A full moon was rising in the sky by the time that Mina had developed her plan. The warm wind that rolled in from the surf pulled her hair around her shoulders and brushed against the edges of her mask. It was a small thing, barely covering half of her face, but it was enough to hide her facial structure. At least, she hoped.
She'd told herself that she was going to wait until she was old enough to branch out into the world and fight. Had she? Absolutely not! If she'd waited much longer then Mina would have grown into the reef and become just as stuck as her parents. So, with her best friend at her side, she'd traveled to Matori aboard a vessel she could just barely afford.
The young Hapuna had only been in the area for a night before she'd decided to branch out. At first the night was quiet, as it should be, but inevitably she'd found a few small time thugs trying to steal from the dock. With a snap of her whip they turned her way and Mina caught sight of three very angry, very large Matorians.
She maybe...should have thought this through better but....Well, here she was!
"It's late to still be working. Shouldn't you three be in bed?"
"Shouldn't you?" One snickered. "Go on home, girly; if you know what's good for ya."
Mina readied her whip. "No can do; I'm just too invested!"
While one remained with the goods, the others gave out loud cries and charged.

When Oly had gone into town that day, he hadn't been planning to stay out for so long. Dinner with an old friend to catch up, lingering at the tavern, taking a nap from being a lightweight... Well, it had turned into a much longer evening than he had intended.
He sat at the tavern after waking up with two cups; cold water and steaming cup of.. the bartender called it a hangover special. Something to make sure he was more alert before he headed home. The hot drink tasted like dirt and oil... but it was certainly perking him up. By the time he finished, he was able to walk upright without feeling dizzy. In fact, he felt pretty good!
Good enough and confident enough that he was willing to investigate the noise coming from the nearby dock. Oly took a moment to absorb what he was seeing in the moonlight, then walked closer and hollered out. "Whoa, whoa, fellas! Calm down before someone gets hurt!" It looked pretty silly, some group of guys fighting in the dark...

Mina didn't have nearly as much experience fighting thugs as she liked to believe.
Bullies? Of course! Harsh words and criticism? She could deflect those with ease! Actual weapons? That was scary! She dodged a hard left hook with ease, but barely avoided having her side cut by the blade of a passing scimitar. She gasped and used the momentum of her spin away to snap out with her whip and feeling vilified with the tip snapped against his skin.
The nimble Hapuna jump up to avoid having her feet swept out from under her and landed atop a crate. For a moment she sent her whip out, snapping it at anyone she came close to - all four of them in fact! Wait, four?
Weren't there just three to start out with?
She heard some kind of talking but honestly above the noise of the fight Mina didn't catch much. "Sorry if I hit you!" She called out. "Unless you're with them! In that case just-" She sent a kick to the chest of a man trying to get close to her, "-stay down!"

Sorry? Ah, so that was the good guy. Or good girl? When the clouds moved enough to let the moonlight spotlight her on the crate.. Well, the woman looked nothing short of impressive and Oly was briefly awestruck. Then her words really sank in. If he was with them? It was all of them against her?
One of the men turned and sneered. "Unless you wanna end up in the same hole that this girl's going to be in soon, I suggest you move on, boy, and forget you saw us."
Oly's brow rose. Oh, so that was how it was. He may have been small, but he had been working on making certain that he wasn't someone to be messed with. Sure he was still a work in progress, but this was a good chance to test how far that progress had actually taken him! "How about you creeps move on instead?" He easily dodged the fist that came at his face, stepped in and snapped his own fist up under the bigger guy's jaw.

Mina's hair caught on a stray ocean breeze and fanned out around her, giving the girl a perfect dramatic flare that she might have appreciated more if the fight were already over. As it was she was slightly out of breath, blood was thrumming in her veins at terminal velocity and she was trying really hard not to let her nervousness show.
Oh! So he was on her side then! Now that was something she could work with~
Mina spun in a circle with her whip and by the grace of the spirits managed to use the momentum to snap it once more at her attacker. This time the man was expecting it, though. He stepped back with a triumphant look on his face...only to step off the decking and fall straight into the water with a scream.
It wasn't her most graceful win, but she'd take it!
"Pretty hard to dig holes on a dock, or were you playing pretend? Maybe you can show me how good you dig from your cell. I'm sure the guards would love to see it!"

Oly stood over the man he'd punched with a snarl on his lip; partly in anger against the man and partly against himself. Just because he could punch didn't mean he necessarily enjoyed it. Outside of a few scuffles, any fighting he'd done had been in training up to that point. The stranger was clearly seeing stars, but Oly pointed anyway. "It's better that you don't get up. Get it?"
Thudding feet made his head snap up. The third man was attempting an attack from behind the girl. "Hey!" He charged forward with a hard kick of his legs and tackled into the assailant. Could Oly throw a punch? Heck yeah! Was he still a scrawny amateur? Oh, yes. He connected with the third man, but the bigger man was only slightly knocked off course. Still, the pair stumbled safely by the woman warrior and wobbled toward the edge of the dock.
Of course, that only worked until the bigger guy realized how much bigger he actually was. Oly let out a yelp of surprise when he was suddenly lifted off his feet. "Look out!" he called out, disoriented but able to tell that he was about to be thrown somewhere.

