Quote:
The Meteor Shower (3) : It wouldn’t be a star festival without a meteor shower! Right on time, a beautiful array of shooting stars graces the night sky. This time of year is unnaturally clear and it’s incredibly easy to see the stars. Most meteor fragments appear to be little white or yellow lights streaming across the sky, but if you watch closely enough you may find that some of them seem to be a whole rainbow of colors. The scientists have reported that it’s just different components burning up as they enter the atmosphere, but there’s something undeniably magical about it.

Like clockwork, the Star Festival came back around to the streets of Destiny City. Little odd magical effects cropped up around the city, the merchant was back in town, and right on time... the meteor shower. Mourite rested on the roof of the astronomy building at DCU and watched the stars cross the sky. A whole year had passed since the last time he'd seen them, since Dinara - Danalite - had come back into his life. He'd shared with her the gravesite of his mother, gotten the whispering stone he now ran his thumb over like a stim toy.

While DCU might be out for normal instruction, summer classes were still a thing, and Mourite always took at least one or two summer classes. Kept him in the housing around campus, and out of his father's house. He'd done a really good job at making his father think he lived in one building, when he lived on the other side of campus. Someday, he'd sever all ties with that man. Or maybe just... push him into the Rift and let the youma have him.

Or just pull his starseed yourself, coward.

The Captain let out a sigh and lifted the whisper stone to the sky to stare through it at the falling stars. It was more noticeable now, but they called to him. Somehow. Mourite wanted to reach out and pluck one from the sky above and keep it to himself. His mother's grave even had a star carved into it. There was just.... something out there. Something he needed to see. Something he needed to know.

The stone vanished into his fist as his wolverine claws extended. A flare of order went up near him, a bit more powerful than him.

"Can I help you, White Moon?" he asked cautiously.

Would that he knew that the signature came from the same person who brought him into the fold years ago...

Truthfully, Sava hadn’t been going out much lately. It wasn’t for lack of interest…not…not entirely she just. Hadn’t enjoyed what had happened at that battle last year and taking a break had seemed the best idea but…

Something about tonight had drawn her out again, and when she felt the aura of a Negaverse Captain over at the campus of DCU she drew in a breath and made her way over, pausing when she heard a voice that sounded…

Almost vaguely familiar. At least. It sounded as though it should have been familiar.

“Not sure if you can help me or not, just wanted to see what you were up to, obviously it’s not no good but…”

When the Captain finally came into view, the Knight sucked in a startled breath, her eyes widening against her will. “...Mourite.”

He had gotten stronger, and on one hand…she was terribly proud of him…yet on the other…

“You look good.”

Maroon eyes shifted as he sat up, weapon still drawn, and turned to face the knight who spoke. Who knew his name. Who recognized him. Warning bells rang in his head, heckles rising. How did this knight know him? Know him enough as Mourite to recognize the change in his power? He faced Sava, weapon defensively between them.

There was something... familiar about her. The curls of multicolored hair, maybe? The way she looked at him, perhaps? It couldn't be the stars in her hair or the white of her uniform or the starlight in her eyes.

It most definitely wasn't the sudden pang of longing he felt when seeing the Cosmos knight, a longing he hadn't felt when Danalite was still Dinara. It was something that had flared around that other cosmos knight too.

A longing to be made of stardust.

"Do I know you?" he asked, cautiously. She, like the other knight, didn't seem threatening or out for his blood. Just. Surprised. Maybe this one was a traitor? He lifted the wovlerine claws up a little higher, pointing towards her heart.

"Are you a defector?"

Sava hesitated, wincing slightly with the question, but…it was better that she wasn’t recognized. Better if she kept it all to herself. Better if she didn’t let the other side know she had left. Wasn’t that what she had wanted?

It was but.

But he was one of hers. One she had brought in. One that…she had been nurturing.

…And then she had left him.

Drawing in a deep, slow breath, Sava nodded. “I was General Cavansite, Mourite. Yes. I am a defector. Kind of…a lot to take in, hm?”

Her eyes watched his weapon for a moment, feeling slightly wary but…honestly, Sava didn’t think he would actually hurt her. He might be a Captain now, but there was obviously good in him. If there had been good hiding inside of Sava herself, then there was obviously good in Mourite.

“I’ve missed you. I’m glad that we get a chance to speak again. Look at you too, a Captain now! I'm very proud of you.”

Mourite blinked as the image of Cavansite super imposed itself on top of the knight, filling in the holes and pulling away the glamour shifts in her appearance. General Cavansite. Stars above, he hadn't... seen her since... the last time the Negaverse put on one of those tournaments, if that.

"You've been gone... a long time," he said, still a little struck that his own general had left the Negaverse. He lowered his arm, dismissing his weapon with a flick of his wrist. "When... when did you become a knight?"

Feeling surged in his chest, that she'd stepped into the light. Into a Cosmos knight of all things. Into that which called him home so. It wasn't anger or rage. Mourite didn't feel the need to lash out like a petulant child that she'd left, or that she'd become what the back of his mind told him was right.

He had to know, had to understand why, why this was the choice she made. Why the stars granted her light and stardust. Why they called him home.

Oh, oh good. Sava knew that he wouldn’t have attacked her…and the proof of that brought nothing but a profound relief to the Knight. Not that she wasn’t capable of defending herself but. It would have been difficult against her former lieutenant.

