Quote:
Heatwaves (11) : An unfortunate dry spell has come over Destiny City, and a heat wave has made it all but unbearable. The heatwave is only projected to last for a week but it’s been rough. Plants are wilting, people are wilting. The city is experiencing blackouts, which isn’t helping. Thankfully, the reservoir is always open. Just, crowded. It might just be the worst part of the summer. People are passing out regularly, and the hospitals are getting too many admissions to keep up with. It’s probably just the heat and not anyone up to anything nefarious, right? Better stay hydrated and try to keep cool, and maybe avoid everyone in weird costumes, just in case.

Gods, it was so hot... unusually so for DC this time of year, and Ida was particularly aware of that fact. Her skin felt sticky, she was tired and grouchy, and even her fuku couldn't fight off the heat, gathering a wet spot in her lower back and where the scarf hung around her neck. No breeze seemed to help... it was just more hot air when it brushed past you, smelling of heat and dry earth.

All day, she had been treating people at the emergency room for heat stroke. Many of them were unhoused, which was no surprise, but there were plenty of people who worked outside, or in warehouses that struggled to pump enough AC into their cavernous spaces to really cool anything down. No one ever drank enough water, but even if they had, she wasn't sure how much it would have helped. She'd spent hours prepping IVs of liquids to re-hydrate people...

She'd almost skipping patrolling tonight. The only benefit to the sun going down was that it was no longer beating down on you, but it didn't seem to affect the heat much. She felt that even powered up, when the temperature affected her less than it would have as a civilian. Surely it was too hot for anyone to be out making trouble... and she certainly hadn't run into anyone yet. The park had been her last resort, a hope that the greenery and the trees would have helped lower the temperature a bit. But even here, with the sound of the fountain in the pond playing softly into the dimness, she felt like she was baking.

Familiar path led her boots to a familiar place before she had really thought about it and Ida slowed as she saw Hver's bench came into view. As she paced towards it, she felt the lingering sadness welling up, and with the crankiness brought on by heat, there was no small amount of betrayal and abandonment in that feeling. It was a stupid way to feel, and she knew it was stupid... but feelings weren't always reasonable things, and they had a mind of their own.

Kerberos was so, so glad for his very skimpy costume, because he was pretty sure that if he was wearing even slightly heavier fabric, this heat would be death. And he was only being slightly facetious about that.

But, still, he made his way to the bench in North End Park, because the more consistently he was there, the easier it would be for people to find him. People who needed help, people who wanted to make trouble--whatever kind of comers, Kerberos was willing to meet them.

There was someone else, tonight.

"Ida!" He greeted her with a wave, smiling in spite of the discomfort. Yeah, it was definitely miserable out, but...still, it was good to see her. "You doing alright? Your fuku looks a lot warmer than mine" He grimaced, faintly.

The figure on the bench was not a pale, lovely woman with pearlescent hair, and the voice that called out to her in greeting was not the one she remembered. It was familiar though, and it brought Ida back to the present with a snap.

This was not Hver's bench any more. Kerberos had taken over that job of waiting for people to talk to, to be a resource for. She always avoided this part of the park the way she had when Hver had been here. That was likely why she so often forgot he was here instead.

Putting a smile on her face that she didn't feel, Ida waved in returned, picking up her pace to join him.

"Sorry, I sort of forgot where I was today. I didn't interrupt anything did I? I try not to come around so I don't scare anyone off, but I had a lot on my mind and I wasn't paying attention to where I was going. This heat doesn't help... it makes it hard to want to do anything." She said as she pushed her hood back, gathering up her thick hair to bare her neck for a moment and let, marginally, cooler air hit the damp skin.

It was strange, to stand here with someone who knew that there sohuld be someone very different on this bench. It had been Hver's for so long--Kerberos still wasn't entirely sure it felt like it was his own.

Still. He was doing his best, he liked to think, and mostly that just meant being here. For whoever showed up, even if they were on his own side.

"You didn't. Haven't seen anyone out, much, probably because it's so gross." He stood, and sighed, stretching. "Ugh. I'd been thinking of checking in on my planet, just to get out of this--though, come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen your world. What's it like? More temperate than Earth?"

The purple senshi blinked for a moment and then smiled, giving a loose and easy shrug.

"Ida is a very mild place, even in its weather. From what I've seen, and what I remember, it doesn't rain very often, and the temperatures tend to stay in the mild range. Storms are even rarer. I think its because the asteroid is so small. It worked well when it was a giant hospital. The gentle climate was good for people convalescing." She said.

Perhaps something like that made Ida a bit of a boring place. It didn't have the extremes that other planets had, just gentle weather nearly all the time, with people who tended to be gentle as well. A pastoral place, lovely but lacking the excitement of other places.

"You're welcome to come and visit it sometime... If you wanted to get away from the heat tonight, even, I'd be happy to welcome you. But I don't want to take you away from your planet if you need to visit it. I just... wouldn't mind having a little company." He didn't need for her to unburden herself all over him, but it was hard to keep the wistfulness out of her voice. He wasn't necessarily the first person she would have sought out for company, but... he was here, and this place called up memories that made her feel both more welcoming, and more lonely, than any other place would have. Hver's spirit still lingered here, and that sense of peace she had always carried with her.

Kerberos nodded. "My world is like that. Haven't noticed many drastic seasonal changes, which is nice. Though it's always night, there--maybe not surprising since it's on the outer edge of the Solar System."

It was probably obvious as soon as she suggested it how eager Kerberos was to see her world. He might as well have had a wagging tail, for all that he perked up and grinned.

"Absolutely, I'd love to go. There's nothing like getting to see everything the universe has to offer." He extended her a hand. "I visit my world all the time--I'd be happy to show it to you, more, now that it's healing from that Chaos infection. There are bunnies, these days."

He wondered if they would find any animals on Ida, and if they did, what those animals would be like. He wondered exactly what her world was, and wondered at all the things that had aligned to mean that the two of them were going to space, hand in hand, as friends instead of enemies.

Dark eyes widened as Ida considered a place where it was always night. Of course, it had been dark when Ida had visited the first time, helping Kerberos to defeat the seed of chaos on his world. But it was always like that? How strange... Her own asteroid ran on a slightly shorter day than Earth. Often, it was day when she visited and part of the joy of her visits was the warm, gentle sunlight. The way the grass smelled, warmed by it. In the winter, when Destiny City was grim and dark, it was an oasis of light. It was hard to imagine how it would feel to go to a place that was always night.

"I would really love to see your world again now that its free of the chaos." She said as she took the hand he offered. It felt pleasant, comfortable. A touch that she could enjoy, for the short time this would take. In her free hand, she pulled her phone from subspace and thumbed it open. Tightening her grip on Kerberos with a gentle squeeze, she cast him a glance and a small smile as she hit the button and felt the movement take them, pulling them across the galaxy.

They landed in a bright, grassy field, flowers in a rainbow of colors nodding their heads among the stalks. A great shadow covered them, falling from the massive trees that stood at their backs. Above, the sky was an endless, deep blue, as bright as any summer sky on Earth. The sound of wind chimes came faintly as a breeze teased past, sending the grass to swaying with a soft rustling noise. A butterfly, bright purple in color, fluttered past, trailing a dust that sparkled in his wake. Comfort seeped into Ida with the coolness of the shade and the energy that washing up her legs from the ground, easing the tension inside of her that always grew when she was away from this place.

Turning, she released Kerberos' hand to gesture around them, her smile bright and welcoming.

"Welcome to Ida."
