Summer was such a magnificent season, more so during the transition months when the heat has reached record-breaking numbers when compared to the previous year. It was that perfect temperature out. Mid to high eighties in the sun, add a nice breeze and some shade and the weather felt absolutely perfect. The nights weren’t all that horrible either with fewer rainy evenings and mostly open sky, perhaps a few small clouds, but otherwise clean enough to view the stars and in some places, she could even see the milky way.

Definitely beat having to sleep in various office spaces in the Dark Kingdom.

Xyla had been taking a much needed, and well deserved, cat nap in a sunspot beneath a willow tree when something strangely other stirred her from her slumber. A feeling hard to describe as it wasn’t something that could be sensed by any normal powered being as there was no aura attached to it. Rather the potential of such a strength was what drew her out of the pleasant dream she’d been having.

Brilliantly golden eyes scanned the nearby area where mothers with children passed by casually; an afternoon stroll just after lunchtime but perhaps before naps. A small group of teenagers was in an open area set back beyond the concrete pathway, chasing around and kicking a soccer ball just for the fun of it since no goal had been set up. There were dogs on leashes, most of which paid her no mind with the exception of an Australian Shepard which caused her ears to lay flat against her head in warning if it came too close.

After some time the feeling that tugged her interest felt like it was fading and so she set her gaze upon the backs of anyone walking away from her until her eyes settled on a young man with dark purple hair done up in tight corkscrew coils and vibrant violet-colored eyes to match. A handsome young man that was likely not much older than 17, splitting from the group. From the distance she was at, Xyla thought she heard someone ask about water, but couldn’t be sure if that was why he was leaving.

She rose, rolling her shoulders she stretched, claws digging into the earth beneath her as she arched her back, tail lolling from side to side until the last remnants of sleep had left her.

For the next hour she had followed him at a distance, not really bothering to hide her presence; which might have been a mistake but she didn’t want to lose sight him. When he went into buildings where she could not follow, Xyla waited outside patiently in a shaded area for him to re-emerge.

In the moment of idle observation, she pulled from her Subspace a silver pen with a blue crystal tip which was opened up into a tablet that was laid out in front of her where curious eyes could not see. A message was sent to Axinite, a request for the company and possible aid to recruiting a new abled body into their ranks.

Quote:
Axinite, my General King.

It is of my firm and honest belief that the Castle is too dark and dreary of a place for such a beautiful day. Spare me a moment without delay and I am certain you will find a reason to stay. A new recruit I might have found. But I need your voice to bring him around.

The door opened after she had sent the coordinates to her current location. Street lights had turned on even though it was still partially light out and she hoped that the Sovereign might show up as a civilian if able as to not draw in any unwanted attention. His uniform might be passable as formal attire for a military function and she could at least dampen his signature if necessary. But for now, she felt it necessary to try to keep the boy from wandering too far from where she had told Axinite they’d be.

Her pen was stowed away in her subspace pocket as she lept graceful from her perch and approached the young man; circling around his feet she brushed against him, tail wrapping around the side of his leg. Intelligent yellow-moonlit eyes looked up at him, a knowing grin, a friendly face to let him know she was friendly and worthy of whatever attention he might bestow upon her.

Tried to set a scene where he was enjoying one of the hobbies listed on his profile. Let me know if anything needs changing.

Everest was in the park playing soccer, enjoying his last week of summer before school starts back up. He loved school, but there was nothing quite like midday soccer matches in the park. He and his friend played until the heat became to much for them and they decided to head indoor for some air-conditioning. They spent some time in an arcade near the park, playing video games and stuffing themselves with junk before heading out, going their separate ways and promising to meet up for the movies the next day.

Everest had to go do several errands, getting a few more things for the school year and finally ending his day at the bookstore. He realized going in that he was sure he spotted a cat seemingly nearby several times that day. When he came out though, the cat seemed ready to greet him and Everest laughed.

