You've heard rumors of a local beast that has been causing trouble, always striking and darting away without a trace. Many have tried to capture it, but with no success. Now that fall is settling in, the community is distressed at the trouble being caused and has asked for your help in finding the beast and either relocating or finding away to get rid of it from the community.
[ A creature is terrorizing the community, but what is it and is it really such a problem? Use the fauna thread to pick out a local beast and tell us how your character found and if they remove or relocate it...or maybe even tame it as their own (not all fauna can be tamed). ]
Ever since the earthquake Finn had been in a mood. While he was snippier than usual with those in the caravan the yaeli outright ignored Katori. When spoken to he would answer in one word answers, do what was asked of him and then go on about his business. Day by day they were getting closer to her families sanctuary and he was no closer to calming than he'd been that very first day.
That very morning they'd split off from the group and were now on their own, much to his chagrin. The caravan itself would be heading down an opposing path, thus taking them further away from the North, so while it made sense in the long term he still wasn't pleased with the notion. At least around others he had a reason - an excuse - not to talk to her. Now? It was either her or the dirt.
At the very least they were passing through a smaller village - a trading outpost, really - when the rumors caught up to him. A beast as white as the mountain snows had been causing issues for a while now. It would strike just before the hunters could grab it and disappear for days before repeating it's actions. Something needed to be done!
Finn would have passed it up entirely if there wasn't the promise of coin and now here he was, traipsing about the Sauti-Zena border looking for a solid white beast.

The damned guy was back at it. How frustrating! The hybrid wasn’t a fool and had noticed the obvious atmosphere around Finn and how he would literally talk to everyone besides her after the events of the earthquake. Katori simply endured the last few days of traveling as best as she could by distracting herself with helping anyone and everyone with whatever she could. Even though she spotted some lingering bruises along various parts of her body from the collapsed rocks they were mostly fading and the cuts along her face and upper body had healed up into faint lines with some ointment from the locals who were thankful for her help during the earthquake. What honestly bothered her the most was the feral beast that she was stuck with once more. Why was it when she felt like they had a breakthrough or actually could stand each other that things seemingly reset if not seeming even worse than before?
Now the inevitable had occurred and Katori was traveling alone with Finn. She had said her farewells to the caravan which was set on a separate path away from Zena and after packing up everything, making certain they had plenty of supplies on Star who was happy enough to share the load, Katori kept moving by foot so that she could have plenty of space away from Finn. Could they ride together on the quiristine? Yes, honestly but it was best to let Star conserve his energy to carry their supplies rather than the two riders who had a static between them that was only building with time as Katori’s own frustrations grew. If they made it to the sanctuary she was tempted to give Finn whatever wild animal they had, hopefully a raptrix, and then slap its flank to send him into the mountains on his own. The very thought made her stomach twist in a strange way which made her even more aggravated and Katori could only mutter something about scouting before going on ahead to check out the area along the way to the trading outpost.
Of course there was a beast problem. While Katori was normally eager to help out there was something annoying about the timing and she couldn’t help the sigh that left her lips whenever the appeal of coin got Finn’s interest. For once she looked hesitant to take care of something, but in all honesty it was because she was worried about Finn and how he would react….to what? Katori shook her head before leaving Star behind with the local inn for safe keeping while tracking out after the Yaeli to see what they could find about this solid white beast. If it was a raptrix or something she could try to calm it down and maybe even take it to the sanctuary with them if the creature needed help or to be relocated since Katori’s family was experienced with such matters. Just think of the solid white beast and not the one in front of you. She thought while pressing her lips tightly together, striding forward to try and look for any tracks.
“There.” The one word left her lips as she gestured towards a patch of forest along the path. “Tracks.” It should be something with large claws based on the rumors…there was some fresh snow that had fallen across the prints so it was hard to tell what they were dealing with exactly. Katori frowned at the thought as she moved forward to try to see if there were any additional tracks in the area.

Finn didn't care that she was being helpful; the yaeli stilled turned on Katori with the same venom as if she'd called him a slur. When he shook his head and moved to inspect the tracks it was with a scoff. At the very least it seemed like the locals weren't making up tales. He'd half expected to come all the way out here only to find a little moracker chewing through feed bags and tent flaps. These though...these were from something far more formidable.
While she moved forward, Finn stayed back to examine them further. There was something odd about the tracks that he couldn't place. The shifting snow didn't lend much in the way of an identity, but the snow looked like it had been messed around by something and not just the wind. Something long, and maybe-
-feathered?
A loud, shrill cry from above caused him to look toward the sky. Even if he couldn't see the beast just yet he knew they'd been spotted. By the time he did make eye contact with it a massive Chiavi was slammed him onto his back, massive talons clenching around his shoulders and biceps like prey.

