After a final adjustment with a specialized pin, the tiny drone sprang to life. It swam through the air on insect-like wings, bobbling this way and that, the proudly grinning face of its inventor following close by as it hovered up and off her desk, out of her room, through the hallway and down the stairs. Corporal Fae-Fae's first feat of engineering on Earth was complete, and now it was seeking out its first target. She tucked herself partially behind the doorway of the kitchen and the helper-bee buzzed on ahead. It took a meandering path towards Aliez, and, after making its presence known by flying slowly around his head for a couple of seconds, began to jingle out a familiar tune. It was one often used on Velencya to announce the arrival of a guest in the home.

They’d been on Earth for half of the planet’s rotation around its Sun. And still, there was no answer to how they could save Velencya. There was no answer to how they could save the Commodore, either.
Aliez felt heavy. Tired. More than just using his Source Stone to help him sleep, but a thick, lingering fatigue that seemed to slow him down.
The small bee flying around his head as he moved towards the kitchen was a bit concerning, and his first thought was trying to find a way to help it back outside where it could continue to work on pollination that the plants of Earth relied on.
But when he heard the tune, so familiar, and yet so out of reach, he froze.
He might have frozen, but the little wisp-like creature that tended to come and go as it liked, popped out of nowhere to follow the bee around.
“It’s okay, it’s okay,” he tried to call the wisp back, not wanting it to get territorial or… whatever it did. Nothing in any of his research had revealed what the wisp actually was, and he certainly didn’t know what this little bee was doing, making tunes from Velencya.

As Fae-Fae peeked around the corner to see how Aliez and her little drone were faring, a gasp of alarm announced her presence and she quickly stepped into the room. Upon seeing the wisp, and its flame-like form, her immediate thought had been that something in the kitchen must have caught Aliez on fire, and oh, she knew the human gas stove was dangerous! She just knew it would hurt someone eventually! But she paused, and calmed, when she noted that not only was the flame the wrong color for her assumption to be correct... it also wasn't spreading. It was just floating, and following around her new contraption as it whistled out tunes at random from all manner of machines and signals on Velencya. Fae-Fae quickly input a few commands on her ComTech, and it ended its singing before clumsily buzzing down to rest on the countertop. Looking between the Corporal and the wisp, she asked, "Aʟɪᴇᴢ, ɪs ᴛʜᴀᴛ ᴀ ʟɪғᴇ-ғᴏʀᴍ?" She was immediately fascinated by the strange little thing, almost completely forgetting what she had been up to a few seconds ago.

“That was you, Fae-Fae?” Aliez asked in surprise. He took another look at the bee that made its little jingle until it settled on the countertop, before looking back up at Fae-Fae. “You programmed that?”
Oh, she was asking him a question, too. He took another moment to look at the small wisp that seemed to hover closer to the little bee on the countertop. Aliez shook his head and let out a distressed sigh.
“It appeared while I was in the woods. I am not sure what it is. Possibly a life-form but…” he lifted his ComTech up to scan both it and the little bee, and shook his head. “Unidentifiable,” he signed again, a little more dramatically since he already expected that response. But it was still frustrating. Instead, he scanned the little bee.
“This is very well made, Fae-Fae. I didn’t know you were interested in this kind of programming. I missed that sound it was playing.”

Peering with open curiosity at the wisp, Fae-Fae wondered if Aliez had written any reports on the strange little thing. That in mind, since he hadn't put out any warnings to the Vanguard about it, it was most likely a harmless entity. Aliez was too careful and caring to not report on any dangers that entered their house. She scanned it with her own ComTech, which produced identical results. "Pᴇʀʜᴀᴘs ᴛʜᴇ Cᴏᴍᴍᴏᴅᴏʀᴇ ᴋɴᴏᴡs sᴏᴍᴇᴛʜɪɴɢ. Oʀ ᴏɴᴇ ᴏғ ᴛʜᴇ Eᴀʀᴛʜʟɪɴɢs?" Part of her wondered if Caedus would have answers, but he obviously wasn't an option right now. Being reminded of his situation, on top of the persistent confusion about the wisp, inspired a sigh of her own. Hopefully they would be able to figure out exactly what it was. When her attention was turned back to her invention, she smiled, proudly and warmly. "Dᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ʟɪᴋᴇ ɪᴛ? Yᴏᴜ ʜᴀᴠᴇ sᴇᴇᴍᴇᴅ ᴅᴇᴘʀᴇssᴇᴅ ʟᴀᴛᴇʟʏ. I ᴡᴏɴᴅᴇʀᴇᴅ ɪғ ᴛʜɪs ᴡᴏᴜʟᴅ ʜᴇʟᴘ." Which wasn't the sole reason she had made it, of course, but it felt like the best conditions for a test run. Now she was studying Aliez's face to see if he was feeling any better.

