Quote: The Meteor Shower (3) : It wouldn’t be a star festival without a meteor shower! Right on time, a beautiful array of shooting stars graces the night sky. This time of year is unnaturally clear and it’s incredibly easy to see the stars. Most meteor fragments appear to be little white or yellow lights streaming across the sky, but if you watch closely enough you may find that some of them seem to be a whole rainbow of colors. The scientists have reported that it’s just different components burning up as they enter the atmosphere, but there’s something undeniably magical about it. ”Nataniel!” Basyl shouted up the stairway to the second floor. “I’m reeeadyyy! Don’t you want to leave soon?”
He couldn’t help but be a little excited to actually get the evening under way. Even if they lived and worked together, it still seemed like private, together time was unusually hard to come by. Maybe for lack of trying? But honestly, they were both just so exhausted all the time… Nothing egregious had happened in the past few months, but it was always go, go, go, with hardly any real downtime. Hopefully tonight would be a little different. Still a ‘go’ to a place, but it should be nice and quiet for their little camp expedition.
Just one night out under the stars with a reported meteor shower as a backdrop. The area was a little forested patch on Nataniel’s parents’ property, and if they settled somewhere near the bank of the pond, they’d be able to see the sky. It was private, and it should be beautiful. Basyl was so hopeful.
It was already evening when they’d scheduled their departure. They’d both had work earlier in the day, and Nataniel had work again tomorrow, so they wouldn’t be sleeping in or anything. Basyl couldn’t help but wonder if it really would be all that relaxing when they were still practically on a timeclock, and maybe Nataniel would actually feel more rested if they stayed at home and just made a nice dinner… He didn’t want his boyfriend to have a shitty work day tomorrow…
But that was just his indecisiveness warring with the plans they’d already made. Nataniel was a grown man who had absolutely no problem letting someone know when he wasn’t interested in something. This would be fine.
Basyl had been in charge of packing the refreshments for the night: a fruit tray, some champagne, more bottles of water than they probably reasonably needed (it was still summer; they had to stay hydrated!), some sweets because why not? And he carried the little basket on his arm as he hollered up the stairs again, “Come on! It’s already getting dark!”

He wasn’t big on natury, outdoorsy-type of outings, and Nataniel would have almost never suggested a trip even close to his parents’ home, let alone on their property. But if he and Basyl wanted privacy, they could hardly go somewhere like the park. Given the natural event, everyone would be there. They could’ve rented a camp location, but his parents’ place was free, and there for sure wouldn’t be other campers nearby. They could power up and appear on literally any rooftop garden in the city- but their auras might make them a target for anyone out seeking a fight.
This was just the easiest and best solution.
Nataniel had put himself in charge of making sure they had whatever amenities they needed. They weren’t planning on cooking or swimming, so he’d tried to pack lightly. A tent for cover, a pair of light, summer-weather sleeping bags, a few battery-powered lanterns, matches in case they wanted a fire, despite the temperature. He hoped to not need much more than that for the few hours they were out. If they did, he supposed he would teleport to retrieve it, or they could just walk up the hill to ask Nataniel’s parents.
He’d thrown on a tight black t-shirt and dark jeans with little silver stud buttons, with the end of his pant legs tucked into dark boots, and a short chain lanyard hooked by his keys and crimson star charm dangling out of his pocket. Hardly appropriate forest-wear, but they had to take the bike for the drive over to his parents’ house, and he wasn’t wearing shorts for that.
Slinging the handles for the bag of tent and the bag with the sleeping rolls over his shoulders, Nataniel headed down the stairs.
“I hardly kept you waiting,” he informed Basyl lowly as he didn’t even pause on his way to the door. “And there is hardly reason to rush. It will be there all night.”

Basyl’s expression lit the second he saw his boyfriend appear at the top of the stairs, and before Nataniel could make it too far by him on his way for the door, Basyl snagged him by the arm to get his attention and slow him down, and tugged. It did more to propel himself forward than it did to drag Nataniel backward, but either way, Basyl was happy to catch him in a sweet kiss at the foot of the stairs, heart all aflutter from the excitement of their outing, and eager to share his joy.
He quirked the other man a toothy smile as his eyes roved down and up over the tight ensemble, only barely hampered by the luggage, and his hands weren’t far behind. “I love the whole, uh- 90’s anime b-bad boy aesthetic?” He offered teasingly, settling back on the balls of his feet to inspect his partner.
But they were both carrying armloads of junk, and there was no reason to hang out in the hallway when they could be on their way.
Feeling excited, and giddy- and maybe a tiny bit reckless?- Basyl sent Nat back on his way with a swat to his rear, emitting a whoop! of an exclamation as Basyl dove forward, past Nat and toward the door to escape.

Nataniel could hardly even fathom that there might be a person alive who didn’t want to swoon over Basyl’s sweet smiles and excited fidgeting. How someone so prone to excessive movement and flighty little rodent-movements could make Nataniel feel an easy peace, he didn’t understand. But Basyl just had to smile at him, and Nataniel felt as if the world had lost an edge. “You are the one who wanted to hurry along,” Nataniel reminded him as Basyl tugged his arm, but that didn’t stop him from reciprocating the kiss, or for the corners of his lips to edge up in an almost-smirk at the comment.
“These are my ‘getting laid’ clothes,” Nataniel retorted, barely pausing in his stride as they headed outside.
He packed their bags and basket into the storage crate on the back of his bike, swapping them out for the jackets and helmets they’d wear for the ride. His parents still lived in town, maybe a twenty minute ride away, if taking into account city speed limits and any other traffic caused by the meteor shower. It would surely be fully dark by the time they were settled in on a dry spot near the pond, with tents pitched and sleeping bags rolled out beneath them, food set out for snacking, with only lit lanterns and the stars to see by.
And it was.
By the time they’d arrived and situated the makeshift camp, moon and stars hung in the sky. Any city lights were obscured by the surrounding trees, leaving the pair in comfortable darkness. Nataniel would consider this quite a “late” night, as anything after 8PM was. The flurry of movement and activity and setting everything up had kept him awake, but as soon as he was on his back on a sleeping bag, looking up at the clear sky over the pond, it became significantly more difficult to keep his eyes open.
