The meeting with Carterhaugh hadn’t resulted in as much energy as Aegirine really needed for the week, so she was out again, hand laid lightly on a passed out drunk who slept heavily on a park bench. The ball of energy she collected grew larger and larger, and she watched it with some fascination. She would be like this. Easy to pick off, easy to drain. But…most of the time she didn’t go outside when she was this far gone on alcohol.

Still. It was distracting enough that she didn’t notice the order signature coming up on her until it was far too late to do more than cut off the flow of energy and slip the gathered stuff into subspace, and spin around to face whoever it was that had come upon her.

Aegrine’s eyes narrowed slightly. “What? Are you just here to stare at me, or do you have something to say?”

God, if she only had the time to go and pretend she was a tree again. No matter how poorly it worked.

With Imhotep off on some kind of industry work nonsense, Promethei found himself picking up the slack that evening on their usually teamed patrols. It made it easy to deal with raff when they were out together, but considering he had made a lieutenant see stars as a civilian, he wasn't exactly afraid to take on the job himself.

Perhaps that lieutenant hadn't considered him a threat until he clocked him and ran the ******** away, but...

He didn't care about the difference, not when he felt an agent first and spotted her second, tucking something away and turning around to face him, while standing in front of a passed out guy. This aura sensing was ******** annoying. How was he supposed to get the jump on any of these people when they could sense him, too? And they could teleport on top of it all.

She really had the audacity to ask if he'd just stare at her?

"No," because the one who really had nothing to say wasn't with him, but he wasn't interested in staring or conversation.

That was the only warning she got before he pulled his fist back to punch her in the face.

Aegirine was just about to make another retort and just walk away, when suddenly the uncultured a** drew his arm back and punched her, right in the eye.

Stumbling, the lieutenant reached up, holding the spot he hit and felt her eye streaming sudden tears. What…this. Had been an utterly unprovoked attack. This…

Her heart was beating frantically, fear and adrenaline pumping through her system it…

Well it was just too much.

“Are you kidding me? What gives you the right to simply go around punching people? Do you have no respect for others? Or are you such a brute that you simply don’t care?”

And she had no true way to do much of anything. Her weapon was useless…she was…

But then, the whole topic of starseed collection that Larimer had mentioned slowly eased into her mind. But…

Well. She could do that, maybe. If she could get close enough. Taking his starseed would…shut him up at the very least…

Promethei, for his part, cracked his knuckles and positioned himself, ready to swing again if he needed to. He watched her carefully, watched as she stumbled back and cried automatically from the pain, but also noted that she wasn't leaving, either.

Her words managed to draw laughter out of him.

Was she kidding?

"A brute? Could say that to a member of the faction that goes around draining people of their energy like it's their ******** right." His head jerked toward the guy on the bench to make it crystal clear what he was referring to. Simply? He would rather just ******** be at home, or working on some new theories, but--

Maybe he could have cut that at--

"Maybe you should leave."

He showed his fist again as a warning.

Anger burned in Aegirine’s chest, and her hand moved swiftly, sinking in to Promethei’s chest. Oh…that…was a rather uncomfortable feeling, wasn't it? Though, when her fingers wrapped around something cool and firm, she swallowed and realized that this must be it. The Starseed. She could take it. Rip it out. End this Page forever but…

She squeezed it, gently, but enough that she hoped he felt it.

“Maybe you should leave. And maybe you should think before you simply act. He was already passed out when I found him. He’ll sleep off the energy I took. He’s drunk. I didn’t take enough to do more than make sure he’ll sleep through the night. Maybe you should make sure that whoever you’re going to punch isn’t actually being a complete d**k! I’m all for self defense, but…not bullying.”

Squeezing the small, precious gem again, Aegirine slid her hand out, leaving the starseed behind. “I think you should piss off. And I’ll leave too. And maybe you can think about not being such a d**k!”

That was extremely uncomfortable.

If anything, it cemented in his mind his opinion of the Negaverse. Anyone who had the power to touch souls must have been evil. Was that what she was touching? It wasn't his heart, even though he felt his heartbeat stop and stutter. What else would be there? Must have been the starseeds he had heard of, read about, what Chaos had been infecting at the alien generator s**t. It was hard to find anything to justify this kind of ability, this kind of squeeze of life force. They already took life energy, left people unconscious and on the ground for other people to find -- Diryas had found him, for instance --

What it sounded like she was giving him was a pile of excuses, and to be honest, he didn't care to hear out a single one of them, not while she had still taken what didn't belong to her and not while she was choking the life out of him. The ******** did he care what state this guy had been in before she showed up? He growled as his response to her, but that was in part because it was hard to say anything else.

If he didn't feel his life coalescing into a single point, it might have been hard to think at all.

This fight, this entire fight of Order against Chaos, was ******** unfair.

When she pulled her hand out, he took a second to catch his breath.

And that was when adrenaline kicked in.

He agreed he wanted to leave, but considering what he knew of the Negaverse and what she just ******** did, he didn't want her in any condition to follow him or do that to anyone else, either. "Sure. I'm the d**k when you're the one taking energy and touching souls."

He swung at her again, following that up immediately by lifting his leg to kick her away from him, bashing it into her ******** off."

She had let him go. Aegirine hadn’t taken the precious starseed, even though she knew it would have made Larimar proud, she hadn’t done anything to this Page. Nothing that hadn’t been warranted. Nothing that hadn’t been in retaliation for what he had done to her first.

The taste of blood was sharp in her mouth, and she had doubled over in pain from the kick, but…

There was nothing she could do. No more action she could take, and with a pained, grunt she sank to the ground, coughing and spitting a mouthful of blood from the split lip she now sported. Oh, Aegirine was angry and a new hatred was beginning to bubble up, not just for this Page…but for all of them. Perhaps…this wasn’t such a bad thing. If anything, it made her understand how much it mattered to get stronger.

And how she couldn’t quite let Carterhaugh make the wrong decision…if that Page decided that…they wouldn’t…join her. Then…

She’d simply get practice in taking a starseed for real.

Promethei watched as she keeled over, making sure she was down, making sure she was too busy nursing her own wounds before he let himself relax at all. Relax was, though, relative: his body was tense, his mind was ready to snap, and he would have stomped again at a moment's notice to keep her down.

How dare she.

He met that baleful look with one of his own, making his way over to the bench and hauling up the guy who absolutely smelled like alcohol. He might have been a drunk or, at least, currently drunk, but he didn't deserve to die or suffer out here.

He'd get him to a clinic or something.

Promethei kept his eyes on her as he retreated, only breaking into a run once he was certain she wasn't following and could turn away without ******** all of them.
