You've heard rumors of a local beast that has been causing trouble, always striking and darting away without a trace. Many have tried to capture it, but with no success. Now that fall is settling in, the community is distressed at the trouble being caused and has asked for your help in finding the beast and either relocating or finding away to get rid of it from the community.

[ A creature is terrorizing the community, but what is it and is it really such a problem? Use the fauna thread to pick out a local beast and tell us how your character found and if they remove or relocate it...or maybe even tame it as their own (not all fauna can be tamed). ]

Since landing back on Belrea, Mako had heard the rumors getting more and more extravagant.

'It's like a lizard and just makes a mess in your home.'
'It's as long as an earthling and ran off with my duruf!'
'It's got huge fangs and spits poison if ya get too close!'

Mako had no idea what type of creature the locals were trying to describe, and he was willing to bet that no one else did either. Even those lucky enough to lay eyes on the mysterious beast had no idea what they were looking at. It was both annoying.. and irresistibly intriguing. Mako was ready to find some excitement after a boring week's trip on the ship, and finding this creature was just the thing!

He was going to do it all on his own, too! Hopefully there was not actual poison involved... He was brave though! It would be worth it if he could figure out what it was and help settle the minds of the locals. Maybe they would even give him something in return for a successful mission?

With a small dagger at his hip and sturdy gloves on his hands, the youth crept around the streets in search of his prey. He kept low and to the edges, looking in every nook and cranny that he could find.

A large yawn escaped Kaimana as he leaned over a counter, the Matori’s fingers curled tightly around a cup of hot brew as he fought to wake up. Not that it was super early in the morning, mind you, but the adventurer had a long day before which lasted late into the night while he worked on sketches for his employer. Needless to say he was thankful that the inn had a small bar downstairs where he could enjoy breakfast and drinks. It was also interesting to pick up on the tidbits of floating gossip, something about a strange creature catching his attention the most. At first he thought it could be a snaptrotter on the loose, thankfully not his own, but then there was talk of spitting poison and did someone even mention flying and fire now instead of poison? Okay, maybe these were just baseless stories at this point. Kaimana could only chuckle as he finished off his cup and sat it back on the counter with a few coins. He had to go pick up some more parchment and journals to finish his work and so he gave a slight wave to the waiter before heading towards the front door and out into the street.

Still, it was hard to ignore someone that stood out amongst the normal Belreans in the crowd. Kaimana found himself catching sight of a youngling darting about the corners of a nearby street, the Matori curious about why someone would be stalking about this early in the morning. So without hesitation Kaimana started following along, hoping that he wouldn’t have to stop a pickpocket this early in the day.

Mako was oblivious to those around him as he conducted his search. He probably should have brought a few more tools from the ship than the simple net and his dull carving knife. In his youthful eagerness, he certainly wasn't expecting to need much more! Something to defend himself and something to catch the mystery beast with. Simple!

A low hiss reached his ears as he passed by a stack of crates. He paused quickly and lowered himself even closer to the ground. He'd never heard that kind of sound before! Surely it was from the mystery beast!

Moving like a baby predator learning how to hunt, he crept closer to the crates. One hand moved to his waist to slip the net free of his belt and ready it. The noises were definitely coming from the shadows of the crates. He pursed his lips and cautiously reached forward into one of the crevices. That was a good idea, right?

Kaimana had originally been worried that the kid was a pickpocket, but then he saw him creeping around a stack of crates. Was the kid looking for something in a dark alley? Kaimana's frown deepened as he studied the hazardously piled stack of wooden boxes. It didn't seem likely that a thief would want to go digging about those old dusty boxes because it was far more profitable to go and pluck the purses of those wandering the markets, right? And then to see a net in the kid's hand...one of the crates started to creak and Kaimana moved forward without thinking, his hand reaching out to grab the collar of the kid's shirt so that he could tug him backwards.

"Careful!" He yelled as he pulled the kid away from the crates. "Those weren't stacked properly." Something had definitely disturbed them for the things to wobble like that...and there went one tumbling to the ground. It tumbled and hit the ground with a loud bang, the perfect noise to scare away whatever had been hiding beneath. Kaimana though was too focused on the youngling to notice the darker shadow darting away from the pile of crates, the hissing noise catching his attention though he was too late to catch a glance at whatever it was. "You okay?"

A soft shuffle came from the shadows and Mako grinned wide. He was going to get it! The creak above his head made him freeze though. He barely had time to raise his eyes before he was suddenly yanked backward. He gave a scream of surprise and flailed his arms. There was a voice.. and then the crate fell right where he had been crouched.

With a sigh of relief, he tipped his head back to see his rescuer. "Yeah. I'm okay." He looked back at the crates with a disappointed groan. "It got away, didn't it. Dang!" He looked back up hopefully. "Did you see which way it went?"

"Didn't sound like you're okay with that scream." Kaimana found himself teasing now that they were both out of a dangerous situation. What if he hadn't shown up? That kid would have been squashed! Still, rather than chastising the youngling more the Matori simply appreciated his daring. It's something he would have done probably a long time ago himself....spirits he was lucky to still be alive now, wasn't he?

Kaimana frowned at the question and looked back towards the left where the alley turned a corner and continued. "I think I saw a shadow darting down that way. Do you even know what that thing was?" Even he hadn't gotten a good glance...just what was this kid chasing after?

Heat flushed along Mako's cheeks, and he gave a disgruntled grumble. "Just surprised me is all." It was tempting to sit there and pout, but he had work to do. He pushed himself up and brusquely brushed off his pants. "I'm hopin' it's the beast that's been botherin' everyone." He looked up at the adult and pursed his lips with an internal debate. "You can follow along if you want, but I'm gonna be the one to catch it. I've been tracking it all day."

