Quote:
Heatwaves (11) : An unfortunate dry spell has come over Destiny City, and a heat wave has made it all but unbearable. The heatwave is only projected to last for a week but it’s been rough. Plants are wilting, people are wilting. The city is experiencing blackouts, which isn’t helping. Thankfully, the reservoir is always open. Just, crowded. It might just be the worst part of the summer. People are passing out regularly, and the hospitals are getting too many admissions to keep up with. It’s probably just the heat and not anyone up to anything nefarious, right? Better stay hydrated and try to keep cool, and maybe avoid everyone in weird costumes, just in case.

While he had escaped the heat for a few days by going to his wonder, Shoqafa couldn't simply stay there indefinitely. He only had so much water there, after all -- the supply he'd slowly built up was already almost entirely gone, meaning he'd need to start to build it up again, but that was a problem for future Shoqafa. For now, he needed to make sure there wasn't anyone up to no good and taking advantage of the heat.

Thus it was he came to the park -- the sun had set, taking some of the heat with it, though much of it still radiated from the ground beneath them -- and saw...well, someone strange.

Are those...? No, they can't be, that can't be real...

Clearly someone didn't consider all the ramifications of there being people who came from somewhere other than Earth when he had met the merchant before, but he slowly moved closer to what appeared to be a guy with animal ears, and rather than do the common sense thing of asking about them, he reached a hand out to try and pet them.

Fang was beginning to regret coming out to the park today. It was too hot. Way too hot. He could barely move around at this rate, and he was getting increasingly dehydrated. He stopped by a bench near a fountain, thankfully under some shade away from the setting sun, and deeply considered just jumping into the damn fountain. It was probably too hot for anyone else to be out causing mischief, anyway.

Of course, those thoughts were all well and good, until someone sneaked up on him and petted his ears. The second they were touched, he howled in anger, standing up and whirling around to face whoever the ******** this was, baring his fangs and getting his hands in a position good for his spell.

"Who you?!" he demanded furiously, "You dare? Touch is no-no!"

Honestly, Shoqafa should have realized that simply going to pet ears -- even ears he was sure were fake -- was a breach of privacy, but with the heat came a distinct lack of judgement that he otherwise was really good about. But even so, he hadn't expected the quick, angry reaction that he got.

"...those were real..." There was a moment as he watched the other before clearing his throat and actually stepping back, holding his hands in front of him. He wasn't sure if sweat could be seen from beneath his...attire, but he was certainly feeling it.

"Ahem. My apologies, I...thought they were fake. They simply looked..." No, no, he couldn't say cute, never call someone angry cute, first rule of...something. Right? "...soft. Very, very soft. I have a fondness for soft things, but I should have asked instead of just...assumed."

Fang snorted angrily, still frowning severely for a long moment, before he settled, straightening up and crossing his arms as the rest of his body relaxed and slouched, face now pouting.

"Ears real. Tail real," he said shortly, looking hard at Shoqafa. "Fang take care of self. Of course soft."

The heat was getting to him, rolling over him in another wave that sent him collapsing back on the bench with a groan. "Too hot for anger."

Shoqafa let out a heavy sigh, hands lowering but still open, still watching Fang's movements. "I didn't say you weren't taking care of yourself. Even taking care of something, sometimes it doesn't...well. Sometimes, fur isn't so soft, even with all of the bathing and grooming possible, there's not often anyone that...has fur like that."

Was he stammering a little bit? Maybe.

"You're right, though, that it's too hot for anger...but what are you going to do if someone tries to hurt you despite the heat? There's a lot of crimes of opportunity going on from people who are...able to deal with the heat long enough to beat or steal things from someone or somewhere. You...given your stance earlier, I assume you do know how to defend yourself...right?"

Fang opened one lazy, still kind of angry eye to stare up at Shoqafa. This strange earthling... He was already annoyed at the guy talking about the nuances of fur, as if he had any idea what he was talking about when Fang himself clearly was not from <********> Earth, and therefore this s**t probably didn't apply (and for a moment under his anger he was a little bit pleased with himself for the presumably correct use of the amazingly flexible Earth cuss word he absolutely loved to say, maybe a little too much).

