6 - 10: Mudslide It has been a dry few weeks, and many were excited about the rains coming in. But alas, it seems that too much rain has caused a mudslide. The damage isn't bad, but there might be a few people missing that need to be tracked down.

Torsten wrinkled his nose as he walked along his patrol route. There had been a strangely heavy rain recently, so now the ground was sticky and mucky. His boots lifted with a suction sound, and slapped back down wetly. While he didn't mind his uniform getting mussed up from any legitimate work, he was loath to get mud all over himself simply from a patrol; especially when it was still early in his shift!

He stopped short when he heard a rumbling in the air, brow cocking curiously as he looked around. What the heck was that noise?

The shouting started soon after, and he ran for the source. After all, he was a guard! It was his job to run toward the trouble!

Charging uphill, he skid to a halt when he saw a wall of earth sliding down along the street. It wasn't huge, but it was enough to sweep away everything in it's path. "Mudslide!" he shouted at the top of his lungs in warning. He spun and ran to find something to grab onto. His job was watching over the city, but he couldn't do that if he was swept to the other side of town!

Alinta was in street clothing, dressed for a morning run like usual. The hybrid noblewoman was prone to focusing on her physical training more than etiquette and even though she could hold her own at a social gathering the teen felt quite more at ease whenever it came to punching things. She adored her adopted family and was thankful that her mother had found her so many years ago but since other events had surrounded their childhood, her nephews especially, Alinta had decided she would work hard to be their guard of sorts. Even if a certain nephew made her easily annoyed and was determined to drive her insane, Alinta was set upon her path to act as a protector and guide since she was after all technically their aunt. So she worked hard to sneak away in the early hours of the morning to get in some physical training before sitting down to listen to lessons from their hired instructor, the girl having to endure hours with the boys as they drudged through homework together. If Qaisan wasn't such a nuisance about things then perhaps Alinta would be less inclined to act like a proper student herself, but for the most part she simply went along with the lessons and made certain that there was no trickery whenever their instructors turned away.

It also helped that her physical prowess could turn away potential suitors. Not that Alinta expected many since she was the oddball in a family that had heirs. If anything it would be the boys that would have to deal with that in the future while she hoped to get away from any situations that involved marriage. The very thought made her nose crinkle as she turned a corner, fully prepared to go down her usual route back to the manor after spending some time training. It seemed that On'os was not exactly on her side today though as the skies decided to open up into a torrential downpour which turned her back towards home, the girl running as hard as she could since she truly did not enjoy getting caught out in such a mess, but the very next thing Alinta knew there were screams of a mudslide. Not only was she suffering in her soaked clothing, but now there was a disaster happening?! So much for making it to lessons on time today. She had hoped to take Faisal's training area at the manor for some lessons during the bad weather but now it seemed she would be lucky enough if she made it home on time.

She had just climbed onto an upper walkway when she heard the yell again and this time Alinta spotted a young man dressed in soldier attire. Someone from the Oban army? It would be very unfitting if she simply walked past, especially considering her family's connections to the military. A soft sigh of exasperation left her lips before she reached down to offer a hand. "Up here!" She called out as she prepared to tug the soldier onto the upper pathway next to her. If the debris filled the street below then they could be safe up here and see what damage had been done when things settled.

The voice that called out was almost outmatched by the ruckus of the mud. Torsten veered to the side the voice had come from and reached out his hand without question. He had never dealt with a mudslide directly before, but he knew about the problems it could cause. He certainly didn't want to become a casualty of the mud for the sake of experience.

He used the assistance to leverage himself up onto the walkway and exhaled with relief. His gaze swept out along the flowing mud before rising to his rescuer. "Tha-"

....Oh.

He needed a moment to clear the stars from his eyes before he could speak. "Thanks for the help. Guess it would be dumb of me to ask, but a guy's got standards; are you okay?"

At least she had managed to help someone. Alinta waited until the soldier was settled on the walkway next to her before moving back towards the edge again to look at the damage. Ooof. It was definitely a mess below now that the mud was slowing down, the strange sight of dirt spread throughout the lower streets definitely unsettling. Alinta could already see a few structures that were broken by the brute force of the mudslide while the sturdier stone buildings seemed to be alright save for the muck that blocked some of the doorways and dirtied the outer walls.