Spirits! Katori's hands clenched into fists, her nails digging into the palms of her hands as Finn turned away. "If there's something wrong tell-" She started to hiss out as she nearly reached the end of her patience with Finn especially now that they were alone together and away from any potential observers. She wanted to unleash her questions and frustrations when the chiavi decided it was a grand time to fly into the area. The type of beast was familiar with Katori but the size of this particular one was massive. Normally anyone would feel intimidated by the giant creature with its sharp talons but Katori was rather peeved as it was and seeing Finn in danger only served to increase her rage. So instead of backing away or trying to think clearly about the situation the hybrid went fully feral, her anger making her gaze bright as she turned on the chiavi.
"GET. OFF." Instead of digging into her palms, her fingers now clenched around icy water as Katori formed a whip and lashed out against the chiavi. There was no way that she was allowing that creature to fly off with Finn! If anyone got to rip him to shreds today then it would be her for his ridiculous behavior lately! Her whip lashed out without hesitation as she wrapped it around a talon to tug the chiavi back down towards the ground, the pressure tilting it and hopefully allowing Finn a chance to wiggle free.

Finn dropped his staff in favor of grabbing hold of the talons currently digging into his flesh. One was clamped on his right shoulder blade, another onto his left bicep, but the one that truly stung was the one on the left side of his ribcage. The grip there seemed the most awkward so the Chiavi was doubling down on it's strength, clearly intent on keeping it's prey even as Katori made herself known.
He was lifted off the ground for all of a few minutes before the Chiavi was crying out. If anything the massive beast clung onto him harder until Finn singed it's leg with a burst of fire. With another shriek it flung him down onto the ground, and he landed with a hard thud that did his injured body no favors.
When it landed this time it was between him and Katori, one massive foot uncomfortably close to his head, as if defending it's prey from another predator.

Katori’s throat was tight as she watched Finn being flung around and then guarded within the span of a few seconds. There was a moment of hope whenever she saw the burst of fire coming from the Yaeli to scorch the chiavi’s leg, but the beast was determined to keep hold of its prey. Katori’s gaze narrowed thoughtfully as she watched the chiavi and slowly moved towards the side as if testing it. The beast followed her every movement with a rotation of its head, the hungry gleam obvious in its dark gaze. It would probably try to fly away again even if she held onto it with her water whip. Katori cursed softly under her breath as she tried to calm her racing heart so that she could think straight. She was so prone to just rushing into danger but seeing Finn so close to those deadly talons held her back from being completely reckless. It nearly drove her mad seeing him in such danger and being unable to drag him away even though he was right in front of her.
While she moved back and forth like a pacing predator, her body swaying but never directly approaching the chiavi, the hybrid had a low growl almost in her throat as if challenging the other predator. Her mind was racing and while Katori realized that the chiavi was waiting for her to lower her guard so that it could fly away with its meal she also recalled how sensitive they were to light and sound. “Close your eyes.” She called out without even looking at Finn for fear that the chiavi would take that as its chance to fly away. Instead Katori gave Finn all of a few seconds to prepare himself, the hybrid slamming her hands together. The contact created a loud thunderclap of noise, a breeze actually shoving things back with its impact and a bright light flooded the area like a bolt of lightning had actually shocked the ground in front of them. The chiavi was unbalanced and its wings spread out in a frenzy as it moved around but Katori was already diving, her body darting between Finn and the chiavi so that its talons struck her back instead of Finn as she rolled with him into the forest to give them some cover before the creature came back again.

Burning the chiavi alive would be a lot easier if he could breathe properly. Finn placed a hand over the puncture in his left side, holding it as best he could with what he assumed to be a broken collarbone on the right. Really sucked that Tacrith hadn't decided to come along at the last second, especially when he felt the urge to cough and his exhale gurgled.
Finn had no idea what he was even looking at. A giant avian, bigger than the kinfa he'd seen in Tale, with talons the size of blades. He rolled his head on the ground, doing his best to keep a visual on the events as they played out while trying to formulate a plan in his head.
The creature's feathers fluffed just from watching Katori and it lowered it's head. He may not have been savvy to the Northern beasts, but in his eye it looked like it was making itself seem bigger than it was which was pointless. Nothing would compare to this thing in size; he was sure of that much.
Without reason to argue, Finn closed his eyes and immediately grit his teeth against the sound. His lighter body actually rolled a few feet, and had the yaeli not reached out to grab the earth it might have been further! It might have been enough to stabilize him until Katori doze into him and they both went tumbling into the woods.
There was no hiding his wheeze or the resounding wet, bloody cough that came out of the act. "What the hell is that thing?!"

