Late night coffee wasn't a sin, technically, but that didn't stop Alexander from thinking of it as a guilty pleasure as he all but snuck his way through the front door of the café. Snuck as much as the large man could manage, as if he didn't fill the doorway on entry. There weren't many people there to notice at least, so the man in sweats made his way to the counter with a smile. His overly caffeinated for the hour drink ordered, Alexander moved a table with two chairs, taking up the first chair and sitting to face the doorway. A smile stayed on his face, head bobbing lightly to the atmospheric music being played in the café. It was a serene moment for him, peaceful and calm. His eyes even brushed closed briefly, then again, as he sat there in the music.

Ash, as he was known in this civilian guise, was looking for something warm to drink. It wasn't that he was cold, the opposite really, but he liked hot drinks in the evening and tonight was the perfect night to find a hot drink to settle down with somewhere. Deciding to go for something public, so he could people watch, Ash had made his way into a cafe on near silent feet. He walked on the tips of his feet, an odd habit really, but iot kept his steps as silent as they could be, As he approached the counter, blue eys ever watchful, he went about ordering something. It would be a bit bitter, he knew it, but he would prefer that to something overly sweet.
With his order done he chose to stand near the counter, not sure just yet where he should sit. he wanted a view of everyone but he also wanted to hear everything he could. He was still learning about this planet but also he couldn't help himself - he needed to observe everyone around him. The sad part was that he couldn't hear nearly as well as he could when on his own planet, or smell, but he would do his best to hear as much as he could. It was a habit that was born into him, he was sure of this, and he wasn't about to give up on who he was.
When he finally did pick a seat it was alone, no surprise there, and curled up into a chair which made him look just as small as he actually was. He, and his people, had never been the biggest of people and many humans on this planet would drawf even the tallest of his people. It was how they were built...small and petite and made for speed and sneaking about unnoticed. They were not built to take up much space, as shown by how he was smaller tghan his current chair, and they tended to just keep to themselves when around strangers.

The barista called for an 'Alec', which, after a moment of no one else getting up, Alex realized that was probably him. No matter the name, something were just impossible, he guessed. He rose up and strolled to the station, thanking the barista as he took a deep breath of his overly sweet and hot drink. It was something of bliss, if not the best dental practices. Returning to his seat while taking the first sip of his drink, Alex let out a contented sigh. His eyes swept around the room, taking the café in for the moment. It wasn't empty when he had arrived, but it wasn't a hopping late night spot, which Alex liked. No one begrudged a soul muttering to themselves in a place like that. "It's been.... a week," he said to himself with a small sigh. "The Al Mualan account to start, but then that weird... Whatever that was. I'd swear it was a nightmare if not the cuts.""And all those people... Magic. If Gram heard she'd never be quiet about it again, shoving books right back in my hands." He snorted, shaking his head as he took another sip of his drink. He focused on the window looking out from the café, watching the night sky on the other end. "Some of it was... I don' know. Maybe it was just out there..."

WHen his own name was called Ash got up and headed for the counter, walking as he often did on the balls of his feet. It was a habit, to keep his steps as light and silent as possible, the long haired blond looked graceful even as akward as most would find walking in such a manner. He'd had lots of practice however, a lot of alone time would lend itself to such.
Thanking the worker for his drink he went to head back to his seat. Only as he was walking someone, a teenager who was goofing off with a friend, who had just come in nearly crashed into him and sent him banging into a table. The person at the table was sipping their drink and Ash's own drink sloshed out of the cup and onto the persons table. Catching himself, a hand shot out to land on the table and balance himself, he turned his pale eyes towards the unapologetic teen who was moving to quickly place an order while telling his friend he'd beaten him to the counter. "Brats..."
That never would have happened on his own planet. People, children, knew how to mind themselves in such situations. Children were children, that went without say, but they knew when to mind themselves and not go running around and goofing off. Clearly that was no the case here. Turning his focus onto the person sitting there he looked to see if they'd spilled their drink as well. "Sorry." And he did move to grab some napkins from the table so he could clean the mess his own drink had made.

