Ever since his meeting with Langite, Carterhaugh had been....well. In something of a tangle of emotions, certainly. The accusation that he was some kind of invader, that this world was anything but his own....ugh. It made him feel tired and bitter, and like he had a lot of questions about the propaganda the Negaverse was feeding its agents. How did they even explain away Earth Knights? Or were there simply so few of them that it didn't matter, and they were beneath notice?

How utterly distressing.

The feel of a Lieutenant gave him pause. Would this be another brainwashed idiot, or would it be someone actually worth talking to? Carterhaugh liked to think he would be ready either way, but truth be told....it was hard to say.

Aegirine was cautious with the feeling of the order aura, and honestly…she thought that the night might be better spent curled up in her recliner with a glass of whisky but…here she was.

And…after a moment, there they were, in a green and white outfit looking as though they were holier than thou. Or…well. Whatever.

It was the first member of order that she had ever encountered, and there was quite a bit of fear bubbling up in her stomach.

Without a word, she summoned her poor excuse for a weapon to her hand and just watched the…whatever they were with narrowed eyes.

…Perhaps if she stood very still, they wouldn’t see her. Perhaps they would think she was just a short, pale, leafless tree.

And perhaps pigs would fly and her fiancé would be resurrected from the death.

Carterhaugh was not one to attack without reason. And although the Lieutenant staring at him like she was a deer in the headlights of a semi did have a weapon pulled, she was making no move to use it--so that meant that she was probably just skittish.

Maybe she'd had a bad experience or two. Carterhaugh could believe that.

"Something I can help you with, Lieutenant?" They asked, dryly. "If you'd like to remember this moment, a picture would last longer."

Aegirine was still holding her breath, half hoping that he wasn’t actually talking to her, that maybe he was just having a conversation with the air but…

Ah. No. He was looking right at her…

Well. s**t.

Her grip on her weapon tightened so much that the plastic began to creak under her hand. “I don’t happen to have a camera with me, what a shame.”

The words came out breathy and a little confused, but she huffed and tried to force it away, shoving a piece of hair back from her face. “Are you going to fight me? I will say. I’m not really drunk enough for this but. I gladly accept your challenge, you cur.”

"Too bad," Carterhaugh said, and he raised a hand, beckoning her over. "Come on, sit down, it's a big enough bench for two. I'm not going to fight you unless you absolutely force me to." He quirked his eyebrows, amused. "Really, does this look like an outfit for someone ready to charge into battle?"

He was pretty sure the answer had to be no. A long skirt wasn't exactly conducive to fighting, even though he'd definitely made do in the past.

"Why don't we talk, instead? I think that'd be much better for both of us, especially if you're at all drunk." The idea of fighting someone who wasnb't sober....eugh. It felt slimy, and bad, and like taking advantage. Not the type of person Carterhaugh wanted to be.

Aegirine shrugged. “Anyone could run into battle wearing whatever they want, honestly. I won’t judge but.”

She slowly made her way over and sat down on the bench, as far away from the Page as she could while still able to see him. “Talk about what, exactly. I was under the impression that we didn’t talk, that we’re just supposed to kill each other happily.”

Honestly she didn’t have much of an idea of what was really supposed to happen but it sounded like a good guess.

“We have nothing in common, so I don’t see what we could speak about.”

Carterhaugh regarded her thoughtfully. She seemed to genuinely not know much about the war, or about the other side, and it seemed like Negaverse propaganda leaned pretty heavily on how they, Order, were all horrible monsters. The Senshi had accused him of being an invader; this one thought there was no commonality between them.

"I don't think we have to kill each other," Carterhaugh said. "I think there's plenty of space for us to talk. We're both people, right? I'm sure we can find something in common."

He crossed one leg over the other, idly.

"Not that I want to ask you questions about what you do outside this, but I am curious about your organization in general. How'd you end up with them?"

The lieutenant wrinkled her nose, trying to decide if it was a trick question or not. On one hand…it was really none of this person’s business how she ended up where she did…but on the other hand…maybe if they heard, there wouldn’t have to be any fighting.

