Destiny City was so busy. All the people, all the lights, all the movement, all the noise. Most of the time, Devyn liked it. Anything was preferable to the emptiness of his homeworld. Well. Most of the time. He had food here. Good weather. Michael was at work, but he didn’t mind this type of solitude. He could see other people. He was on his own, but not alone.

But, he’d chosen this place specifically for that reason. He could have been somewhere more private, or somewhere busier, but he liked this park. He went on runs here often, but even when he wasn’t trying to burn out energy, he appreciated the openness and liveliness of the place.

There were ducks in the pond, children playing on a hill nearby. The trees were tall and full of leaves. He was sitting at a picnic table, with a bag of food he hadn’t really gotten into yet. He’d sat down a few minutes ago, but in doing so all of the exhaustion he’d been fighting off by moving crept in, and he was hungry, but it had still taken him a minute to start picking at everything.

The french fries were first; he took them out and rolled up the bag to keep the rest warm, and indulged in his simple observations of the world while he snacked.

There was plenty to admire. He was aware of people around them, partly because he was just used to being sure he knew where people were. He didn’t like to be snuck up on, and even if Earth was different, it was still in his bones to be cautious. His back was to the tree, just in case. There wasn’t anyone hiding in it when he’d sat down.

He knew he didn’t stick out as anyone special here, and it was partly a relief. Wearing Michael’s borrowed clothes, he knew he fit in, because Michael wouldn’t have let him go out looking like a target. His hair was tied up in a ponytail to keep it out of his face.

It was a nice day.

He just didn’t know what he was doing with it.

With work later in the day, once school got out and the children were able to move on to their extracurriculars, Brielle didn't have time to go out of town to any hiking trails, but she was still feeling the need to move and get some fresh air and some sun on her face. Walking was a habit that she had gotten into when everything had fallen apart, and even though some of the anxiety and grief in her chest had lessened now that Ganymede was no longer in the clutches of the Negaverse, it didn't mean that they were gone.

Olivia hadn't been answering her texts, and that had Brielle worried in a different way.

The walk was helping to settle her mind, though, even though she had only ventured as far as the park. At least, the walk was settling her mind until she looked up from watching some ducks paddle around in the pond and she saw Devyn sitting alone at a picnic table.

Yes, she had only spoken to him for a short time at the Christmas dinner, but his face had burned itself into her mind after everything that had been said.

Well, everything that she'd said.

There was nothing that said she had to stop and talk to him. He seemed happy enough, sitting there alone and pecking at his fries. Brielle could have turned around, or hoped that he didn't recognize her. Her conscious won out, though. He deserved an apology.

She walked over in the end, trying to keep any nerves from showing through on her face. "Devyn?" she asked.

Devyn glanced up, vaguely aware of someone approaching but doing what he could to pay it no mind. It was a public place and he wasn’t entitled to this table any more than anyone else would have been. He expected a stranger, but he was surprised that she addressed him by name.

Which was immediately suspicious, and he was on edge, but–

No, he knew her. She was just one of Michael’s–family? What was her name?

A Senshi, Cybele. But she didn’t go by that when she was in disguise. “Brielle,” he greeted. It was unlikely that Michael had sent her out to check on him, so this must have been pure happenstance. Or, something was wrong.

He tended to expect the worst these days. And yet, he didn’t jump to conclusions. Out loud, at least.

“It’s been a while, hasn’t it? How have you been?”

If he'd just asked how she was, then Brielle might have been able to shoot back the reflexive answer that she was fine, but he hadn't asked that. He'd asked how she'd been, presumably since the last time they'd talked at that party.

Brielle's gaze went distant for a moment, although her eyes never left his. When she spoke, her voice was quiet, strained. "Did Michael not tell you?" she found herself saying.

He might not have.

Brielle hadn't known that Michael was Sessrumnir back at Christmas, but she knew now. She also knew he'd said nothing while Devyn had been asking after the old Sessrumnir, Percy. He'd obviously kept secrets from Devyn to spare his feelings before.

But that, she had to remind herself, was between them. She was here to apologize for putting her nose in his business.

"That's fine. It's fine. I'm just," she paused, "Sorry. For making things awkward at Christmas. That's what I wanted to say to you."

Devyn lowered the fries he’d been snacking on in a way that made it obvious that she had his full attention, no matter how good they smelled.

“You didn’t make things awkward.”

Well, she had, sort of, but everything really just blurred together. It’s not like it was her fault. He didn’t blame her. Or Michael.

“I’m the one who should be apologizing. I’m sorry for coming in and disrupting your holiday like that. And leaving so shortly afterwards. I hope I didn’t distress you too much. It was,” he paused, because he could still feel the prickle of his skin when things started to settle in, and even though he knew now, it was never going to be easy news to go over, “Not ideal. I’m sorry for that. I didn’t know. If I had, I would have done things differently.”

But, he still wasn’t blaming Michael for not telling him. He understood why he’d waited, and Devyn wasn’t sure he’d have known what to do if the roles had been reversed.

“Michael and I have spoken, he’s filled me in on everything.”

