it landed.

If playing was going to be the only way she could get out…

It was best to start now, she supposed.

Space 5:
A dog barks, fierce and frightening. You can hear its growl and the hackles stand up on the back of your neck. You can practically feel spittle on you. It’s close. And it’s big. And it’s angry. If this beastly dog could reach you, no doubt it would try to tear you to shreds.

The good part about all of this was there didn’t seem to be too many spaces on the board, and when Retzian rolled a five, she happily moved forward the five spaces and gave a little sigh, glancing ahead of her, trying to figure out if perhaps the game could be rigged…if she could just…set the die down on the number six each time…then she could finish and be done with all of this and go about her life pretending that it had never happened in the first place but…

The sound of the dog barking had the Lieutenant jumping half a food into the air, and she yelped, looking around with fear widened wyes but…there wasn’t any dog in sight but…she could feel it…and…

Damn she didn’t want to feel it!

All plans of cheating out of her mind, Retzian tossed the die into the air and got ready to run.

Space 9:
The smell of saltwater fills the air, and you can hear the water lapping against the shore. You hear boards creaking, and bells in the distance. And then, a song. Haunting. Ghostly, and calling you. For a second, you fall in love. And then, water fills your lungs. You’re choking, you can’t breathe. The song is loud and seems to caress you, even as a wet chill gathers in your square. Scaly hands reach for you, you gently caressing, and try to lure you into an endless sleep.

When Retzian moved, thankfully the dogs didn’t move with her, and for a moment she shuddered, sinking to her knees as she tried to slow her thumping heart. It wasn’t slowing quickly but…

Pausing, the Lieutenant glanced up, sniffing the air. It smelled…lovely. And the smell as well as the sound made her chest ache in a completely different way, when there was a strange song, she felt her heart utterly break, break and fill with a longing that was almost too much to bear.

For a moment, Retzian couldn’t quite breathe, couldn’t quite think, and when she felt the scaly hand on her cheek, the sound that came from her was very nearly a sob. It felt so nice, so familiar...or…she wanted it to feel familiar…it…

She couldn't breathe. Water was everywhere. She was drowning…she…

…This was okay though, right? It was worth it…worth it to be here with…with whoever this was…

Retzian could just drift. Just drift and cease to be she…but she wanted to see her. Wanted to see who this was…wanted to see…

Her lungs felt as though they were burning, but she forced her eyes open and to her horror and deepest grief…nobody was there.

Nobody but a stretch of game board…game…

Drawing the last of her strength, Retzian flung the die into the air, and drew in a great breath when it landed.

Space 11:
You hear a frantic flapping above you, but that’s all the warning you get before a hoard of bats descend. They scratch and slap and screech, but you avoid getting bitten. For now. You’ve invaded their space and they seem keen to defend it. You can try to fight them, but the only way to escape them is to roll again.

It was strangely bittersweet to breathe. The tears that pricked the corners of Retzian’s eyes weren’t completely due to the fact she had nearly drowned…it was also due to the fact that she had felt so at peace almost drowning…

And she had wanted it.

Terribly. To be with whoever that was. To let the water take her to…

The sound of flapping broke her out of her thoughts and Retzian looked up, unwilling to really do so, not wanting to know what was up there…and when she saw it was bats...when they began to dive bomb her. To attack her, she let out a cry of fear and heartbreak, tossing the die once more and scrambling to follow where it led.

Space 16:
As you step into your square, something cracks. At first, you can’t tell what it is, but as your full weight moves onto the square, the ground shifts beneath you. It’s cold, and it’s ice, and a hole falls underneath you, plunging you into frigid waters. There’s enough floating ice that you should still be able to roll the dice to get out of here, but you have to go quickly–you’re soaked, in chilly water, and something just swam by your feet.

Okay…this was getting stupid, and Retzian just wanted to be out of this, and honestly? She was going to lock herself in her apartment and not go anywhere but work until after this month was over. She wasn’t good enough for a promotion so why should she even bother putting herself out into situations like…

The cracking sound made her pause, and drawing in a shallow, shuddering breath, she looked down and saw that the board…the whatever this was was cracking and then…

Then she was in water again and it was cold this time.

Well. She hadn’t drowned the last time that she had tried to so obviously she wouldn’t now but…

To tell the truth, if that hand came to stroke her cheek she might think about it…

It wasn’t a hand against her cheek that she felt this time, however, it was some kind of a…a something against her bare ankle and that…

That was a big nope.

She threw the die and scrambled out of the water as quickly as she could…hopefully, this would be it. She thought it was enough to reach the end, at least.

Space 20:
The end; once you have arrived here you are free to leave. You will see be basked in the glow of a beautiful, opalescent aura that will take you back home. If you arrived with a guest, you can leave without them or choose to stay until they make it to the end as well. When you arrive back in Destiny City, you may choose to keep the six sided die–if nothing else, it’s pretty! Though, it doesn’t seem to have any magical qualities, that might be for the best.

Thankfully, the last roll was enough to get her to the end, at least…Retzian hoped that the glowing aura was the end of this twisted game and not…well. Not the entrance to the great beyond. She…hadn’t died.

Not yet anyway…and though perhaps she wanted to…that was…

That was for the future Retzain to deal with, right now, she walked through the aura and out of this twisted game board, her hand clenched around the die…it was pretty and to her way of thinking…

She had earned it.

Lord, what she wouldn’t have given to be an English teacher. The stories she could have had her students write for this one would have been absolute gold.

Ah well.