Alexander didn't notice the passerby, too far in his own head at the moment, until the hot liquid splashed up against the table and gave him a start. His own hand jerking for a moment, splashing out a small wave of his coffee. He let out a small yelp of surprise as he shook his hand to rid it of the offending liquid. Too long since the brew to be hot enough to burn, thankfully, but still hot enough to give a sudden surprise. Caffeine or heat, the coffee would wake him up somehow it seemed. Coming back into the moment Alexander glanced to the blond, smiling gently with a shake of his head. "Oh, it's alright, a little hot coffee never... Well, it certainly helped wake me up," he laughed, shrugging at them. He looked around and grabbed some napkins of his own, dragging them around the table to help pull up the remnants. He'd never be able to sit around while someone else did work, that just wasn't proper. He scooted aside the table a bit as it dried up, glancing up at the counter with a small grin. "I take it you were a victim of the children's race track, hm?" He shook his head with a sigh, gesturing to the chair opposite him. "Ah, please, sit, sit. You'll have to wait for another drink at the least. I hope you haven't lost so much of it the cup is empty now.""You are not burned, are you?"

Watching as this person, an adult as he figured it, went to help him in cleaning the mess from the table. "I'd say the children would have woken me up were I near to sleeping." Though he wasn't near to sleeping, he'd just wanted a nice hot drink and coffee was one thing he'd found a liking for on this planet. It was hot but also the bitter taste wasn't bad at all, he liked some of the flavorings they could add as well, so long as his drink didn't become sweet from it. He didn't have a sweet tooth to speak of, at least not that he was aware of.
"Mmm, it would seem like it." Seating himself, not wanting to refuse the offer, he took a moment to lift the top off his drink and peek inside. It seemed he'd lost nearly half his drink - little brats. "Half gone." Rather than half full. He was not the most positive person in the universe, and he'd never claim to be either.
"I'll order once they are gone." Or at least not at the counter, and are seated at a table. That said he went to put the lid back on his drink and sip at it slowly. He was not pleased with those children.

"So it is also half full," said the optimist, optimistically, with a cheesy grin. "I'll beg your forgiveness for the bad joke, but I couldn't resist."Alexander resettled in his seat, checking his own cup for a brief moment before shrugging. He had barely lost any being the second victim of the incident, so he saw no worse for ware in the matter. A little coffee lost at the expense of children, such was the cost of the world he figured. His gaze drifted to those same children for a time before looking back to his new table mate. "I don't know about you, but my mother would've had me back there making the coffee by now, had I done what they did. My father would have been trying to take your clothes for cleaning, while offering his own to you in the meantime." He laughed, shaking his head with a deep breath of memory. "The world has changed much since we were so young, hm?"Alexander wasn't exactly good at telling ages with people. His new table mate could be his age, barely older than those same children, or passing twice his age for all he knew. Until someone really started carrying wrinkles, he was effectively age blind. He had at least learned not to assume advanced age, that had gotten him in hot water enough. "Oh, my apologies. I am Alex. What may I call you?"

"I suppose it is." But he wouldn't consider it to be such, he was not that sort of person. "You don't need to beg for anything, especially forgiveness. There is nothing to forgive when it comes to jokes." As they were just that - jokes. They weren't meant to be serious.
"Mmm, a great deal." At least for him, though for him he hadn't grown up on this world, but his world had changed a lot since he was a child...too much. None of the changes were good either...and it had nothing to do with children acting out and making a mess of things. "My mother would have scolded me, in private, and made a scene for anyone in the home to hear and see. My father would have done the same but perhaps with friends around as well." At least here they'd be considered friends. On his planet any of their kind were family of some sort...they were all the same in race and so all acted like family....it took a whole community to raise children. It also took a community to scold them and make them behave. His motehr just liked to keep it to actual blood family...unlike his father.
"Ash, you can call me Ash. It is good to meet you." As he might be able to learn things from this person, anyone really, depending on the conversation things could always be learned. He was still working on trying to better fit in on this planet...at least enough to get by.

