The Commodore wanted to see her research.

Her views on the Commodore were more complicated than they'd been a year ago. He wasn't flawless, the way she'd once thought he'd been. Early on in their mission, the way he'd lied about the purpose of their weapon had almost gotten her killed when battle had broken out. He was trying to kill Caedus, who Naeria had decided was her friend, and she wasn't entirely sure that his reasons for doing so were sound.

That said, he was also powerful, and kind, and supportive, and also he was the Commodore, the most important person on their world, and he wanted to see her research.

The mix of nerves and giddiness was intense as Naeria gathered up her boxes of mushrooms, stacked so high she could barely see, and made her way down the stairs to the main room, where he'd asked to meet.

She was so full of emotions that she wasn't sure that she'd be able to speak, which wasn't good, because if she could find her voice, maybe she could show Lyndin that there were ways that they could work on Velenia without anyone having to die.

Commodore Lyndin was not an infrequent visitor to the house in Destiny City, even if he did spend most of his time in the Negaverse gifted home in their Dark Kingdom. He stayed there only because it offered the most space to conduct his own research, and develop his own projects.

And, because the Negaverse seemed to like to think they had him under his thumb.

Lyndin liked the days he had an excuse to leave his work; his ethic dictated that he put his the good of Velencya above all else, and if he wasn’t actively pursuing that, he felt like he was failing.

Thankfully, Naeria gave him a very good reason to take a break. This was, after all, for the good of Velencya.

He was downstairs when she arrived, dressed in his fine pressed uniform. He wasn’t wearing his cape, but he carried himself with as much dignity and pride that it didn’t detract from his appearance.

Lyndin was checking the safety defenses on the house when she came down, and as soon as he spotted her he closed the panel in the wall and smiled.

“Cadet Naeria. It’s very good to see you. You’ve been keeping quite busy with your research, I see! Thank you for bringing it.”

It took Naeria a while to make eye contact. She scurried around to get everything set up, a small, proud smile on her face at Lyndin's compliments even as her gaze brushed the floor.

"Of course, Sir," she said, softly. "You're welcome."

The boxes went on the table. She had the basics with her for now, button mushrooms and oyster mushrooms in a few stages of growth. Some were still fuzzy mycelium blanketing the soil, while one box was almost big enough to eat. When those were down, she flicked the holographic screen of her ComTech up. It was open to a presentation called Uses and Efficiency of Fungi.

Once everything was set, she stood silently for a few seconds, awkwardly still. Her nervous thoughts flicked from the battle on the hilltop that had caused her to avoid Lyndin for nearly a year to the recent discussion that had happened on their return to Astraya, the one that had told her that maybe she should be working more on communication.

She should have said something helpful, right then. She should have said something communicative.

Instead, the words that came up through the lump in her throat were, "I showed my preliminary research to Caedus." She swallowed, and quickly added, "Before he had to go into hiding."

Her heart was fluttering. The nerves were threatening to overtake the excitement, now. She didn't know what she was saying.

"He said that I should show you, that you would like it. I'm sorry it took so long, I was-"

The words cut off, but her fingers opened and closed into fists repetitively at her side.

Lyndin watched as she moved about and got everything set up; he seemed impressed with each new specimen, and it was easy to see that she was very invested and involved in the project already. He didn’t take a seat yet, but only because he was still looking at the mushrooms she’d brought with her.

He glanced away from the screen when she mentioned Caedus, but there was only curiosity on his face.

Not anger.

“Is that so? He’s right. I’m very interested in this. I like that you’ve found something you care about. You don’t have to apologize. Good research comes in time. It’s all right, you can relax, Naeria. There’s no pressure here. I’m just excited to see what you’ve been working on.”

When Lyndin said that she could relax, Naeria nodded, but her front teeth were digging into her bottom lip, so she wasn't sure how well she was taking his advice. She wasn't sure how well she'd be able to take his advice.

At least he didn't seem mad that she'd mentioned Caedus.

She swiped through her presentation to the first informational slide, anyway.

"There are many potential uses for various mushrooms and fungi, from a renewable building material to a catalyst that can break down powerful toxins," she said, staring at the wall behind Lyndin and saying the words like she was reading off a mental script. She was. She'd practiced a little in the mirror.

"But my preliminary research has been on the most common use, as food," she said.

That was about as far as she'd managed to practice, and she blinked after that, her voice suddenly going much quieter. "Um, they're very efficient because they don't require any light, unlike plants, and they mostly grow on waste materials."

