Kayden did manage to make it home in one piece, and she did manage to polish off the half bottle of Jack that she had been looking forward to, and she did manage to send a rather drunken text to Anella around four in the morning.
Quote: Nelllllllie~!<3 Its your favorite cousin, Kayden!!!!! I imss you! I’m a little drunk I think youc an tell but I’m hoping that maybe you’ll come over tomrorwo? I’m. fineeeeee I promise I’m fine i just. Maybe am not so fine. I don’t know. Hope to see you! But not until after noon! XoXoXoXoXo
By the time the message was sent, Kayen had passed out, curled up in her easy chair, legs tucked up under herself. She was cradling the bottle of Jack in her arms, and her phone had fallen in between the arm of the chair and the cushion.
She had given Anella a key to the apartment, not that she remembered that fact but. She had. And as she was still soundly asleep at noon, it seemed as though it was a good thing for Anella to have been given.

Anella was not awake at four in the morning. She did not remember texting Kayden back.
As if
Quote: i]KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,;;
counted for a message.
She’d woken up with a phone impression on her face at ten in the morning.
It wasn’t even until after she’d made her own breakfast that she saw the open conversation with Kayden, and by then it was inching closer to eleven. She didn’t text back; her message to Kayden hadn’t been read and if she was still sleeping, Anella wasn’t going to call her. She’d hurried–scarfed down her breakfast, changed clothes, and then drove over to visit her cousin.
After she stopped to pick up some nice, greasy, hang-over style breakfast to-go. And a little extra for herself, because who even wanted to eat yogurt and fruit for breakfast, that was a scam. She couldn’t smell hashbrowns and sausage and not want some.
When she showed up on Kayden’s doorstep she didn’t even bother knocking; she unlocked the door and called softly, “Kayden? It’s Nell, I brought breakfast. You up yet?”

Kayden was not up. She was very much not up, but when she heard a voice in her apartment. Someone…was here?
She blinked slowly and rubbed her face, pausing when her empty bottle hit the bridge of her nose. “...What? I’m…over here. In my chair. Nell?”
The fuzzy memory of thinking about inviting her cousin over the night before slowly floated back into her mind but…why would she have actually…
“...I thought…ah. I didn’t realize that I had actually texted you…or did I call you? I’m afraid I might have been a little…mm…plastered, I suppose.”
Slowly, Kayden stood up and put down the empty bottle of Jack, glancing around for her phone, and then growing tired of looking. “...I’m pleased that you came to see me though. I haven’t…truly been very great lately. I’ve missed you.”

Anella grinned as she entered, plastic bag slung over one arm. When she stepped into the room, the smell of breakfast came with her. “You texted, I saw it this morning. Ignore what I sent you back, I think I was texting in my sleep. But I’m here now!”
Oh, too excited, maybe a little too loud. She hushed herself and came over to give her a gentle hug. “I’ll brought you some hangover food. Got a few drinks, too. Not alcohol, but there is orange juice, that always helps me.”
She rubbed Kayden’s back as she squeezed her. “What’s this about you not being great lately, what’s going on? We’ve been on different wavelengths for a little while now, we haven’t gotten to catch up. Has something happened? –Do you want to eat here or at the table? I’ve got you a whole styrofoam box of breakfast.”

Kayden hesitated, glancing around and finally giving up on trying to locate her phone, though pressed against her cousin in the hug. “...I don’t know. I thought I was doing better. I had stopped drinking so much. I had a job and I just thought…”
She swallowed, chewing her lip, wanting to simply unburden herself completely to Anella, but…that was impossible, so she just shrugged. “...I feel like I’m falling apart again. I had someone I was sleeping with. His name was Jack but he’s been gone for a few years and then…there was a girl I was kind of dating but. I just. Don’t know anymore. What’s the point of even trying. And I just…”
Kayden buried her face against Anella’s shoulder. “...I just. I’ve started drinking heavily again. And I know one day I’m going to do something I regret but. At this point…I simply don’t seem to care anymore.”

A frown settled on Anella’s face. She hadn’t seen Kayden in a while and hadn’t realized how badly off she was doing right now. Or earlier, even. “Hey,” she reassured, and kissed atop her head as she rubbed her back.
“Honey, what happened?”
Sleeping with someone, losing a girl, she understood, but this much loss? Anella wasn’t a professional, she wasn't sure she could be everything Kayden needed, but of course she was going to do her best. She’d support Kayden through anything, she just felt like she was getting thrown into the middle of a story and she didn’t want to mess anything up.
“If you’re going through something, I’ll be here for you. It’s going to be okay.”

