Ever since her sister had been taken she had not been left alone. Either she was with the triplets or she was escorted by an older family member. Today her body guard was a new one. Her cousin Ultear was here for the day. She didn’t often see him, his family was quite busy usually. He had definitely gotten taller.
“Do you have anything new or interesting to contribute?”

“Do I what?” His cousin made imperious an art form, but he could no longer call her spoiled after what had happened to her parent and sister. Sae had recovered from her injuries but it had been a close thing. He shuddered thinking obviously about himself in the same circumstance, though hopefully his Mother would have been wearing her swords or hidden sharp things.
She never did take them off now.

She rolled her eyes, all boys were the same, so slow on the quick draw, but she supposed that he was not actually blood related so that might be where the problem lay. Beauty plenty but so far no brains.. peasant.
She sighed, she didn’t need body guards, anyone who took her would regret It promptly.
Perhaps begging her parents to take her back. After which the offender would be mounted with due ceremony on her Father’s wall.
But instead they had taken her sweet defenseless sister.

What he had always worried about in Tethys seemed to have manifested instead in this waspish little girl. Strange, because her Father had warmed up to him in time. Though he supposed that having ones sister stolen, might well have such and effect on someone’s psychi, especially so young. He didn’t remember her being this ascerbic when she had been smaller, though by now she was approaching prentice age.
“I don’t have news of your sister if that is what you are asking.”

“I wasn’t asking for that specifically, it was more of a blanket statement, but its fine.”
No one had heard of her sister or the whole family would be buzzing with the news. She eyed him, trying to get a read on him quickly.
“Have you heard anything else of interest by chance?” She raised an eyebrow and flicked her hair.

Oh he could tell this was going to be hell. Then he pondered her question, deciding to give her the benefit of the doubt, maybe she was as intelligent as she sounded, even at this ultra young age.
“Merchants came in today with new beasts, Kiyelt has gone to look at them with Thal and Tethys. Ushi is manning the barn, likely eagerly awaiting the shipment of new critters if they find any at market today. He loves getting first dibs.”
“Large sapphires were found in a mine outside Zena, making the local treasure hunters go crazy.”
“The healer said your mother is now fit for duty and has healed nicely. Your Father cried when he heard but no one was supposed to see it.”

Hmm perhaps he was not completely useless and had just been hiding it all of this time. She grunted her Father’s grunt at him. “Better.”
He would make a valuable ally if only he was nearly as smart as she. After all she was brilliant like her parents were.
She raised her head expectantly.

“I was unaware that this was a test.” Had she perhaps gotten the unpleasant side from both of her parents and Nin and Kiyelt combined? He was suddenly quite grateful to have the brother he did. Ustasis was not this complicated or sour.
He was also determined if he had kids to have boys after this. Girls were scary.

She raised her eyebrows. “Everything is a test.” She picked at her nails. “I personally intend not to fail the next one.”
She still blamed herself partly for what had happened to her sister. She would not fail her family again. Had she been there the outcome might have been different, she wasn’t sure how exactly but it might have been.
She often dreamed of her sister, scared and alone among strangers.

Somewhat at a loss he said “I er don’t suppose if you would like to accompany me on a hunt? I feel like going for a walk on the beach, to see what we could see. We could even find a rowboat and check out some of the islands.”
It had worked for him Thal and Ushi. Why not for the daughter? At least he hoped so.

"Fine, but you are the son of a beast tamer right? So how about we make it a little more interesting..how about a snaptrotter training session? I have always wanted one and we might as well start today."
Her dad said it was too dangerous, that she was too young, but this boy was also the child of a tamer and he was older so it should be fine. Or he would get eaten, at least she would get to watch, it would also test his intelligence.

It was probably rash, deeply reckless, but his Father specialized in snaptrotters and was teaching him too. So he might as well test his skills. Maybe it would make her back off to see all of those big teeth, but from the ancient look in her eye he thought maybe not.
Still, it was a good time to do it. If they could find a nest all the better so long as they found a way to control the mother.
He nodded at her. "Okay."

He got points for bravery, so she nodded back at him. He was in fact still family..and she liked her aunty Rista and Uncle Umen..she hadn’t seen much of the other brother though.
She hadn’t thought Ultear would take the bait.
She thought that inspecting a few offshore islands with her escort rowing her along sounded delightful. Up to no good she was but she really wanted a snaptrotter and refused to feel guilty about it.

About an hour later they had found a decent island and it being breeding season it didn't take all that long to find a nest.
"Well that mound is exactly what we are looking for, but we need very much to find out the location of the mother, they like to lurk and despite rumors they do not eat while they are brooding."
It was best to scope it out for a bit to see if they could find the Mother at the cost of some other poor creature. Especially after Kechi's aunt had been bitten.

“I need to see the female, her coloration will help determine that of her offspring and I refuse to have an ugly hatchling!” Besides it was always good to check for health, just like she had with her grade A janarim. He was perfection though she still had to name him.
It would be great if their colors went well together too! Only perfection would do! Maybe she took more after Aunty Ny then anyone knew!
