Adjusting to life within Belrean society may have proven challenging if Asa had been allowed out of the house. The iceling had thus far been confined to his bed apart from a few visits he’d made to clinics around the city; always well supervised, of course. His condition was tenuous at best with a fair mixture of good days to balance out the bad and for that he considered himself blessed. For much of his trip into Belrea he hadn’t been cognizant enough to remember major details, but at the very least now he was able to help with his sons’ studies and converse with Ygraine when she wasn’t working. He owed much to the Talean they’d hired to look after him during their journey and who continued to look after Asa’s wellbeing. Without him the burden would have bene placed squarely on Ygraine’s shoulders and at the very least having Uquin’s family around provided a welcome distraction to Asa’s young sons.
Nothing could take the worry from Ygraine’s eyes, but little steps were better than none.
Today was one of his better days and Asa had decided that today he was going to do something very stupid.
Today he was going to go out of the house.
Asa dressed himself and unhappily noted that his belt had to be synched tighter than the last time he’d gone out. Still, that didn’t stop him and the frail iceling peered around the corner. Ygraine was out, the boys were in classes, Uquin was on the job…So that meant it was ‘safe’, right? Taking as deep a breath as he could, Asa started to slip down the hall, down the stairs and was very nearly on his way to the door.

Uzumati was adjusting to Belrea the best that he could. Ever since agreeing to visit Padma's family across the ocean the man had been on edge. It had been one thing to leave the comforts of his forest home, the man knowing every tree and every scent like the back of his hand, but it was another thing to fly across the ocean on an airship into a land full of buildings and crowded with people. The signs were confusion scribbles to Uzumati, there were no true markers in a land of brick and stone and nothing could breath inside of the crowded area. He especially could not breath as he tried to figure out the attire of the local people, the bronze buttons on the collar leading up towards his throat making his fingers sore as he fiddled with them. And whether it was a trick or not his son had left him with something known as a...neck cloth or tie? Uzumati glared at it like bloody murder before accidentally ripping one of the buttons from his shirt, a stressed noise of frustration leaving his lips before he tossed the button across the room. Said button decided that instead of simply taking its punishment and laying flat on the ground it would roll and continue to roll out of the doorway and towards the hallway where it connected with a boot.
Uzumati of course had thought the house was mostly empty and so whenever he opened the door to chase down the button the man found himself freezing, his wild green gaze widening at the sight of an iceling in his relative's home. They had just arrived yesterday in Belrea so the man hadn't been warned about other company and he found himself completely baffled by the sight of the foreigner. Of course he was probably more so the scary one with his mess of hair, half tied back as he had given up on that while fighting with his shirt which was half buttoned with one sleeve rolled up and the other haphazardly down towards his elbow. At least he had his pants on even though that was it without any shoes or well anything else really.

Asa wasn’t unused to the sounds of other’s in Uquin’s family rowhouse. It wasn’t a small home by any means, though to someone of Asa’s birth It may as well have been a cabin, and while everyone had a little space of their own with so many it felt cramped. Once Uquin’s older children – at least, those with his current wife – had moved out the space felt more open and yet Asa still felt himself on edge padding around the small, wooden halls. Once he was well enough he planned on moving his family into a space of their own, but until then he was just happy to have this.
Still, the addition of others came with it’s own set of awkward obstacles and the sound of frustrations, followed by something hitting his boot caught Asa’s attention. He’d been in the process of bending down to pick it up when he looked up and caught the eye of a beast. Asa couldn’t help the way his heart rate picked up. Seeing the disheveled leafling reminded him of coming across a predator in the wilds with Ygraine and like the prey he was Asa had no idea how to react.
“Pardon, but does this belong to you?” Asa rose slowly, never looking away from Uquin and cautiously held up the button.

The foreigner was speaking calmly as if it was normal for him to be inside of the house. The very question made Uzumati's hackles lower, mostly from confusion, and he tried to ponder the situation. Padma's father was a healer so maybe this was a client? Was that possible? Either way his gaze narrowed sharply at the sight of the cursed button. That wretched, constricting thing. Uzumati found himself reaching out for the button, perhaps seeming a bit too intense in his anger, and while the wrath was intended for the button it may have seemed like he was actually reaching out to strike the stranger before pulling back with the damned button in his hand instead.
A sigh left his lips before he raised his gaze from the tiny bronze object, his open shirt showing its battle wounds with the hanging threads where the button belonged. Now what did he do? Even more so...who was this foreigner and why was he here? Uzumati frowned as he studied the iceling. the question obvious in his gaze as he simply stared with the button clutched in his fist.