“It does not always stay around. It seems to come and go as it pleases, but when it does appear, it is always around me,” he sighed as he watched the little creature. “I am worried the Commodore may misunderstand,” he mumbled nervously.
Not because he didn’t trust the Commodore! He did! He just didn’t want to disappoint him. Not when there was so much at stake. Not when the Commodore’s life was on the line, when Velencya was dying. He didn’t want to burden the Commodore with something like this.
But it was easy to focus on what Fae-Fae created. It gave him hope for the future, and was a good reminder of what they were fighting for.
“I think it does, Fae-Fae, thank you,” Aliez said with a small smile. He had been stressed lately. Depressed as well, but he didn’t think he deserved to have anyone worry about him when he was busy worrying about everyone else.
“Will you be making more? I think the others would benefit from something like this as well.”

The fluffy plumes of graphite hair around Fae-Fae's face flapped back and forth as she nodded enthusiastically. She was pleased that she could help her friend feel better, and that showed in a warm smile. "I ʜᴀᴠᴇ ʟᴇᴀʀɴᴇᴅ sᴏᴍᴇ ᴛʜɪɴɢs ᴀʙᴏᴜᴛ ᴍᴜsɪᴄ," she explained. "Dɪᴅ ʏᴏᴜ ᴋɴᴏᴡ ɪᴛ's ɴᴏᴛ ᴇxᴄʟᴜsɪᴠᴇ ᴛᴏ Eᴀʀᴛʜ? Oᴛʜᴇʀ ᴡᴏʀʟᴅs ʜᴀᴅ ɪᴛ ᴀs ᴡᴇʟʟ. A Nᴇᴘᴛᴜɴᴇ Kɴɪɢʜᴛ sʜᴏᴡᴇᴅ ᴍᴇ!" Her expression started to sparkle with excitement. She didn't believe it would be the key to saving Velencya, but still could not help but feel like she had found something important. Her fingers flicked dextrously about her ComTech for a second and the drone sprang to life again, merrily chirping an assortment of Velencyan machine signals at random. "Iᴛ ɪs sᴏᴍᴇᴛʜɪɴɢ Vᴇʟᴇɴᴄʏᴀ ᴀʟᴍᴏsᴛ ʜᴀs, ʙᴜᴛ ɴᴏᴛ ᴏ̨ᴜɪᴛᴇ. Isɴ'ᴛ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ᴄᴜʀɪᴏᴜs?"

Aliez couldn’t say he’d ever been curious about music, so he didn’t really process her discovery as something to be curious about. He knew he was still young, comparative to how Velencians age, and had spent most of his less than two hundred years of life studying medicine and how to properly harness their Source Stone’s energy.
“I suppose it makes sense that other cultures and civilizations have discovered formatting mathematical equations into pleasing variations of pitches and tempos and rhythms,” Aliez nodded along to her excitement, happy that she was pleased with her discovery. That was what they were told to do, wasn’t it? Learn about Earth and what made it so special.
“I wonder if Velencya’s database has other instances of music,” he hummed thoughtfully to himself as he held out his hand for the little wisp to settle into his palm. He sighed at it, because he didn’t know what to do with it. It wasn’t useful like Fae-Fae’s little drone, and it wasn’t registering as a lifeform. He would just try to keep it safe and let it come and go as it pleased.
“It appears to enjoy the chimes,” he nodded to the little wisp that seemed to dance about when the drone started making its chirping sounds once more.
He would have asked if the Neptune Knight offered any insight on how they could save Velencya, and the Commodore, but he assumed that would have been the first thing Fae-Fae shared if that were the case.

"Sᴏ ɪᴛ ʜᴀs ᴀ ᴘᴇʀsᴏɴᴀʟɪᴛʏ," Fae-Fae offered brightly, while the wisp appeared to dance around the whistling drone. "Wᴏᴜʟᴅɴ'ᴛ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ᴍᴀᴋᴇ ɪᴛ ᴀʟɪᴠᴇ?" Now she turned her attention back to her ComTech again, running diagnostics and fiddling with settings to see if just one more scan under different parameters might reveal something. It did not. She made a disappointed noise at the persisting mystery, knowing it would bother her for a while. In spite of that, she turned back to Aliez with an approving smile. "Mᴀʏʙᴇ ɪᴛ ᴄʜᴏsᴇ ʏᴏᴜ ʙᴇᴄᴀᴜsᴇ ɪᴛ sᴇɴsᴇᴅ ʏᴏᴜ ᴀʀᴇ ᴋɪɴᴅ."

Aliez stared at the little wisp a few moments longer, then looked to the little bee with its pretty chimes, and then at his friend who had so kindly thought of him. And she smiled at him and told him the little lifeform must have sensed he was kind.
His eyes burned. He didn’t want them to. He felt embarrassed that such a simple thing for her to tell him was met with such an emotional response.
He blinked the tears away before they could become too noticeable, and smiled back at her with a small nod.
“Thank you, Fae-Fae. I think it came out because it sensed you were kind as well.”
He didn’t know what was going to be in store for them, but he hoped they would all be together, and would all return to Velencya stronger, and maybe happier, than before. cibarium Fin? Thank you so much! QQ
