It was close to dawn when they arrived on Malus. Soft, pastel pinks and blues and purples were already lighting up the sky; the moon was still high above them, and it always seemed full and kept things bright. An aurora danced in the sky, swirling in the same colors as the dawn. It was disappearing with the rising sun, but for now it was still easy to see.
Tall mountains in the distance were dark against the sky, but the peaks were already glowing golden from the sunrise. The snow covered peaks glistened like fire opals.
The trees around them were similar to those on Earth, only the bark seemed like it had opalized, and instead of green leaves, there were thin, icicle like glass needles that tinkled like chimes when the wind blew through.
Other trees had pale white leaves, and soft, pastel colored flowers. Tall white grass swayed around them. In the distance, a stream trickled.
On the hill above them, some sheep were already nibbling away. A few were still asleep, or looked like they were dozing as they nibbled on the tall grass.
“Here we are,” Malus said proudly, eyes already on the sheep. Though the sun hadn’t yet risen enough to properly illuminate everything, it looked like the sheep’s wool sparkled a bit when it caught the light, as if tiny diamonds had been sprinkled atop them. He’d brought a backpack, full of the promised food, and a few things for the sheep.
Who hadn’t even seemed to notice them.
Some of them were large enough to go up to his hip, but a few were still small–probably babies, themselves.
Even from here, it was clear to see how cute and round they all were.

Mary was still more than a little disappointed that she hadn’t been able to take Daphne up to visit her own homeworld, but she was excited to visit Malus on his, though there had been a moment of dread mixed with a bit of panic when they had held hands and she was almost more than convinced that they wouldn’t be able to go, that she was cursed or something that…
She simply wasn’t allowed to go to space anymore because she was such a useless senshi.
Luckily, Mary’s fears were quickly put at rest when they did indeed end up in space and…oh it was lovely.
Drawing in a breath, the senshi looked around, her eyes wide with curiosity and wonder. “Malus! Malus this is your world? Oh it’s so pretty! Malus this is amazing!”
When her eyes landed on the sheep she gasped. “They’re so round! Malus! Malus they’re so fluffy! Malus…oh Malus I love them! Are they really mean? They look like something you’d dream up!”

Malus couldn’t help but laugh; her enthusiasm was contagious, but he couldn’t help but huff. “I wouldn’t lie! Trust me, I want more than anything to be able to go over there and pet them. They look like the softest thing I’ve ever seen. It’s not fair that you can’t touch them. Ah,” he sighed, frustrated and endeared by the sheep.
One of them was chewing lazily, squinting at them in the dim light of the rising sun.
“They get really snippy if you get too close. But then, I’ve never really been around farm animals so I don’t know if there’s something I should be doing. I didn’t mean to spook them before. But I brought a bunch of treats–apples, lettuce. Grapes, carrots. Half the stuff the internet recommends. I don’t know if they’re like Earth sheep at all though, so I don’t want to poison them. But. I really want them to like me. At the very least, it would be great if they could trust me. And listen to me when I say “Hey, stay on this hill, it might not be safe elsewhere. Although, the good news is that it doesn’t look like they're strayed too far since the last time I was here, this is about where they were last time, too.”

“Well…let's see if they’re more friendly today, yeah? I mean the worst that happens is we get nibbled on or chased a little, and one good thing about still being a chibi is that I’m pretty fast, so…” Mary shrugged and kept her eyes on the sheep, drawing out a bag of her own treats that she had brought. “If they’re not like earth sheep, but…”
She hummed and shook her head. “They look a lot like earth sheep, and I can’t see the food we brought hurting them…what are they eating over there? Just grass?” Beginning to walk slowly towards the sheep, Mary gave Malus an eager smile. “Come on, let’s try to introduce ourselves. They’ll have to get used to people anyway, sheep can’t just be wild, I mean, at least earth sheep, they’re dependent on people to get the wool off. I might have to read up on shearing sheep if that’s the case with these! They look as though they’re already ready for it, to be honest!”
Mary wanted…needed to hug one…right now. Or she might just explode.

