So they had exchanged texts so Rin could know where Daire lived. It was odd, at first, having to take her phone off of silent to make sure she got the messages. Her phone never pinged for more than emergency broadcasts, so there was no need for it to be on. Having friends, she supposed, would require a lot of adjustments. But she was meeting him at his house, and he was going to cook dinner for her. She did bring a bottle of wine, red, not the best, but not the worst either. She knew a little bit about wine to know this was a good gift, but she hoped he drank. Rin didn't think about asking while buying it. Ah, well. It was rude to go to someone's house without a gift. It was how she was raised. And it made her feel less awkward. She grabbed the bottle from the passenger seat of her car and took a deep breath before walking up to his door. She was in jeans and a nice shirt, nothing too formal. It was just a simple blue v-neck, short sleeve shirt with a subtle flower print in white. She knocked on his door, always opting to knock over a doorbell, and waited.

Technically, Daire did not live at the address he sent to Rin, but she didn’t need to know that he was borrowing it from a friend. He doubted she’d want to spent any time in the shack he used, and anyway–this place was so much more impressive.
It was a simple little cottage, with just enough vintage appeal to be charming, and it was decorated like it could have been used in the backdrop of any movie setting. It was clean and without any personal pictures, but most of the time this place was being rented out for visitors or people just looking for a break away from the busy city.
It was the perfect place to take a pretty girl for a nice, romantic little dinner.
Not that he had any intentions of cozying up to Rin too much, but he’d gotten her to agree to dinner and he was going to give her a meal worth the drive.
The house was rich with flavorful smells; he’d already set the table and dinner was nearly finished by the time she knocked.
Cheddar Bay Biscuits, roasted vegetables, a nice pair of steaks. It was going to be a good meal.
Daire was cleaned up and looking nice, nothing too formal for him. Black jeans and a nice, button down purple shirt. The sleeves were rolled up to his elbows and he was wearing a black apron that probably wasn’t the best thing to answer the door in, but what was he supposed to do–get food on his nice clothes? No, thank you.
“There’s my girl,” he greeted, giving her a quick look over as he stepped out of the way and gestured for her to come inside. “You’re right on time, dinner’s going to be ready in a few minutes. Come keep me company while I finish up. Did you find this place okay?”

If Rin had been walking when she'd seen him, she would have stopped. Honestly, he looked really good like this. Purple was a nice color on him, at least what she could see. The once-over made her shuffle her weight a little before she came inside as he offered. "Ah, I'm glad I wasn't late," she said, already looking around with her good eye. It was a nice home. Very similar to hers, just without the personal touches. Rin, at least, had fresh flowers in her home. While she had no images, she had paintings and little decorations. Over time, she had redecorated and rearranged her home. "I found this place alright. GPS is a lifesaver. There was a wreck on the way here, so I was rerouted..." Then she looked down at the wine in her hand and she made a soft noise. "I brought a gift. I hope you like red wine." From the smell in the house, the wine would go well with what he was cooking. Here she thought she would be too worried to eat. That more than likely wouldn't be the case. Normal home, and at least decent enough skills to want to impress someone with them. "Lovely home."

“Oh, thank you. For the wine, I can’t take credit for the home.” He accepted the bottle and raised it to examine before nodding approvingly. “This will go wonderfully with dinner. Perfect choice. Come in, get comfortable. Make yourself at home. I did.”
He flashed her a grin, as charming as he could manage–which seemed to come particularly easy to him–and gestured for her to come in.
“I wasn’t going to tell you right off the bat, but I don’t want to be dishonest. I’m just borrowing it. Mostly, I jump around. I don’t stay in the same place for long. But I’m house sitting right now and you can’t tell me this isn’t just a charming little backdrop. I should have told you to bring a swimsuit, there’s a jacuzzi out back.”
Although, they didn’t need swimsuits, he supposed. It just depended on how adventurous she felt like being. He was just happy she’d let him convince her to come to dinner. “The food, though, I’ll take full compliments for that. I hope you like it.”

She was surprised when he said it wasn't his home. Her brows shot up and her eye went wide. "Oh." She looked around again and just made a mental note. So where did he live? Rin was very curious now. It didn't feel like her place to pry, so she wouldn't. He went on to explain he jumped around and more curiosity nibbled at her. "It is a very charming little house, yes. Very generous of people to loan you houses. I suppose an Airbnb situation would be perfect for someone with no roots." Rin hoped she didn't come off as callous or cold. She wasn't trying to judge him. "Before.. Well, never mind. I can not say I know what it is like." She had a home with her parents from her life before. Then she was assigned to live with Haumea or Kip. He'd gifted her the house, deed, and all when he had left to find himself. He left for the Rift and she hadn't really seen him since. Maybe once or twice, but never more than a quick exchange of pleasantries. But she wasn't with him now. So she pushed him from her mind and focused on Daire. The mention of a jacuzzi had her wrinkling her nose a bit. Maybe if it had been his home she'd been more open to it. This was someone else's home and she didn't know how clean that was. "A shame," she said in a tone that was clear it wasn't a shame. "With as good as it smells, I don't see how I wouldn't." She wandered deeper into the house then, peering at items. It was giving her ideas for her own home. "I do have a question though," she said, turning back to face him. "Where did you learn to cook? I.... was left to fend for myself without knowing how. I can make things now, but... It isn't an activity I would say I enjoy. It isn't terrible, but ..." She shrugged lightly.

