Fuzzy antennae, thorns and spikes, and even extra antennae! The whispers were everywhere and getting louder. The other day, she had even seen an Elarian elder with thin spines growing from her shoulders! It was strange, to say the least.
Luleta stood at the soaking bucket and rubbed unconsciously at her own shoulders. She was supposed to be cleaning up the dinner dishes, but there was a caterpillar crawling along the edge to remind her of the strange changes she had been hearing about lately. What if she suddenly had spikes growing from her skin one day?

Enya was beyond ecstatic to have her family visiting from Zinris! She'd begged to go to them, but Mama Pyrrha was still fervently against it. It was one of the rare times that her more lackadaisical parent became firm so Enya relented...for now. When she approached her cousin Enya's arms were filled with a stack of dirty plates and utensils. She'd expected to see the Elarian scrubbing but she was just sort of...staring...at a bug? "You know you can't talk to them, right? The moon isn't right for that." She commented with a smile as she sat her load next to the washing basin. Of course, Enya was only half teasing. "What'cha thinkin' about?"

Luleta chuckled and shook her head. Visiting her relatives always required a bit of adjusting to their strange ways. Strange, but charming in her eyes. "I'm not planning on talking to any bugs. It just made me think about those stories that have been going around lately." She reached for a plate from the stack that Enya had brought over and started scrubbing. She wasn't normally one to let daydreaming get in the way of her responsibilities, so she shouldn't let it start now! "The ones about the elders suddenly growing spikes and leaves and things like that. It sounds rather like a fantasy, but what if it is real?"

Realization struck Enya and she very nearly dropped the plates. "Oh! They're wild, aren't they? I've heard all kinds of stories growing up but the way they're talking now is like these people are real."At risk of actually dropping her stack, the teenager moved to set them on a nearby stand. Her antennae had perked a bit and her eyes were absolutely shining with mirth. "I was talking to Pyanka about this before you came. First, they were talking about a sister who had leaves in her dreads like Mama Pyrrha. Then they said they were vines and they were growing. So, then I said it had to be fake, and then a few weeks later the elders were talking about it. They were stories from two different sisters who lived on the opposite end of the island from one another so it had to be real."It wasn't so strange to think about really. If the world around them could hold a spiritual connection with their goddesses and to them, even going so far as to send messages through frogs and stones, then why wouldn't it be real?

"Careful, Enya," Luleta chuckled, wary of the wobbly plates. "I don't remember many stories like this when I was younger, but the ones I did were always so.. it all sounded made up. Lately, they've been talking about it a lot more, and in much more detail." She glanced down at the heavy braid hanging over her shoulder and wrinkled her nose. "I don't know if I'd like any actual vines growing in my hair. Vines are living things, and hair isn't. Wouldn't it hurt to cut it at all? And the spikes? ..Well, that sounds cool, but also somewhat inconvenient, right?

Enya looked for a dry cloth and upon finding one, she moved to Luleta's side so she could start drying off the dishes. "I don't think it's so strange." She mused with a pleasant sort of smile. "The great mothers speak to us in many ways and maybe this is just their way of letting us know they're here?" After all, if they could send their messages through the ground and the plants around them then how strange was it to give their daughters new traits to guard them? It was still pretty wild to hear about but still... "Your hair is living too! How else would it grow? You didn't always have that braid, did you?" Even as she spoke she gesticulated to her own hair, as if it were growing down to her knees. "The spikes miiight make it a little hard to sleep though. What's something you'd like to have?"

Lips pursing thoughtfully, Luleta raised her hand to tug at her braid. "Well, it does grow, but it doesn't feel anything or do anything. A cut to our antennae hurts, but we cut our hair all the time. Would it not hurt if it was.. alive alive?" It was a thought she'd never considered until now.. Leave it to a visit to her cousins to bring up such thinking. With a thoughtful hum of contemplation, her hands slowed slightly in their cleaning. "I guess... I mean, I've never heard of it, but.." her cheeks flushed bashfully, self-conscious but enjoying the whimsical talk. If her Mata heard her talking like this... "Wouldn't it be lovely to have wings? Travel over the trees instead of struggling through them, able to sneak up on prey much more quietly, extra protection against bad weather..."

