Things may be peaceful in Tendaji these days, but that doesn't mean that trouble doesn't suddenly appear out of nowhere. In fact, you just happen to stumble upon trouble and must figure out the best way to step in and help (or not, if you're more of the troublemaker type).
[ This is a roll and react event. So roll the dice and react to the prompt below depending on your number. If you're RPing with more than one person, have one person roll and all players react. ]
Roll 1d20
1 - 5: Fire! A small fire has broken out at the local village. But what is on fire and who might be involved is up to you in your prompt response. Find a way to help keep it under control and get anyone out safely.
6 - 10: Mudslide It has been a dry few weeks, and many were excited about the rains coming in. But alas, it seems that too much rain has caused a mudslide. The damage isn't bad, but there might be a few people missing that need to be tracked down.
11 - 15: Flood One late-summer storm has caused the rivers to swell, and increased the risk of someone or something getting swept away. You happen to be in the right place at the right time to catch sight of a thing bobbing in the waters. What is it and how will you help?
16 - 20: Earthquake Tendaji doesn't get too many earthquakes, so it's surprising when the ground begins to shake. Not terrible enough to split the ground, this quake was still strong enough to shake up the community and cause some problems. Explore the damage and see if you can find any way to help out the community.

Every Yaeli knows to beware the rains. Caolan supposes it's bred down into their bones to distrust everything, even the ground beneath your feet. The island they live on is treacherous - their ancestors wouldn't have been marooned here, if that wasn't the case, and warnings from ages past had become cautionary tales and superstitions that carried on into the modern world.
For much of his life, Caolan thought that being more adventurous like his father was a boon. His mother, by contrast, was scared and worried of everything, and he'd come to see that worry as a barrier between himself and the world, something to sneak around and hide from.
Maybe he wouldn't be in this situation if he'd listened to a few more of her warnings.
The day was sunny, but in the sort of humidly oppressive ways the air held the heat after a storm. The rains had passed the night before and, feeling it was safe, Caolan had scooped up his notebook and headed out, hoping he could find somewhere lush to practice his paintings. He was far enough from home that no one would hear his calls, but close enough to inspire hope that maybe, somehow, he'd be recovered.
What exactly happened, Caolan couldn't say. He didn't fall down a crevice and into the caves below, nor did he twist his ankle and stumble. One moment he was walking, stepping over the trickling of what he thought to be a tiny tributary, shooting off down the rocks from a rain-swollen river - the next he was falling, swept underwater. His hands blanched out and met rock, all around him... above, behind, below - and with a jolt of horror he realized he'd been sucked under the rocks, into the caverns.
Fate took a flip of the coin in that moment. The powerful flow of the water could suck him further into the underbelly of the land, where he'd drown or be knocked about into the rocks until, one day, he became another one of the hidden skeletons of Yael.
But it didn't. Instead, by some miracle, he was swept out from the crushing claustrophobia of the caves, and instead out into a river - flowing so fast he could only kick, desperately, to keep his head above water, taking in desperate gasps for air that only partly succeeded.

The rains would bring out plenty of worms and other moisture-loving bugs that would make for good bait. The moment the storm passed and the rain lightened up, Nok was out in the woods again. He had his fishing supplies set up by the river and was digging around for the fresh bait, though he consistently kept an eye on the rushing water. The rain had raised the water level very clearly, so he had to be alert to any further sudden rises if any rocks or other barriers gave way.
His alertness was the only reason he noticed someone stuck in the middle of the rapids. He would never have heard their weakened flailing over the crashing water otherwise! He straightened up sharply and unclipped his cloak to let it fall at his heels. He couldn't tell who it was, but someone had gotten caught and it didn't look good for them. He didn't have a long enough net on hand, and an earthling's weight would just break his fishing pole... but he couldn't just let the person drown!
The power of the swollen river tugged at him the moment he jumped in, but he kept his movements controlled and focused. Panic would only make it worse. It was just enough to get close to the distressed victim and he reached out to grab at the violet head. As much as he wanted to call out a warning or say something, the water was too rough to utter a single word clearly. He could only hope the person would calm down with someone else there. A shallow area of the river ahead would be their best bet, and flailing about would make getting back out that much more difficult.

Caolan, if he had the air in his lungs to do so, would have screamed at the hand that grabbed at him through the waves, certain it was some sort of menacing watery spirit here to drag him under. Perhaps it was lucky, because if he'd realized it was a rescuer at first he would have clung, likely turning into a deadweight and dragging them BOTH below the river as a consequence.
He didn't flail or struggle, as his fear made him go still instead, frozen as the hand gripped at him - and it was only then, after the first horrifying few moments, that he recognized it was HELP.
Feebly, he kicked his legs and arm to help them move, and with the others' focused movements helping, they began to fight past the current and towards the shore - until, with a sob, his body landed in the shallows. Fingers dug deep into the mucky sand, heaving himself further onto land, body shaking too hard for him to so more than lift his head just enough to take in greedy gulps of air.

Once he was sure he had a good grip, Nok's focus turned completely to getting to the shallows. Trying to direct two fully dressed people through a rushing river required every ounce of effort he had.. but they somehow managed to reach where he could feel the ground underneath his feet.
He gasped sharply, giving one last burst of effort to help the both of them further toward dry land. It was encouraging to see the other working to pull themselves along as well! So, he didn't feel too bad when he finally let go of his charge and flopped out onto the ground with half his body still in the water. He stretched out on his back with relief to suck at the air.
It was a minute before he turned his attention to the poor sod he had pulled from the river, and even then only turned his head to look wordlessly to inspect the other's state.
Alive. Good.