“About a year and a half now, I think…it. It all had to be done quickly, I would have tried to bring you with me if I would have had the time but…” Swallowing, Sava gave a soft sigh, moving a bit closer to the Captain and nodding to the spot next to him before she sat down, drawing her knees to her chest. “I hadn’t heard from you for a while, and I had thought one of my subordinates had died. It. Was a lot. I…ended up picking up another one, got punished with a youmaglia for thinking about purifying and. One thing led to another, and here I am. But. How are you?”

She looked up, giving a soft, imploring smile. “You’ve grown up! I was so worried something had happened to you too…”

He watched her as she sat down next to him, and he slowly dropped down to sit again. Mourite quietly listened as she spoke. Sounded like she just... didn't have a great time of it, all things considered. He glanced away from her, looking back at out at the meteor shower.

How was he. Stars, was that a loaded question. On one hand, he'd been given more power, he'd brought his girlfriend into the fold. He had an actual weapon at this point. For the most part, he managed to avoid his father, in and outside of the Negaverse.

On the other, though? He felt a wanderlust he couldn't explain. He felt like something was missing. He was terrified his father would find him at any time.

"I'm... " he sighed, flopping backwards with a huff. This knight was Cavansite, once upon a time. She was still his general, even if she dripped of order and light. "Brought my girlfriend into the fold. She was a Cosmos knight like you. It's great. She looks amazing in black, and has settled into her role nicely. "

The 'but...' hung in the air like a speck of starlight.

"Keep finding myself staring at the stars. Wanting to pluck one out of the sky and hold it in my hands. Like... like something's missing. Nothing should be missing. I have power, I have a wonderful girlfriend. I have a decent life..." he said softly, reaching up with a hand towards the sky above. "So why do I feel like there's something out there... for me."

The Chaos in him roiled at the thought and he winced a little. His fingers twitched slightly. Stars it was stupid to think about it. He was a Negaverse Captain, nothing more. The fact that he even was contemplating this? Danalite would murder him.

So why couldn't he stop thinking about it.

“If you ever want to visit the stars, I can take you, you know. I’ve been up there. To my Wonder. To Sava. Only once so far but, I’d be happy to go again…that.” Sava gave a soft sigh and drew her knees up, resting her chin atop of them and looking up at the sky for a long moment. “That’s another reason I had really started to think about it. I would visit the wonders of people. Two of them that I can think of. The first one…It…wasn’t the best. It was the Wonder of my former mentor but…she didn’t like me much and I was terribly uncomfortable but…”

A quick sideways look at Mourite, and a small smile.

“You know I always had a special hatred for Cosmos Knights. They always bothered me. Always rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe that was just the Chaos in me trying to not let me see what I could be. Would be. But. I met one and she took me to her Wonder several times…it’s nice up there. Relaxing. It’s nice to just know that you’re safe. That the world can’t get you. Can’t hurt you…”

He had pushed his girlfriend into corrupting, that…that was a worrying thought.

“If you wish to see the stars, I can help. And if you ever…ever want a chance to find your own path…I can help with that too, Mourite. I may not be your General any longer but…I do still care about you. Want the best for you.”

Mourite was quiet for a long time, staring at the stars above. Would it be wrong to just go... once, maybe? See how it was. See if it satisfied the calling in his chest. Maybe he just needed to go to the stars, settle his soul, and then he could go back to his life and never have to think about it again. He could become a fierce General along side Danalite, fight the White Moon and eventually just eliminate his father entirely from his life.

He held the stone up to his ear, on his opposite side of Sava, and let out a sigh as his mother's voice filled his mind.

... For her. Mourite would go, just once, for her. She would have wanted him to see the stars. Her tomestone had a star etched into it that eerily reminded him of the Cosmos symbol.

His fingers closed over the stone and he finally looked at Sava again. "I... would like to go. Soon, once the fall term starts up." Mourite's voice was quiet and reserved, but not tentative. Fall term at DCU meant he was further out of his father's reach, he was generally busy with course work, and could get away with not patrolling or gathering energy for a few hours. Plus, easier excused for when Dana eventually asked.

She'd probably kill him if she knew he went to a Cosmos knight wonder. Hopefully, she'd never find out, as this was going to be a one time thing. Just the once, then never again.

He ignored how his heart clenched at that thought.

“Then we’ll set a date. How about some time in October? I know that’s not terribly soon, but it will give us both enough time to prepare and it’ll make sure that you’re not overwhelmed by school, say…the tenth or so? That should be a good night, and…we can meet back here.”

Perhaps by then she could have really fixed up her Wonder a bit too so he wouldn’t be too terribly disappointed in it.

“I’ll meet you here at seven on October the tenth.”

Sava was grinning, and it was obviously already decided for her…this was the plan…and if Mourite didn’t want to show up, he didn’t have to but…

Still. Sava would be here waiting for him.

…She would always wait for him. It was her fault she was involved in this, and if she could work to get him out, she would.

Reaching out, she ruffled his hair and gave an encouraging smile. “You truly do make me proud, Mourtie. I’ll see you soon, okay?”

It was okay, and she didn’t want to be told otherwise so she left before he could.