"How do you know it doesn't feel? What if it just can't speak? And when you cut it your hair screams and screams but you just keep hacking away?" The longer she talked the more 'mournful' Enya's tone became as if she were taking drama to an entirely new level. "Wings!" Enya clapped her hands with an excited gasp. "Oh, Luleta, that would be wonderful. You could see through the eyes of birds and sleep on clouds." Still, another thought claimed her and her whimsical talked turned to a devious smirk. "Or puff them out like birds in spring to catch the eye of someone charming." Lifting up a drying cloth, the teen flapped it around behind her and crouched, bouncing a little on her toes around Luleta.

Enya's suggestion was rather horrifying. Utterly chilling! With her mouth pressed in a grim line, she looked over at her cousin and shook her head. "Surely the goddess would not be so cruel. I prefer my theory." Ah, but then the lighter topic of the wings. "I don't know about sleeping on clouds, but to get the view the birds have.." Someone charming?! She shook her head and scrubbed harder at the dish she held. "I don't think anyone but other birds would find that attractive. Or other women with wings."

"That's because you've only met boring people." Enya smirked as she straightened. Logically she would want something better suited for defense, but she would necessarily complain if she were to wake up with an array of brightly colored feathers. She would be the talk of the island, and hopefully that would be enough to attract someone really special. It was a teenager's whimsical thought, but a tempting one never the less. "I think I'd like to be able to breathe under water. It would make reef fishing so much easier." There was only so much she could do compared to the Kahikina, but Enya tried her best.

Luleta snorted sharply, but a smirk did lift her lips. She had to admit, many of those she had met had only the most basic interests. Fanciful thinking wasn't exactly encouraged back on Yael. "Yeah, breathing under water would be very useful! Mata made sure we learned how to swim, but that can only get us so far." It was nice to hear Enya think up such a practical gift to get. Maybe there was some hope for them yet! "Of course, we don't fish on Yael nearly as much as you do here. I wonder if I could get something that gives me perfect aim while hunting."

"You could have four eyes and maybe then you'll see twice as far. Like a spider." Could spiders see further because of their eyes? Enya wasn't so sure, but they looked cool which meant the world to her. "Or maybe just eyes like a hawk? That way if you're in a tall tree and see something you'll be able to shoot it." As fun as it was to think about traits Enya almost wished her cousin would loosen up a little and come up with something fun. She was just pondering things that would be useful while working! Where was the joy in that?

"Four eyes?" Luleta narrowed her eyes in contemplation. "I don't know about seeing further, but I'd certainly see a lot more. ...I could have eyes in the back of my head like our mothers seem to." She giggled lightly. One day she might have that skill. Not quite yet though. "I do like the idea of eyes like a hawk. That would be so useful for hunting. Oh, I bet it would help with crafting and stuff like that as well! I'd be able to get so much more detail in things." She looked over at her cousin and smiled. Her visit to the isle would be over before she knew it.. "Speaking of tall trees and spiders... maybe being able to spit out webs so that you can sit in any tree without worrying about falling out. And you could catch prey easily!" Oh, now she was excited. The potential was truly endless!

"Both of your mothers might have them, but only one of mine does." Turning to her cousin, Enya just grinned. "Mama Pyrrha is an eye and she can see it all if she tries." There was a certain air of the dramatic about her words and just a dash of true belief. After all, her mother seemed so connected with the world around them so why wouldn't she believe it was true? Spitting webs? Enya laughed and mimicked the act before wrapping her arms around Luleta, heedless of her poor cousin's working hands. It was just so much fun to have her family around for visits and one day, oh one day soon she was going to see them. Maybe when she came back she could have a cool gift too or even a story of one.