Asa braced himself. He wasn’t in any position to fight against the much burlier Talean, but if need be he could use his magic to defend himself. Still, he’d hate to damage Uquin’s home and it wasn’t as if he’d never been struck before so if he just endured it –
and he was just taking the button.
Blinking a few times to clear his mind, Asa straightened and felt his shoulders relax a little. “You’re Padma’s husband? Uzumati, I think?” Not much of a talker, but that didn’t excuse Asa from being rude. “Uquin told me your family was coming to visit. My name is Asa; for the time being I’m staying here with my own family until we can get better adjusted.” Hopefully that would be enough not get him punched. Still, looking at the button caused Asa’s brow to furrow. “Would you like some help?”

"Mmm." Uzumati nodded at the question. So this wasn't an invader after all. It was strange but the last person he had expected to run into here was a foreigner from Zena. He had fought with one before, mostly training together in his younger years but that seemed like forever ago. He had only seen more Zenans when he was getting ready to fly to Belrea on the airship and that was simply because the area had been full of all sorts of foreigners looking to travel. Not all of them seemed so....frail. Uzumati's gaze swept over Asa thoughtfully before the next question caused his whole expression to shifter, an almost hopeful feeling showing in his gaze as he stared back at Asa.
"Please." If raising children with Padma had taught him anything it was the importance of that strange word. If the stranger - no Asa - was willing to help then that would be a relief to Uzumati. However, there was a slight issue....Uzumati's cheeks darkened slightly as he motioned for Asa to follow him into the room. It was a complete and total massacre of shirts with missing buttons...unless the iceling could sew then perhaps it would be best if they found a new shirt. Uzumati doubted anything from the iceling would fit him but maybe they could find one somewhere else?

Asa’s expression softened and he nodded with a little sigh. It didn’t seem as if he would be getting out of the house today, but at the very least he wasn’t trapped in his bed. “Very well then.” He clasped his hands in front of him as he walked, posture far more graceful than he felt, eyes taking in as much as he could about the man before him and more so about the mess he was being walked into. The sight caused Asa’s brows to raise to his hairline though he gave no other indication of surprise.
Goddess preserve us.
“Belrean clothing is a bit of a hassle, isn’t it?” Instead of judging the other man, Asa simply offered a calming smile and took stock of the pile before him. As he looked over the garments Asa’s right hand slipped up his left sleeve and produced a small, ornate case. With a little tug on a leather binding strap he revealed small embroidery kit. “Would you rather keep the shirt you have on or did you want me to fix one of the others instead?”

It was only....four or five shirts he had ripped? Uzumati winced as he watched the iceling enter the room. The frail man seemed so elegant in comparison to the burly brute who had managed to destroy the room within minutes of being left alone by his family. He had hoped to surprise them by appearing all proper for tonight's dinner but so far his efforts were in vain. How was it someone like Asa made it seem so easy and natural? His gaze did widen in surprise by the supportive statement, his gaze shifting guiltily towards the scattered clothing before Uzumati nodded with a sigh. It truly was a hassle. He was so used to just wearing whatever was needed to survive the elements, not what would appease the public. Why did others worry about such silly things?
A small smile crossed his lips in turn as Asa smiled towards him. Uzumati pursed his lips thoughtfully before glancing around at the shirts. They had all fit in different ways but the less restrictive one was the one that he had been currently wearing, hence his true distress over losing the button on it. After a thoughtful moment he raised his arms, the man tugging the shirt off before holding it out towards the iceling. Thankfully he had at least bathed before trying on all the shirts so while his attire and hair was a hot mess Uzumati was actually clean for once, the variety of scars and the claw necklace he had kept on the only things really standing out against his darker skin.

Asa delicately removed his outer coat and folded the garment before setting it atop an unused surface. While it wasn’t unusual for him to wear multiple layers within the home – as he was now, in fact- it didn’t feel proper to keep his outer garb on while mending shirts.
“This one then.” He needn’t tell the man he could have kept it on now that he’d already stripped. Goddess, he was a scarred one, wasn’t he? In passing he’d heard his host family speak of Padma’s spouse as unique but Asa had always assumed he had a penchant for odd trinkets or a lisp. Feral wasn’t among them, but he wasn’t ill hearted and that bode well.
Shifting some of the other shirts to the side, Asa perched himself on the edge of the bed and spread the shirt across his lap. With thin, nimble fingers the iceling got to work replacing the button. As he worked Asa’s eyes drifted across the space and saw the necktie as well which caused him to give Uzumati a sidelong glance. It seemed his work wasn’t so simple after all. “Would you like some help with the necktie as well? I could use the practice. My sons are attending classes while we’re here and they’re sure to have events soon.” When he’d finished with the repair, Asa lifted the garment and looked it over. A little wrinkled from his tugging, but otherwise just fine. “Here you are; try it on.”