“You might be fast but that doesn’t mean I am!” Malus huffed, but it wasn’t with any real agitation; he seemed excited, but nervous, and sucked in a great breath.
“I think it’s just grass. But–be careful,” he insisted. “I don’t know anything about shearing sheep, is that something they need? I mean, these sheep weren’t even here the last time I was here–I mean, before they showed up. I don’t know where they were before, or how long their wool has been growing.”
He began to walk towards them with careful, hesitant steps. Some of the sheep were looking at them already, and while their faces were cute, they looked completely unimpressed with them. Defensive, even. “I hope they like you more than they like me. Maybe they’ll be nicer if they know they have a guest to behave for.”

“I mean, if they’re anything like earth sheep, they don’t shed their wool on their own, earth sheep were bred selectively for that purpose, like, a long time ago they would just drop their wool like cats and dogs shed in the summer, or at least that’s how I read it, but…you know how humans can be greedy. They could make wool into clothing so worked to make it so the sheep just…grew it and grew it. Anyway, if you don’t cut off a sheep's wool, it can get massive and they can suffocate from it eventually. It’s crazy! I’ve seen a few youtube videos of these sheep that got lost? Anyway it takes ages to sheer them…”
She kept her voice soft and even, and though she was talking to Malus, her eyes were on the sheep, carefully watching them in case they did decide to attack. “How about we just sit down here, we’re close enough that they’ve seen us, and if they want to come over they can, but…we’re no threat, and I think stopping here will assure them of that…”
Before taking a seat, Mary plucked some of the funny looking weeds out of the grass and shoved them into her subspace pocket to keep them out of the way for now. They didn’t seem like they’d be to comfortable to sit on, and when she was comfortable, she pulled out the treats that she had brought for the sheep, laying them in her lap and turning back to Malus. “So! You said they weren’t here before? Where were they?”

Malus tilted his head a bit as he looked at her. “You really did do your sheep research.” He sounded impressed, and took a seat a few feet away from her.
The sheep were watching them, but it didn't seem like any had been inspired to investigate. Now that the two Senshi were sitting down the sheep could see that they didn't seem to pose much of a threat--and now they were watching them for a different reason.
Two meandered a little closer but still kept a significant distance. They were bristly, but they were curious.
"I don't know where they were before," Malus explained. "I mean, I don't know if they were always here on the world and just decided to come out somewhere I could see them, or..."
He shrugged. "I know a lot of Senshi who said the same thing--that one day they just had bugs or animals or something, after them not being there before. But a few months ago there was this big space explosion, so I don't know. I've heard rumors. Nothing concrete. I just know that they're here now. Have you noticed anything about your world that's changed recently?"

Mary shook her head, keeping an eye on the sheep even as she turned to give most of her attention to Malus, or at least, seemed to do so. “I’ve only been up there once, and that was with Soleiyu, there wasn’t anything up there but us, I don’t think…it was actually pretty nice to just lay in the grass and not worry about getting eaten alive by bugs and all that but…it was also dark out so, I didn’t get a very good view of much.”
Her hands absently continued to pluck the strange looking weeds just to give them something to do, and she shrugged. “I’m kind of hoping that I get some sheep too…that would be…kind of lame to be the senshi of sheep and not even get any to take care of, you know? As for doing my research, of course I did. This…” She wasn’t the best at her job but…she was going to be better. For Soleiyu, for Daphne. For herself.
“This is going to be my new passion, I think.”

Malus nodded; he glanced at her as she played with the weeds, and it looked as though he wasn’t the only one who had earned her interest. A nearby sheep had been interested in eating its own supply of grass, but now it thought that hers looked so much better. So, the sheep bumbled a little closer, and then a little closer, and then it was just staring at her expectantly. Waiting.
It made a soft, impatient bleating noise and stomped its foot a little.
Some of the other sheep were watching, and Malus was watching; his eyes darted between the shee and Mary because he didn’t want her to get hurt, but–
The sheep was just staring at weeds.
“Um. Yeah, I–yeah, I’d be curious to see…you know, what you can…make of things here,” he said as softly as he could. He didn’t want to agitate the sheep when they finally seemed interested in something other than biting.
