The air was strangely hazy in this area compared to elsewhere in Destiny City. Fae-Fae was at an industrial complex that seemed to be still mostly under construction. She wrinkled her nose at the scent of the air, and the primitive vehicles and machinery scattered about. The scaffolding, however, was admittedly impressive, knowing that humanity hadn't learned to automate tasks like this properly yet. There was something to learn from all of it, she thought. The sheer contrast between how things were built here, and how they were built at home, could reveal insights about how to save Velencya. Her studious musings, however, were halted by motion sighted among the naked steel beams. There was a senshi here. One who looked familiar, in a manner that whispered to her heart. They looked busy, and were too far away to call to. Not only that, but she couldn't be certain whether this senshi would respond favorably to her presence. Instead of announcing her presence right away, she decided to quietly follow. Hopefully it would lead to another diplomatic connection. If not, she would at least have data.

Any distraction, Oberon decided, was better than sitting around and thinking about everything that happened. Everything that didn’t happen. The chances they tried to take and failed. The things and people they’d lost in the process.
He was used to following youma, often seeking them out and keeping his distance to study them. Trying to understand something misunderstood -- or maybe there really was nothing worth saving about them. He didn’t believe that, but there were so many others who did.
Just like there were so many others who would rather decide for Caedus when he should die.
“I know you’re there,” he called out. He couldn’t feel any aura, but he usually followed youma when he wasn’t powered up, and wondered if this was how they felt being followed.
A building that was under construction might not have been a good place for youma -- there wasn’t enough energy to collect. No food source meant no interest. But it might have been a place for the Negaverse to set up something. Or maybe the Dark Mirror Court.
However he hadn’t expected to see a Velencian.
“When are you leaving Earth?” he asked, nothing hostile, but his tone implied the sooner the better.

When the senshi announced to Fae-Fae that he had noticed her, she stopped in her tracks and allowed him to approach, trying her best to assume a stance that would appear peaceful and friendly. His voice, combined with his appearance up close, helped her confirm who he was -- he was definitely one of the senshi who had worked with Encke to save Caedus. His open disapproval at her presence was dismaying, but not unsurprising. The Corporal's face took on an apologetic expression as she formulated her response. "Wᴇ ᴡɪʟʟ ʟᴇᴀᴠᴇ ᴡʜᴇɴ ᴏᴜʀ ᴍɪssɪᴏɴ ɪs ᴄᴏᴍᴘʟᴇᴛᴇ. I ᴀᴍ sᴏʀʀʏ ғᴏʀ ᴛʜᴇ ᴅᴇʟᴀʏ," she said. "I ᴅᴏɴ'ᴛ ᴡɪsʜ ᴛᴏ ᴅᴏ ᴀɴʏ ʜᴀʀᴍ. I ᴏɴʟʏ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ᴛᴏ sᴀᴠᴇ ᴍʏ ᴘᴇᴏᴘʟᴇ."

Oberon tilted his head curiously. Skeptically. His skepticism shouldn’t have been too surprising for anyone who knew him, since behind every cynical person is a disappointed idealist… or so they say.
He had hope when the Velencians showed up. He’d been excited to see Caedus again. He remembered how, despite their losses when they charged into Negaspace, they’d managed to come out with so much more. The Code piece. The hundreds of hoarded starseeds that he’d personally helped ferry to the Moon, to Cosmos when she pulled them out.
Lyndin had betrayed the White Moon.
And so many of the Velencians had gone along with him, believing that they have the right to decide that one man should die because he could save them by being reborn.
“Your mission?” Oberon asked, his protectiveness for his friend outweighing his usual friendliness. “To kill Caedus and take his starseed? Isn’t that doing harm? Well… it’s not going to happen.”

Fae-Fae flinched a bit, and the muscles in her face clenched, at the reminder the senshi had provided -- that, through Lyndin's decisions, the Vanguard had been made responsible for some horrible events. It only followed that some would associate them all with that kind of violence; something reports from other Vanguardians on some of their own encounters with the White Moon would verify. The air was still, and tense. Fae-Fae took a breath that invited even more tension into her body, and said, "I ʜᴏᴘᴇ ɴᴏᴛ. Tʜᴀᴛ ᴡᴏᴜʟᴅ ʙᴇ ᴀ ᴛᴇʀʀɪʙʟᴇ ᴍɪsᴛᴀᴋᴇ." With her brow tied up in knots, she then confessed, "Iᴛ ᴡᴏᴜʟᴅ ᴄᴀᴜsᴇ ᴍᴏʀᴇ ʜᴀʀᴍ ᴛʜᴀɴ ʏᴏᴜ ᴋɴᴏᴡ."November's battlefield was screaming in her head again, threatening to overtake the industrial scenery around them. She saw Caedus's star seed flying into the air, over and over, and the hands of the senshi before her scrambling to grab it, over and over. "Yᴏᴜ ᴀʀᴇ ᴏɴᴇ ᴏғ ᴛʜᴇ sᴇɴsʜɪ ᴡʜᴏ sᴀᴠᴇᴅ ʜɪᴍ, ᴄᴏʀʀᴇᴄᴛ? I ᴀᴍ ɢʀᴀᴛᴇғᴜʟ." And someday all of Velencya will be, she thought. She hoped.