Uzumati watched Asa like the man was performing some sort of strange magic. Padma mended clothing plenty of times before but Uzumati rarely had the chance to truly watch the process. Often he was out hunting or repairing something around their forest home, not simply sitting to the side while she mended something. He had honestly been expecting them to need to go pick up a brand new shirt but it was a relief to see that Asa could repair the thing. It had been so quick! Maybe there was some benefit to being so small after all? Uzumati nodded before taking the shirt and carefully lifting it over his head, the earthling tugging it down until it was somewhat straight and in place around his chest even if it was slightly snug across the shoulders.
His gaze swept towards the necktie and Uzumati made a face. He was supposed to wear it with this thing. While he didn't think he could endure the full getup for the entire trip he would at least make it through tonight. So with a small sigh, Uzumati nodded before sitting down on the edge of the bed across from Asa. "How?" He asked quietly as he picked up the necktie and dangled it from his fingertips with curiosity. It looked more like a hunter's trap than anything else which made him super wary to wear it.

Asa smoothed his tunic down as he stood and adjusted his collar before stepping closer to Uzumati. If the man truly meant him hard he would have done so before now so he didn’t see the risk in reaching out to help straighten his attire. The Zenan tugged it down in some places, straightened Uzu’s own collar and instructed him on how to properly tuck the Belrean shirt. While it wasn’t something that was done in Tendaji the Belreans were a stickler for it, and if the lady of the house was anything to go on he knew it would be important here.
Since the other man was sitting it was easier for Asa to take the necktie into his hands and loop it loosely over the other man’s shoulders. “It always goes under the collar, just like this.” He draped it just under the lapels, making sure his steps were slow so Uzumati could watch. “Then you loop it, over and under, with the smaller end underneath.” He’d only had cause to learn a few times, but Asa found comfort in tradition. So, tying a tie was little work for the Zenan and in no time he had Uzumati looking as dapper as any Valmon gentleman. “And that’s that~”

It was strange having someone tuck his clothing in around him and Uzumati was struggling to stay still. He swallowed a few times, his fingers curling up and relaxing over and over until the process was finally done. It felt like he had been still for an eternity just to get a shirt settled. If only he knew how much of a hassle the tie would be! Uzumati let out a huff as Asa worked with the necktie, his nose scrunching up in distaste at the complexity of the thing. "A trap." He muttered with protest before standing up once Asa was finished with him. His hair was still a mess but Uzumati reached over for a comb that was laying nearby and started tearing through his mane of hair, the tangles quickly coming undone before being twisted back into a ponytail.
He made a face though at the stranger being reflected in a nearby mirror before glancing back at Asa. "Good?" He asked with curiosity. Even though he appreciated the foreigner's help the man was still very disgruntled by this whole ordeal. Now that he was dressed like this did that mean he had to also endure going outside and seeing how the rest of the Belrean city worked? He was so very new to this whole thing after all.

Asa let out a little chuckle. “Fashion can seem that way, can’t it?” For a moment the Zenan thought he’d truly made a difference…until Uzumati started tearing through his hair and Asa’s heart got caught in his throat. Goddess, it was like watching Arden try to dress himself as a toddler. All stubbornness and pride with no sense of self-preservation.
“Almost.” Moving about the space, Asa picked through the available wardrobe until he found a vest. Someone had obviously picked it out for Uzumati because the colors would compliment his complexion quite nicely, but there was still something off about it. Taking a crystal broach from his own attire, Asa pinned it to the breast pocket before handing it to the leafling. “Put this on and then you’ll be ready.”

Fashion. Uzumati felt like he could honestly hate that word. It truly was such a hassle! Still he was thankful that Asa was patient and helping him through this whole ordeal. It was much more patience than he would expect from his own relatives who still gave him strange looks half the time. He really didn't fit in and even Uzumati recognized that which was why he was trying so hard this trip. Even if it was only for a moment he would try to look fashion ready.
He made a face whenever Asa alluded to something else being needed. He had a shirt and pants...maybe shoes? But no, it was more clothing. Uzumati let out a soft sigh under his breath before taking the vest from the iceling. At least it wasn't as constrictive as the other attire. Uzumati carefully slipped it on before glancing down at the crystal broach. Was it okay for him to take that? His expression shifted warily towards Asa. Still, now that he was ready the man seemed to be asking now what? He was dressed up and it was far from evening...he didn't feel like sitting still for the rest of the afternoon either. "Take a walk?" He offered after a thoughtful moment, his gaze skimming over Asa. Wasn't he also dressed to go outside?

“If you don’t mind being my escort I would appreciate it.” He shouldn’t be as tired as he was, but often Asa’s body held a lingering ache. While his physicians warned against staying in bed extended periods of time he also wasn’t in the position to move about as freely as he liked. He’d hoped to get further along than he had today, but his sneaking had already cost him a bit and now he was wondering if a good book might have been a better option.
Still, it wasn’t often that he was in company that didn’t know of his condition. He hadn’t gotten any concerned glances from Uzumati yet nor any admonishments about how much he should do or questions about his breathing. And if Ygraine found out he’d left wouldn’t she feel better if he wasn’t alone?
Asa walked over to his outer garb and unfolded it once again before slipping it over his thin shoulders. “Uquin mentioned you’re a father? How many children do you have, Uzumati?”
