Legendary
Solo or RP Format Counts as 5 RP growth Points Solo word minimum is 750, RP post minimum is 7
It all started as rumors...strange traits that appeared after certain Earthlings and Alkdikes went on a sort of...spiritual journey. Some would disappear for days before returning with horns, or feathers down their arms, or claws in place of their hands. Others apparently would fall off a cliff only to fly their way to freedom, disappearing in the clouds and never seen again. Those were the stories that were hard to believe...but these days...more were seeing these traits first hand.
Forked tongues, fuzzy antennae, spikes across their skin.
Legendary people who were blessed by the gods themselves.
No one quite knows why individuals are blessed, or when they can expect it, or even what they might get in terms of this unique trait. But it's gotten regular enough that rumors and gossip is starting to spread around. Younglings are daydreaming of traits they might some day get - though not guaranteed. And some are fearing the implications of why they might get such a thing.
Uncertainty is a dangerous think - it can lead to excitement and anticipation, but it also can lead to unfound fears. Especially when the uncertainty is around something completely and utterly out of one's control.
[ Lately more and more Tendajians are being blessed with Legendary Traits. There still is no rhyme or reason around why one is selected, outside of them being older and experienced. In this prompt, explore how your character feels about Legendary traits. Maybe they cross paths with someone with such traits, or maybe they are listening to rumors. Or maybe they are hoping for what their future traits might be (right or wrong). Have fun exploring this concept in character solo or with friends. ]

The time for Adenah to leave for what she hoped would be her final mission was upon her. True to her word, she’d decided to see the children first and tell them she loved them. She’d already spoken with Siofra that evening, choosing to spend one on one time with them, before dropping to the first floor.
Of course, he was up in the middle of the night cleaning. If he wasn’t cooking then he was cleaning the kitchen and it was always when the teen was stressed. She knocked her knuckles against the window, wincing when he jumped and whipped around, nearly dropping his pan in the process. It would have been comical if she wasn’t so scared of Theanduri running into the room with a knife.

At first he’d almost thought one of his cousins was playing a prank on him, but when Ari saw his mother his heart stilled. Almost too quickly, he sat his cleaning aside and moved to unlock the window for her. “You could just come in through the door,” he murmured. He offered a hand to help her up. “Everyone’s asleep; no one would even notice.”
Getting the woman through the smaller kitchen window was a feat of agility, but once she’d managed to squeeze her hips through he motioned to the table. The candle he had burning was the only light in the space, and beneath it was a book he’d been passively reading. “Sit down; I’ll make some tea.”

Watching him move off, Adenah smoothed out her cloak and settled in at the table. It was the first time she’d ever been in Thea’s home – at least, on the main level. She’d snuck into the kids rooms when they were sick or injured, even sometimes when they were little, but as long as they were able she’d always encouraged them to meet her on the roof. This seemed almost…heartwarming, really. Comforting.
Pulling the book closer to her, she looked over it’s pages. “Reading about legends? A man who sprouted wings and flew off…That sounds…possible.” There was no hiding the skeptical glint to her face.

“They’ve been talking about it all over the market.” Ari reached for the water he’d kept on a low, simmering boil for most of the night and poured out two generous cups. Once he had that settled he added the tea leaves, grabbed some honey to add later and moved over toward the table. “At first I thought it was just a bunch of gossip, but…well, they say they’ve seen alkidike with fuzzy antennae and soldiers with horns.”
He hadn’t been so sure of it until the butcher swore he’d seen a military man with horns on his head. At first he thought they were crystals, but the sight had been unmistakable!
”Like a Quhar, they were!”

“You know, when I was a little girl my mother used to tell me stories about people who were touched by the goddess.” As her son settled across from her, Adenah scooted forward a little bit and took her tea cup. As she looked down into the tea the glow from the candle made it look almost celestial. “Those who had done remarkable things would disappear for days, maybe weeks, before coming back changed. Their crystals would glow like opals and sometimes their skin would look like the night sky. A thousand stars embedded in the skin; almost like the moon herself had taken them into her arms before releasing their physical selves back into the world.”

