At first the bag of books sat innocuously on the desk that would come to house her laptop. Then the bag got shifted to the floor when the laptop came. When the bag seemingly disappeared did Jane nearly throw a fit because those books were going to assist her in choosing a new name. However it had happened though one day Jane had felt the urge to peer underneath her bed and sure enough the bag, although on its side and spilled open, was clearly visible. Pulling on the handles of the fabric satchel did Jane discover that at least one book had fully escaped its confines and she reached in with an exasperated groan before snagging the escapee. Dragging the book towards her yielded answers and she glanced at the book of names before promptly throwing it to the end of her bed where her pillows sat. For some reason she couldn't explain she just knew that the name that she was trying to fashion for herself would not be found in this particular book. Even if she had thumbed through the first few pages there was a feeling that she would not use any of the names found within.
In her mind that was a good enough reason to trust her instincts. Perhaps if she got the receipt back from Sonia that they could return to the bookstore and try to receive a refund back as it was a book that they hadn't meant to buy.
Instead of dwelling on such things Jane cracked open the first book that was part of what seemed to be a quartet and found herself immediately drawn into the realm of Tortall and the characters that materialized from within. It was perhaps the fact that the author had such a way to grab the reader's attention and keep in that found the young woman spending what could have been too much time just flipping pages as words sped by. It wasn't until the alarm on her phone went off that Jane realized that she'd been reading for a solid hour and even as she found a piece of paper to mark her place in the novel did she regretfully close the book. The image of the horse that she now knew to be Cloud stared back at the reader as the author's name was just below. Names had been mentioned in the book and even as she came across each new character that was introduced she had been sounding out the pronunciation of each name and trying to see if anything struck a chord inside: but nothing had.
Only then, as she stared at the author's name, did something seem to click with Jane. While Tamora probably wasn't the most common of names there was a chance that one would confuse it with Tamara and Jane knew for a fact that she wasn't looking to call herself Tamara. So it seemed as if Tamora was out for a naming option as well. But ... there was just something so interesting about how the rest of the name sounded in her mind. Mentally removing the T from the name left her with something that sounded like it could be a name ... Amora.
Even as she sounded it out a few more times did Jane come to realize that something about Amora just seemed to click into place. So it seemed as if the first part of her new identity was created. Jane, er, Amora hesitated on what would be the hardest part now. Did she need a middle name for posterity's sake or would it be too problematic? The idea of shedding the name of Jane seemed too final, too soon. Maybe it would happen in the future but she had been calling herself that for so many weeks now that it just didn't seem appropriate to rid herself of the common moniker. It was with that decision that she came to rest on the second part of her new identity: Amora Jane.
Now the last part would be interesting to find a surname that would tie everything up together in a nice little bow. For a while Amora lay back on her bed with her head on her pillows before retrieving the book of names from where it had landed on the floor earlier. Was there even a section of surnames that one might need? Thumbing through the introduction and chapter guide had the woman scrunching up her nose. Most chapters remained focused on first names alone as one would assume a buyer of such a book would already have surnames that they would pass onto a baby that was expected. Sighing in annoyance did Amora return the book to the bag before attempting to draw inspiration from the newspaper that she had pilfered from the table earlier. While the paper itself wasn't very interesting in itself she had been borrowing them on occasion to just browse and see if anything else sparked any ideas for names. Her eyes glanced over the actual stories in the paper itself before she moved onto the classifieds section. Her gaze roamed over the lost and found section before moving into the Seller's section and, strangely enough, it was here that the inspiration for her surname became known. It had been your typical placed ad regarding the seller's intent to sell but it was gardening tools. She knew that Reed loved to garden and while it was perhaps that fact that caused her to pause and read the ad but what struck her was that the seller had included the brand name of some of the tools and she carefully went over the brand name syllable by syllable before smiling. How ironic that it was Reed's love of gardening that had drawn her gaze to this ad in particular. Pushing the paper aside Jane, now Amora, fished out a blank piece of lined paper and grabbed a pen before scribbling down the three names that would make up her new identity:
Amora Jane Wilcox
Even as she stared down at the complete name did Amora once more feel a certainty about the new moniker click into place. It was who she would become, who she was meant to be. Whomever she had been before her accident was no more.
Now she would be forever more ... Amora.