He lifted his lip, showing off a small fang for a moment, then sighed, sitting up.

"Know fight animal. People harder," he said, groused, really, reluctant to show even the slightest bit of weakness to this person he was already really not endeared to, "Why? You make fun of Fang?"

He bared both of his fangs this time, eyes flashing with anger. He didn't understand why he was so... volatile, today, but he just... couldn't help it. This guy was supremely irritating, and Fang did not like it, not one little bit. Apology or not. He barely suppressed a growl as it was; his allies list was already short, and he didn't want, really, to make an enemy who was technically on his side in this war. He just... argh! Why were people so irritating?! He missed his open sky in the meadows, he missed laying about with the animals he counted as family, and he missed not needing to talk so much.

But he supposed he had to get over himself.

"Sorry," he said tiredly, "Fang not... have good day. Don't want... to be mean."

Hopefully, that would help. The guy didn't.... really seem to be all that bad.

Shoqafa only had a very limited...bit of information about anything not from Earth, so he could only work with what he had, and he was trying as best as he could, at least. Thus, he tried to give Fang time to...well. Talk, yes, but also to relax. Even with the sun setting and night starting to set in, it was still pretty hot.

He couldn't help the soft smile on his face, however, as Fang admitted where his strengths and weaknesses were.

"For what it's worth, I'm the opposite?" He moved close enough to crouch down -- heat rose, after all, so it was cooler closer to the ground. "Most people don't know how to fight animals, how to fight with nothing but instinct. Not without a lot of training to make it a learned instinct, at least. But people, humans will exploit that if they realize your strengths, use them against you."

He kept quiet for a moment, chewing on his lower lip. "I can teach you some, that's...actually what I do for a living -- outside of, y'know, this whole getup. Teaching people to fight, to defend, to survive. I won't force you to learn, but if you wanted...."

Fang eyed him, and then stood up and stretched languidly. "Yes. I take your offer. Show me fight," he said, staring down Shoqafa with serious eyes and taking a stance, somewhat crouched with feet apart. He'd found another one of the star charms earlier and drew strength from it, the pretty little trinket he adored.

Shoqafa watched Fang carefully, making mental notes, falling more into the 'instructor' mindset than the 'knight' mindset, posture seeming to relax as he took in what all was there.

"When you fight, use everything at your disposal. Items nearby can be made into weapons. Your body is a weapon, one that you can train better than any other."

He moved to almost mirror Fang's position, but there was a slight difference. "Feet slightly further apart, up on the balls of your feet to maximize maneuverability. Hands not directly in front of your face but where you can block incoming blows." There's a pause before, "Know where your enemy's weak spots are. Eyes, neck, solar plexus," one of his hands moved lower to show exactly where that was given it wasn't the easiest thing to find. "Front of the throat. Remember that. If the fight is...not dire, be careful. Eyes are difficult to impossible to heal if hurt in the exact right way. If you nick the right spot on the side of the neck, they can bleed out easily. Front of the neck is the windpipe, enough pressure will be lethal. Solar plexus and lower is safer if you don't want it to be that bad but need to get away. But if you're fighting for your life, nothing is off limits."

He shifted again, moving into a position that was better for his body, his center of gravity, still on the balls of his feet and hands in front of his face. "Hair pulling, tripping, throwing, anything and everything is permitted when you need it. Some people, for whatever reason, won't do that. Those people often don't last long when things get bad."

There's a pause before, "You likely know most of this, if not all of it, but it's important to know. So now...come at me." He wasn't going to attack -- but he'd also just infodumped on poor Fang.

Fang followed the adjustments to his stance, the directions easy enough. Something about this felt better... He stared at Shoqafa for a long moment, watching, ears twitching, as he waited. He didn't want to approach right after he was told to, and needed to ensure that the moment he jumped forward would be a surprise. His muscles were tense, and he leaned forward slightly on the balls of his feet.

After another long moment, he launched, torso low, to plow into Shoqafa's stomach with his head.
