Quote:
It was already late in the evening but the merchant seemed unfazed by the passing of time. He sat, poised and elegant, watching the world around him. He didn’t seem bored, even as he leaned forward and laced his fingers atop the table; below it, he kept his toe tapping to some silent tune in his head. He was tall, by human standards, though while sitting down he didn’t seem particularly threatening. If you didn’t look at his face.

He had graceful features--sharp and refined. His chin and nose tapered to a point, giving him an air of sophistication, but that, combined with his slitted eyes and pointed teeth, there was something undeniably predatory about him. He watched with a hungry gaze and a mischievous, nearly sinister smile. His ears were pointed and were prominent despite being tucked behind his vibrant, multi-colored hair. The most intrusive feature that indicated there was something not human about him were the curling horns protruding from his temples and the oil-slick black scales that brushed his cheeks and forehead. He was well dressed, in a fashion obviously otherworldly, and seemed to enjoy dressing himself up in glistening gemstones.

His table was somehow both simple and overwhelming; it was draped in a dark purple tablecloth, with extravagant embroidery in different designs. Scattered neatly atop the table was an array of items that seemed to carry some magical weight to them.

He did not seem intimidated in the slightest and, upon noticing that the barrier surrounding him rippled when his visitor entered, he smiled.

He did not rise to meet them nor adjust his position in the slightest. He followed them with his fierce eyes and greeted, in a silky voice, “Welcome.”

Naeria shouldn't have interested in trading, or merchants. She'd formed her opinions very quickly on Earth's capitalism, and those opinions were that it was terrible, and that every stall at this star festival selling cheaply made star pins and lanterns and greasy, meaty food, was just an extension of that commercial culture.

And yet, she was interested, because she did like the things.

She'd found galaxy leggings and earrings and a vegan burrito, and with only a little bit of hesitation, she'd bought them.

She'd heard of another stall outside the main festival, though, a stall that was less Earthly in nature, and of course her curiosity won out. With Fae-Fae at her side, she'd went to find it, and she'd ducked through the barrier.

"Oh," she whispered when she saw the horns and the slit eyes of the man in front of her. "It's true. You're a visitor, too."

While out scouting the Star Festival with Naeria, Fae-Fae would check her ComTech GPS every couple of minutes and sigh dejectedly when it once again turned up nothing. It was more or less what she had been doing all day. Since the moment Aliez had reported Vyn's disappearance she had started scouting the city for any signs of his whereabouts -- and when Caelyna had also been reported missing, the Corporal had kept going with even greater urgency.

Now she was exhausted, and barely paying attention to the overwhelming sights and sounds and smells that surrounded them. She only perked up slightly at Naeria's words, and stood up a little straighter upon noticing where they had been led. An out-of-this-world trading post in the care of an out-of-this-world visitor.

Maybe her friends were here and something about this place was cutting out their signal? Fae-Fae looked at her GPS again and peered all around the store, but there was no sign of any other Vanguardians besides Naeria and herself. She made a dejected, frustrated little noise.

The merchant blinked at the two of them with sudden, obvious interest. Maybe, from a distance, he’d suspected that they were costumes or something–but up close it was impossible to mistake them.

“Oh! This is fascinating. I had no idea anyone else was going to be visiting. I don’t think I’ve run into your kind before.” He seemed eager to offer a hand. “Almadel,” he introduced, smiling to Naeria first and then Fae-Fae right after.

“A pleasure, of course. Are you visiting for the Star Festival as well, or…?”

It wasn't a secret that Naeria was shy.

Even with the Vanguard, she had a tendency to hover at the corners of things, and in the human world? If she was the one sent out for supplies, it wasn't uncommon for her to have to steel herself for a few minutes by the checkout line, thoughts swirling in her head and words caught in her throat.

Right now, though, she could feel the tension in Fae-Fae, beside her.

She knew her friend was worried about the others. She knew her friend didn't like situations like this any more than she did, in the best of cases.

So, she could be the brave one. She could do the talking.

Maybe.

"Um. Yes," she said, slowly. "Just for the Star Festival."

He didn't need to know about any of the rest. She swallowed, trying her best.

"Is this a business?"

It looked like some of the other stalls they'd walked past.
