Legend
Mom
Cashier
The moment Mei stepped outside she almost regretted not putting up a bit of a fight with her mom. 'Soooo hot...' she thought as she turned around and went back into the house.
"You didn't make it out very far."Her mother stated as Mei walked into the kitchen and opened the fridge.
"It's freaking hot outside...Going to grab a few water bottles so I don't pass out" She stated as she tossed two cold ones in her bag.
"That's a smart idea, also before I forget here" Her mother tossed her a bottle of sunscreen "Put some of that on your arms and legs so you don't get burned"
"Hah thanks mom" Mei rubbed the sunscreen on her arms, legs, feet, and face before sticking the bottle in her bag for later 'just in case' she thought as she zipped up her bag and headed back out the front door "I'LL BE BACK LATER" she yelled one more time before shutting the door.
Mei zig-zagged her way through the neighbor hood with no real direction in mind. Times like this she wish she had a dog, at least then she wouldn't feel like a complete outsider wondering aimlessly like a lost girl... which unfortunately at the moment is exactly what she was. She managed to find one small park that had a medium size play structure that had a tire-swing and at least two big slides for the kids. Otherwise the size of the playground was definitely more suited for a neighborhood rather than a community.
The second park she ran into was actually significantly larger, it had two tennis courts a big play structure, six regular swings and a pick-nick area complete with four tables for families to sit. It was quite cute and rather relaxing despite the 15+ kids running around screaming playing tag. This is definitely a park she wouldn't mind coming back to an work on some of her grid detective puzzles or sudoku puzzles.
She continued to make her way though the streets making mental notes of different landmarks such as oddly colored fire hydrants, unique colored houses or front yards she thought were really well designed. Every once in a while she took out her camera to snap photos of designs she wanted to try in their yard. Eventually she made her way to a main road 'left or right... oh what the hell I'll go right' she thought as she walked across the cross walk.
Periodically she stopped to pull out a water bottle and take a few drinks to stay hydrated. To be honest the walk really wasn't that bad so long as she stayed on the side of the street with the most shade.
Mei's stomach let out a rather loud growl, looking at her phone she noticed that it was indeed a little after noon and she left without eating this morning. Eventually she managed to come across a shopping area complete with a few restaurants; a Greek restaurant, Itallian restaurant, two cafes, Pho restaurant just to name a few. There was also a grocery store, a movie store and a few nick-knack stores.
Unfortunately she wasn't exactly in the mood for anything fancy and opted to go into the grocery store to grab a deli sandwich with turkey, lettuce, cheese and mayo.
Standing in line is more mind numbing if anything. It's generally a good idea not to eyeball the candy or look though the magazines least of all you find yourself buying something you don't need. But alas that didn't stop Mei Buy 2 get 2 free Hershey bars...tempting tempting indeed, something sweet to go with her turkey sandwich. "Hi there! Did you find everything you were looking for?"Not noticing that the lady in front of her was done, Mei turned around almost startled by the brunet cashier who was trying to get her attention.
"Hi, I did thank you" Typical starting conversation that is drilled into every new cashier's mind. It doesn't matter where you go the greeting is almost identical in every store.
"You must be new around here"Well that follow up statement and or question wasn't typical, catching Mei off guard.
"What makes you say that" Mei asked with a bit of curosity etched in her voice. She didn't feel like she stuck out, let alone dress out of the norm.
"I've been working at this store for the past 3 years, I've gotten pretty good with faces. You visiting from out of town?"That makes sense Mei thought to herself as the gal took the divider bar and slid it along the convener belt so another customer could use it and rang up the sandwich. Taking a moment, Mei glanced down at the cashiers name tag Jenny
"No, my family just moved here a few days ago." Mei responded while watching the cashier rummage through an envelope. Once Jenny found what she was looking for the cashier scanned the bar-code then tossed it into the garbage bin. Looking at the screen Mei saw read the new line item indicating she had saved a dollar. "Thank you," she said with a genuine smile " I appreciate it."
"Ah, see, I knew it! Don't worry about it, that will be three dollars and twenty-two cents."Mei reached into her bag to pull out her wallet and grab a 10 then handed it off to the gal. "So are you just out wondering about?"The cashier was friendly that's for sure but her questions were not unwelcome, if anything Mei appreciated the small chit chat.
"More or less yeah, actually I was wondering something..."The cashier swiped a special pen over the ten dollar bill to ensure that the bill was not a fake before putting it in the register and counting out Mei's change. "Is there a plant nursery or a place I can go to get some potting soil and new pots?" Reaching out her hand, Mei accepted her change and put it in her wallet before picking up her sandwich.
With quite an up-beat tone in her voice and a hit of know it all the cashier replied,"You must not 'ov made it down that far, when you go out those doors take a right and head straight down that street. There is a huge nursery on the left, you can't miss it"She pointed to the sliding automatic doors on the other side of the store indicating that's the door Mei needed to exit out of.
"Really?" Mei responded with a mixed tone in her voice. She was happy that there was a local nursery, however she was skeptical that it was as huge as the cashier indicated. Every town seems to think theirs is the biggest we'll see she thought. With her sandwich in hand Mei turned to leave but not before turning back around and waived to the gal "Thank you so much I hope you have a great day!"
"You too, come again soon!"Jenny waved back.
