Youma. The most pathetic of the Negaverse's weapons. They were monsters, mindless, and even the ones that could talk seemed to only follow orders. They'd had a few experiences with them before they Awakened, and even after, youma mostly just made them sad.
Well. Sad in concept. Annoyed, in practice.
This one looked like a sort of long, flat, fuzzy crocodile, slithering and snapping at Carterhaugh's feet. It was jet-black, which they supposed offered it a sort of camouflage--it had actually bitten them on the leg when they first found it by stepping on its tail.
They had kicked it, instinctively, knocking it into a wall, and now it was quite angry, and they had ducked out of the alleyway and back onto the quiet, empty street in the hopes of the extra space making it easier to fight, and the streetlights making it easier to track.

Thank god the semester was over. Sadie was exhausted, and was absentmindedly watching a video as she made her way home, the thin wires from her earphones kept smacking lightly against her cheeks, and she wasn’t paying any attention to…well.
Anything.
Of course, when someone ran into her she looked up, utterly confused and about to offer an angry rebuke, Sadie’s eyes landed on the…thing that was apparently chasing after the one who had run into her. “What in the nine hells is that?”
Her voice was far too loud, the sound in her ears causing her to project more than she would have in normal circumstances. Still, Sadie yanked the earbuds from her ears and took a few steps back. “Did…it come from the sewers? Is this like…”
s**t, had she walked in on some indie film that was happening?
Sadie swiveled her head around, looking for cameras, for lights for…well. Anything that would signify that it was so…but…
Nope. Not a damn thing.

Oh, good. He had been on the other side of this, once--Camelot had rescued Asher from a youma, long before he was Carterhaugh. But here was some poor civilian who had literally stumbled into them, and she was now in very, very grave danger.
He slung an arm around her waist, carefully pivoting her so they were betwene her and the youma, and exhaled tensely.
"That," they said, "is a youma. It is a monster, it will try to kill you, and unless you are secretly magical--which your confusion makes me doubt--I would strongly recommend running. This is not a dream, it is not a prank, there are no lights or cameras."
The youma let out a horrible, guttural snarl, and Carterhaugh whipped around, wishing not for the first time that they had any kind of magic to use. The best they could manage was bending down, gripping it by the back of the scuff, and throwing it, again. This time, away from themself and the poor civilian.

Sadie couldn’t help the squeal of surprise that left her when she was grabbed and spun…and when her…savior? Her helper? The one who was fighting this…monster…picked it up and just threw it away, she took the moment to take a few steps backwards, though tripped over something that was thin and round just lying on the ********!” The cry was confused and filled with pain and surprise, but…she reached for whatever she had tripped on…most likely a stick or…a…windsock?
For a moment, she stared at the thing, and then blinked in utter confusion as she looked down at her arm, now covered in a long pink sleeve. There was fur at her neck and…
s**t.
“Um. Excuse me. Is um. This what you meant by secretly magical? Because. This just happened.”

Carterhaugh turned. His eyes fell on where the civilian had been, flicked over the Page in her place, and they sighed. Deeply, heavily, weightily.
Were they responsible for her now, in some way? They hoped not; certainly they hadn't exactly leaned on Læraðr, when they first awake. But she was her,e in front of them, and they had to do something.
"Yeah, this is exactly what I meant," they said. Their eyes flicked to the monster, which looked dazed from where it had impacted the ground. "You're a Page--in service to a planet. You've got a fancy new name and fancy new clothes, and it's your job to stop evil and fight monsters."
There, short version, enough for the moment. "I can give you a longer primer later. Help me destroy that thing. If we do enough damage to it, it'll crumble into dust."

For a moment, Sadie thought about smacking the stranger on the head hard enough to turn them to dust but, instead she just nodded and let her attention fully focus on the youma. “Yeah. Yeah all right. Sure. So hit it until it turns to dust and then we’ll go get some drinks and you can explain what’s going on. Seems fair, but I hope you know that you’re buying.”
Not that she couldn’t afford it but. She deserved to have them purchased on her behalf. After all…this sort of thing didn’t happen every day…but she attacked the youma with gusto, bringing the tip of the stick that held the windsock down repeatedly on the jointure of the creature’s neck, and gave a surprised, but rather pleased cry when the other…Page? Whatever. When they were right.
“...Seriously? It seriously did just turn to dust like it had good sense. Well. All right then.”
This was not how she had hoped to spend her day but.
Some things couldn’t be avoided, it seemed.

"Good job," Carterhaugh said, and they grinned. She was clearly decisive, and unhesitating, and they'd been smart to let her handle that thing. Even with a windsock.
"You'll run into a lot of these things," they said, "and they're all like this. Smack them around enough and they'll die. I think it might be easier if you use magic, but...as Pages, we are the unluckiest bastards in this war, and we do not get any of that."
They shook their head. At least it wouldn't always be that way.
"Anyway, I'm Carterhaugh," they extended their hand, politely. "It's nice to meet you."

She took hold of Carterhaugh’s hand and gave a small smile. “Sadie…” But…no, their name wouldn’t actually be Carterhaugh…that…
For a moment, the Page fell quiet and then chewed her lip. Targovishte. That’s the name that keeps playing in my head so I’m going to assume it’s mine. Um. Thank you for all of your assistance tonight. And thank you for not allowing me to freak out completely…even if I perhaps wanted to…a lot.”
Grinning slightly, Targovishte released her hand from Carterhaugh's. “Would you care to spend some time with me explaining some of the information I should know? I’ll buy us some coffee if you wouldn’t be too opposed.”

"Good to meet you, Targovishte," Carterhaugh said. What an interesting name--they would definitely remember it.
They let go of her hand, and beckoned her to follow.
"Coffee sounds great, and I'll be happy to give you as much information as I can." There were plenty of things to learn.
