To be fair, he knew that if he looked around for too long, he’d find trouble. This was normal. He wasn’t afraid of a little workout.

He was afraid of getting stuck in Mirrorspace with no way out and no one to come looking for him, so when he’d found a hallway with strange cracks in the ground and he still thought he should go on investigating–

Well, it was his own fault.

At first, it was fine. And then, suddenly, it sounded like something was cracking. He had a clear and vivid image of ice shattering and an icy river above, and he couldn’t really remember if he’d fallen but he was pretty sure he’d hit his head because he had immense pain and was hit with a sudden spinning sensation.

Arnica floundered to get himself back on his feet, and he heard more of the groaning, the crunching glass sound. He didn’t recognize the hallway he was in, but he couldn’t see if the roof had caved in. Lights were flashing, everything was moving. A giant mirror stretched from the floor to the ceiling, to both sides of the hallway. It was foggy, but light kept reflecting off of it.

He thought he saw something move. Thought he saw an eye. A big eye. A horn. The mirror shattered, and he ran. It felt like the hallway was thundering, and he was so dizzy, and–

There was a mirror in front of him, he could get out of here. Before everything shattered around him, before the monster–was it a monster? Or had he just hit his head so hard? He didn’t have time to think about it–

He reached the mirror at the end of the hallway and ran through it at full speed. Leapt, really, and kept running. Except, he’d really only made it ten, fifteen feet before he slammed to someone else.

If he hadn’t been overwhelmed with the dizzy, crushing sensation of Mirrorspace trying to wash off of him, maybe he’d have felt the senshi before he ran into her. Maybe he could have calmed down once he reached Mirrorspace, but he didn’t have time.

The collision hurt, and briefly he was dazed and tried to shake his head to push himself up, because if that thing was following him–

Oh, wait, who had he run into again? What was going on? ********, he was so dizzy.

Keiko had been looking at herself in the mirror, she wasn’t ashamed of the fact. She looked good, and if the Dark Mirror Senshi were going to have mirrors all over everywhere…she was going to take full advantage of them to preen. And so she was.

Of course, when the senshi tore out of the mirror and slammed into her like a rhinoceros into a safari truck, she wished she hadn’t been standing quite so close.

“Ow! Ow what the hell!” Keiko was thrown off of her feet and slid backwards on the ground several inches, cutting up the backs of her legs on some twigs and stones. Thankfully, her sleeves protected her arms but.

Ow.

“Jesus, is something chasing you or something? I thought mirrors were supposed to keep things safe, can’t you see what’s on the other side before you come charging through?” If not, then that court should work on that. Seriously.

He was a tangle of limbs and confusion and tried to push away from her without hurting either of them. “Sorry,” he blurted, and jerked his head to the mirror because if that thing was following him, then any second now—

Nothing changed. Nothing happened. Nothing broke through the shiny silver surface.

It was just quiet. Peaceful, even, except for the waves of pain rolling through him.

“Yeah, actually. Something was chasing me. Didn’t see you, wasn’t really paying attention. Think I broke something in there. Sorry–are you okay?” he asked, and reached out a hand to help her up, missed, and then had to pause to put his hand on his temple to try and steady how much the world was spinning around him, instead.

Keiko watched him for a moment and hesitated, forcing herself to sit up and shaking her head. “You’re about to go into a panic attack I swear to god. I’m going to use my magic on you, It’ll make you cold but it won’t last for very long and hopefully it should be enough to give you a chance to calm down a bit.”

It wasn’t what she would have done normally, but…in this case, she hoped it would do more good than harm.

“My name’s Keiko, Senshi of the Yuki-Onna. Freeze.”

The words were spoken with care, gentle and worried and she let the magic flow over him, nothing but concern in her eyes.

Besides, if something had been chasing him. If it decided it wanted to go through the mirror to get him...having this senshi alert and not dazed would be the best thing for them both.

Keiko draws in a deep breath after saying the name of her attack and blows it out, towards an opponent. The breath comes out a pale, icy blue and can travel as far as five feet away, in a cone that is five feet wide. The attack can only effect one person, and that person will feel a sharp, bitter cold as though they have been outside in sub freezing temperatures for a little too long. Once struck by the cold breath, the feeling of freezing lasts for thirty seconds.

Arnica laughed quickly, nervously, and had time for only that before the cold set in. “Holy s**t, that’s cold. Wow, that’s horrible.”

