Quote:
The Wishing Tree (2) : Your wish is only said to come true if you grant the wish of someone else; when you write your wish, you must also take one off of the tree and do your best to grant it. What wish do you pull off, and how do you intend to ‘grant’ it? Do you work with someone else to grant this wish, or do you work alone? You may get approval from another player to use the wish their character hung up, but no names are attached so your character may not ever know who wrote it!

They’d picked wishes to fulfill, hoping that today would be better for them, emotion wise. At least for Alyssum, who was still feeling rather distressed about not being able to help Velencya or the Commodore as quickly as they would have liked. Did Earth even have the answers? They were working with Andreiya to figure out some healing properties, but that might not be enough for even one of them being gravely injured, much less their whole world.

Still, Alyssum picked up a wish that said how they would like to see less litter in the park. Alyssum agreed. Less litter would be ideal. But he was also practical about it, so he had gloves with him, and a couple trash bags. He wanted to help Vin with his wish too, if possible. Vin was practical and likely picked up a wish that would be beneficial and also play to his skill sets. Which were a lot more than Alyssum could say about his own. He could heal someone with a Source Stone, he could now read and write English relatively well (with the occasional assistance of his ComTech), but he still paled in comparison to Vin’s combat abilities.

As they headed towards the park, Alyssum couldn’t help but notice all of the stalls set up for the Star Festival. It was… nice… seeing them there. It was good to know that there was something the humans did together, even if it was just for entertainment purposes. There were vendors with food, vendors with little crafts, vendors with--

“Vin…” he said when his eye caught sight of something that looked… familiar in a way… maybe it was just a coincidence but…

He gestured towards the vendor with star charms on display, but the shape around the stars were very personal to them.

Vin didn’t care much about fulfilling anyone’s wish. He thought it must be a waste of time, taking part in some festival that seemed unlikely to offer them any answers. But in experiencing what Earth had to offer, they were learning more about Earth and its culture — and, potentially, what made it so special.

They were also potentially straying from their mission. There would be no way to tell until they had answers — a prospect Vin faced with some frustration. He knew their mission would not be easy, but he did hope for a clearer path.

The wish he chose involved the planting of more flowers. Since he did enough of that on his own, he thought it best to help Alyssum with his chosen wish first.

Not that Vin cared to pick up after humans. They should be picking up after themselves. Whoever wrote the wish could’ve spent less time picking up a few pieces of trash on their own than they spent writing the wish and attaching it to the tree.

So it was that Vin turned eagerly toward the distraction Alyssum pointed out.

A distraction that made him stop in his tracks, hands making fists around the trash bag he carried.

That was their symbol. Sure, there was a star in the center of it, and smaller stars attached to it, which made it a little less their symbol, but still. It was similar enough, and came on the heels of their arrival. How could he not think it suspicious?

“Someone is mocking us,” he said, low, so his voice wouldn’t travel.

Alyssum didn’t want to think that someone was making a mockery out of their symbol, but it wouldn’t be the first time they’d seen that happen. The Negaverse’s Queen turned their symbol into a medal for their ranks. Something to wear around when they weren’t even Velencian. As if they understood anything about what it meant.

“But who? Do you think… there are others involved with the festival that wish to make fun of us?” Alyssum asked, lowering his voice to a whisper as he glanced around at the humans milling around and going about their business. Some were admiring the charms, and some had even collected a few.

“It looks like they are being offered as part of the festival. Should we take a couple so we can analyze them and determine if there is a source they came from?” he asked, wary about what any of this could possibly mean, but also wanting to bring it to the Commodore’s attention.

Once they had some more answers.

He didn’t want to stress the Commodore out more by voicing complaints without any solution to offer, or conclusion to give.

Vin tore his eyes away from the charms to cast suspicious glances at some of the other people in the vicinity, half expecting the Negaverse Queen to show up with another smile and a cute little giggle as she gushed about what lovely little trinkets they were. He saw the medals, sometimes, when he happened upon an agent who’d been there to receive one. Some of them liked to wear them for the express purpose of flaunting them in their faces, like they wanted to insult their Velencian guests.

It was an outrage, and yet Vin was forced to bear it.

He would have to bear this one, too, no doubt.

“I don’t know,” he said, because it didn’t seem as if anyone else was involved in the making of the charms, but they could never be too sure. And then, “Yes.”

They should take a couple to analyze. Maybe some of the others might have heard something of them, or the Commodore might know if the Negaverse Queen was planning something. (How the Commodore could tolerate her, Vyn would never know. It must simply be another sign of the Commodore’s magnificence.)

He approached the little stall and claimed a charm for himself — purple, because it would look best with his uniform.

Not that he planned on wearing it, but it appealed to him the most.

Since Vin picked the purple, Alyssum was torn between the blue and the green, because they both looked nice. The gold as well.

In the end, Alyssum picked the green. Maybe he would have to come back around to try and collect the other colors. Maybe they would need more research material. Or maybe he just wanted to see about grabbing a couple to decorate his room (or the Commodore’s little house in Negaspace) if it turned out that the shape was just coincidental.

“Shall we continue to the park then?” After all, they had wishes to fulfill and pieces of paper to bury.