“A chiavi.” Managed Katori as she slowly pulled away from Finn to crouch on the ground next to him. Thankfully they had landed next to the base of a tree which Katori hoped would give them enough coverage for the time being. “It must be desperate for some reason. I’ve never seen one dive after an earthling like this.” She winced as she felt the dampness on her back but the hybrid turned to Finn instead since he had taken the brunt of the damage. She had seen how the Yaeli grabbed at his body and heard the wet cough that escaped his lungs. If something was severely punctured…well they would have limited time.
Her mind was racing now that they were away from the chiavi’s gaze and Katori chewed on her bottom lip before moving towards Finn. First things first. She took a deep breath to steady herself as she started to remove Finn’s tunic without warning. “We don’t have much time but I have a rough ability to heal. It won’t do a lot but maybe I can stabilize you until we get out of this mess.” Then they could get to the nearest healer at the trading post and to her home from there where they both could recover from their recent wounds. She let out a hiss when she saw the punctured left side but Katori didn’t stop as she grabbed some ointment from her travel satchel and started to apply it to the wound, her hands glowing faintly as she also muttered a few words under her breath and continued pushing herself so that the deep puncture could heal a bit the skin rough and still purplish red but mended back together enough for the moment. She just hoped that her magic was enough to keep his lungs from being completely ruptured.
Her whole body tensed though as she heard the angry cries of the chiavi as it circled around the edges of the forest. They would have a few more moments probably before the beast decided to chase after them unless…unless it was guarding a particular area? Katori’s gaze narrowed thoughtfully as she tried to rationalize why a great beast would be so aggressive. If it had been completely rabid then it would have attacked without even worrying about her trying to intimidate it back. “Just try to stick near this tree for safety, I don’t think it can easily get here. I want to see if there’s something around this area to give us hints about that chiavi.”

"Could you at least wait-?!" Finn had already been fighting a chill before the attack, but now a harsh shiver down down his body, causing his already wounded body to recoil. It wouldn't take the beast long to figure out where they had gone, or at the very least, to start searching for them. The smell of blood would be strong enough between the pair of them to draw it in.
He couldn't hold his stomach when the wound was being messed with and quickly turned his head to the side to vomit. Most was blood, considering they'd eaten hours ago, but in a strange way it felt better. Almost like he could at least breathe and that the pressure was gone. It was still sore and tense, with his collarbone still fractured, but at least he wasn't in any immediate worry of dying.
"It's...kind of acting like a mother? Like the xaraan back at the stable I worked at in Oba." Finn grumbled. It was a lot different than the beasts he'd saddled back in the sands, but the behavior was eerily similar. "...still doesn't make sense why she's been attacking people, though."

As much as Katori would have preferred to wait so that Finn could be more comfortable, the urgency of the situation had her moving without remorse. If she waited any longer then she was afraid about what that injury could have done to the Yaeli. As frustrated as she was with him lately the hybrid deeply cared about her companion, more than she even wanted to admit. If anything she had to wonder about the rolling emotions she had dealt with just seeing Finn in danger and wondered if that related to how he may have felt whenever she….well she simply didn’t have the time to ponder about such things now. All she could do is help him sit against the tree away from the vomited blood, hoping that the slight breeze would stay in their favor and keep the scent away from the chiavi for the time being.
“That’s what I’m wondering.” Murmured Katori as she left her cloak for Finn, the heavy wool only slightly tattered from the chiavi’s talons since her rushed movement had pulled the material aside while her actual tunic took most of the impact. Her vision spun for a moment but the hybrid simply closed her eyes tightly before taking a few steps forward. “If the baby is sickly then maybe the mother is just trying to do whatever she can to help it.” Even if it meant bringing strange prey home? Or had someone been trying to poach chicks? Either option made her grimace.
“I’m going to try to entice the chiavi and see if I can get it to calm down.” If it was a worried mother then perhaps she could try to offer it some food instead. Katori paused thoughtfully before digging through her travel supplies. It wasn’t as if she had enough food for an army but if the bird was looking to feed her chick then Katori had some dried fish from their latest stop that she had been planning on using for their journey. The hybrid quickly wrapped it up before glancing one last time at Finn. “Are you okay waiting here?” She asked with concern, her gaze flickering about them to see how much time they had. If Finn was settled then she would go ahead and start calling out the chiavi. Since she had been raised around a few the hybrid knew their calls and would try her best to appear friendly to see if she could appease the wary beast and entice it to the food that she was offering, not Finn.