He was so cold he locked up and couldn’t even push himself from atop of her, he just stayed frozen, crouched like he was ready to push himself up.

His teeth chattered while he spoke. “Arnica. Mandragora.”

But, he was breathing. And nothing hurt anymore, for a few seconds at least. The chill was uncomfortable but not as unpleasant, and it did succeed in calming him down and letting him collect is wits.

“Good thinking. Sorry, again. Big thing chasing me, I think. Thought the mirror was falling apart. Place is crazy. You ever been? Really cool, though. I’m going to go back. Maybe not tonight.”

Keiko snorted and shrugged. “I mean, the attack is literally called freeze, so it lives up to its name at least. Also, no need to apologize, no I haven’t ever been but…you’re not going back now are you? You literally just ran for your life, at least give whatever was chasing you time to get lost, yeah?”

She was mulling over the idea of going to visit, she had kind of been invited. “Good. Because tonight would be stupid, and you don’t seem to stupid. Anyway. If I went I wouldn’t want to become one of you guys, just so you know. But I wouldn’t mind seeing it if you can take a friend with you. I’d take you up to my Homeworld too, nothing big and scary up there. I mean, the spiders are kind of large, but they’re cute as anything. And then you’ve got ladybugs and moths. It’s a great place. But cold. You’d need to bring a jacket. Also, if you came, expect the idea of manual labor. I’m working on rebuilding, so, I’d be putting you to work, not just sightseeing.”

Waggling a finger, Keiko grinned. “But hey. It’s not everyday you can just get invited up to space, yeah?”

Arnica stared at her for a few seconds. “Well, yeah, I was interested until you said large spiders, but–really? Yeah, I want to go into space.” Even if it was cold. Destiny City still had chilly days so he hadn’t packed up his winter clothes; the rain had been particularly frigid just last week.

And she had seriously just offered to go with him? Maybe Mirrorspace would work differently if there was a White Moon Senshi.

And he could go into space, what? That was so wild. He could handle a little manual labor in exchange for that.

It was a good distraction from what had just happened, too; he was already coming down from the adrenaline rush and seemed to be rolling over the ideas in his head.

“You’re not just teasing me, are you? I’ve heard about space things before. Is it like Earth, or-well, no. Sorry, I’m a journalist, I love asking questions. When can we go, like–seriously. Tell me what I need, and when.”

“They’re not like, giant spiders, but they’re large and fluffy and the cutest damn things I’ve ever seen.” Keiko grinned. “I’m not teasing you, no. That would be more rude than I can say, I’m good to go up when you are, maybe we can meet here this time tomorrow? I should be able to go back up tomorrow, and I really would love the company. I could meet you here at about four?”

She looked pleased, already thinking of what she could bring for him to work on or…

“Hey! If you have anything that might be helpful in fixing things, let me know. Or just bring it. I won’t say no to anything. It’s going well so far, but I always need more s**t!”

Keiko paused and then lit up. “A chair! Or some cushions. I would love something comfy.”

...Okay, well they weren’t giant spiders, that was at least a step in the right direction. He really didn’t know if he could trust the White Moon Senshi, but…

Oh, to hell with it. You only live once. He wanted to see it; you didn’t get opportunities like this every day. “I’m not sure I’m going to be helpful in fixing things,” nor did he really even know what fixing things entailed on a strange space world. “But I’m willing to try. I’m decently handy, I’ll figure it out.”

He didn’t want to make her change her mind, not when she had the self purported cutest damn things she’d ever seen.

“I can be here tomorrow at four, yeah. I guess I can bring you a chair or some cushions or something. Mirrorwalking makes it pretty easy to move things from one place to another.” He supposed he could risk going back in–even if it was just to pass from one mirror to another. “I’ll see what I can come up with before I see you again.”

Keiko grinned, nodding. “Perfect! Then I’ll see you tomorrow at four. Prepare for an adventure, new mirror friend. And, please.” Her voice grew softer. “Take it easy tonight. Too much stress can lead to a lot of issues, and you having like. A heart attack or stroke tonight won’t do either of us any good for the trip tomorrow!”

She winked and gave a wave. “See you then! Be safe!”

The senshi left before he could speak again, already planning on what they could do, and growing excited to see what new life might have been born up there.

Hopefully…it wouldn’t be another bug but. If it was, she would love them all the same.