It was ... freezing. Normally, Yael was warmer than anything, but in the rush of the river it was cold. Caolan sagged in relief as the adrenaline began to ebb, leaving him exhausted. He felt like a pathetic, wet sack of grain, soaked through and ruined - and that didn't even take into account his rescuer, who looked similarly exhausted.
"I - thank- phew!" Caolan used all the energy in him to roll onto his back, aware of the mud sticking to him as he did so.
So - the two sat, in silence, just panting for breath.

Now that the adrenaline was falling, Nok was feeling the chill of the water sinking into his skin. He would have preferred to lie there longer, but it would be best to move. With a sharp shiver, he grunted sharply and rolled onto his side to sit upright.
From this vantage, he was also able to get a better look at the other... and squinted slightly. Was that..? "Seen you before." He didn't know that many people, and even fewer retained valuable brain space in his head. "Caolan." That was the name! "River not usually that fast. Too much rain," he observed. "Swim now is bad idea." This certainly wasn't the time for some casual swimming, clearly!

Caolan finally cracked his eyes open and, after what felt like a long time, he pushed himself up, grimacing. He was freezing still (though warming quickly thanks to Yaeli's typical humid temperature), but also had recovered enough from the terror of the situation to be disgusted at the mud streaked all over him. He blinked though and peered at the other man, eyebrows raising in surprise. Right. He did look familiar... though he was sure he wasn't someone who lived in town, since he didn't know his name off the top of his head.
He did recognize him from his sister pointing him out though. Wasn't this the guy who called her--
"Hah-- no sh--" He started, only to dissolve into breathy giggles, propping his elbows on his knees so he could hand his head between them, drawing in a deep, calming breath.
"Wasn't swimming, I just... fell." He explained, breathing out again. He was, somehow, alive...
"You saved my life."

Nok's eyes widened at the display of the other's nervous energy. This was no laughing matter. Had Caolan hit his head in the river at some point? "Fell," he repeated. Ah, yes, then there had certainly been some sort of impact! Perhaps he would have to keep an eye on Caolan to make sure there wasn't too much damage before sending him home. A knock to the head could be dangerous, after all!
His head cocked slightly, and then nodded in casual agreement. "Yup." Indeed he had saved the young man's life. Now that the matter was settled... He looked down at himself with a sigh and started undressing to wring out his soaked clothes. Walking would be uncomfortable enough as it was! "My stuff got left upriver. You rest, but be fast. Don't want someone takin' my stuff."

Well. The guy was pretty calm about all this, but in a way it was reassuring to Caolan. He answered with a still slightly dopy giggle, but closed his eyes, rubbing his eyes with the heels of his palms. Nok was undressing, which Caolan knew was a good idea, but it felt like his energy reserves were miles away.
"Your-- oh. Yeah-- let's go get your stuff." He answered, tugging his shirt off so he could squeeze the water from it, scrambling up to stand. He'd lost a shoe somehow, in all of that, and he felt the sting of scratches along his palms and forearms, but all in all ... he was fine. Alive.
He felt like laughing again, but Nok was looking at him weirdly and he didn't want to freak him out more than he already had.

Each layer was squeezed and shaken out. The water and the sudden drop of adrenaline made it feel chilly. Nok was grateful that the air was warm enough that they shouldn't have too worry about getting chill sick. He didn't need that spreading through his clan.
"You leave anything where you fell? Need to get stuff?" His eyes scanned back up along the river. Caolan could have come from anywhere! It was more likely that anything the other had been using was all washed down river. Still, Nok's social practices had been improving enough that he thought to ask about more than his own needs.

Did he-- huh. Caolan glanced down at himself, hands patting over him. His satchel, though, which contained his art book and charcoals, was gone. It was possible it had come off when he slipped, but in the end he mentally agreed with Nok - his things were likely long gone, and would reappear in a river somewhere, or get lodged underground, where his body might have --
He shuddered at the thought.
"Nothing so dear I want to try looking for it, and slip all over again." He croaked, grimacing as he looked at the other man. Then, he flashed a weary, but thankful smile. "Thanks."

With his clothing no longer dripping, he pulled the pants back on and hooked the few other items over one shoulder. At least his cloak would be dry where he had dropped it. With a small nod of understanding, he turned to start walking back along the river.
Thanks? He looked back over his shoulder curiously. There was something he was supposed to say here.. what was it again? "You are welcome." Yeah, that was it! Before he knew it, a small smile was lifting his lips as well. Interacting with others was definitely getting easier! Particularly when that other person was someone he was already at least a little familiar with. Their last interaction had been some time ago, but Nok's memory was good enough to remember it fairly clearly. "You are a good one to save."

Caolan, meanwhile, wasn't about to whip off his pants, so instead he squelched after Nok, grimacing as his shoeless foot scraped against the limestone rock beneath them. It was a moment of walking before Nok spoke, and Caolan glanced up, lips twitching into a grin. He still felt an exhausted giddiness at surviving, though on its heels was a looming exhaustion. He wasn't above going home and crawling into his mother's bed for hugs, despite being a near adult.
But then Nok talked again, and Caolan ducked his head a bit, scrubbing at his neck with a rush of flustered shyness. "Glad you think so. Since you uh-- did. Save me."
He'd have to pay him back, somehow. Maybe, even with their history, Alfina would agree to cooking something for him to bring over? Some splattered painting didn't feel sufficient as thanks, not when Nok seemed like to type to like practical stuff.
Maybe one of dad's maps or something?

Nok couldn't help but to pause a moment to observe Caolan. What was the word people used... Sweet? No, that was to describe food. Umm.. Well, whatever the word was, Nok's smile grew. "I did. Will again, if you need." The smile fell and his expression became serious. "Would rather you not need saved again. Be careful."
Now, they just had to get his things and he would make sure Caolan got back home safely.
