Heatwaves (11) : An unfortunate dry spell has come over Destiny City, and a heat wave has made it all but unbearable. The heatwave is only projected to last for a week but it’s been rough. Plants are wilting, people are wilting. The city is experiencing blackouts, which isn’t helping. Thankfully, the reservoir is always open. Just, crowded. It might just be the worst part of the summer. People are passing out regularly, and the hospitals are getting too many admissions to keep up with. It’s probably just the heat and not anyone up to anything nefarious, right? Better stay hydrated and try to keep cool, and maybe avoid everyone in weird costumes, just in case.

In her absolute worst imaginings of other worlds, Ny kept thinking of volcanic places. She kept thinking of terrain dotted with lava, smoke and ash spewing out of mountaintops, raining molten rock down upon unsuspecting Vanguardians who were just trying to take cover under earthy outcroppings way too hot to touch- then their boots would melt to the stone, and they'd be stuck there, tight bodysuits all clinging to them and everyone stinking of sweat and dread, and honestly that had to be the lowest rung of terrible places they could've gone.

Earth had seemed comparatively nicer than her worst fears. It had been quite temperate when they arrived, with their great, shining star only capable of inflicting mild burns. A month later, and it had grown cold.

Ny wouldn't complain about this. It wasn't the controlled atmosphere of Velencya, but it was still much better than blood boiling or skin melting.

Now, a few more months later, Ny was growing skeptical of the situation again. One hundred and twelve blinked warningly in the corner of her ComTech's screen, in the unit of measure most frequently used by people in this region on the planet. It was apparently uncommonly high for this area, and it was deemed a level of heat unsuitable for outdoor activity for those unaccustomed to it. ...Ny begrudgingly had to admit that she was not accustomed to it. She'd lived in a comfortable, temperate climate all her life. All of their species were bioengineered to require exactly the degree of temperature and light available. There wasn't much reason to train excessively for unfamiliar climates.

It certainly hadn't been a focus of Ny's training, and she felt a little caught off guard because of it.

She'd grown accustomed to leaving the house nearly every day. She had things to do, small explorations to be had. But she'd stepped one foot outside in her typical civilian wear of jeans and a t-shirt, and... It felt like the heat in the air was actively trying to smother her. Ny had retreated back inside quickly. The summer had been hot, but today was just... abysmal. The temperature indicator on her ComTech kept blinking soundlessly, as if trying to warn her. Maybe it was best to just- Not do a go today? It would just be one day!

She and Fysarius could partake in the typical Earth customs when trips outside were less agreeable of Netflix and chilling! He would like to spend more time with her, she was sure. And it was hard to argue about leaving the house when she couldn't even press the tips of her fingers to the clear glass window without feeling an uncomfortable sting of heat.

It just seemed so unreasonable that the Sun could treat the planet this way. Weren't there plants, animals who couldn't survive this heat? Weren't there people who couldn't survive this heat? Who had nowhere to go when temperatures rose "unreasonably" high? She'd heard them say it was uncommon for it to be so hot, but it didn't seem like there was much to be done about it when their was... No city-wide visor to provide shade, nothing positioned to reflect the light away. No one even handing out cool water to those in need!

They just accepted the whims of their star, like it was some great deity. Maybe it was better to not have a sun.