Just getting settled into a different spot caused Finn's stomach to roll. He very nearly repeated his earlier act, but the yaeli was able to keep himself steady. There were some choice words under his breath as he pulled the heavy wool over himself; mostly expletives about the North and what one could do with it.
Now that he could see the damage she'd taken as well Finn very nearly grabbed Katori's hand to pull her back. What was the use in keeping him behind if she looked like that? "Or if the egg was stolen." He'd seen it enough. Poachers staking out high value nests to run off with eggs or younger creatures. "Beast like that would sell for a lot and even if it's chicks weren't solid white their size would be enough."
So what? She was just going to go out there and wave around some food like a magic wand? His face was very expressive in the moment, but ultimately Finn sighed and leaned back against the tree. "Go on then; get. If you can't calm it down, though, I'm burning it. Job ends when the threats over."

Katori could only let out a curse when she listened to Finn’s explanation. “I know exactly how I’d treat a few poachers if I ever ran into them.” She muttered, anger making her stand straighter despite her own injuries. Katori understood she was stubborn but that didn’t mean that she would back down now. There was a situation and she would deal with it. What would be the point if they simply let the chaivi go now? It wasn’t in her nature to ignore others in need and just imagining how any other travelers that weren’t as able to fight back encountering such a beast made her stomach turn. Not as badly as Finn’s stomach apparently. Katori couldn’t help feeling more concern as she glanced over the Yaeli. She had stabilized him but how much more could he endure?
Either way she had to focus now. “I’ll do my best. I would prefer to avoid a roasted bird if we can. I’ll be back soon.” She promised as she disappeared into the forest, the cries of the chiavi echoing in the distance and seemingly angrier than before. By the time Katori had reached the area where she had heard the noises there was nothing to save left and she found herself nearly attacking a pair of earthlings instead. Other travelers had come for the coin and only cared about it when it came to this matter. Katori’s heart was nearly shattered and if it wasn’t for her injuries she would have done more than spit sharp words at the pair of warriors. They had taken advantage of the chiavi and she had helped by injuring it earlier! Katori snapped at the pair before rejecting anything they had to say and leaving again. They could keep the coin. She just wanted to get back to Finn and find a healer then go home. Everything hurt both physically and emotionally. She was ready to collapse if it wasn't for the thought of Finn being alone in the forest as injured as he was.
There was something else that bothered Katori though and it was the thought of the chiavi and if it had chicks. So after a moment she swerved away again and started to follow some tracks, her gaze focused as she tried to listen for any signs of life. Eventually she heard it and this time the hybrid was prepared with some calls and food for the wild beasts…though this pair of beasts were a lot smaller and less vicious when they took the dried fish from her. Katori was just thankful that she had paid enough attention to the cries of a mother chiavi that they had helped raise chicks when she was a teen. She could whistle similar noises which made the pair of chicks much easier to capture despite the increasing pain in her back. Stubborn with a ridiculously high pain tolerance was definitely something her family always complained about. Katori recalled with a slight grin as she finally wobbled back into view near Finn. “I….” She started as she appeared with a fuzzy bundle beneath each arm, the pair of white chicks making various cries as she tucked them in closer to her sides to try to help keep them warm. “A pair of hunters appeared so….so I did what I could by finding these.” Katori finally managed weakly tears brimming in her gaze and flowing freely down her cheeks as she held onto the chicks even while barely standing herself.

Finn wasn't proud of how he handled himself after Katori left. The yaeli had tried to keep an eye on the area, but he felt his eyes fluttering closed. Blood loss coupled with his own exhaustion of the day and a sudden loss of adrenaline laid him low. While he was drifting he never actually fell asleep, though; instead Finn found himself jerking to consciousness at random bursts. Every sound woke him and he would turn sharp eyes toward it, one hand raised in defense, but it was always just sounds. Noises in the distance, not all of them pleasant, and spirits was his arm even supposed to hang that way?
By the time Katori came back with her bundles he was in a semi-state of comfort. Finn was used to bedding down in worse spots, with much more dire injuries, so while uncomfortable it wasn't the worst. He gave the ground beside him a pat and lifted the flap of her cloak. If he was cold then she must be too and...well, she looked like she needed it.
"You did good. I'm sure she'd say the same."

FIN
"Thank you." The words were so soft, Katori's tears still trailing down her cheeks as she accepted the offer to sit next to Finn. The hybrid was a wreck even though she tried her best to look strong there was still a heart beneath that rough exterior and it was obvious that the whole situation had affected her. All she could do for now was sit next to Finn in silence as the chicks settled in next to them, the fluffy creatures seeking out the warmth of the two earthlings even as the pair kept each other company as well. Eventually Katori would even rest her head against Finn for a moment, her eyes closing as she rested next to someone that she felt surprisingly comfortable with despite all of their friction. When they both had enough strength again they could move to town and get a proper healer for them both, hopefully that would give them the strength and rest needed to get the rest of the way to the animal sanctuary...to her home where she could try to piece herself together again after all of these recent and very stressful events.