He was still angry that Lyndin betrayed them. Angry that so many people ended up getting pulled into the Negaverse. He’d heard by now what happened with those Ganymede managed to purify. Even that wasn’t enough to save them all.
Oberon paused for a moment, before reaching down to the tips of his fingers. He pinched and pulled at the leather gloves and let them fall to the floor, among the dust and debris of the construction site.
“Yes,” he said, although his normally soft and friendly voice was harsher. He held out his hands showing the scars he received from touching the starseed. Electrical burns that crept from his hands and up his arms in a lightning like pattern. He supposed it was fitting, given his family.
Not that it mattered with his father dead.
“Tell me, what harm would killing Caedus cause? I thought in killing him and returning his starseed, you’d be saving your world. Or is that not the case?”
Oberon wasn’t a fool. He knew that the likelihood of saving Velencya fell on Caedus’ decision to either have his starseed returned to the cauldron, or for them to find another miraculous way to save it. But that was his decision. Hearing others deciding to condemn their world to save Caedus…?
“How long have you known Caedus? He only escaped the Rift a handful of years ago. Only returned to Velencya… three years ago? He was on Earth for a while. He must have made a huge impact for this inconsistent loyalty.”
He knew he wasn’t being very nice, but at this point he didn’t care. For all he knew, this Velencian would betray them all, too.

Fae-Fae's eyes widened, and her demeanor wilted a bit, upon being shown the scars on the senshi's hand. She hadn't fully processed how dangerous it must have been to save Caedus, but now it was obvious -- this human had risked his life to save a Velencian. It was a sobering realization, one that would make her think more deeply about her attitude towards humans later. If the situation had been reversed, and it was a human life in the balance, would a Vanguardian have done the same thing? She hoped so. "I ᴏɴʟʏ ᴍᴇᴛ Cᴀᴇᴅᴜs ᴀғᴛᴇʀ I ᴡᴀs ᴄʜᴏsᴇɴ ғᴏʀ ᴛʜɪs ᴍɪssɪᴏɴ," she admitted. "Bᴜᴛ ʜᴇ ɪs ᴏɴᴇ ᴏғ ᴍʏ ᴘᴇᴏᴘʟᴇ. Aɴᴅ I ᴀᴍ ᴀ Vᴀɴɢᴜᴀʀᴅɪᴀɴ. Tʜᴀᴛ ᴍᴇᴀɴs I ᴍᴜsᴛ ᴠᴀʟᴜᴇ ᴀɴᴅ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴇᴄᴛ ʜɪs ʟɪғᴇ." The fact that he was royalty, that he was Velenia's senshi, were secondary concerns for her -- a sentiment she wished the Council had shared, instead of choosing to conduct the cruel experiments that had created this situation in the first place. "I ᴍᴜsᴛ ғɪɴᴅ ᴀɴᴏᴛʜᴇʀ ᴡᴀʏ. Oᴛʜᴇʀᴡɪsᴇ ᴛʜᴇ ᴅᴀᴍᴀɢᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴏᴜʀ sᴏᴄɪᴇᴛʏ ᴄᴏᴜʟᴅ ᴄᴏsᴛ ᴇᴠᴇɴ ᴍᴏʀᴇ ʟɪᴠᴇs. Oᴜʀ ʀᴇsᴛᴏʀᴇᴅ ʜᴏᴍᴇᴡᴏʀʟᴅ ᴡᴏᴜʟᴅ ʙᴇ ғᴏᴜɴᴅᴇᴅ ᴏɴ ᴛʜᴇ ᴘʀᴇᴍɪsᴇ ᴛʜᴀᴛ sᴏᴍᴇ ᴏғ ᴜs ᴀʀᴇ ᴅɪsᴘᴏsᴀʙʟᴇ!" Sadness and fear now eclipsed her features, with determination lighting up the edges. "Aɴᴅ ᴛʜᴀᴛ ᴏᴜʀ ʟᴇᴀᴅᴇʀsʜɪᴘ ʜᴀs ᴛʜᴇ ᴀᴜᴛʜᴏʀɪᴛʏ ᴛᴏ ᴇxᴇᴄᴜᴛᴇ ᴜɴᴅᴇsɪʀᴀʙʟᴇs ɪɴ sᴇᴄʀᴇᴛ!" Her eyes widened as her ComTech warbled upwards in pitch with each word. "Yᴏᴜ Eᴀʀᴛʜʟɪɴɢs ᴀʀᴇ ɴᴏᴛ ᴛʜᴇ ᴏɴʟʏ ᴏɴᴇs ᴡʜᴏ ᴡᴇʀᴇ ᴅᴇᴄᴇɪᴠᴇᴅ. Tʜᴇ ᴠᴀsᴛ ᴍᴀᴊᴏʀɪᴛʏ ᴏғ ᴍʏ ᴘᴇᴏᴘʟᴇ ᴀʀᴇ sᴛɪʟʟ ᴜɴᴀᴡᴀʀᴇ ᴏғ ᴡʜᴀᴛ ᴏᴜʀ Cᴏᴜɴᴄɪʟ ʜᴀs ᴅᴏɴᴇ."Fae-Fae remembered the advice Lyndin had given in the Dark Kingdom: when on a foreign world, don't reveal everything. This was, perhaps, far more than she should be sharing with an outsider to Velencya, and she was a bit shocked herself to hear the words that came out as she input them to her device. The pitch wound back down as her explanation ended, and she found herself a little exhausted to have said all of it. She remembered meeting Caedus in the woods, and the promise she had made, and she hoped her honesty here would do something to help her fulfill it.