“I don’t know if it will, Nellie. I. I’m really past the end of my endurance, I think. It’s all become too complicated and look, I’m even talking about it. That’s. That’s a clear indication that there’s something wrong.” Kayden wiped at her eyes, rather appalled that she was crying. That…wasn’t…what she wanted.
“...I don’t know what happened. I just. Every time I think things are starting to get on a better track, I’m wrong. I should simply stop trying, I think. Romance. Sex. It’s just not worth it. But.” She swallowed. “...Sometimes I think I should just pack up and go back home. But. I’m not sure I could handle being back in England. I really thought this city would be a new start. That I could get better but. I feel like I’ve only gotten worse…”
Finally, Kayden drew away from the hug, and wiped her eyes again. “...Maybe happiness is simply out of my reach. Or I should find somewhere else to go. But at least here I have you. Even if we don’t see each other often.”

Anella wasn’t willing to give up so quickly, and she just drew Kayden closer and rubbed her back while she spoke. When Kayden drew away, she still looked on worriedly. “Well, we can change that. I thought you were just too busy for me, Kay. Oh, not that I thought you were too busy for me, just that you were keeping yourself busy and living your best life. I had no idea you had all of this going on.”
She pressed her forehead to Kayden’s. “Happiness isn't out of your reach. It sounds like you’ve had a string of bad luck. You’ve fallen into a rut. We’ll get through this, you’re not alone. I’ve got your back. If your endurance has run out, borrow some of mine. Here,” she pulled out the styrofoam tray and opened it. “Can you eat a bit? I don’t want you to start today with a headache, and with all those tears you’re bound to get one. I can spend the day with you, we can figure things out. No matter what’s gone on, I’m here for you. I love you, I’ve got you. You talk about it as much as you want, I’m all ears. Don’t bottle it up. We’ll get this all sorted, we’ll get you back on the track for happiness.”

“I’m quite sure that whatever chance I had to be happy has long gone, but…I appreciate it…I…”
Kayden closed her eyes and relaxed slightly, resting her forehead against Anella’s. “I’m a lost cause…but I appreciate it…and I would like to spend the day with you…no. I wasn’t too busy. I just didn’t want to bring you down. You have everything I could have ever wanted…has she proposed yet? Have you proposed to her? You are still with her, right? Your Juniper?”
Living her best life. Anella was the one with the best life. The one with a life. There was no way in hell that Kayden would have gone and…ruined it with her despair. That wouldn’t have been any kind of fair. It would have done nothing but upset her cousin and…just…make life bad for the both of them. And that wasn’t Kayden’s goal. Not by a long shot.
“I hope not, unless you eloped…I do want to be your Maid of Honor…”

“Sweetheart,” Anella said softly, “You aren’t a lost cause. You’re having a hard time. I didn’t know before, but now that I do I can try to help. Juni and I are still together, I haven’t proposed. Or eloped. We’re happy how we are, we don’t have to get all worked up about planning a wedding or anything, yet. Maybe one day, but we’ve been saving up to move. Into a bigger place! Not leaving Destiny City. I love my little place, but the price keeps rising.”
She spoke in a gentle, soothing voice, and kept smoothing her hair.
“You’re not going to bring me down. We’re family, we look after each other. Do you want me to help you look into therapy, do you think that might help?”

Kayden hesitated and shrugged. “...Do you really think it would work? Therapy, I mean. I don’t really hold out any hope for it. It all seems…really touch and go. And I don’t know what they can do to sort out my issues…”
But…the more she spoke, the easier it felt for Kayden to keep talking. To keep letting Anella know what was going on.
The more she spoke…the less alone Kayden felt and…
Well. That was kind of nice, to be honest.
“...I’m so glad that you two are happy. Don’t…don’t let her get shot, okay? Please.”

“Well, we won’t know until we try, Kayden. Come on, let’s try to eat a little breakfast. Get your stomach feeling better. I’ve got all day free, we can sit and talk. I can help you look for someone. I can even go with you if you want. Whatever it takes, I’m here for you.”
She took her hand and gave it a firm squeeze. “You’ll get to be happy, too. Thank you for telling me. I didn’t know you were dealing with all of this. You’re strong, Kayden. I love you. You can do this.”
Even if her stomach was in knots and she was worried about her cousin, nothing was going to chase her away. She was going to do everything in her power to try and help her.
It didn’t matter if it was just one step at a time. They’d get there.
