The Reservoir (4) : The Destiny City Reservoir opened about two years ago and is an easy escape from the big city. It’s a five minute drive outside of the Eastern side of town and features clear water and sandy beaches--although, the sand here is notorious for squeaking when you step on it. It’s a hot spot for all fun summer activities, but it’s been in the news for mysterious reports of some strange, aquatic monster. Some accounts say they’ve spotted a twenty foot long, snake like creature capable of rearing a long neck high above the water. It’s hard to tell if the videos are doctored, but there are too many rumors to dismiss easily. Something strange might be lurking deep in the water. Or it’s just a hoax to get people out to the Reservoir!

But…Sometimes, people feel like something is grabbing their ankle, even if they are just wading in the shallow end. In the deeper parts of the water, it gets a little more intense: something has been said to grab onto ankles and pull. People have been warned about dangerous pranks, but so far no one has been caught. In the shallow end, anyone unfortunate enough to be targeted may feel themselves being knocked off their feet and tugged into the water; anyone in deep water may feel a firm grip on their ankle, tugging them lower and lower. Somehow, anyone it targets is freed--either by wriggling and fighting, or because someone intervenes and pulls the would-be victim up. No one has drowned in the lake. Yet. It's impossible to see who, or what, is doing this, but it usually gives up after one failed attempt. Usually.

While you may find yourself harassed by the supposed cryptid, or see something visibly odd in the distance, you cannot take any pictures of the creature. Who knows if you’re even being attacked by the cryptid–or just another youma?

Squeak!

Misha shifted his foot in the sand. He laughed, because what other reaction was he supposed to have to squeaking sand other than to laugh? He moved his foot again.

Squeak!

“The famous squeaking sand of the Destiny City Reservoir,” he said for the benefit of the camera, which he cast down toward his feet, catching the next several squeaks as he made his way closer to the water.

There were rumors about this place. There were always rumors around Destiny City, but the Reservoir seemed to be a regular culprit. It was hard to believe it wasn’t even that old, what with all the urban legends that sprung up around this place. It worked out for Misha, of course. His fans liked when he posted videos about all the weird things that happened in Destiny City, even when they didn’t believe any of it.

“I heard people’ve seen a monster around here,” Misha said, almost conversational, though whether he was conversing with the camera or with his companions was anyone’s guess. “Like Loch Ness. This place is manmade, though, so it’s gotta be a hoax.”

In response, the sand beneath his feet gave another squeak.

Lev grumbled as he made his way after Misha. But it was important that he keep him safe, especially after all of the weird things going on in the city. Sure, Misha might have more power than him, but that didn’t matter.

Lev cared deeply for him and… okay, he could admit that he was a little over protective. And kind of grumpy. And didn’t like to play well with others. He’d followed Misha into the Rift before, and he would do it again if it gave him any kind of extra support.

Which was why Lev was following the two younger, shorter men with a camera of his own. He kept his focus mostly on the water, in case whatever was supposedly appearing would surface. If it made Misha happy to catch footage of whatever it was, then he would be happy, too.

Squeak!

But he could do without the squeaking sand.

Yuuri had his shoes off as he followed Misha. He didn’t often go near water, so he kept eyeing it with wariness. Especially if there was something that pulled people under the water.

“Misha, be careful,” he called after him as--

Squeak!

He sighed as he squeaked his way after his friend, his shoes held in one hand and pants rolled up his ankles.

“You should stay away from the water,” he suggested, because he didn’t want anything happening to him.

“I’m fine~” Misha insisted.

They were both such worry warts — Lev with his overprotectiveness and Yuuri with his unceasing anxiety. Misha didn’t really think there was anything in the water. If there was, it couldn’t be any worse than anything they’d face before. They’d caught a Princess, after all! (And then lost her, but that part wasn’t their fault.)

“I won’t go in very far,” he reassured them. “We can stick to the shallows. I don’t have the right clothes for swimming anyway.”

Besides, he wasn’t the strongest swimmer.

He wasn’t going to mention that, though. Lev would drag him right out of the water.