The voice brought her attention back to the solider and a chuckle actually escaped Alinta's lips. "Standards, huh?" She replied with a small smile, the usually uppity girl more relaxed considering the situation. Her nephews weren't around and she didn't recognize this guy as anyone her family would deal with so why bother putting on airs in the moment? "I'm fine, just mostly distressed by the damage below, but I do appreciate your concern. Are you alright yourself?" Alinta gave a polite bow before glancing back to the mess below. "I never would have expected a mudslide in the city like this. I just hope no one is trapped down there..."

Torsten nodded heavily. "Yeah, it looks pretty bad out there. ..At least the view up here is nice." Well, a liiittle flirting would be okay, right? He cleared his throat and pushed himself up to stand. "Yeah, I'm good. Would be less good if you hadn't gotten me up here." He joined Alinta at the edge of the walkway to survey the damage. "It looked like most of the people got indoors. Once the mud calms down a little more, I'll start looking for civilians that might need assistance." Torsten sighed and smoothed his hand over his hair. "This is going to take a long time to get through and clear out. Is your home close?"

"Depending on where you look, I suppose." Replied Alinta with a slight shrug of her shoulders, her gaze narrowing as she looked at the damaged street below. The hybrid was no nonsense in the moment, the flirting completely passing her notice whether intentional or not, and she found herself eventually looking towards the soldier once she verified that no one was screaming for help in the moment. Mostly houses with damages...hopefully no civilians.

"My home isn't here." Replied Alinta after some hesitation, the noble reluctant to reveal more about herself than necessary to some stranger. After everything that had happened with the family in the past she couldn't help but to be wary of others. Even if he had no ill intentions it was always a hassle whenever someone learned her family's name because then all attitudes changed towards her which Alinta despised. "Yours?" Shifting she walked towards the edge of the walkway, her body twisting over the small half wall that blocked them from the street below. "Should we start searching to make certain no one is stuck? I don't mind helping if there's need."

Was.. that an insult? Torsten blinked with confusion before snorting, deciding that there was no insult intended. "Touché." This woman was apparently the serious type. Whether or not she was enjoying her view, he was more than content to keep appreciating the view he had.

"No. Other end of town. I'm just doing patrols over here today." He looked down at his uniform with a sigh. As logical as it was to run from a mudslide, he couldn't see any way to make running from mud look any sort of cool. At least his uniform was mostly clean.

Of course, that was about to change quickly now that the mud was settling down. It would be time to get back to work and see if anyone needed help. "Yeah. I'm hoping there are no casualties.. but that came pretty sudden. It's likely someone got surprised by it and weren't as lucky as us." He shimmied over to the edge and dropped down into mud that reached mid-calf on him. He looked back up and held a hand up in offering if Alinta wanted to accept it. "Torsten, by the way. Name's Torsten."

Alinta just quirked a brow, her mouth slipping into a frown for a second before she glanced away from the other Oban and back towards the path ahead. She had to be careful since there was debris everywhere and even if it was mostly muck, some sort of mixture of wet sand and mud, the hybrid didn't want to slip and twist an ankle or worse. "Bad timing for a patrol or fortunate depending on the perspective." She replied after a moment as she continued forward, the hybrid looking at the offered hand before simply slipping down next to him instead. "Ali." She introduced herself with a nod, not seemingly ignoring the hand to be rude but rather more so because she could take care of herself. If she was in a more formal setting by her family she would have probably considered taking the offered hand, but this was during her training hours with some stranger so she refused to show weakness here. It wasn't like she was presenting herself as a lady who needed the formalities after all.

"It doesn't seem to be too deep around here." She didn't mind as the mud went up to her calves, the hybrid pushing through it so that she could start trying to move anything that looked dangerous out of the path to clear it for others who may need to move through or to see if anything or anyone was trapped beneath. "So far nothing." She pursed her lips as she pulled away a large piece of a fallen wooden stand. "Maybe they ran away in time?" There was a stairway towards the upper streets right around the corner, not including the one that they had just climbed down as well.

Torsten thought a moment before he shrugged. "Guess it's fortunate then. It's my job to be where people need help, you know." His hand waved uselessly in the air as Alinta went by it, amused rather than offended. This girl seemed the capable type. As it should be. "Just glad no one needed scooping up while I was running. That woulda got complicated."

