Fireflies are mating, so this isn't uncommon in itself; in the past few days you've probably seen hundreds of fireflies. What makes these lights so unique is that they seem to change color; you might see a blue one, a green one, a red one. They flicker randomly, and something just seems off with them. If you come into contact with one, you will find yourself with a strange electric jolt. They cannot be caught, and will flicker away if you pursue too aggressively. This isn’t the first time they’ve appeared in Destiny City, but no one’s been able to tell where they came from or where they’re going. No matter how quickly you chase them, they always seem to disappear before you can find any answers.

She was sitting on her front porch, in a chair with one leg pulled in and a tablet resting against her leg. A cup of coffee sat on the small table next to her as she read outside in the warmth that night brought. It wasn't sweltering, and she found herself not minding it so much with the breeze that occasionally swept through, ruffling her hair that was growing out. All in all, Rin looked very comfortable if you could see her. She was lit by the glow of the tablet, and that was it. There was no porch light on or bug zapper. Every now and then, Rin thought she'd see a flash of color that wasn't the normal yellow/white glow of fireflies. Maybe it was the heat finally getting to her. The central air was no match against the heat of the day, especially when the power wasn't reliable during those hours either. "Hm..." Rin finally looked up, thinking she saw a flash of blue and was now just staring out at the driveway and the street. Was she seeing things?

The first thing Daire had done when Rin gave him her address was send her an anonymous bouquet of flowers. The second thing was show up uninvited.
He had the unique ability to creep around silently, while simultaneously managing not to draw suspicion. Even though he was wearing nearly all black tonight, the fact that he was also equipped with a picnic basket made him infinitely less intimidating. He was whistling, a friendly little tune he seemed to be making up as he walked alone, and he used that to announce his presence so he didn’t just jump out of the darkness and scare her.
…Although, it did sound a little fun.
Rin was easy enough to make up on her porch; the light from her tablet was enough to recognize her.
“Oh, good. You’re up,” he announced, despite it being far too early for him to have considered going to bed.
He stopped just in front of the steps up to her porch and stood, one hand on his hip while the other gripped the basket handle. “Have you had dinner already?”

Admittedly, Rin did jump when the whistling first started. Just a tiny bit. To anyone looking it might look like she just twitched for a moment versus flinching, but it felt like she jumped three feet in the air. Her one dark blue eye was gazing out when the whistling came closer, and her head tilted as she rested it in one of her hands, elbows on the arms of the chair she was settled in. Rin had opted for a flat black eyepatch today, nothing adorning it. When it was Daire who'd appeared with the whistling, her grim expression changed to a fond one; lips curling, brow easing. "It's not that late," she said, glancing at the time on her tablet before putting it face down on the table. "No, I haven't. I was going to go in and start something after I had finished the chapter I was reading." She had noticed the basket in his hand. As always, he looked very good in all black. It fit him well. Still, she was curious about adding some color when he wasn't.... working. File that away for later. She'd need to learn his birthday to get him something appropriate. A flash of color drew her attention away from Daire for a split second and then it was gone. Ah well. She looked back at him before motioning him to join her. There was another chair or a swing he could sit on.

Daire couldn’t help but laugh when her expression changed, when she realized it was him. “Well, don’t bother.”
He looked as though he’d been ready to help her up and escort her somewhere, but he saw no reason to reject her offer. He sat in the seat nearest to her and held the basket in his lap. “I was going to invite you to a picnic by the river, but I suppose here’s good too, if you like. There’s about a dozen places off the top of my head, places I’d like to take you. If we don’t go tonight, it just means I’ve already got a spot picked out to take you the next time I want to whip up a picnic. But I wanted to surprise you. If you’d already eaten, I packed some dessert, too. I came prepared.”
He flashed her a grin he was sure she could see even in the darkness. “I brought some candles, too. You know, to set the mood. But the fireflies are out tonight. I thought that was pretty special. And you are too, so it seemed like a good pair.”

"Oh, well, I wasn't expecting to stay long, anyway," she said, biting her lip. Rin did feel a bit guilty, even asking him to sit. "But the more you're saying, the more I want to go on this," her voice trailed off as she thought of her next words, "date?" Ah, that felt foreign to her, but it elicit some butterfly effect in her stomach that she wanted to squash down. Candles to set the mood, a picnic at night, it was honestly very romantic and she hadn't been prepared for it. He was flattering her again, calling her special and what was she supposed about it? Her face went a bright red, thanking whatever God was up there it was dark and not as visible. Slowly, she rose up and dusted herself off from the nonexistent dust, and put her hands behind her back. "I'll follow you if you'd like to lead the way to this... very special spot you picked out. I really can't let your thoughtfulness and preparation go to waste." That would be rude, and really, she was trying to shake that reputation.

“Date, yes. Ideally.” Daire leaned back in his chair and grinned shamelessly. He pushed himself up and swung the basket over one arm before offering his free hand to her. A little star charm jingled when he moved.
“I’ll make it worth your while, though. I promise I won’t make you walk too far. Although, if you get tired, I could always carry you.”
He was obviously only partially teasing; he seemed like he might have enjoyed giving her a ride there.
“I’ve been thinking about you quite a bit, recently. Have you been taking care of yourself?”

She noticed the brightly colored star charm but said nothing, only smiling to herself. Rin took his hand, trying not to let her face catch fire like it was desperately trying to do. "A walk is good. So if it is a little walk, I don't mind..." It wasn't like Rin was ready for a hike, but a simple walk should be fine enough. Then his remark about carrying her, and the shorter woman shook her head hard, hair fluffing out even more as she did that. "Ah, I'm fine! I don't need to be carried. I might be small, but I can do a lot of physical labor and activity." He'd managed to fluster her with that, and his further admission made her look up at him before nodding. "I think so. I finally managed to clear out the last of Kip's things.." It had taken her years to slowly put that part of her life in boxes. She had everything saved in storage for him. Rin doubted Kip would come back for any of it, but if he did she would have it ready for him. "So the house is now all of my decoration and things..." She still came home to an empty house, but she no longer had those small reminders of something that could have been. "I was going to ask if you've stayed out of trouble, but the fact you're here and not behind bars speaks for itself." Now it was Rin's turn to tease.

Daire seemed relaxed, completely complacent. Honestly, he seemed like he was glowing, like he was thriving off of all of this.
“Me, behind bars? Impossible. I behave myself while someone’s looking. Most of the time.” He laced fingers with her to keep their hands comfortable locked, and swung them a bit, gently, while he began to lead her.
“I believe you’re capable of doing anything you put your mind to. Small women are the most dangerous ones, I think. They’ve got all that power in such a little form, it can be very scary. Very attractive, too. Sounds like you’ve had a more productive day than I have. I was poring over old documents and have been trying to translate what I have begun to suspect is simply gibberish.”
He sighed, but there didn’t seem to be any bite behind it.
Ahead of them, the little glowing lights seemed to slowly grow in number.