She flipped to the next slide, a jumble of numbers.

"I've done some calculations on how much energy a harvest of mushrooms could save compared to traditional crops, and then the next slide is, um, what nutritional benefits they provide."

“Oh,” Lyndin said, maybe a bit more animated than he would have been if it were a presentation on Velenya. There, he might have sat quietly, taken some notes, nodded. His expression probably would have been less readable and he would have been silent while she gave her presentation.

But, here, he could see that she seemed a little nervous, so he put a bit more effort into being a supportive audience.

“That’s fascinating. I had no idea they could be used as a renewable building material. I don’t know if I would have thought something that broke down toxins and decomposed waste could be safely edible. The mushrooms back on Velencia were most certainly not safe to eat. I can see why you’re so interested in these. What are your thoughts on them as food, have you been eating them?”

"Oh, many species here are not edible, either," said Naeria, and the moment she dropped the script, she seemed to grow more animated all at once. The fastest way to break through her nerves, it turned out, was to get her talking about her favorite thing.

She wasn't completely relaxed. It was still Commodore Lyndin watching, and she knew that, but he seemed curious and so she'd answer his question.

"They can produce a wide variety of toxins, from deadly to hallucinogenic." She flipped a few screens ahead in her presentation, past some in-depth nutrition data, to show pictures of Death Caps, and Psilocybin, and her favorite, the first mushroom she'd ever found, the Fly Amanita. "I was thinking of doing some experiments with the possibilities of weaponizing them, as well."

She looked sheepish again, but flipped forwards to the next slide, which showed a cross section of a larger blaster, where parts seemed to be labeled as meant to copy the chemical structure of Psilocybin. It was too advanced for a Cadet, she knew that, but there it was, presented to Lyndin anyway.

At least, it was presented for a few seconds before she was flipping back to the nutrition facts.

"I've eaten them," she said, finally answering his actual question. "They're good. They've got a rich flavor, not unpalatable at all." She wasn't as interested in the different types of flavors available on Earth in the same way that some of the others were, but she knew that some things were easier to eat than others. "The edible ones are safe to eat raw for maximum efficiency, or they can be cooked into a variety of dishes."

A tiny smile twitched again onto his features, and he seemed to find enjoyment in her enthusiasm. He appreciated her passion and nodded along as she spoke, skimming the slides in her presentation as he absorbed the information.

“Naeria,” he said after a moment. “This is incredibly impressive work. You’ve outdone yourself with this quality. You’ve really tapped into something good, here. I can’t believe a single organic thing can have so many uses. Have you considered biological engineering or synthesis? Oh, I’m sorry. Don’t let me interrupt you, please go on. The topic is fascinating, you’ve most certainly gotten my attention. And not just on the mushrooms. This presentation is something I would expect in a professional council meeting. Believe me when I say I’ve had conferences with half as much work put into them.”

He sat still, and straight, but his eyes were fixed on the screen, alternating between it and her as she spoke. “Is there anything I can do to help aid you in your studies and development?”

He was excited about her research, and Naeria fed off of that excitement in turn. The high compliments of the Commodore had her blushing a shade of deeper purple, even as she murmured, "Biological engineering? Now that's something I hadn't considered," in the tone of voice of someone who was now very strongly considering it.

Then, he asked about something that wasn't mushrooms. He asked about her, about what she needed, and Naeria faltered.

Her eyes went wide again, owlish. She blinked. She lost her words for a second, and he was lucky that she was relaxed enough from his earlier comments that it only took her a few moments to find them.

"I just-" she swallowed. "I want to know. Is this what I'm supposed to be doing? Is this enough?"

She spoke slower now, but she managed it. "Enough that you won't be disappointed anymore? Enough that the others won't think I've forgotten the mission?"

She hoped so, because her love of Velencya was there in every meal this could provide, in every bit of energy that could be saved and used for something else. Any other discoveries she could make would be for Velencya, too.

Enough that you won't think I'm a burden? went unasked, as did a thousand other questions that had been swirling around in her mind over the last few months. Enough to buy us time?

Lyndin’s face remained soft while he watched her, like he could see the emotions she felt through her face no matter how she might have tried to hide it. He still seemed like he was ready to be encouraging, no matter what concerns or insecurities she might have.