A thousand stars? It wasn’t often that Arkadios was privy to stories from Jauhar so the teenager eagerly ate up anything his mother could tell him. She did so with a fair amount of mysticism and love which only served to sadden his heart. One day he hoped to visit with the family she was forced to cut herself off from, and maybe then they could tell him more stories like this.
“If you were ever taken by a God or a Goddess, is that what you would want? Glowing crystals and starry skin?”

Adenah couldn’t help snorting. Beyond the shifting of their bodies in the chairs it was the loudest sound in the room. “I’ll never have to worry about that sort of thing.” Nothing she’d ever done was ‘legendary’ and even if it were she doubted it would count as something a benevolent deity would be proud of. Her luck she’d be cursed and she wasn’t about to seek that out.
“What sort of things has your book talked about? I assume it’s all Oban.” Flipping through the pages, she perused the information. “Horns like you said, and…scales? Who would ever want that? I like having smoothing skin.”

Ari smiled. “Maybe for defense? If you had them on your forearms or your chest it could help in a fight.” It might not be the most glamorous of traits, but he could see the uses, especially in his family. Even his father and Uncle could use some scales; it might help with the burns.
“I think…I wouldn’t mind them. Then they’d have to get through me to get to any of you and I’m already pretty big.”

Adenah’s heart clenched. Her son really was such a sweet boy and he always thought about those around him first. She’d seen him worry over his cousins when they were sick, fuss over giving his sister more treats than himself and so much more. There was a time that Adenah worried his kindness would be his undoing; until Theanduri told her about his temper, that is.
Once Arkadios was mad he stayed angry and his rage could make him blind to anyone around him. Just like his mother he had a vein of spite in his blood and a quick temper. She’d just never been privy to it. “I think those scales would be good to protect you too. It’s okay to think about yourself from time to time, you know.”

“I am thinking about myself.” Ari sat back with a confused furrow in his brow. “If I just watched over myself then I’d just worry about them more.” So, naturally, he would just go with the path of least resistance. It was all hypothetical of course since he would never do anything so grand as to attain some spirits favor, but if he did…
Well, he’d want it to mean something.

Well, she could hardly argue with that. Adenah gave a low hmm and lifted her cup slowly to her lips. The tea was starting to cool under the dying candlelight. Soon enough it would burn too low to be of much use and it was well beyond time that Ari should have been in bed. Still…she was reluctant to let this moment pass.
Maybe if she’d been blessed by the moon goddess or one of Oba’s deities she wouldn’t have to leave his side? As they were she could watch the flames flicker across his cheeks and dance in his eyes. That green…the same green Siofra carried…a mark of their father. It was what helped to keep them safe, and marked them as part of Theanduri’s family.
“I love you so much, Ari.” She smiled and reached for his hand. “You know that, don’t you?”

The companionable silence that fell between them was nice. Arkadios was able to read through his book and occasionally sip on his tea with his mother close by. He knew she was watching him, she usually did, but he didn’t much mind it. The one thing that even got through to him was when she reached for his hand, and he instinctively gave it a squeeze.
“Of course I do.” Where was that coming from? It was…strangely ominous and didn’t settle well in his gut. “Are you okay?”

Adenah nodded with a soft smile. “Yeah, I’m just fine, baby.” She gave his hand one last squeeze before setting his cup down and moving to rise. “I should get going, though; I’ve already stuck around longer than I should have.”
The older hybrid moved around the table to his side and wrapped her arms around her boy. She squeezed him as close as she could, careless of just how big he’d grown. To her he would always be small and precious; an absolute treasure to protect. “Be good.” She kissed his forehead crystals.

[FIN]
He couldn’t help focusing on just how off all of this felt. As excited as he was to see his mother everything about this meeting was different than any other time she’d ever stopped by. For one thing she’d made a point to spend time with each of them separately, focusing on different aspects of them, with this far off look in her eye.
Should he bring it up to his Aunt and Uncle? His father? Maybe he should talk to Siofra first and see what she thought…
“Always,” He murmured and held on tight. When she started to pull away Ari gave a little tug to extend the hug but even that didn’t keep her. With one last look Adenah slipped out into the night.
