The picnic was long over, and Juniper had treated Anella to pizza for dinner, complete with homemade cocktails, and snuggled against her with a pleased, sigh. She was pretty well buzzed, and was feeling rather wonderful. Warm and floaty, and the fact that she got to be cuddled with Anella only ever made the sensation more fantastic.
The words of the lieutenant were once again playing in her mind and she gave a very heavy, very disgruntled sigh. “Nella. Why do you think we weren’t chosen? At that battle? So many people got corrupted, and I know I could feel it, and this whole time I thought we were just stronger than those who did get it but…”
Juniper sighed heavily and pressed closer, making herself comfortable on Anella’s chest and sighing again, though this time in contentment.
“This b***h I was fighting with made it seem like you and I just won’t…won’t…no…weren’t worthy of it. And ******** that. You and me are more than worthy of everything. ******** that!” Her eyes flickered up towards Anella’s face. “...You know what I mean? Do you think we just weren’t good enough?”

Anella was relaxing on the couch, playing with Juniper’s hair while they reclind. At first, she thought she might have misheard Juniper, but after a few seconds she suddenly became more coherent and attentive.
“Chosen?” she asked, and let the word echo in her mind. She turned so she could face Juniper, one brow raised. “Chosen, she said that? What does she think this is, a kickball game? They’d be ******** lucky to have us,” she snorted.
Chosen, what were they on?
“Sounds like they’re just sore losers. Obviously we’re good enough to do anything we put our minds to. They’re not some elite club, I’ve met them. Half of them have no idea at all what they’re doing. The other half are just rude.”

Juniper paused and snorted. “You really think so? You don’t think that they just didn’t want us?” She sighed and tugged Anella’s hand down to her lips, kissing her finger tips. “What if we weren’t good enough. I mean. They’re stupid if they think we’re not good enough. We’re the greatest. Ever.”
She sighed softly, nuzzling. “They’re assholes. But. I just don’t understand, you know?” Juniper huffed, her eyes half lidded. “You felt it didn’t you? You felt the chaos trying to come in. It was…uncomfortable. I always thought I was strong enough, I thought that was what my great…everything. But what if it didn’t…because we weren’t…I wasn’t…?”
She huffed again and rolled over, shaking her head. “It’s so stupid. She was stupid.”

Anella snorted. “She sounds stupid. Of course we’re good enough. Too good for them, if you ask me.”
She kept the smile on her face, even if she sighed heavily at the questions. “I felt it. But.” Quiet, briefly, while she chose her words, “I didn’t want it. It made me feel small. It was uncomfortable, and I didn’t like it. I didn’t think it felt like power or anything, it felt like–I don’t know. Getting sick. Getting pressured to do something you didn’t want to. I felt smothered. It was like being stuck in a little room with the walls shrinking. Why would I want that? You know? It was like they didn’t want to give me a choice, they just wanted to take it. But I’m stubborn,” she shrugged, combing he fingers through Juniper’s hair again.
“I wasn’t going to let them take anything from me. Wasn’t going to let them take me away from you, either. If I wanted to be in the Negaverse, I could just go tell someone. But, I don’t. So. Nothing lost, you know?”

“I mean…I guess. But…what if it isn’t? What if like…I don’t even know! I’m stubborn too. But.”
Juniper nuzzled into the woman’s hand. “...What if they refused us? Why are they so rude, Nellie? This is stupid. I hate them. I like to punch them, you know.” She closed her eyes and blindly reached for her drink, fingers wrapping around the stem of the glass and drawing it to her lips, draining it.
“I don’t like those aliens either. I found one. One of the Velencians. Almost killed him. Wanted to kill him. It’s their fault it all happened, you know. They should get the ******** out of here, I think. I hate them…Do you think I’m a monster? I sort of felt like one. I think I made him cry.”
He hadn’t really deserved to cry…but then again…if she had killed him…wouldn’t that have been worse?
She yawned and nestled closer, sleepy from the alcohol. “I’ll kill him next time. I’ll punch the chaos out of everyone and get the dirty aliens off the planet…”

Anella couldn’t help but laugh, or snort, or something of both. “How much did you have to drink?”
She smoothed Juniper’s hair now, trying to reassure her. “If you like to punch them, okay. They’re bad people. I’ve never met one of the aliens, I don’t know what I’d do if I did. Maybe I’d punch the Chaos out of them, too.”
Did they have Chaos? She didn’t know. Maybe didn’t care; if they were working with the Negaverse, they might as well have been doused in it. “I don’t like them here. I don’t like that things happen that I don’t understand. I mean, if someone was going to try and kill me–yeah. I’d want to stop them. Because even if they couldn't take me out, they might take out someone else.”
Maybe someone she cared about.
“The sooner they leave, the better. I don’t think you’re a monster. I do think you’re a little drunk. Very passionate, though. You didn’t tell me when that happened, why not? Don’t keep secrets from me. You can tell me anything.”

“I made our drinks strong, Nellie. Very strong. Why aren’t you even a tiny bit tipsy? It’s not really fair. I’m not that much of a lightweight…”
Juniper sighed and shrugged. “Dunno. It just. I didn’t want you to think I was completely violent. But I guess I am, And I’m sorry.”
She didn’t want to talk anymore and firmly closed her eyes, huffing softly and curling into a ball. “...I’m going to sleep now. I’ll tell you things tomorrow. I love you.”

Anella looked at her for a few seconds and laughed. Giggled, really, but it all sounded the same to her. “You’re not a monster, I know that. You did what you thought was best. I love you, it’s okay. Tell me more tomorrow.”
…If she remembered to even ask.
She had a bit to drink, and she could feel the fatigue and sleepiness pretty strongly.
“Don’t you worry so much. You go to sleep and have good dreams. I’m here now, and I’ll be here tomorrow. Don’t listen to whatever that Negaverse b***h said, they’re just sore losers. You’re my number one pick, anyway.”