Daire didn’t seem to take any offense; he laughed and shook his head. “I’m a likable person, people give me things all the time. But just in case you were worried, I do actually belong here. No tricks this time, no surprises.”
Dinner was nearly finished, so he wiped his hands on his apron and started getting everything plated.
“Do you want to learn how to enjoy cooking? If you invite me over, I can come teach you. But I won’t withhold information from you, the secret is having someone to eat with. When I cook for myself, I microwave more often than not. Or make something simple. Grilled cheese, some soup. I started on YouTube, if we’re being honest. Just late nights, nothing to do. Ran into too many dead ends. Wound up taking a few classes at the community center to get the feel for it. Now, recipes are easy to follow. But I really only like to put in the effort if I get to see someone else enjoy it. If there’s something you want to make, we should plan a date. Maybe next time we can cook together.”

Rin did watch as he plated, taking notes on how he did things to make it look like he did more than slop it onto a plate. He made it look like she could actually take a picture of it and upload it to Twitter without getting reamed about how bad it looked. Not that she did that once. Not that it crushed her confidence and she never uploaded another image of her food ever. Leave it to people on the internet to pick out her insecurities and jump on them directly. Shaking that line of thought away, she listened to him as Daire offered to help teach her to cook in a way that wouldn't be boring. Keeping up appearances, she 'thought' about it and then nodded. That sounded... not terrible. "We can use my kitchen. It... probably would enjoy being used by someone who knows what they're doing. The microwave tends to be my friend." Again, she explained she could cook, but most of her meals were take-out or something she just popped into the microwave to eat. Nothing too wrong with that. Daire was an interesting fellow, full of surprises. "...Could you teach me something easy to make on my own for when you're not cooking for me?"

Daire’s interest was obviously, immediately, piqued.
“Oh, with pleasure. You teach me what you like and I’ll teach you an easy way to make it. Or a cheap place to order it. Of course, everything’s cheaper if you run fast.”
He cracked a grin and was quick to assure, “I’m teasing. Mostly. There are plenty of meals you can cook while only using the microwave, too. Of course, I’ll always make you something special if you have me over. You seem like the kind of girl who deserves nice things, and I’ve always said that a good, home cooked meal is one of the best ways to get to know someone.”

The joke made her eye roll but in more of a fond way than exasperated. Of course, he would joke about that. "I ....suppose that might be true. My old housemate and I shared many meals together and got close." To the point, she had feelings for him. Ah, she thought she was happy then. Those feelings were long gone. Of course she missed him, but it was the way friends missed each other when one moved away. If Kip missed her was debatable at this point in time. Thinking about her favorite meal, Rin hummed a little, tapping a finger to her lip. "Well, my favorite thing is kiwi sorbet, but I'm not too keen on learning how to make that. Meal-wise, I think I enjoy a good flaky fish with some kind of root vegetable and a little salad on the side. A good roast is heavenly too, with beef. Pork roast just isn't as good." She moved her hand to push bangs out of her face and adjust her eye patch a bit. "I think, honestly, anything is better than the fast-food I get for lunch when I'm working." She spent so much on fast-food.

Daire did a decent job looking as though he wasn’t too curious about this old housemate of hers, sharing meals and getting close.
“I can’t imagine a girl like you living off of fast food,” he said after a moment, and then clarified, “I don’t mean to be rude or generalize. I know people who live off of fast food, and here you are, with your clear skin and your pretty hair. If I saw you and didn’t know you, I’d think you must be the type of girl who had private chefs. But,” he grinned as he looked from dinner to her. “Maybe you will one day yet. You stick with me and you might get more than just a good dinner, I make a good lunch, too.”
Although, speaking of dinner, he was sure that they should probably sit down and eat soon so she got to enjoy it while it was still at its best. So, he moved to the table and pulled out her chair for you.
“Why don’t you take it easy while I get this all finished up? We should be able to eat in just a minute or two.”

"I do take care of my skin and health. I work out, do yoga, stretching, at-home workouts..." Rin would take the compliment though. He suggested she go take it easy, and so she would, sitting at the table in a way she would be able to see him still. There was still the problem she had a whole blind side, and so she was a bit picky with how she sat. Stick with him... That was looking into the future, and that was something Rin didn't do a lot of. Most of the time her days blended together. Lately, with Daire, she wasn't so bored anymore. He had a tendency to break up the most boring parts of her week. Unexpected, but it left her smiling when she thought back to them. "You can eat whatever you want as long as you know how to take care of yourself. Or... I could be predisposed to have a high metabolism." A shrug because she wasn't too sure.

Daire laughed at this and nodded. “Well, a healthy combination of high stress and cardio keeps me in good shape. You seem a bit more put together. I like that.”
Although, he might have said he liked anything just to work out a smile from her.
It only took him a moment to get everything put together and plated, and he was sliding a full, beautifully plated meal in front of her. “Bon Appétit.”
He set his own down a moment later and took a seat across from her. “Let’s see if that high metabolism kicks in for this meal or if we have to do some at-home workouts to make up for it.”
He winked at her, obviously playful and in good spirits.
The meal smelled good. Looked good.
But then, he wouldn’t have invited her over to cook for her if he wasn’t confident that he could give her a good meal out of it.