For a moment Mina was so wrapped up in making sure the man she'd knocked over the dock didn't drown to notice the third. When she turned toward the younger man's shout she almost thought he was going to hit her! Was it a double cross?!
Thank the waters it wasn't! She jumped out of the way with a yelp and took a minute to catch her bearings. Of course that was all it took for her partner to get snatched up, and that just wouldn't stand! Mina cracked her whip at an angle and waited until it coiled around their assailant's calf before pulling back with all of her strength. Was she the strongest? Not in the least. Still, the surprise of it and the pull at a weaker spot brought him down.

Oly managed to have the frame of mind to grab the bigger guy's arm as he flailed about with his other limbs to keep himself from being thrown too much. Instead of going to the side though, he suddenly felt his momentum going down!
He dropped and bounced off off the thug's body with a gasp of air. As quickly as he could though, he got his feet under him and spun to slam his fist down and bring the confrontation to an end. After making sure the thug was simply unconscious, he stood up and stretched his arms out in front of him. First was to make sure there was no one else charging in, and then check on his impromptu fighting partner. It looked like she was still in one piece. "Hey, are you okay?"

Mina only gave a small jump when she successfully knocked the larger vagrant down! Her victory was short lived when she saw the younger man thudding against his body and she closed the distance between them just to make sure he was alright. "I could ask you the same. I didn't hurt you, did I?" As to which particular incident she was referring to, Mina couldn't be sure. She'd been pretty wild with her whip today.
"You're pretty strong." Mina started to loop her whip back into a circle before affixing it to a belt on her waist. It wasn't the fanciest of weapons, and showed considerable fraying but it was holding. Once she made better coin she would get something else. "Do you come out here often?"

Oly brushed his pants off and grinned confidently. "Nah, I'm good. Those jerks got the worst end of the stick." Still, he did look himself over to make sure there weren't any unnoticed whip injuries.
Clearly pleased with the compliment, he nodded and gestured at her. "You're not so bad yourself," he mused with a light laugh. "Actually, no. I'm not around here much at all; especially this late." He rubbed the back of his neck bashfully, thinking about what exactly had him out so late. "I guess it was fate though. What happened to get you tangled with those creeps?"

"Guess it's time to tip off the guards, huh? Unless you plan on telling them yourself?" Mina hedged around the question, giving him a sidelong look. "I'm not exactly looking...to talk to them on account of the whole...vigilante thing so if I can get by with them being in a cell and not me that's a goal." When she'd first started doing this she was so proud of herself; right up until the moment they wanted to take her along with the baddies! Causing a 'public disruption' and 'putting civilians in danger' wasn't her thing! She was the good guy!
"Sometimes when I'm on my rounds I see people stealing from ships. Usually the cargo is better guarded than this, but every once in a while something slips through." Mina shrugged.

So the girl was avoiding the guards? Ahh. Oly snorted and shook his head. "I know they've got a job to do.. but they could use a little critical thinking to leave you alone when you do good." He looked over at the trio and smirked. Stealing, eh? "Looks like they got what they deserved then. Don't worry, I can go get the guards then. You just stay out of sight."
He focused on the girl again. "Vigilante. Before you vanish off into the shadows again, any chance I can get your name? You really were impressive there." He gave her a charming smirk and shrugged. "I'm not any vigilante, so my name's Olokun. Oly, if you like."

Mina gave him a wink. "Can do. I've managed to stay out of their sights for this long so I think I can manage it a little longer." Granted, she hadn't been around long enough to get any real rumors started and those that had were quickly hushed. No one wanted to admit to having their tails handed to them by a teenager.
"I am the Great Defender Hokulua." She beamed, "And maybe one day you day you'll get my actual name, Oly. Hopefully this is the last time we see each other, though; you'd be safer not to be around here at night."

He knew nothing about this girl, her history, her reasons... but he was entranced. It was like out of one of those silly novels. "Hoku- I mean, The Great Defender Hokulua." He chuckled lightly and gave her a small bow. "As I said, I am rarely out here this late. As it is, if I happen to have the misfortune of being out at such an unsavory time, I will feel much more confident knowing you are here to watch out for us all." A copper coin novel from the mind of a romantic teen, that was all this was. This was definitely silly.
Yet, those guys had been a real threat. Would she really have been okay if he hadn't come along? His grin rose again. "Well, feel free to keep me in mind if you find yourself needing a little backup." He raised his hands lightly. "Not that you need the assistance, but if you'd like it~"

When Mina smiled there was a darkened orange tinge to her cheeks. He was being such a gentleman that the pride she felt in a job well done was practically going to her head. A strong, gallant man using her proper title? Oh, she could get used to that~
"Well, maybe if you do stay up past your bedtime I'll be there to keep you safe." She smirked, "Or maybe I'll cause a little trouble just to see you fight again. You really are quite good with your fists; do you fight much?"
