Quote:
It was already late in the evening but the merchant seemed unfazed by the passing of time. He sat, poised and elegant, watching the world around him. He didn’t seem bored, even as he leaned forward and laced his fingers atop the table; below it, he kept his toe tapping to some silent tune in his head. He was tall, by human standards, though while sitting down he didn’t seem particularly threatening. If you didn’t look at his face.

He had graceful features--sharp and refined. His chin and nose tapered to a point, giving him an air of sophistication, but that, combined with his slitted eyes and pointed teeth, there was something undeniably predatory about him. He watched with a hungry gaze and a mischievous, nearly sinister smile. His ears were pointed and were prominent despite being tucked behind his vibrant, multi-colored hair. The most intrusive feature that indicated there was something not human about him were the curling horns protruding from his temples and the oil-slick black scales that brushed his cheeks and forehead. He was well dressed, in a fashion obviously otherworldly, and seemed to enjoy dressing himself up in glistening gemstones.

His table was somehow both simple and overwhelming; it was draped in a dark purple tablecloth, with extravagant embroidery in different designs. Scattered neatly atop the table was an array of items that seemed to carry some magical weight to them.

He did not seem intimidated in the slightest and, upon noticing that the barrier surrounding him rippled when his visitor entered, he smiled.

He did not rise to meet them nor adjust his position in the slightest. He followed them with his fierce eyes and greeted, in a silky voice, “Welcome.”

Ilse did not often go looking for mysterious strangers, because mysterious strangers could be quite dangerous when you were a fugitive from the Negaverse, but this particular mysterious stranger intrigued her instantly.

He wasn't human, but he didn't feel like a half-youma--no Chaos aura here. Which meant....well, she supposed it meant he must be like Fang and the Velencyans; an alien, from some other planet, who had decided to visit this one.

She gave him a polite smile, as she approached his table. Goodness, he was handsome; her heart did a little flutter, and she had to force herself not to flush or gasp. Especially once she heard that lovely, silky voice.

He didn't necessarily look particularly trustworthy, but that didn't matter. He also didn't look like he was about to sell her out to her enemies.

"Hi," she said, and she waved. "I'm Ilse. What's all of this?" She regarded the spread of his wares with interest. So many beautiful things, and he seemed liek he might be the type to trade. "Are they for sale? Or is this a display of a private collection?"

Oh, she hoped they might be for sale. There were so many things she could imagine she might want.

The Merchant smiled as politely as she had, and he seemed to delight in the attention she was giving him. “Hello, Ilse. This is a private collection, but I haven’t come all this way just to show it off. I’m not looking for a sale so much as a trade. Earth currency doesn’t buy much unless you’re local and I don’t tend to stick around for long enough to use the pennies I collect. No, I’m much more interested in skipping over the middleman. If you’ve got anything you’re willing to part with,” he gestured towards his spread on the table, “I’ve brought mine out, too.”

There was a wide array of things on his table, from books to weapons to strange little trinkets that didn’t seem to have any obvious function.

“Someone as pretty as you, well. I just want to dress you up. You know, I’ve got some blue roses around here, you might like them. Oh–how about this?”

He pulled out a pretty handheld mirror. The silver had a beautiful antique tone to it, and the roses that lined the mirror seemed like they had been treated to have a metallic blue sheen. He held it up to admire himself–tilted his head to the left, the right, and then turned the mirror over so she could see herself.

She was there, but the background behind her was completely gone. Instead of the green hill and the dark sky, the mirror showed a white room with great, glass windows, and a garden of well-kept blue roses. No matter how the mirror was turned, it seemed to show the same room, although from a slightly different angle.

Oh. Ilse supposed that made sense. She tilted her head to the side and considered--he obviously wasn't from Earth, so of course Earth money would be useless to him.

"Anything I'm willing to part with..." She had to think for a long moment. Most of the things that came to mind immediately--her Senshi phone, her henshin pen--were obviously far too important to hand over.

It was the mention of blue roses that got her mind whirling--just like the ones on her outfit, just like the ones on her homeworld--but she was distracted by the mirror that he laid in front of her, and she gasped. Very carefully, she reached out to touch it, lifting it and tilting it this way and that--and she wasn't certain, but the image in it made her heart skip a little.

"That....it looks like my planet," she said, softly. As it was, perhaps, once upon a time. Before whatever had left it the barren mess she'd found the first time she visited.

But that reminded her of what she'd been thinking aobut,b efore she got distracted.

"Oh! I think I know--" She reached into her subspace pocket with a thought, and produced a single blue rose bloom. "I know it doesn't look like much, but I've been working on restoring my world! And this flower--it's from there. From the first rose bush I got blooming again, actually. I've had it for a while and it hasn't wilted or anything, so I think it might be special, and it kind of is anyway, being, you know. One of the first things to bloom on Ilse in a thousand years?"

Oh, she hoped that worked, because the mirror--she wanted it. It made something in her heart ache, like it was something important to her, even though she'd never seen it before.

Maybe the Merchant was feigning ignorance when he looked surprised to hear that she said it looked like her world, but he seemed no less invested in her interest. She offered a rose–a single rose–but she looked so excited.

He reached out, humming thoughtfully, and carefully pinched the stem between two fingers.

He drew it to his nose, taking in the aroma.

“Oh, well I can imagine this must be very special to you. I didn’t think you could keep things for very long in that magical little pocket of yours. If you’ve had it for a while and it hasn’t wilted, I might be inclined to see how long I can get it to last for me. You’re a pretty girl, I can see how much you like that mirror. I’ll tell you what, for you, I will make this trade. Only because I can see you’re going to take good care of it. And, maybe someday, you can invite me to your world and show me how those roses are doing.”

Ilse smiled, bright and delighted, and she carefully picked up the mirror, turning it left and right and examining the beautiful scene within. It made her heart feel warm, and soft, and it made her feel more determined to spend more time on her world--to restore it properly, like it deserved.

"You're very sweet, sir." She said, holding the mirror close to her chest. "I'd be glad to take you to my planet sometime, when it's a little more recovered! The garden's still a mess, right now, I'm afraid. Definitely not fit for visitors."

But she would make it fit for visitors. She would make it beautiful again.

She bowed, because that seemed the thing to do.

"Thank you so much!" She gave a last wave, and turned to leave.

What a lucky evening. She'd have to show this pretty new thing to Lysithea, and to her other friends--she bet they would love it as much as she did.
