Recruitment into a secret organization had not been on Celestina’s mind at all when she had applied for her job at Romanos. The pay and benefits had been what drew her in, and the fact that she enjoyed the subjects that were taught there. She had been utterly thrilled to go into the Commendants office and be offered the job, and had been eager to agree to everything, but asking about the one clause in the contract, about joining with the Negaverse in order to work at the school? It…confused her.
And when she had asked.
When the big, imposing, well dressed man had seemed to become even bigger, and had become more imposing.
When is hand had gone into her chest, well. Celestina had been annoyed up until it started hurting. She thought it had been some sort of sexual assult, and it was unbelievable that it was starting the moment she got hired, workplaces could be toxic, but this was a bit much…
When the pain had begun to overwhelm her, when it slowly ebbed and turned into new strange feelings and strength...
Well. That had all been a different story.
The General King, as he called himself had summoned another person into the office, another General who had introduced himself as Lopezite, and that was how she had come to be here, in the park with this General Lopezite, still trying to take it all in.
“...I truly did not expect all of this when I submitted my application for the school. I hope that you’ll forgive my rudeness for not knowing how to respond to anything. I’m. He said that I’m to be called…Retzian while I’m…”
The Lieutenant gestured to herself, looking at the black and red clad General with utter bewilderment. “Like this.”

The recruitment process could be overwhelming for anyone, especially one done by a General King. Lopezite had time and patience; he’d jumped through these hoops before with new recruits, and he always seemed to enjoy the company.
“It isn’t rude,” he assured. “It’s a new thing, and it isn’t as if you had any training for this before your application. No one will be upset that you’re learning. It’s a lot to take in all at once. I remember when I was first brought in–and I wasn’t even applying for a job at the school. You should be proud, though. General King Lepidolite strikes me as a good judge of character, he was no doubt impressed with your resume.”
He walked slowly, making it easy for her to keep up.
“Lieutenant Retzian has a nice ring to it. And one day you’ll be Captain, and then General like me. But it comes in time, you don’t need to rush through anything. Are you more excited or worried about it all?”

“I just wish it would have been explained to me, you know? It’s a lot to deal with, and now I have to restructure everything knowing that there’s literally a secret army that I’m now a part of.”
Retzian couldn't deny that she wasn’t…at least somewhat excited though. It was something utterly new and completely unique, and it would allow her to showcase everything, which…was never a bad thing.
“Let me ask though, what’s with the jellyfish?” Her weapon appeared in her hand and she held it up, wiggling it so that the blue iridescent toy wriggled on its string. It was a pity that there were no cats around to torment with it, that seemed to be the only real use for such a thing.
“How am I supposed to protect myself with this? What am I supposed to do with it? Is my job to round up stray cats? I mean, it’s not the crappiest job I can think of for starting out doing something but, again…wish that had been communicated to me a little better.”

Lopezite laughed softly, a bit apologetically. “No, I’m sorry. It’s not the most conventional training tool, but we all have to start somewhere. Ideally you won’t be out fighting much, so you don’t need a very strong weapon. I can’t really understand how the weapons are decided for us–I had a decrepit old sword sheath when I first started. But,” he reached over his shoulder and placed the palm of his hand against the smooth metal hilt of his sword, and almost seemed affectionate towards it, “It doesn’t stay useless for long.”
He lowered his hand again and kept walking at his casual, easy-going pace.
“Some of the people who get recruited are a little too gung-ho early on. We don’t want them attacking the wrong person, or hurting themselves. It’s supposed to prepare you for what you’ll get when you get a little stronger. I got a sword after the sheath, and then this one. I’m sorry, I know it’s a lot at once. But if it’s any consolation, you won’t be alone. I’ll be here if you need anything. I’ll make sure you have my number, you can call any time.”

Retzian hummed and seemed to be trying to digest everything, though, the idea of this guy giving her his number it.
Ew.
Not that he didn’t seem nice it just. “Oh, I’m really not…into getting guys numbers if it’s all the same to you. I much prefer girls, but it’s somewhat of a relief to know that this won’t be a floppy jellyfish forever.”
He at least seemed to have been given something that he would know what to expect with his next weapon. “What will it even turn into?” Brandishing it again, letting the silky fabric wiggle in the air, Retzian sighed, unable to imagine anything. “I can understand not trusting younger people with it–like the kids at the school, I couldn’t imagine any of them holding a weapon…well. I haven’t met any yet but. Still. They’re kids. So that does make sense. But.”
She shrugged, continuing to follow him. “You really do seem to know what you’re doing.”

Lopezite slowed and one brow slowly raised. “...I like to think I know what I’m doing. I’ve been here for a while. BUt I think it’s important to clarify that I’m not hitting on you. I’m sorry if I gave you that impression. It was meant to be a gesture of friendliness. If you’d rather not take my number, I understand. I’d rather you be in the company of someone you were more comfortable with.”
He cleared his throat and continued, “I was thinking about asking Lavendulan to come in and help. She’s a Captain,” he explained. “She’s fused with a youma, so her powers are a little different than mine or yours, but she has my full support. She’s hard working, clever, creative. I think she’d be a good influence on you.”
…Especially if Retzian was worried about Lopezite hitting on her.
“She knows what she’s doing, too. She’s a fierce fighter, and a good friend. I’d like to introduce you two. You can trust her, she’s very loyal and very driven.”

Retzian wanted to make a protest, to let him know that it wasn’t him but it was just the whole fact of each time a male had her number for projects or work she had ended up with a wide array of unsolicited pictures that she would have much rather not had.
There was nothing pleasing about the genitalia of a male, at least not in her opinion. Still. Maybe when she knew him a bit more and could decide for herself that he wouldn’t do such a thing…but.
“I would appreciate that, and, what do you mean she’s fused with a youma? Just what is a youma?” That wasn’t something that she had heard of before and…how did one become fused with one?
“When can we meet, do you think? If she’s as good as you claim, I think that she and I will do quite nicely together.”

“I could probably ask her now,” he said, and pulled out his tablet so he could start out a message. “We’ve got time tonight, if that works for you?”
He suspected Lavendulan might have some free time, and he found himself eager to see her. It wasn’t that they didn’t keep in contact, but he was always glad to have a reason to want to see her. To remind he that he was proud of her, or to let her know that she was important to him.
And, if it would make Retzian feel better to have someone else there, he could work with that.
“Youma are…well, they look monstrous. Their starseeds have been damaged, so they can no longer take the full form of the human they were before. They’re completely loyal to Metallia. She’s not a full youma, she’s the product of what I suppose is an awakening gone wrong. She doesn’t look completely human. But that doesn’t make her any less than you or I, she’s just had some hardships that never should have happened. I think very highly of her. I hope you will, too.”

Retzian nodded, curious to know more about these youma, and had about a dozen questions on how starseeds could be damaged, and how this Lavendulan had an awakening which had gone wrong.
Surely it couldn’t have been from the General King who had brought her in, that…was a question to ask her, she supposed.
“Sure. I’m fine with meeting her tonight if you think she would be amenable.” Her free hand moved to the jellyfish on the end of the string and she tugged one of the tentacles almost absentmindedly. “It’s still a lot to take in, but bring it on. It will be good to meet someone who’s out of the ordinary, especially when you trust them. Better to meet her now than when I’m on my own and might say something stupid.
Not that she thought she would but.
Anything was possible.