Well, he assumed it was everything, at least. Trusted that he knew what he needed to know.

He looked at the food he had, and then at her, and asked, “Do you want to have a bite while you’re here? I have plenty.”

Brielle softened slightly as he apologized in turn, even as she shook her head.

She slipped into the bench across the table from him, and murmured "Thank you," as she took a fry. So that she did not end up saying something impulsive again, she forced herself to chew it slowly.

"It's not your fault that you didn't know," she said with a small shrug, "And you weren't intruding. At least, you weren't intruding any more than I was."

She might have carried the Gallo name, now, which added a bit of permanence to her presence at the house and at gatherings, but there was always the nagging knowledge at the back of Cybele's mind that she'd been some poor thing invited in. She'd been feeling better about that, more a part of things, but then the grief had washed through the house and made everything strange again.

"I was having my own issues with war, and with loss, I suppose, when they took me in. I think Momma was trying to do the same for you, it just-" she cut off to thoughtfully eat another fry, "Escalated."

She glanced down at the table. "But yes, it's been a rough few months."

Devyn didn’t seem to mind sharing, and gestured to the bag as well; he opened it and took out a few burgers. He had more than any human might need to eat, but he didn’t seem like the amount was daunting for him.

He exhaled, a heavy breath that he didn’t even seem like he’d been holding, and then shrugged again.

“Michael mentioned a bit of it to me,” he said, but didn’t think to presume he knew everything. Especially not for Brielle. She was still much of a mystery to him, and he found himself naturally guarded. It wasn’t anything she’d done wrong, it was just how he’d stayed alive all this time.

“Is it rude for me to ask about them taking you in? I don’t know that story.” There were some things he could infer, but this wasn’t his world. This wasn’t his normal. He could piece together that she was an outsider, not naturally from the family. That she’d been brought in, that they’d intended to look over her and take care of her, or at least give her a spot in the family that would have allowed them to look over her.

She’d suffered from war and loss, things he could understand easily. He wasn’t so sure by what she meant about Momma, but he watched and listened with interest.

The sheer amount of burgers that he was holding on to got a curious look from Brielle, but hardly a judgemental one. She grabbed one, mostly out of politeness, and she started to peel the paper back but didn't take a bite yet.

"I don't know how much Michael knows about me, anyway," she said with a small shrug, and even though she was also being slightly distant, sort of polite to the point where she lacked warmth, she didn't hesitate at all in talking about these things. "I don't know much about him. I don't know that he'd call me family. We hadn't met before that party."

Then at the party, it was hardly like she'd made a good impression, and then the next time they'd met had been that fight where she hadn't been able to help save Empyrean or Ganymede. It made things awkward, but that was between her and Michael, not Devyn, no matter how close the two might be.

"I don't mind talking about it," she said with a small shrug, although she did give a quick look around to make sure that nobody was listening before she continued, "It was almost two years ago now that I was corrupted into the Negaverse against my will. They can do that. They can reach into your chest and destroy everything that you are. Your memories. Your free will. For a while there, I almost thought they'd taken my humanity. Ganymede still saw it, though."

Brielle never spoke about her sister with anything but pride, and this was no exception.

"She helped me get out, and then she and the others gave me a family."

Devyn had dealt with enough politicians in his time that the carefully constructed politeness didn’t seem to disturb him, and it wasn’t like she spoke with the same brittle ego as they had. Her distance seemed to stem from caution more than an intent to mislead. And, she answered him, so he didn’t feel like she was being particularly avoidant.

He didn't know how much Michael knew about her, or what someone had to do to be considered family–blood or otherwise–but he assumed by the way she spoke about Ganymede that she was always going to be more attached to her than Michael, anyway.

“I’m glad you found her and that she could help. I can’t imagine someone having the ability to destroy memories.” He paused for a moment and then shrugged, “Or maybe I’m not the best example.” He’d only forgotten what he didn’t want to remember, after all. And he’d gotten those memories back when he realized it. “I haven’t run into anyone in the Negaverse yet. But I don’t want to be unprepared. The Chaos on my world is different. It’s not a person, it’s just a thing. But it’s merciless. I don’t know that anyone can be ‘saved’ from it. It just swallows them whole. I’ve never met someone who survived it. I’m glad to know that Ganymede was able to help you out of it. How are you doing now? Does it still call to you or are you stronger now?”

Devyn meant well. Brielle knew that. He was sharing his food, his table, and his time with her despite any past awkwardness.

He still hit a nerve.

Everything about Cybele changed in a split second when he asked his question. Her shoulders tensed. Her free hand clenched so tightly that her fingernails dug into her palm. Her lips pressed thin. Her throat was suddenly burning. There was a heat behind her eyes, too, and Cybele had to clench every muscle in her body and force herself to count to three to keep herself from screaming in his face.

"It doesn't call to me," she said, and her voice came out flat instead. "It didn't call to me. I didn't want this."

She shouldn't be reacting like this. She knew that. A few months ago, yes, she might have thought it was shameful to be tempted or tricked into the Negaverse, but after hearing Albireo's story?