He walked up the street to look in the direction the mud had come from and let out a low whistle. "What a mess. Doesn't look like much damage to the buildings. It swept through and took what wasn't nailed down." He reached out to nudge a café sign lodged in the mud, though there was no café in sight from their current position. He looked up sharply when a faint voice called out.

'Hello? Anyone out there?'

He turned a few times and shouted out, "Hey! Keep talking!" He looked to Ali and pointed to the stairs. "I think it came from that way?"

A rare chuckle left Alinta's lips at the response. "Yes, that does seem like it would be a rather complicated situation." She mused before pushing more of the stand out of the way, the wood creaking as she prepared to move along before the faint voice reached their ears and had Alinta stopping in her tracks. She had been hoping that since the buildings had survived most of the mess that no one had been severely injured, but now there was a voice asking for her? Her expression shifted with determination before she nodded at Torsten. "Sounds like it." Had some of the debris washed up the stairs?

"Are you injured?" Her voice rang throughout the streets and Alinta started trudging forward towards the stairs, each step coming down quicker than the last as she pushed herself towards the source of the noise. "I know a bit of first aid if it's necessary. Just keep talking to us!" Did she see a hint of someone around the corner? In that mess of debris that had washed up during the mudslide?

The stairs had a little mud along the steps, making Torsten move a little slower to keep from slipping back down. The upper level had a heavy layer of muck that had flowed over the wall with the force of the slide. Everything up there had been pushed to one side, piled up in front of a small building. The door to the building was blocked by debris, and through that door peered out a pair of searching eyes. "Hey, are you okay?"

The woman behind the door sighed with relief. "I'm fine, but the door's blocked by all that crap. I can't move it on my own."

Torsten looked at Ali, and then gave the hidden Oban a bright smile. "Don't worry, ma'am. Torsten and Ali are at your service." With a little elbow nudge at Ali, he trotted through the muck and grabbed at the debris to clear the doorway.

Ah, so there was someone there! Alinta nodded at Torsten, her expression thoughtful as she studied how he handled the situation. Not bad, not bad. He surely was a trained soldier after all for being so professional and willing to help. Not like a certain nephew who was probably still sleeping through all of this....definitely different. She confirmed before moving to help, the hybrid not even bothered by the muck as she started digging through it. She could always wash up later though that would definitely mean sneaking in through the back to avoid any questions. Alinta frowned at the thought before shaking her head and focusing on the task at hand.

"Alright, the debris is mostly gone but we'll need to free the door." It was probably still stuck because of the sheer force of the mudslide, meaning that she would probably need help yanking it open. Alinta glanced over towards Torsten and nodded towards the door. "Ready?" They could work together, keeping each other stable as they pulled against the thing that had been sealed wtih mud.

The pair was able to make quick work of the debris. Considering the situation Torsten had lost hope for keeping his clothes clean, but he did pause to glare at a mucky glop that had found its way into his hair. With his muddy hands, cleaning that up would have to wait. He tried to scoop at the mud holding the door at first, but it was mud... any hole he made quickly filled back in. Alinta's idea earned a grin and a nod. He grabbed where he could and braced himself. "Ma'am, get ready to push from in there," he called to the woman inside. "One, two, three, go!"

With a hefty heave, the door opened wide enough for the woman to topple forward with a yelp when her feet hit the mud. Torsten's arm snapped out to catch her before she could land and get stuck in the muck. "Are you alright, ma'am?"

The woman blushed and shook her head. "Ah, I'm just fine now that I'm not stuck in there any more. Thank the gods you two came along when you did. Bless you both."

Torsten grinned even brighter and gave the woman a little salute. "Just doing my duty, ma'am. You be safe now." He turned to Alinta and gave her one as well. "Shall we? It's nice having a competent companion, and there are surely others needing a hand."

"I suppose." Alinta smiled at the woman as she started back inside, coming out with a shovel to try and clear more of the debris from the doorway. Even if they had helped her out the area was still a mess and she couldn't help but to feel bad. Maybe a local mage could help out more? All she could do was physically force her way through situations...magic was beyond her skills. A soft sigh left her lips at the thought before she glanced back towards Torsten with a small nod. Oh well. At least they had managed something good today without it.

"Good job, soldier. Let's go make sure no one else is in trouble like this." At least she had an excuse to avoid studies for a bit longer. Others in need were always a priority after all.
