Oh, it was perfect.

Zephyr was leaning in so closely to the display case, her nose was practically pushing against the glass, and her breath threatened to fog up her view of the prize she spied. Her lavender gaze was transfixed by a periwinkle cupcake decorated with ruffly ribbons of frosting and topped with an edible bow that looked almost exactly like the one she had recently seen atop the head of a certain newly-promoted Corporal.

Even though she did not care for them herself, she frequently brought Caelyna sweets to bring a smile to her face. This time, though, Zephyr figured her beautiful comrade deserved something special to honor her accomplishments in the Vanguard.

She clapped her hands with excitement, already anticipating the reaction this would get. Shooting back up to a standing position, she located the service bell and tapped on it, politely, once, and bounced on the balls of her feet as she waited for one of the human bakers to respond.

It wasn’t the first time that Leah was alone in the bakery, but she still…wasn’t a fan of being alone. Of course, Carlee would be down soon, her shift started in half an hour so she wouldn't be alone for too terribly long but…

Still. Acting human…being human was still…terribly difficult.

When the bell was rung, Leah drew in a breath and headed back out behind the counter, her face bright with a smile that was only…mostly forced. “Greetings! Welcome! What may I get for you today? Is there something special that you’re looking for?”

Her eyes landed on the customer and the smile relaxed into something more natural. At least…she looked happy. So there wouldn't be yelling humans today…which.

Was a true relief.

Zephyr beamed happily when the worker came out to greet her, and gave a quick wave in response before nodding enthusiastically, a motion that made her single plume of blue hair wave around this way and that in front of her face. Now she had been given an opportunity to once again use one of her favorite human tools: the Pen. She clicked it once, twice, then a total of five times before allowing it to meet the pastel-toned paper of her notepad:

Hello. Please give me the egregiously over-decorated light blue cup cake with the pointless bow. It is a gift for my friend. Thank You! :)

The note was slid across the counter with another nod, in Fae-Fae's familiar wide-lettered and loopy handwriting. She then dug into her overall pockets for her human wallet so she would be prepared for the upcoming transaction ritual.

Leah took the note, watching the customer rather fondly and feeling an ache in her chest as she was reminded of Fae-Fae. She missed her friend more than she wanted to admit, and felt tears struggling to p***k her eyes, at least until she read the note.

And for a moment, all she could think about the note was that the handwriting was reminiscent of Fae-Fae as well but then…then the words registered and shame fell on Leah’s chest with the force of a truck.

“...You…find it to be egregiously over-decorated? I…this is the first one that I have decorated on my own…it was done with a very good friend of mine in mind…how…could you say something so disrespectful? The cupcake is perfect, just like she is.”

It wasn’t often that Leah was happy to not have her found family around her…but at the moment, she was glad that they weren’t here to see her be rude to a customer. “If you think it is so egregious over-decorated…then I am afraid I do not have to sell it to you. Such words are unkind and hurtful.”

A quizzical look dawned on Zephyr's face, and her movements slowed to stillness, as she tilted her head in confusion at the human's response. She thought she had described the item she wanted accurately, so what was the offense? Furthermore, wasn't the expression of gratitude and offer of money enough to communicate that she was honest in her desire for it?

She'd even drawn a 'smiley face' to show that she was being friendly! Why was this human reacting so poorly?

She turned to her notepad to formulate her response.

I agree that it is perfect. That is why I chose it. It very skillfully matches my friend's aesthetic preferences. If this is your work, I am impressed! May I please buy it?

Leah took the next note and huffed, running the back of her hand over her burning, damp eyes and hoping that her weakness wasn’t communicated to this stranger. Carly, Nick and Caius belonged up here. Not her. She belonged with Arias in the back. Helping to bake.

She was no good with people.

With a small sniffle, she drew the cupcake out of the case and wrapped it carefully in a plastic container, before putting that into a small paper bag with handles. “Very well. But please do note that calling something ‘egregiously over-decorated’ is not the type of compliment that you may think that it is. And I am very put out by it. I am glad that you find it perfect…and I do hope that your friend enjoys it as well. I apologize for my outburst but. It very much hurt my feelings.”

Moving to the register, she rung up the cupcake and hesitated, grabbing one of the charms, a rabbit who wore the same bow, colored in the same colors as well. “Perhaps your friend would like this too? My brother designed it for me. After the cupcake. Or. Rather we did the designs together. He is very talented.”

Humans and their strange artistic sensibilities. Fae-Fae clearly had a lot more to learn about them. It was a good thing that this gift was for Caelyna; maybe her studies on human culture would be of use in helping her understand why her compliments had been interpreted as insults.

For now, her attention turned to the recommendation the worker had made. Her first instinct was to turn her nose up at the little thing, as she found humanity's strange and inaccurate pseudo-animal illustrations and constructions somewhat nauseating, but she didn't want to upset the human even more by showing her disgust. And it did match the cupcake so nicely... something Caelyna might appreciate, knowing her growing interest in humanity's charmingly pointless fashion arts.

So, she nodded approvingly, and opened her wallet to commence the transaction in earnest.

Leah gave a sigh of relief when the charm was accepted, and hesitated before just slipping it into the bag and not ringing it up alongside of the cupcake. She gave the stranger the total and hesitated. “We have a loyalty card, if you are interested. I am…I am supposed to give it to you anyway, but when you get so many punches, you will get a free item, so it makes life much more wonderful.”

She picked up the loyalty card and hesitated, using a hole puncher that was in the shape of a heart, and cut out three of the little cookie shaped markings, hanging it out to the customer. “We do hope to see you again soon. And if you require more nourishment that is not easily found, or have specific requests, you may send emails. I am normally one of the bakers in the back and I take my job very seriously.”

Holding out the bag, Leah hesitated. “I do apologize for the grumpy state of my words. I am missing my friends a lot more lately, and your writing reminded me of one, like this cupcake reminds me of another. I am…simply protective of those I miss. But. Thank you for your patronage. I hope that my attitude has not sullied the reputation of the bakery.”

Something about the way the baker was talking was oddly familiar, but Zephyr couldn't quite place what it was. The story she shared, however, was familiar in a much more direct way -- reminding the disguised Corporal of the Vanguardians who hadn't returned to them, and remained missing somewhere in Destiny City. She gave the human a look of sympathy and nodded softly, turning to a fresh page in her notepad one more time before accepting the bag.

I am missing friends as well. I hope you find yours soon. I will remember your lessons when I return here. Thank You.

In spite of the awkwardness that took place, she decided this particular bakery was worth visiting again. It would be worthwhile to have a source of diplomatic gifts to serve her mission... and the promise of an eventual free item was something she couldn't help but find enticing.

Leah took a look at the last note and sighed. “I hope that you find yours soon as well. Again, thank you for your patronage! I look forward to meeting you again!”

She watched as the customer left and felt strangely sad afterwards, but used her time to fix up the front of the bakery, making sure everything looked perfect for when the others came back…or when Carlee came down.

The customer had seemed nice and…honestly? Leah wished she had gotten her name.

Oh well. Perhaps next time!