He spoke in french, not expecting the cat to understand him, but saying, "my you are lovely? Are you lost?"

He knelt down looking into his bag to see if he had any snacks left and frowned, speaking in English this time, "all I have is cupcakes and chocolate isn't very good for cats, but I can certainly offer a few ear scratches." He reached out to let the cat sniff his hand.

"Someone must be looking for you ... Ive never seen a cat quite like you?"

“That would be me, thank you,” Justice answered, from just a few yards aside. He looked like he’d been walking briskly–no doubt with an effort not to draw much attention to himself. Like this, he looked unassuming enough; he was of average height and slight build, and had a tired, gentle look about him. He was dressed nicely, and clearly had taken efforts to appear presentable and put together.

He smiled at Xyla knowingly.

“She doesn’t usually like strangers. To be honest, I’m a bit surprised. There must be something special about you.” He extended his hand in greeting. “I’m Justice, and this is Xyla. She’s got a knack for finding the good ones.”

Xyla could not bring herself to meow up at him like an actual cat and instead settled on purring loudly as she bumped her head against the young man’s hand; thoroughly enjoying the attention he offered her so freely. Oh how she’d much enjoy sharing these cupcakes he had mentioned having but a voice answered his curious musings. One that had the black-tipped ears atop her head swiveled at the familiar sound she had been hoping would come to find her.

Axinite- or rather… Justice as he had introduced himself.

A swell of pride bloomed inside her at his praise and she looked up at him with intelligent golden-colored eyes and the most Cheshire-like grin. She leaned against the boy’s leg and then dutifully trotted over to the Sovereign’s side.

Weaving between his feet, Xyla circled behind him then sat beside his left foot, her long black and blue striped tail curled around an ankle claiming him as hers even if the truth of the matter was more the other way around; unbound of course since she dare not follow Justice home nor nap in Axinite’s office uninvited simply because the mood struck her. Someday she would have a team of her own and with that a place to call home where she would be welcome.

Perhaps this young man would be the start of it. At least she hoped he would since the days have been quite lonely as of late.

Everest enjoyed petting the cat chuckling at her purring before he looked up at the voice that proclaimed the cat to be his and the cat, Xyla, went over to her owner.

Everest smirked and nodded, "I don't know about special, but I'm honored." He chuckled again and looked to the cat. "It nice to meet you both, she is quite beautiful ... assez charmant," he said switching to French, calling her quite lovely.

"I've never seen a cat quite like her, I'm really glad she isn't lost. It's starting to get late, and it wouldn't be so nice if animal control grabbed her up."

Everest looked to the streetlights that flicked to life as the summer day was drawing to a close and sun was trying to slip below the horizon. "Well, it was nice to meet you Mr. Justice, but it's getting late, and I've got to get home. Goodnight Xyla."

Justice didn’t move; the little smile on his face was pleasant enough, but there was something thoughtful in his expression. “I think I see what Xyla does. I wouldn’t want anything to happen to her. Or you, actually. You seem like you have a kind heart. This city has a way of finding people like you, and hurting them.”

He glanced around; it had been a while since he’d been out here, like this.

Justice was always careful with his identity. He wouldn’t have approached in this form without good reason. If he had to power up, it was probably safe. Xyla would warn him if she felt anyone’s energy signature.

“I don’t want to keep you long, not if you’re on your way home, but. It does get dangerous at night. You might doubt that there’s something special about it, but Xyla’s got very good instincts. And, so do I. It would be reckless of me to let you go without at least telling you that you’re not meant for mediocrity. If I told you I could help you unlock your full potential, would you at least hear me out?”

He could have waited to be told no, or for the boy to leave, but he didn’t want to waste time if they were on a limited schedule, anyway.

Justice powered up, into General King Axinite, in what must have looked like a flurry of magic. He nodded to Xyla, because a talking cat really did seal the deal when you were trying to tell someone that they were actually a magical warrior.