"Good to meet you, Ash," Alex said with a grin. He settled into his chair again, taking a sip of his drink. "So, what brings you into a coffee shop late at night? Graveyard shift worker, or just one of those folk who can drink caffeine at any time and it doesn't really do much?"His gaze drifted briefly again to the kids but he looked back to Ash. He couldn't really do much about the kids, and he wasn't about to be an adult scolding children he didn't know. Part of him supposed there was the element of kids being kids, but the lessons kids were meant to learn had to come from somewhere. He had to stop himself before going down a philosophical rabbit hole, that wasn't needed. He had come here to relax, and what was a better way to relax than meeting a new person? Well, a new and normal person. He had met enough new people lately, but that was another thing. Sleet Tempest Snape So I totally missed the reply, as you can tell! I'm still up for it, if you are!

"I fear that I am one of those who can infact do just that. Though I know most cannot, and that so much caffine will keep them awake." But he could go right to sleep without worry, if he were interested in such. However Ash was not interested in sleeping right now, he was planning to wander the city and at some point he would power up. He would do a walk about some area, hoping to map out a new part of the city in his mind, while making sure everything in the area was safe and peaceful.
"I don't work late night, thankfully, I work day time but I prefer being up at night. I always have prefered the dark, often cooler climate, of the night." Back on his home planet it also helped that he could see rather well in the dark so it made hunting easy enough. Foods were cooked around fires in the evening also, it was when stories and information were shared, nighttime was the best time on his home planet. It was the time they were away from those visiting from elsewhere...where they were safe and home and away from the tourists. They could be themselves and not worry.
"What about you? Does it keep you up or can you sleep right after as well?"
MercilessMime Sorry for slowness, but I'm still up for finishing this. ^_^

Alex nodded along as Ash spoke, smiling in agreement with his fellow nocturnal soul. "Oh, it'll keep me up, but that's not much of a bother. Always been one of those folks who need a couple hours of shut-eye, and I'm right as rain. At least so far, my doctor swears it'll catch up with me one day, and she's probably right. But, eh," he said with a small shrug, chuckling to himself. "But, I appreciate meeting another night owl for the sake of being a night owl.""So, beyond the coffee shop, what's your plans for tonight then, since you're not working and the night is young?"

"Ah, I don't think it catches up to everyone. Though perhaps most." It hadn't ever caught up with him, and considering his own age he knew it never would. If it ever did somehow catch up with him, which he doubted it would, he'd be elderly and at that point it would most likely be that he was sleeping just so many hours that it didn't matter if it was day or night when he slept.
"I need a good sleep, likely longer than you do, but if I have a day off from work I'm staying up all night the evening before." Because he really couldn't help himself. He would stay up and wander the city as he was still getting used to this place. If he wasn't wandering the city, because there were those nights, than he'd be reaching and researching various things. There was a lot to learn on this planet and it's people...history and culture and so much more.
"I'm new to the city so I like to wander and find various places, to see what this city has to offer. The daytime and nighttime offer two different sets of things and I like exploring." He was curious and sought knowledge, information, because that was power to him. To know this city, to know it's lay out, could in a battle help keep him alive. He would learn this city as well as he could, among other things he planned to learn, but he would spend his evenings doing it. He would be powered up during those nights because he had things to do other than just wandering.
"What do you do with your evenings while you're up and about?"

"Well, I certainly hope I'm one of the ones it doesn't catch up with," Alex said with a laugh. "But I get you, bit of a don't let the time waste sort, make every hour your own. I respect that mentality."He smiled as he listened to the reasoning, nodding along enthusiastically. "I did the same thing when I first moved here. I'd try and go out much as I could, see the same place at different hours, learn the pulse of the city. Learn the layout, how the city's flow goes, when places are busy and not. It can make a big difference on how your day goes, depending what you're doing.""I go walking, so mostly the same. Sometimes I'll go stop in for a late night movie, other times I'll just pop into whatever restaurant looks interesting. It's how I've found some of my favorite places to eat, honestly." He laughed again, shaking his head. "There's a couple museums and the observatory, they have late nights sometimes, so that's something I do every now and again. Find things to fill the time, else I just walk around listening to a book or music."