“I suppose because I was saved by my General. I wasn’t doing very good. Was about a hair from drinking myself to death and he gave me a job and…brought me in to this. Where I have resources and friends. Comrades who can keep me company…”

Not that she wasn’t already back at the point of almost drinking herself to death, and only had one friend in the entire organization and…her General didn’t seem to have half of the time of day for her…but…

Hey. He didn’t need to know that part.

Her story was heartbreaking. It made Carterhaugh's chest hurt. And it tracked with what they had seen of the Negaverse; targeting the vulnerable, be it for draining, starseeding, or, it seemed, for recruitment.

"That....sounds very difficult, and I'm glad someone was able to help you out," they said. It was a risky situation, then; lots of people who probably felt they owed the Negaverse their lives, because if they did it with one, they probably did it with more. "Your General sounds like a very generous person. Do they still look after you?"

Carterhaugh hoped so. It would be painful, they thought, to have that hand extended and then taken away.

Aegirine hesitated and shrugged. “He’s. Been busy. I don’t blame him. I haven’t actually seen him in months. And I guess I’ve started drinking pretty badly again. But. It’s fine. I’m working on it…working on something at least. I’m here. Doing my job….and in that…I shouldn’t be talking to you. You’re supposed to be my enemy.”

If she was ever going to be worthy of anyone giving a damn about her…she had to at least act the part.

Quietly she stood up and taking a few quick steps, held the blunted point of her plastic sword to Carterhaugh’s throat. “I suppose. I suppose you should be lucky that my weapon is nothing more than plastic, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have an idea of how to use it. Plastic can be deadly in my hands.”

Ah. Busy. And she was making excuses for him. That made Carterhaugh's expression tilt into a brief frown. If he'd abandoned her....well, she clearly didn't think so, and her loyalty didn't seem shaky. But maybe...maybe there was hope to help her.

Not that it felt particularly good to have a sword pointed at their throat, but Carterhaugh sighed, and leaned back on the bench, trying to project that they weren't afraid.

"We were having such a nice talk," they said, "there's really no need for this. Why does it have to be all murder all the time? Wouldn't it also be doing your duty to convince me that I ought to...I don't know, join your side? Spy for you?"

Orangeish Sherbert

Aegirine scoffed. It..hadn’t been a bad talk, but she shouldn’t have been having it. However…

“Why would that be my duty? Clearly if you have such ideas, than you have thought of it regardless, I shouldn’t have to sell you on the idea of you abandoning the lies that you’ve been told, and if someone offers to be a spy with a sword at their throat, I must admit that they are either a coward or a scoundrel, and not someone I would want in my employ anyway. No, from that alone I should just kill you.”

….Obviously it would be a much easier feat with…a not plastic sword but…there they were.

Maybe she could at least whack him a few times? Press hard enough on their windpipe…

There were options, now that she was thinking of them.

So, Aegirine perched herself on the bench, one leg on either side of the Knight’s legs and pressed the back end of the sword to his throat. “Any last words before I crush your throat?”

Carterhaugh swallowed. She seemed...quite determined to do violence. That was not exactly a position he wanted to be in, but she hadn't gone for their starseed, of yet, so perhaps....perhaps she didn't realize. Or she was hesitant.

Whatever the reason, there was still a plastic sword against their throat, and they were left in a position to calculate a lot of options all at once.

She was on top of them. Practically in their lap. A positoon that might have been sultry, under other circumstances, and--

Oh.

Oh, it was a terrible idea, and it might just make her angrier, but it was the best terrible idea Carterhaugh had right then.

"You know," they said, locking eyes with hers, "you are remarkably beautiful."

They reached up, gently grabbed her chin, and tugged her forward into a kiss.

Even a moment of distraction might be enough, to duck out and get away.

Aegirine paused at the words, her brows furrowing that…that was a strange–

And then warm, soft lips were against hers and she felt herself melt. But…but.

As a small, surprised, pleased sound left her throat, the lieutenant realized that she had to just…leave. She could unpack this later. Deal with this later but right now.

She had to get away.

And so, when she drew in the strength to break the kiss, she bolted, vanishing into the distance as fast as her feet would allow.