Still, she couldn't help the way her eyes were quickly turning red at the suggestion that she'd chosen anything about this.

"But there's only so much you can when you're caught, and drained, and they put their hands in your chest and pump Chaos directly into your starseed." A beat passed. She couldn't look Devyn in the eyes, so she stared at the table instead. "And no, I'm not any stronger. I just recovered to being as strong as I was before. It could happen again."

Devyn watched her with what could have been described as an absolutely impenetrable, unreadable expression. Something about it was guarded, but it seemed like it might have been instinctive to steel himself in the face of such emotion.

For a moment, he was quiet. He let her compose herself, and he made sure he didn’t respond with any flared emotions, either.

Finally, in an even tone, he answered. “Perhaps I misspoke. I didn’t mean to imply that you had any choice in it. The Chaos here is different from my home. You hear it. Whispering, from the darkness. It says things to you. Tries to call you into it. It takes a strong will to ignore it. Even I’ve felt tempted by the call sometimes. I’ve seen people walk into it, and I’ve seen it take people who never had a chance against it. I’ve never seen anyone come out of it. I meant no offense. I’m still learning about the Negaverse. I’m sorry you went through that. I can’t imagine.”

Brielle's face softened. It didn't relax all the way. She was still on the verge of tears, or possibly some other type of explosion, but now she looked embarrassed about it. She took a bite of food and chewed slowly, to buy some time to breathe, and process.

When she looked up again, she wore thin smile. "See, now I have to apologize again," she said. "I don't have any experience with Chaos outside of what I've seen of it. Whispering, constantly?"

She could visualize darkness consuming people more easily, given her own experiences with the Negaverse and her role in snuffing out lives, but the thought of something constantly calling you towards death was somehow more uncomfortable.

She'd had Chaos controlling her thoughts, but not so directly.

"I can't imagine what you've been through, either. I've only been alive for a bit over a year, you've been dealing with all this for, what, a thousand?"

If he was guarded, she could certainly understand why.

Devyn made no effort to rush her, and maybe the silence was a bit comforting for him, too. He couldn't rush into saying the wrong thing if they were both taking time to think about things.

He shrugged; he hadn’t kept count. He’d been told how long it was, and maybe if he sat down he could have done the math. There just really hadn’t been a point keeping track after a while.

“So it seems,” he answered instead. It wasn’t noncommittal or dismissive, he just didn’t seem keen to dwell on it for too long. “After a while everything just blends together.”

When he was relaxed, his face was expressive. Now, he seemed to be drifting back into that. He was expressive when he spoke; his eyebrows seemed the most noticeably animated, and even while they were somewhat tame now it was clear that he didn’t seem to take any offense.

“You don’t owe me any apologies. And I wouldn’t ask you to imagine what I’ve been through. It is what it is. I just want to save my world. And this one. It’s grown on me.” Or, at least, the people had. A little.

“I’m sorry for upsetting you. Is there any way I can make it up to you?”

Brielle had no idea how to wrap her head around the concept of being alive for so long that years started to blend together. Some of her memories from her time in the Negaverse were blurred, and they all felt distant, but that was because of the damage to her starseed.

Her newer memories were crisp, and she thought about the best ones before she went to sleep, over and over again, as if that would keep her from losing them if something else happened.

"You don't owe me anything," she said with a wave of her hand. Maybe she wasn't completely relaxed, or over what he'd said, but she was close enough to it. "If there was something to make up for, you've already done it by getting me this food. It's good."

Brielle was picky about what burgers and fries she liked, but these were not too greasy. "I'm glad you want to help Earth. We can use all the support we can get. If you need a second opinion on your planet, let me know. I think I've helped chase Chaos off of three worlds at this point."

She wasn't sure if that made her an expert, or what she could do about whispering, but if there was Chaos out there, she would always try to destroy it.

Devyn offered a smile; he knew his taste in food was complicated, but it wasn’t difficult to argue that this was infinitely better than what he’d been eating back on Alastor for a while now.

“Have as much as you want.” He could always get more. He’d gotten a lot, probably more than a person should eat. Not more than he could eat, though, so it wasn’t like it was wasteful.

“I’m not sure it’s safe to take anyone back to my world. No offense,” he insisted, “It’s just. I’ve seen it take a lot of people.” Everyone, really. There was a bitter taste in his mouth at the thought of introducing anyone else to the Chaos. He didn’t want to risk losing them to it. “I’m not really even sure why it hasn’t taken me. I’d like to think it’s just because I’m strong, but I know I’ve gotten weaker. I used to be an Eternal Senshi. I don’t even remember when I lost that. But I’m working my way back up. The Mauvian I spoke to said my starseed couldn’t handle any more right now, but. I’ll get there.”

He shrugged, like this wasn’t a problem. It wasn’t an if, either. It was a when. He was committed to regaining his strength, and after that doing whatever he needed to save his world.

“Can you tell me about that? The Chaos on other worlds? I don’t even know where to start with mine. Whatever progress I make is almost immediately swallowed up. I’ve tried everything I can think of, I’m beyond desperate. I won’t let this thing have my world.”