He had to take a moment to move bits of crate to get his net back with a quick inspection to make sure it was still whole.

"The beast that's been bothering everyone?" Kaimana repeated with a frown. "Seemed rather small if you're talkin' about the same creature I heard about back at the tavern. Didn't that thing supposedly breath fire or poison?" Not to make the kid worried, but still it was a concern if there was even a hint of truth to those stories. Well, it seemed like he would definitely be spending a bit more time in town than expected. Kaimana gave a nod towards the youngling. "I wouldn't dream of stealing your catch so lead the way, captain." He grinned before gesturing the child forward, his own hand moving to grab his hunting knife from its holster. Just in case since he didn't have his trident with him today....who would have thought that he would need such a thing in the middle of town after all?

Mako couldn't help a chuckle while tossing the adult a confident grin. "If I know anything about stories, it's that they get crazier with each person who tells it. Besides, don't need to be big to spit fire and stuff." His shipmates alone were proof of that!

Captain? Naturally, the title bolstered his mood further and he hurried after the shadow that had darted away. "One of the descriptions was that it's like a lizard, so maybe poisonous. Either way, I bet it's not that bad." A few buildings down found them at the entry to another alley. He paused to peer down the dimly lit path. Many shadows for it to hide in. "I bet it's down here now." He dropped down to his previous pose of crouching along the walls and resumed his hunt; nose to the ground and eyes on the shadows. From another stack of crates, he heard the same hiss from earlier and pointed. "You, uh.. first mate! Get on the other side of those boxes so it can't run that way."

"Sounds like you've experienced some exciting things." Teased Kaimana as he followed along with the youngling, hoping that it was something as innocent as a duruf or one of those pesky birds that liked to get into everything. Though the description of a lizard made him frown. What type of Belrean creature would that be? If they were in Matori maybe it would be a rogue alol, but those things were fairly harmless....in Belrea though they could be seen as dangerous since not many had seen the likes of one before. So maybe?

"I'm a bold first mate, so just be prepared to react with that net." Replied Kaimana, his expression somber for once as he moved forward. It was best if he chased out whatever it was instead of letting the kid get hurt. Kaimana heard scuttling but he slid forward, his boots connecting with something that hissed before darting towards the kid. "Net now!" Kaimana yelled hoping that the kid could capture the creature that came bolting out of the crates straight towards the youngling.

Mako shook out the net and squatted, ready to catch whatever came from the shadows. He was practically shaking with anticipation! This time, he would get it!

He squawked out a cry of attack as he pounced toward the quick little form skirting along the ground. "Got it!"

Completely out of its element, the keldari was in a panic. It had been snatched from its home, stuck in a cage, and had escaped into a strange, dry land. Now something was attacking it! It hissed again and struck out at its attacker.

Mako got a quick look at the beast and let out another scream as a mouth of sharp fangs came at his face. He closed his eyes against the impending doom... but felt nothing. He cracked one eye open and let out an explosive sigh of relief. The creature's mouth was caught by the net, preventing it from reaching his face. He quickly snapped a hand to grab near the back of its head to prevent further biting.

What..? He'd seen something like this before, but couldn't remember where. "An eel?" he asked as he held it up in the air for Kaimana to see.

It all happened so quickly! Kaimana felt like everything was caught in slow motion whenever the keldari snapped towards the youngling's face. What if it actually did bite him?! A sigh of relief left him though whenever the thing snapped at the net instead and surprisingly it looked like the kid had a good grip on the snake. "Not an eel." Kaimana let out a chuckle, the tension in his shoulders relaxing as he moved forward to study the creature. He recognized the keldari since his own employer had two of his own that slithered around camp, the pair a lot calmer than this one. "It's called a keldari, poor little guy was probably just startled hence the rattling now." The tail would shake while it was dangling there, the keldari trying to be threatening even though Kaimana knew better.

"They like crystals....here, I may have one or two." He kept them on hand in case he had to take care of Kieran's keldari while they traveled since the others were loathe to deal with the strange creatures. Digging through his pouch Kaimana held out the crystal towards the keldari, the creature's rattling pausing as it studied the offered snack before opening its mouth to awkwardly swallow the crystal despite its predicament. "Poor guy is probably scared and hungry. Feed it some crystals if you want to keep it as a friend if not I'll take it back with me. I know someone who handles keldari fairly often." He offered with a smile towards the youngling waiting to see how the kid would react.

"A keldari? But those live on Yael." Mako's lips pursed contemplatively. That's right! He hadn't been able to explore Yael too much, but he had seen a couple keldari during his time there. "Someone must have brought it over from there."

He relaxed his hold a little as the creature calmed down. "You were scarin' people," he scolded the snake lightly. "Eh. Mom would throw it overboard in two seconds. Probably better if you take it." He held it out, but quickly yanked it back. "Hold on! I was gonna see if I could get a reward for catchin' it!" Those who talked about it spitting fire weren't likely to pay up, but perhaps one of the initial complaints would recognize the creature as it was? "Come on, first mate! I'll share a little with you for your help, and then you can take it to your buddy!" He darted off with the poor keldari dangling in his hand, eager to see if his efforts would be financially worthwhile.

Kaimana laughed. "Lots of things movin' about the world nowadays. Doesn't surprise me that a keldari would hitch a ride with someone." He admitted, giving a nod of agreement to the youngling's words. It wasn't as if a keldari could swim or fly all the way to Belrea on its own after all. If that was the case then Kaimana truly would believe that it could breathe fire! A special keldari indeed..."That's fine, lead the way." Kaimana could only shake his head, watching the keldari and youngling as he slowly followed them down the alley and towards the nearby inn to see about a reward. At least he knew the youngling would be safe and then maybe if they both needed to go towards the docks then that would be best so that Kaimana knew the kid was back safe and sound with his family.