“I think so,” he said easily. “It’s something that seems to have infinite possibilities. You’ve been here for a short while and already tapped into so much, I think there’s a real chance that you’re onto something important. I encourage you to keep up with your research on the topic, and let me know if you find anything interesting you want to share, or any projects you want to test. I can acquire whatever resources you need, hopefully, to aid you in your studies and development.”

There was something akin to an apology on his face, and he added, “I am sorry for how things went recently. Part of my disappointment lies in myself as well. I am proud of you for trying so hard, please don’t let any negativity undermine that. I think emotions were high. They can be very dangerous. But, I hope we can all learn and improve. I know you haven’t forgotten the mission, Naeria. It is easy to feel lost and overwhelmed on Earth, but you seem to have found a niche, and I want you to keep exploring it. Especially because it’s something you’re passionate about, and that means I know you’ll put your best efforts into your research. If that isn’t too much to ask? I don’t want to burden you with too much obligation or responsibility. Are you comfortable with that?”

He seemed patient, but curious, like there might have been more to his question. Like he was also considering something else underneath it all.

Naeria wasn't exactly sure what kind of reaction she'd been expecting, but she could tell that her body had tightened up in anticipation of it. Her back teeth were rubbing together. Her eyes felt hot.

Instead, Commodore Lyndin was still proud of her. He was kind, and supportive. He understood.

Beyond that, he was invested in her work, and she seemed to have convinced him of its importance. He was asking her to continue her research, to make this project that had taken up half of her brain for the past year into her main mission.

He wanted her to use mushrooms to save Velencya.

"Of course," she said, and she was quickly uncurling again and letting her shoulders drop away from her ears. "It's not too much. It's all I want. I want to keep exploring these new resources, and use what I find to make life better for our people."

A moment passed as she considered. "I might be need lab supplies if I am going to look into bioengineering, but I'll let you know specifics if I start that. So, yes. Yes, I'll keep working on this, as long as I can."

The pride was creeping back into her voice, and the passion.

The corners of his lips were turned up in a slight smile and he nodded encouragingly. “Make a list of what you need, do your research so we can make sure we get the best tools for the job. Don’t worry about expenses, I just need to know what to get.”

And, now that he could see her relaxing somewhat, he could do the same.

“Good, I’m glad to hear that. Although, that’s not the only extra responsibility I want to offer.” He gave her a moment to process, to let things sink in. “Would you be interested in a promotion or are you happy where you are now?”

Over the last few days, Naeria's mind had been full of nothing but preparation. She'd wanted her research to be accurate, and useful. She'd wanted her presentation to be perfect.

She hadn't wanted to fail. That was the thought that had been overrunning her mind. She hadn't thought any farther than that. She hadn't thought of any other possible outcomes that the meeting with Lyndin might come to. It would be awful, or she would get a polite nod from him and he would move on.

So, when he offered her a promotion, she froze. It wasn't from fear this time. It just took her a moment to process what he was saying.

"I-" she tried, and then sputtered, having to regroup her thoughts. "It could be useful to have the clearance to experiment with some of the weapons I was, um-" she clicked through to the diagram again, her voice fading to a mumble.

"If- If you think-"

Now she was blushing again.

“I was thinking the same. A lot of your research seems like it could benefit from having a little extra power behind it. And, I think you could handle it. I’ve taken a lot of time to think it over. I know it’s not traditional, it’s not how we’d do it on Velencya, but I’ve always had a good eye for when I thought someone was ready to take the next step. I think Earth complicates things, it’s forced a lot of you to grow very quickly. But, I’m proud of you.”

It wasn’t lip service; he met her eyes and it was clear that he meant it.

“I think it would be good for you, for your research, for the Vanguard. And,” he stood, and offered her a hand, “If you agree, I’d like to do it now. And then I’d like to hear the rest of your presentation, I’m already very interested.”

For a moment, Naeria's owlish yellow eyes met Lyndin's steely blue ones straight on. Then, she was glancing to the side again, but even as she did, she was smiling.

He thought she was ready.

Of course that single comment wasn't enough to completely erase all of her doubts. He thought she was ready by Earth standards, which he admitted were rushed, and she knew that there might be others that did not agree with his call.

She would try to prove herself, though, in her own quiet way. More than that, she would try to do whatever she could to help.

"I agree," she told him, and this time her voice did not tremble. "I'll do my best, Commodore. For Velencya."

There might be times when she would question him again but she would always be trying to save their home.

"And then, um. Yes. I can answer any questions you have about mushrooms."