Oberon frowned as the Vanguardian responded to him. The use of her ComTech for communication didn’t process as anything weird, although he might have been curious about it picking up on her emotions -- or maybe it was a frequency being processed. Either way, he would have to think about their technology later.
When he wasn’t thinking about how he couldn’t trust any of them.
“What did your Council do?” he asked, his eyes narrowed on the Velencian in front of him.
“Help me understand why you’re still siding with Lyndin, but claim you want to find another way to save Caedus. Lyndin has proven the only method he has left to save your world from dying is to return Caedus’ starseed to the Cauldron. If it’s so important that you value and protect his life, then why are you actively working with the person who wants -- and has the means -- to kill him? Someone who would ally you with the Negaverse that has been killing and attacking us for over a decade? Because they see us as aliens who don’t belong on Earth.
"What do you think will happen when they no longer see your people as useful to them? I’ve seen what they’re capable of. Experienced it. I’ve held hundreds of starseeds in my hands that they collected over the years. Caedus was not the first starseed I’ve risked my life to save before. And it won’t be my last. I just want to know why you’ve sided with someone who wants to execute undesirables.”

"Tʜᴇ Nᴇɢᴀᴠᴇʀsᴇ ᴋɪʟʟᴇᴅ ᴍʏ ʙᴇsᴛ ғʀɪᴇɴᴅ!"Fae-Fae was suddenly deeply offended by this senshi. She gave her words after a long stare at him, incredulous that he would dig his heels and remain suspicious when she was trying so earnestly to demonstrate that she meant no harm. Now she was realizing that she was letting this human pull more out of her than she needed to give. "Mʏ ᴄʜᴏɪᴄᴇ ʜᴀs ɴᴏᴛʜɪɴɢ ᴛᴏ ᴅᴏ ᴡɪᴛʜ ᴛʜᴇᴍ! The Corporal had clearly wasted her time, trying to befriend this particular Earthling. Now it was time to leave. She turned on her brightly-colored heel without offering another word, and started jogging back towards the city.

Maybe as a third party, Oberon would have considered the interaction comical. She didn’t answer him about the Council, so he was still at a loss for whatever it was their Council did. Which meant he couldn’t help Caedus with that knowledge.
But then again, maybe she was just setting him up. He didn’t know much about these Velencians, but if one was able to deceive them, then maybe they were all capable of that. Maybe it was a trap. Maybe it was just a waste of his time.
“Great job always finding a way to work together, even when it’s hard! Oh, or I guess us humans aren’t worth working with?” he yelled after her. “Hypocrite,” he grumbled as he rubbed the back of his hand where the burns from holding Caedus’ starseed stretched as lightning up his wrist and forearm.
He didn’t care. She could scurry back to Lyndin to report whatever she’d gleaned from meeting him, and he would continue to be suspicious of the Velencians’ lack of answers.
More importantly… he needed to figure out a way to make sure Caedus was safe from his own people.