Misha stopped squeaking through the sand as soon as he stepped foot into the water. He cast the camera around, searching the horizon for any sign of the monster, pausing long enough to get a good view of the sunset, the sun an orange glow, sinking low in the distance.

“If there is anything out here, it’s probably just a youma,” he said.

They’d edit that part out later.

There had better not be a youma hiding in the water. They were civilians! There was at least one thing he could do better than Misha, and that was control the youma. They didn’t like Senshi for whatever reason, which he thought was the most ridiculous thing he’d ever heard, but apparently it was true.

He would just have to keep getting stronger so he could protect Misha better, that was all.

Lev scowled as Misha waded into the water, but he kept an eye out for anything mysterious going on. He didn’t pay much mind to their other housemate, which was normal, but he was grateful that Yuuri seemed to worry about Misha as much as he did.

Yuuri happened to think that Misha was quite capable, it was just that Yuuri tended to worry more than he needed to. He trusted Misha not to do anything too dangerous.

Although potentially getting pulled into the water was pretty dangerous in his book.

Still, he wasn’t going to let Misha go alone, so when he made his way into the water a little, Yuuri was quick to follow.

The water itself wasn’t bad, and so far there didn’t seem to be anything out of the ordinary. They would probably have to ask a General to come out and make sure any youma in the area were told to go back to the Rift. It wouldn’t do well to have them terrorizing civilians without direct orders.

“It’s a beautiful view, at least,” Yuuri commented quietly. They could just edit out what he said later, but everything looked so nice. Although he might be biased since the sunset matched the colors of his Senshi outfit.

“Destiny City isn’t all bad,” Misha agreed.

He took footage of the water, too — some ripples in the distance, which probably resulted from a shift in the breeze but might make someone think something might rise up from below. Nothing did, of course. As cool as it would be to catch something on camera, Misha knew better than to think the rumors were anything more than that: rumors.

Or youma. That still remained a possibility. He would’ve thought someone would have done something about it by now, if that was the case.

Just when Misha was about to make his way out of the water, he jumped and let out a high pitched shriek.

“Something grabbed my ankles!” he said.

He kicked a foot and backed away as quickly as he could, swinging the camera around like he was trying to find what did it, only there wasn't anything there.

Alas, Misha could not contain his amusement. He snickered once, then broke into laughter, turning to capture the view of Lev’s face.

“Just kidding!”

Something was grabbing Misha’s ankles?! Lev had immediately dropped the camera he’d been carrying-- thankfully just around his neck since it was on a strap, but he would have thrown it to the ground if he thought he could get to Misha faster!

Lev very nearly shoved Yuuri out of the way so he could storm into the water, but was caught by Misha’s mocking joke.

Do not do that!” Lev barked at Misha in distress, the color that had briefly left his face quickly flooding back with red. “We go home!” he barked some more, reaching to grab for Misha’s arm so he could physically drag him out of the water if he had to, his accent slipping more with his obvious displeasure.

He almost wished it had been a youma so he could pulverize something. Instead he had to fuss over Misha being very incredibly mean to the people who cared about him. Maybe a little excessively, but that wasn’t the point!

How was he supposed to trust Misha being in the Negaverse and doing all of the things he was supposed to be doing, like secret missions for now General Kings when he wasn’t taking his own safety seriously?

“That was not funny, Mishenka. You delete that from your footage or I will never help again!”

When Misha shrieked, Yuuri did as well, and immediately tried jumping out of the way of anything that might grab his ankles too! His hand was already reaching into his pocket for his pen to power up if necessary because then he could at least teleport to Misha if he got pulled under but--

Oh… oh, he was just joking about it.

“Misha…” Yuuri blubbered with tears pricking the corners of his eyes, his hand over his chest to try and calm his very quickly beating heart. He thought something was seriously going to pull Misha into the water!

But maybe Misha knew that he and Lev were too uptight about everything. Yuuri didn’t think it was really his fault, given his history. Still, he couldn’t help but agree with Lev that they should probably leave the mystery of the reservoir to better prepared monster hunters.
